    I want to take random analog sounds, tweak them and discover the music they belong to. How can I sample and map to a keyboard for $300 or less?

      @undulations  3 года назад

      Well, it's a very interesting question. Do you already have a source for sounds or is that part of the budget? Analog in the sense of an analog synth or in the sense of captured/found sounds? Do you have a computer/laptop/tablet/phone that could be part of the scheme? For example, something like the KoalaPad app lets you record sounds and play them from a virtual keyboard, that's probably cheapest but maybe not what you want. The Kastle 1.5 in this video, a less expensive field recorder or audio interface to capture the sounds, maybe a lite version of Ableton Live to tweak the samples - but then a midi keyboard would probably put it over $300. An Elektron Model:Samples is already at $300, no real source for samples without additional things. A Bastl MicroGranny? Maybe (see video on here)? A Volca Sample is super powerful for the money, but it doesn't really allow you to play the samples chromatically. There is a Volca Sample 2 out (coming out?) that I would certainly wait for. There is a PhonicBloom Gecko LoopSynth but I'm not that familiar with it (I have one in the mail). Anyway, just some thoughts. Tell me some more about computer vs. no computer, etc. and I may have some better ideas about it.

      @@undulations Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely research your suggestions. I'm hesitant to get a MIDI controller and rely on a computer. However, I recently bought Koala and Caustic and started sampling.
      I've got it in mind to get a Yamaha e463 because it has a basic sampling feature, though limited as far as editing and sequencing samples. I've considered the PO 33 (Koala is the substitute), also either of the two Reface synthetic - the turn-off for the analog Reface is lack of on-board memory or registrations to save sounds and settings. I consider the Voica but it seems like you have to download samples from a computer or other device and I want something that can record. I've seen one sampler similar to the Refaces (the brand escapes me at the moment). I'd get it if it was within $100 of my budget.
      I want to avoid audio interfaces, extra speakers, cables, etc. that's par for the MIDI controller, DAW route. I've got a case of G.A.S. and I'm trying to explore music and beat making without drowning in equipment and debt.
      But, I do appreciate your feedback.

      @@tzodearf2596 That totally makes sense. I like the PO-33 a lot but the interface can't really grow at all. I like the MicroGranny but I feel like it will always need some sort of external FX support, and is both mono and monophonic. Used SP404-sx? That's sort of a self-contained universe, can record, tons of YT and IG about it. Anyway, best of luck!

    Oh my goodness, I skipped ahead to like 22 mins as I have the old kastle without usb and kaboom, mind blown. You sir are next level. When I get v.2 kastle
    I shalt revisit this madness of a helper!
    ps: Your calm vibe is a reminder to stay chill myself, so cheers to that as side note. Undulate away...

      OCEANSINSPACE Thanks for all of this🙏🏼! It might be adaptable to the first Kastle, but I’m not sure🤔 Take care!

    This type of reverse engineering takes a stroke of genius!
    Well done!
    I used copper wire the same gauge as the patch cables to hard wire into the kastle and then into a breakout box that the kastle sits into the copper wire is attached to bolts on the box and i made patch cables with little crocodile clips.
    The copper wire is flat onto the body of the kastle so its not in the way. It is fixed hardwiring and my croc clips is where the funn is at! 😁

      scowls Mcjowls Thank you🙏🏼! And wow! That sounds really nice! I’ve wondered about doing that with a nearby breadboard, but scaling it up (and making it permanent) makes a ton of sense!

      Thank you! - I did 9 other patches earlier tonight (I've started generating the patchcodes on the computer, speeds it up a ton). I shot video of one (it had a weird instability), another one was decent, 2 of them were totally silent, and the other 5 were just sort of okay. I'm going to keep at it, will hopefully post something on Instagram in the next couple of days! - Thanks again for checking it out!

    100 quadrillion quadrillion patches! I tell people my modular synth (12u 104hp) has a "million sounds" but often thought maybe its only got 500,000?Just guessing a big number. I never did the maths. Ace video.

    • @undulations
      @undulations  4 года назад

      Thanks much :) Don't forget that I'm really, really bringing the number down by using discrete knob settings. The knob settings might actually be discrete, maybe something like 256 different values, since the thing is digital at it's core, but it certainly gives the illusion of being continuous. Thanks again for watching!

    At the start you’re recording with a Tascam Dr-05. Do you recommend this? I currently recording to mini disc. I’ve been looking at the DR-07 and DR-40x - I just want to go from device or mixer to line in of the tascam. Some people say recording are quiet. What are your experiences? Thanks

    • @undulations
      @undulations  2 года назад

      Well, I'd say at least 90% of this channel's line-in recordings were done with the DR-05. I have to say that it's been very solid for 3+ years and pretty amazing for the price. It only has 3.5mm TRS line in, no phantom power for bigger mics (but plug-in power for smaller one), and not a lot of bells and whistles. The built-in XY mics have always seemed very nice (but I use a Zoom H4N for most voice and field recording). As for quiet? I find that I tend to run the recording level low for many synths (and sometimes attenuate signals), but I feel like that's typically the synth's specs. Overall, have been very happy with it (used it last night for a dual external mic setup, plug-in power, because the H4N's memory card was downstairs😂).

      @@undulations Thanks very much. I was leaning towards the dr-40x as it has a switch that toggles the input to line level, but perhaps I need not worry about that..!
