  • A scene from episode 218 - "Profit and Loss". Elim Garak and Quark discuss fashion with a lot of subtext to the conversation. This is one of the many fun scenes that DS9 had with Garak, and why the show had lasting appeal.

I'm amused that everything that comes out of Garak's mouth is either a subtle implication, a half-truth or a well-disguised insult, never anything in between.

The other element to this scene is that Quark is actually trying to bribe Garak in exchange for his silence regarding those Cardassian radicals. It's one thing I hadn't realized until I rewatched this scene years later; I thought Quark was honestly looking for a dress to curry favor with the female Cardassian - and that was true but he had ulterior motives. The layers of background that was written into DS9 was immaculate.

This is why DS9 was and is so good: Everything was so layered and complex. People give a lot of modern shows credit for that, but DS9 was doing that long ago, especially when it came to characters like Garak (and Andrew Robinson's delivery) who could speak in riddles and metaphors, but tell you exactly what you needed to hear. But it wasn't all complicated either, the Root Beer discussion with the same characters is just as brilliant. If nothing else, DS9 characters embodied different philosophies and we the audience got to witness many "what if" scenarios play out in a grim fashion.

One of the biggest reasons why Garak is the best Star Trek character of all time was how he brought out the best in every other character with whom he interacted. Bashir, Odo, Kira, Worf, O’Brien, Sisko, Quark, he challenged them all in ways that no other character did, which gave us new insight into all their personalities, and led to some of their best episodes.

  • @ElNick09

Garak so often gives the people around him a clearer, better understanding of dangerous situations than their closest friends. Its not advice exactly, more like an unvarnished laying out of their options with the potential consequences. He does it without expectation of thanks too. Which is good, since almost no one ever thanks him.

The more I think about it, though..... Quark only *ACTED* like a typical Ferengi. He put on a public facade of being a slimy, greedy greaseball.
In reality, Quark *FREQUENTLY* did the right thing.... Sometimes for a price, but sometimes not..... He may not have been actively brave in the sense of O'Brien or Worf or Jadzia, but he frequently behaved morally, compassionately and benevolently.
No, really!!! He actually did. I know he *TALKS* a good game about being Greedy and Duplicitous and Conniving(and in his defense he is), but frankly, he saved the Station at least a few times, he was wracked with guilt about selling weapons that could kill millions, he *LITERALLY* saved the entire Alpha Quadrant by springing Nog from prison, and he often just discarded or gave away things he thought would be useful or helpful to others.
He was also a good friend to Odo when Odo needed it.... Despite them being on completely opposite ends of Law and Criminality, respectively.
I swear, I have five favorite characters from DS9.

Quark isn't really that well understood - I think Nog had some idea of what he was really like - and some of his lady friends & Jadzia - but most of the rest of the station was quite clueless - perhaps eventually Odo got the gist - but it took him more than a decade of knowing him to get it.
Sisko or Worf were pretty clueless - if they did anything for him it was more out of pity than friendship.
It would be interesting to know how much of Quark's true Character Garek was aware of - it could have been all of it - or he could have simply not tale a lot of interest - but I think Garak at least is more than bright enough to see there is more to him.
I like that They made Bashir what he was - as it actually helped the reasons for Garek to take an interest in him to come across as more intellectual curiosity and not that he just thought Bashir was a hot twink.

Elim Garek was an important reason why DS9 was so enjoyable. One never knew what he'd do or say next, but whatever it was one could count on it being witty, full of double meaning, and very entertaining. His last appearance in the show's final episode went a long way to understanding his personal motivations: it's possible to love one's culture and people while loathing it's leadership and governance. Sadly, it's a situation with which I've often found myself facing.

    • @smc1942
      @smc1942 Год назад

That is the World I find myself in today. Despising a Criminal Cartel in a certain Capitol, while loving my Country and it's imperfect History.
It's worst critics ignore the fact other countries also have tainted histories. Many much WORSE than this one!
Although I cannot find it easy to hate them for their ignorance; being brainwashed by a CULT is not really the fault of the Victim. Especially when it begins in their early years, when they're barely able to function on their own. This grooming is a true Crime against Humanity. So in spite of their often hate-filled rhetoric, I love my people. They do make that difficult at times! Especially when they resort to Criminal behaviors themselves. Leave that to the Politicians!
That said, I am not a politician, celebrity, or Billionaire Oligarch, so there is nothing I can do to change it. I am in exile, yet I remain in country. It's an odd situation, to be certain. Even if I had the resources to leave this country, there are none I really care to go to; as they are much WORSE than this one! I have looked, and given it serious consideration!
Dwelling on such thoughts have given me many years of sleepless nights, so I usually avoid them. Your comment struck a nerve, and brought them out of the vault. Not to worry! You'd be surprised what triggers them. It's why I don't watch the "news". It's nothing more than propaganda from the Cartel itself! Why watch that?! A better investment of one's time is reading a good book! But I digress.
This is exactly why I find Garak so relatable. I'm stuck in a place I really don't want to be, but there is NO better place to go to! So I'm stuck in a menial job, with no choice but to take life day by day. Hope is a thing of the past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday so quickly one wonders what happened to today. This life often feels more like a prison sentence than an opportunity for fun and growth. Oh well, there aren't many years remaining. Honestly, many days I feel, and have said aloud....
_"Death cannot be this busy!"_ 🙄
      Cheers!🥃

I really enjoyed how the show fused the classic Star trek style and feel with the fixed location for the main set of Babylon 5.
Sure, a ship allows you to travel to places that a station cannot but DS9 also berthed a number of capable federation sloops and even a cutting edge, interdictor with cloaking tech. DS9 had it all, I just wish the writers had had two seasons to tie everything off and come to a clean conclusion.
They thought they were getting another season as the last season began and found out the show wasn't being renewed; they had to try and wrap it all up with that crazy final season, it's why it felt so wierd compared to the rest.

@@RequiemPoete It was NOT a bribe it was Quark doing a little fishing to see where Garak's feelings and intentions were toward the dissidents onboard. If Garak took the latinum and said nothing it would have been clear that his opinions mirrored those of the Obsidian order and Garak could have been a real threat to them and a possible assassin. By giving all that advice to Quark Garak is saying he does not agree with the Order and that Quarks friends are in danger and Quark should warn them.

DS9 and B5 had so many parallels. Not only in the premise of a station on the verge of (and eventually embroiled in) interstellar war, but in the fact they took great pride in developing characters, stories and carefully building blocks seasons ahead of when they might be needed.

Can't have Star Trek without Starship - sorry. Sure thing, aside for being trashed by B5 fans, showing Federation had other infrastructure was vital. But DS9 wouldn't survive in today's TV beyond 1st, 2nd season at most - Roddenberry knew what he was doing when he designed show to have short story arcs. Look at Firefly, SG:U... 1st two seasons were necessity for worldbuilding for demanding viewer. Most viewers, however are NOT that demanding. And just like TNG, show started to find its legs on 3rd-4th season. I like the way all series are complementary toward each other, with their respective merits.

I think what most Star Trek fans dislked about DS9 was the fact that it was (or became) a deconstruction of classic Star Trek (will the idealism survive War). Not everybody likes deconstruction and not everybody agrees with the conclusions the series writers came from.
I for example as a federation citizen would have been pissed of at Sisko for throwing away everything we stand for in the episode "In the Pale Moonlight" just to save our lives, if he wants to act like a caveman he is free to do, but he shouldn't use the lives of others as an excuse, it's just pathetic.
      p.s.
I wasn't trying to use cavemen in a historic way, I have no way to prove if they actually were as uncivilised as Sisko in that episode and wouldn't assume to guess. It was just a metaphor.
      p.p.s
I have no problem with DS9 it may be my favourite TV series of all time, I just like trashing Sisko "in a loving way" for that episode.

Garak was the consistent highlight of this show. He had that subtlety with his words, to imply things without saying too much. He also cared in his own way, choosing to do things like how he's doing them here. He's warning Quark of things to come and reminding him that he's not exactly the type to throw hands when it comes time. It's a beautiful bit of character work that Andrew Robinson does an amazing job with.
