- Forecast calling for 2” of snow with temps in the lower 20s. I decided to drag out some old gear that I hadn’t used in a while. My Geartop tent was gathering a lot of dust and I had almost decided to part ways with it. My HotTent woodstove was also buried under a pile of closet stuff. I decided to pull them out and go for a walk. Ended up being a real nice evening. This tent is very heavy and I’ve always had trouble dealing with condensation inside. But with the dry heat of the DanchelOutdoor stove inside I was able to sit inside quite comfortably and even dry out my clothes/shoes and wake up to a mostly dry inside. Even with one door flap all the way open I could feel a definite deference between inside temps and outside temp. All this considered I’ve decided there is a time and place for this tent and I’ll most likely hold on to it for a little while longer.

Now that’s the way to go. As much as I like cold weather backpacking I need to give hot tenting a try out here in the Grassland. I’ve never tried it.
@@tangenttrails it’s a lot of extra work! And an added danger also. Hot stove and nylon tent fabric doesn’t mix well. It’s always nice to sit around a small fire and stay warm, so why not bring it inside. If the tent is sealed up pretty good you can get it warm enough to dry out your clothes and sit comfortably with most of your warm layers removed. They don’t stay burning for an extended amount of time so youll be feeding it w wood every 10 mins or so. And my advise is to not count on it to keep things warm all night. Just let it burn out and restart it in the morning ! Thanks for watching!!
@ Definitely extra work. I probably wouldn’t pack it in over 5 miles tops and use it for cooking, sitting around like you did. For me it would be better than sitting around a fire ring on my solo winter hikes.
Man that meal looked great. Did you have to get up in the middle of the night and Stoke the fire?
Meal was nice. You know me , I don’t usually bother with cooking except to boil water, but I knew I was gonna have a lot of sit time. As for the fire.. the stove is too big to have it set up and still have enough room to set up the inner tent body. So when I got tired ,I let the fire burn down, pulled chimney and put the stove outside for the night while I slept .
Proper hot tent use. Folks that feed it all night need better sleep systems. lol
@@BrianWest58 I would never trust it to keep me warm all night, unless you planned for someone to stay up and watch it all night. Too many things can go wrong. Thanks for checking out the video!
