Weminuche Wilderness / Highland Mary Area / September 9-10

This is another beautiful hike in the Weminuche Wilderness. The Highland Mary Lakes area is well worth the effort to explore. I hiked a route that took me around the Highland Mary Lake , but to the lake. I spent a nice quiet night at Lost Lake and ended my walk early to avoid bad weather forecasted. This was a difficult hike for me, mostly because of the high elevation. Most of this trip was at...

3 day backpacking adventure in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. Starting at the Eastfork trailhead, the beautiful scenery was everywhere. Day two , consisted of two high mountain passes before my first attempt to summit wetterhorn peak. I failed my first attempt and after a good nights rest, I finally made it to the top. This would make for a long day in the end. Although the rest of the third day w...

Pack Goats / A Day Of Hiking In The Woods

Today Joanna and I went into a wooded area near our home to scout out a place that we could hike out to (with our goats) and camp. Our goats still have a thing or two to learn, and we also need to figure out a few things before we venture very far from home. The more we expose them to new environments, the more they settle down and trust us. Soon we’ll be able to take them on trail for multiple...

I'm planning on canoeing the entire Wabash next spring. I got a job to work through the winter because I'm not sure how much the rescue helicopter is going to cost me.
Check out some of this guys videos ruclips.net/video/CGZfKYXQ4Rk/видео.htmlsi=e1ly9riB_WMH8UrR Jason Struble The day we ran this section of river the water level and flow was as high or higher than when he was kayaking in these vids. I’m sure there is little to no danger most of the year, but if the water is high … you might need a helicopter rescue😂
That's our Steamboat!
nice video
Thank you !
Wow! You were blessed with beautiful weather.
Yes this trip was dry the whole time. And cooler temps. I don’t think I saw any rain until I was driving home … through St. Louis
This is awesome!! Those views are amazing 👍🏻👍🏻
Maybe once your foot heals up fully, you can plan a trip out to Colorado. I think you’d like it . If I remember correctly, you had an epic trip in Idaho a few years ago? It had some nice views too If I remember correctly. Thanks for watching!
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 I try and do Colorado trip every two years. I guess next year I’ll be in Colorado somewhere 😁
How many 14ers have you done Micheal? Thanks for sharing 😊
I’ve been atop 5 of them … but two don’t really count. Pikes peak and mount Blue Sky I drove to the top of .😂 But the other three.. Uncompahgre, wetterhorn, and Handies I did the hard way .
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 I've got zero 🙋♂️
The dog thing happens to me all the time too. I enjoy dogs, but not their muddy paws jumping on me. And I'm reluctant to push someone's dog away because the emotionally needy people that are treating animals better than they treat people might not like it. I don't want to escalate the situation with these emotionally pitiful pet owners. Dogs are animals not family members. FML
I like dogs too . But this one’s intent was very clear the moment it laid its eyes on me. It was charging in a straight line towards me and growling the whole way. I knew it was going to lead to a bite. I was stepping backwards and offering my hand, but it leaped for my face. If the situation had continued for even a few second more I’m afraid the situation would have turned into a very bad situation, but the owner managed to step between me and the dog. The dog then retreated back to the area it had come from.
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 that's awful 😖 I'VE heard stories of people being attacked by dogs on the CDT in NM because packs of abandoned pets wander off the rez.
@ericcomp7032 oh hey, by the way … I hope you get your sponsorship soon from NAPS! I used one on that trip and thought of you 🤣. I feel like you should get some royalty money or something when someone uses one after your suggestion.
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 naps for everyone 🤣
Ive thiugh about fidhing the wabash many times. Imin Indy. I imagine there's some huge carp & catfish. Anyone know if theres Bass?
My dad said growing up in terre haute the Wabash was scary. Big whirlpools
@@markdinkel-uh2je yes,its a wide and deep river by the time it gets to terre haute. But, people still recreate on it. I used to live in terre haute. I’ve seen people waterskiing, and other people kayaking in the wabash river there.
I never see any boats or canoes or anything when I've driven over I-74
@@markdinkel-uh2je when i worked in terre haute I knew some guys that would put their boats on the wabash just about every weekend.
Wow! I love that you are bringing your daughter on such a wonderful expedition. She will remember trips like this, with her dad, forever. My dad would take my brother and me on trips like this in the wilderness. I'm heading out tomorrow to do this same route, so just looking at videos and found yours! Cheers.
@@saracalvin9173 hope you have a good time !! It’s has incredible scenery once you reach the first lake. Was quite a struggle for us to hike up to emerald Lake, but It levels out for quite a while once you reach the lake. Stay safe !! Thanks checking out our trip!
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing. My buddies and I are doing this exact same route, except we're doing it counterclockwise, in 3.5 days. Is there a reason you decided to go clockwise instead of the opposite?
I don’t remember. It was probably the only route we could get our early permit for. I’d have to look to see the elevation profile, but I’m guessing it isn’t much different one way or the other. Hope you have clear weather! It’s a beautiful hike. It’s a hike I would enjoy doing again. Have fun! Stay safe! By the way …. They will require you use a wag bag if you need to “go” while you’re on the high tundra area.
There are not two loops. There is one loop. The northern portion of the loop is called the North Loop. The southern portion of the loop is called the South Loop. It's one loop. You can walk the entire loop either clockwise or counter clockwise.
@@goldenarm2118 have you ever given what you thought was perfectly good directions to someone, and they ended up totally lost trying to follow your directions ? 🤣
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 lol all the time, brother. Thanks for your video. I'm researching this trail to take my family to this Fall.
When I visited Yellowstone to work one summer in 1981, Steamboat Geyser was a dry hole in the ground that hadn't erupted for years. I knew I missed something great, and here it is! Thanks
@@geri8666 the year I captured this video , it was erupting about every 5 to 7 days . I still consider myself very fortunate to have walked up to it, waited for just a few minutes, and then witnessed the full eruption from the very beginning.
Sometime geyser can be dormant or active or extinct just like volcano
Wow! What a view! Makes the climb worth it, lol!
I think next time I’m in the area , that I might go ahead and climb all the way up . With a little more effort this one connects to a second 14er . Two for one(sort of) .
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 we couldn't do even one, so we'll enjoy it vicariously!
How awesome! So cool to see them.
It looks like ( them being white) that they’d stand out and be easy to see . But they really are not . When I was up near the top of Mount blue Sky , a few walked near me and I didn’t even notice them , except I saw someone else looking their direction , and I glanced to see what they were looking at .thanks for checking out the video !
4 years later it blows amazing to see it up close
@@Joseph_Headen it’s amazing no one was hurt. All that rock ended up all Over the boardwalk. Could’ve been a real bad day for someone.
Man I spent years there hoping to see it erupt and nothing. Signs were like any day now any day. Atleast someone recorded it.
@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 definitely could been did they say if anyone was
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077I know!!!! Thank GOODNESS no one was hurt or killed. I've never seen anything like that. THANK YOU for posting this, even though it was 4 years ago, it is awesome to see what it looked like before 2024 ripped its guts out lol.
I’m anxious to head back out there to check it out . I don’t know why , but the biscuit basin has always been this small but interesting area for me. Cant wait to see the change . For another great example of the wonders of Yellowstone … check out the video I made of steamboat geyser . How many have you done now?
Well I didn’t finish this one. But I’ve summited Uncompahgre and wetterhorn. I’m not sure if it really counts, but I’ve driven up Pikes Peak and Mount Blue Sky.
Wooow...I am from Indonesia and can only dream of going on an adventure to enjoy the natural beauty there. sorry if my english is not good
Driving around this area in a car is almost this beautiful too. If you’re ever in this area, a lot of beautiful scenery can be seen from the comfort of your car. Thanks for watching
I like views mountains beautiful
The San Juan mountains of Colorado are some of the best views. Thanks for watching!
Hey Michael, Mike from Wetterhorn here (orange sweatshirt)! It was great meeting you and spending some time climbing with you. Keep up the good work sharing your adventures. We climbed El Diente on the Thursday after this climb but had to bail on the traverse and Mount Wilson. We may go back later this summer to finish that one.
@@MikeChase-u4j thanks for checking the video out. I really did appreciate your knowledge of the route. I probably would’ve found my way by following other people and cairns, but it was a lot less worry with someone who’d been there before . I’ll most likely be back in the area this fall, not sure what my itinerary will be. Thanks again ! Nice to meet you and your boys! See ya next time MAYBE!

Wow what a beautiful hike. That climb though yikes! I was holding my breathe lol. Glad you found someone to climb it with! Enjoyed the video!
@@tonyabrowninghikes Hi Tonya ! It truly was beautiful! I had to leave a lot of video clips out of the final project or it would have been several hours long😂. The climb up was a little sketchy, but the climb down was quite a bit more nerve racking😬. Thanks for watching! See ya sometime ??

Nice! I just walked in from doing another section on the AT. I did some family genealogy in Virginia and hiked “The Channels” and the AT from Abingdon to Mt Roger the highest point in Virginia at 5700 ft. Caught a hitch back to get my truck. It was a nice time in Virginia. As you know the AT runs along then VCT Virginia Creeper Trail in that area. Hope we see one another this fall.
4 years and no comments. Just thought I’d leave one. Thanks for the great video.
I guess most people just don’t appreciate a canoe trip during a snow storm? Thanks for watching ! Thanks for the comment too !

Thanks Tonya ! There was a lot of moments of fun that didn’t appear on the video . 😂😂
@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 I can only imagine with that group lol
So glad you were able to make it down Michael. Was great to share camp with you as always!
Glad to be there.. only wish I had went on down the night before. I’ve seen a lot of the gorge, but there’s plenty of stuff for me to see. Let me know when you plan to head out again.
That looked like good times to me. Thanks for sharing 😊
Great times !! Thanks for watching
All that beautiful view.. then... carlson.. looks like a nice hike. Ill let you all do the climbing so i can watch.
With a little bit of trail clearing and a winch cable we could roll that ambohouse right up there!
Beautiful nature
I’ll have to check that out. Thanks for sharing!
You won’t regret the hike to this one.
One of my favorite places in the Gorge!
I don’t know why I took me this long to go check this one out? It was definitely worth the hike to see.
Nice! Love to see that in person some day.
I’ll bet there is a good angle for a better shot of the arch. All your good camera equipment, you might be able to get some great pics. Thanks for watching !!
I got to make it up there one of these days
Yes! There’s definitely some great views and attractions in this area of Kentucky. Thanks for watching!
I so need to see it myself. Nice little video.
It looks like the arch can be reached by the tunnel ridge road, and would only be about a mile walk(and a mile back) . If you’re in the area , it’s definitely worth the time to check this arch down.
Really worth the hike! Hidden gem 💎 thanks for sharing Michael 😊
Hey thanks for watching! The area is full of gems like this one. Worth the trip !
That rock wall leading to the arch is almost as impressive as the arch itself.
At any other place the rock wall would be an attraction all by itself. It just happens to have a giant rock arch near it that steals all the show.
Beautiful nature
Packed some good footage of the arch in such a short video! I was there back about three years ago. Have a great day my friend.
Thanks Jim! I’ve seen a lot of the arches in the area , I just had never taken the time to visit this one. It was worth the effort for sure. Thanks for watching !
Hey brother!! Wife and I would love to kayak the Wabash down to the Gulf. Great seeing you!!
A married couple from Fort Recovery kayaked to the gulf several years ago. I have no idea how long it took them or how much it cost them, but it does sound like an awesome adventure. Of course I always forget to consider the days of paddling into the wind, or waiting out lightning storms under a tarp on the bank of the river🤣. Nice to hear from you ! Thanks for commenting!!
Dad used to take the Freshman Bio Class from Wabash, Ohio to Linn Grove. I went several times and once there was a Thunderstorm. A bolt landed about 20 feet from us. That was scary. Hope life is good. Keep that oar in the water
it's a little surprising that these things don't ignite forest fires
What are the put in and take out spots? If ya dont mind sharing? Trying to compile lists of spots to hit. Thanks!
This trip we put in at a bridge south of Redkey on Highway 1. Our take out spot was south of the town of Albany on strong road. There is a short dam hazard on this section near the town of Fairview.
