A good rule-of thumb; whomever is on the mower needs to walk the property with a Trash Bag, pick up all trash, and remove all loose obstacles --- it's not the guy using the Trimmers responsibility. A good Crew-Leader, on the mower, should be trained accordingly...

I think a scythe is more appropriate sometimes. You're covering 48 inches or more in a swath - way more than 18 inches on your 36" zero, and you can work closer, slower and safer to see cinderblock, cans and jugs that may be hidden in the tall grass while completing the job possibly faster. You would have been able to collect the cuttings, too. That healthy yard doesn't look like it needs more mulch.

Not withstanding this first mow, and if you’ll be mowing it regularly, this is an easy account. Flat, no trees, no shrubs, etc. By the same token, the way it initially looked, I won’t put too much hope in that customer and charge on this initial job with “hope” out of the equation.
Y’all did a great job, hope customer appreciates it.

My father was an arborist and a landscaper, we had a landscaping company that I grew up in. My mom did the office stuff, ran the books/payroll and placed the client list and work for my dad for the week. We regularly, (in the Winter when my dad was "off") go to the Morton Arboretum here in Chicagoland to do research. He never stopped learning, and I went to work with him from when I was a small child. My job was flower planting, I'd plant edges of begonias, petunias, and the like. My mom taught me how to plant flower pots with good combinations of flowers; design and balance. At any rate, when I saw this, I was like OMG. There needs to be new turf setup. You can save this, but it's a lot of work, better to cut it down and take it out, put new turf down, or place several shrubs, and low ornamental trees. Put in raised beds for veggies/herbs. Maybe some fruit bushes along the fence, and a perennial garden on one or two sides. I'd cut down on the lawn area unless this is a fixer upper for young families that might want grass as a play area and have a swing set/sandbox setup for the children to play in.
We lived near a big easement field near a railroad, so my dad always had my uncles and family friends out to play horseshoes. He also laid out another area for volleyball. Then, on our driveway, we had a shuffleboard he spray-painted on the cement. We also had a croquet set for another area in the backyard grass area. Downstairs had a ping pong table. If you could not find something fun to do at our house during a birthday party, etc. it was your own darn fault. But that is what having a good big backyard can do for you. Thanks for keeping it up!

yard like that, you're almost certain to run over something. that's when i whip out the string trimmer and rough cut the whole thing. that way the customer also can see the rest of the junk they have to move out of the way for the next mow, because i'm not 😂

I hope you charged appropriately, risk vs reward. your risks are high, could seriously damage your equipment and yourselves too. I mean dayum, that's some crap right there hey! did one heck of a job, all things considered.

first thing I do when presented with a new property to mow is inspect for condition which allows me to determine how much I will charge for the job. and set customer expectations.. then before I start I walk the lawn looking for any hidden items that might damage my cutting capability (single most important consideration) then clear any obstacles . the broken blocks at the rotting gate a warning that there may be other obstacles in the long grass. Oh yes with a property in this condition insist on payment in advance.. and stay away from amateur house flippers who might be tempted to screw you out of payment.
.take pictures before and after.. purpose being 1) prove you completed the job... 2) real reason proof that you have not damaged anything during the cutting example in this vid the satellite dish..
thanks for taking the time to make and post this :-)

Johnny thanks for the video. Been so long since I've seen one it seems like it lol. I hear what your saying but that yard was heinous and it was a massive clean up job that put your equipment at risk. I would of said hey this is our clean up fee $$$ but if I get the contract then the services are $$ but hey it's your business you do you. I'm glad nothing was wrong with the mower when Q hit something I was like oh hell no lol.
