The great part is that he wasn't even supposed to be a main cast member. Originally he was part of JD's imagination (which is why you don't see him interacting with anyone else in the first few episodes). But the writers loved him so much they made him a core member of the cast and just let him riff off of the others
Whats interesting about Neil Flynn the actor who portrays him, is he has never spoken a scripted line ever in the entire run of the show. I'm dead serious if you look at the official scripts if there's a scene with the janitor in it all of the script says is Neil says something. Which in turn means everybody else in the main cast had to do a degree of improvisation since nobody knew what he was saying or what he was going to do
Keep up the reactions, Dr. Crystal, it's really entertaining! You can remember Episode 1, when the janitor checks that something stuck on the hospital door, JD guesses that it's a penny and he was right, so the Janitor assumed that JD did that, because his answer was roo specific. Anyway, expect more hilarious scenes between the two!
Scrubs is SOO good, so many great characters and fantastic writing. So many episodes bounce effortlessly between funny and sad and back again. As the episodes progress, you see more and more of the depth of the characters, especially Dr. Cox, who starts off not particularly easy to read, his character arc is really, really good.
Dr. Cox is hands down the most fascinating character I have ever seen on tv. You want to hate him, but you can't. It's a combination of clever writing and Mr. McGinley's insane acting skills.
Why the Janitor dislikes JD was answered in the first episode of season 1. The janitor tried to fix a broken door and JD made the remark "maybe someone put a penny in there" to make a conversation. The Janitor took it the wrong way and replied "if i find a penny in there...you better be watching out" And at the end of the episode, he did find a penny in there and waved it towards JD with the line "im watching you"

@@macmcleod1188 I get where you're coming from, because its for education purposes and its a reaction video where there's interruptions for reactions throughout the Scrubs content there's less likelihood of demonetization.
In the first episode JD and the Janitor have an interaction where the Janitor finds a Penny that jammed the automatic door and blames JD for it. ALSO the Janitor was supposed to be a 1 off character that existed only in JDs mind but Neal Flynn was so funny and popular they kept him on as a regular and scrapped the figment of JDs imagination plan. If you pay attention, in season 1, the only person who actually talks to or interacts with the Janitor is JD.
Love this series! I especially can't wait until you react to the Brendan Frasier and Michael J Fox episodes. This show seriously utilizes guest stars amazingly.
JD sabotaged the side door to the Hospital by putting a penny into the door track. The Janitor had to spend several hours trying to fix it and JD came by and taunted him.
This was a good amount of the show to include. I know the risk is copyright strikes though but it's nice to catch and there's so much good stuff in Scrubs. Kelso definitely has his flaws (all of the characters do) but there are episodes in later seasons that delve a bit deeper into Kelso, what he's like behind the facade and why does what he does. Similarly, JD is a really kind guy but he also has some major personality flaws which will come back to bite him in the butt again and again.
Honestly, I like both ... you're commentary and the show. I'd say do what you think is best. It's entertaining and educational for us non-medical types. Keep up the good work!
Janitor hates JD because he thinks JD jammed the door with a penny in the first episode. He was also supposed to be a figment of JD's imagination, but became so popular they turned him into a real character.
In the first episode a door was jammed and the janitor was fixing it, and JD guessed that it might have been a penny jammed in the door. The janitor said that if it turned out it was a penny, he'd be blaming JD and they would be enemies. It was a penny.
It's probably been mentioned before, but initially the Janitor was intended to be a figment of JD's imagination, which is why during the first season JD is the only one who interacts with him. However because of how funny Neil Flynn is, they kept him around and made him a real person. ...As real as an insane janitor can be.
When I was recently in the hospital, the nurses would use my room for breaks. My roommate was catatonic and they didn't give a toot about me being there. There would literally be 3 or 4 nurses sitting in the corner of my room complaining about things and smoking out the window. This is how I know they make 9 dollars an hour, as they were in my room complaining about it to each other A LOT.
Turk waiting for the Todd to leave because he was embarrassed to say he closed is an example of the little doctor easter eggs I came for. I’ve seen the series countless times but never understood that. Even tho it’s goofy scrubs was advised by a real doctor named Jonathan Doris aka JD, a college friend of the writer and creator Bill Lawrence
The reason the janitor dislikes JD is actually explained right at the beginning during their first meeting. JD made an innocent comment that, through sheer cosmic coincidence, convinced the janitor that he played a prank on him.
The reason the Janitor hates JD is (sorta) setup in episode 1, which I know was a while ago for Dr. Crystal. But the short story is: The automatic front door was jammed by a penny and JD made a comment correctly guessing this problem. The Janitor therefor think's that J.D. knew about it because he was the perpetrator. At least that is explanation we have been given up to this point.
Hell yeah! Always loving Scrub content. Will suscribe for futher episodes. Watched the series when it first aired with my best buddy and will never not sit down and rewatch if I stumble on it somewhere. Timeless TV classic!
There is an episode where a new character is introduced, and in that intro she appears and turn the xray around and tells that its always bothered her that it is in the wrong way :D
The janitor hates JD because something happened in the first episode. First the janitor tried to fix a door. JD was joking that maybe something put a penny in the door (i don't know how to say it in english) and the janitor accused him of manipulating it, threatening if he would find a penny that he would make JD's life miserable. At the end of that episode JD passed the janitor who looked pretty grim and held a penny.
So glad you're doing this! I've probably watched the series a dozen times, but it's really fun getting to watch along with you, both becauseof your insight and because it kind of brings back the feeling of getting to watch for the first time myself. Can't wait to watch more!
Honestly I have watched Season 1-8 all the way through 3 times, maybe 3 or 4 episodes I don't care for, which is mind boggling. So, just an FYI, assuming you don't miss any Mondays you have 3.5 years of episodes based on 1 per week. (you can trim out Season 9 though)
Apparently the Janitor was going to be a figment of JD's imagination. If you pay attention during the first season, JD is the only person to interact with the Janitor.
Janitor hates JD because of their interaction in the first episode. JD's waiting for someone while Janitor's trying to fix a door that's stuck open. JD suggest maybe there's a penny in there. Janitor questions why a penny, and asks if JD put a penny in there. "If I find a penny in there, I'm taking you down." At the end of the episode, JD walks by Janitor, who's holding a penny.
The Janitor hates JD because he knows JD lied about putting a penny in the door. JD accidently drops a penny in the door in episode 1, explains that maybe someone put a penny in the door, then the Janitor asks if he did it, and JD says no. That's when the "hate" begins, the Janitor doesn't really hate him, he doesn't choose his victims, his victims choose him.
I don't know if it's just me, but sweetheart has always been a very endearing term in my family. My grandfather was from Oklahoma. Very old fashioned and gentlemanly. He called everyone he had a deep fondness for "sweetheart". He also used it with strangers, to some extent, but only when he was being very polite. He is basically saying "you have a sweet heart" or "kind heart". Now I am worried that my grandfather was offending a bunch of people and didn't realize it. I really really hope not!
Really enjoying the series! Hope you keep it up! Scrubs is a great show and most doctors/nurses seem to agree that despite some innaccuracies for drama purposes, they really capture the spirit of working at a hospital well. Long as you stay motivated.
I watched various doctors' reactions to the pilot episode, and yours was one of the two that I had the most fun watching! Thanks for your insightful commentary :D

Oh, this show is awesome. People call it a comedy, which it is, but it explores a lot of situatons and emotions. It deals with grief, self-doubt, relationships, death, pettiness, honor, friendships, and so much more. You're in for an awesome ride! EDIT: My wife and I have watched it through at least a dozen times. There are a few standout episodes that are really meaningful.

13:20 A friend was just telling her story of going to the hospital. The nurse told her to go into the room, take everything off and lay on the bed and wait for the doctor. Later the doctor comes in and asks "Why are you naked?". 13:37 I kind of understand how these people feel. Last year I had a kidney stone so the urologist had to take a look "down there" and later someone else did a testicular scan. Now one might feel embarrassed but I figure, these are doctors, they see this every day. The people you refer to might think the same.
hoo ray! Got the notice since im subscribed. clicked in a heart beat! And apparently I am still not tired of seeing Turk and the doctor argue over Erasure. I laughed out loud and have a big grin on my face. I was watching see when it clicked for you since the drama was so high.
To the sweetheart thing - yeh i understand how it can make someone uncomfortable. Issue on my station is that, like Carla in this show, theres also a lot of female coworkers who appreciate that and like things that can get you in trouble with others. So if you are new to a station, id recommend observing how things are there before you say something, cause if you do you might ruin it for everyone else and than everyone hates you. Read the room. sometimes a "sweetheart" is meant as honest appreciation and aknowledgement and not as sexist demeaning term. Im btw a male nurse in a country where "nurse" is always female (grammaticly) and i regularely see patients brains melt when they see a male hospital worker and it aint a doctor. I guess my favorite patient was an elderly guy who just started calling me "Master" XD
As a doctor you have to know how immensely destructive sleep deprivation is. Not only to yourself overall but also for your performance and ability to retain and learn. If pretty much anyone in the field knows this so well, why does a work environment persist that facilitates errors, a bad lifestyle and health disadvantages?
Heh, good fun. Say, as to the opening title X-ray, it always seemed to me as if it had been altered in some way, as if someone had written a word or name on the lower left of the image, then blurred it out. I've spent many episodes trying to decipher what it might say, or if it is nothing but my imagination.

JD put a penny in the door so the Janitor had to fix it. That was the start of it all.
Love this series! I especially can't wait until you react to the Brendan Frasier and Michael J Fox episodes. This show seriously utilizes guest stars amazingly.
Don't forget the Dick Van Dyke episode. A really difficult situation for everyone, but one that really shows that care for patient comes first.
JD sabotaged the side door to the Hospital by putting a penny into the door track. The Janitor had to spend several hours trying to fix it and JD came by and taunted him.
in the pilot, the janitor was supposed to be a figment of JD's imagination, but by the end of season 1 everyone liked him so much they kept him lol
I really enjoyed the way Dr. Wen's eyes sparkled with amusement after seeing Turk's reaction to the music. He just had to rub it in :D
You'll be happy to know that eventually Elliot flips the power dynamic into her favor and no one on this show has any power over her.
To answer the question about why the janitor hates JD, to this I say, 🎶 "It all started with a penny in a door.." 🎶
Me when Doctor Crystal doesn't upload a reaction of Scrubs for a few days : "I miss it so much it hurts sometimes"
😂😂😂
When I was recently in the hospital, the nurses would use my room for breaks. My roommate was catatonic and they didn't give a toot about me being there. There would literally be 3 or 4 nurses sitting in the corner of my room complaining about things and smoking out the window. This is how I know they make 9 dollars an hour, as they were in my room complaining about it to each other A LOT.
omg i had no idea :D this is so hilarious and awesome...if i ever ever need surgery i hope the surgeon listens to "smooth operator" XD
Why is "sweetheart" problematic, but not when Carla calls JD "Bambi"?
There’s seriously not enough scrubs reactions on youtube! Keep it up!
(you can trim out Season 9 though)
there is no season 9 what are you talking about
Apparently the Janitor was going to be a figment of JD's imagination.
"dr.Cox - pretty chill guy".
14:00 - You just described every guy who has ever walked into a men's locker room at a gym and get blindsided by old dudes butt naked and socializing.
I'd be psyched if I were having surgery and they started playing Erasure before I went under.
This is the exact thing I've been waiting for since the series started, a professional review! Thank you for getting into my decade long wish. As a note, with the angeoadema, I would've though dyes first since it looks like it's only on the lips. I'm an electrician though
Enjoyed this one again! Like I am watching it with you! Looking forward to the next one. And all your other videos, as always! 😘
I know how you watch the episodes now lol, I did the same. The split into 5 parts with the commercials is dreadful. Why doesn’t you watch 4 episodes at a time? You can then split them to show every Monday. It’s let’s you binge watch and already have content
I used to call men buddy and women flower, mostly because I can never remember workmates names, but I seen the error of my way, now I call everybody buddy, or buddro or buddarino, its a one name for all unisex deal.I genuinely have a horrific memory for names so it's kind of out of necessity.
I’m stealing buddarino
Great video! Episode 4 is a very memorable one and gets a lot of praise from fans so already looking forward to your next react.
I suggest Scrubs S5 E8 because it deals with a morbidity & mortality review which I do not remember ever seeing talked about on a doctor video.
You can totally record two of these back to back and just release the vids on diff days. We need more!
Something to keep in mind regarding the sweetheart stuff this was set around 20 years ago. A much different time.
Gained a new subscriber. I watch this series at least once a year. I’ve seen other doctor reacts but the fact you are going through the series makes me happy. Will be anxiously awaiting the next one!
Super excited to find this! I love scrubs and always wanted to know if the med stuff was accurate at all
She hasn’t uploaded in a while, hope she’s good
You doctors are so critical, my gosh it's a comedy.
YESSS YOU'RE WATCHING IT ALLL?! Subscribed!
Janitor hates JD because he broke the door the first day and he spent all the day to fix it
I miss it so much it hurts sometimes! Uhumm... i meen... wished you uploaded more.
Calling dr. Cox chill guy :D Just wait and binge watch while filming to get us more episodes :D
I'm so stoked to see you watch this series
Just leaving a comment for the algorithm. Loving your commentary, your sincerity and your enjoyment of the series.
I really look forward to watching the rest of the series with you. Scrubs is the best! Let's up the upload rate!
the janitor thing is cause the janitor thinks he placed a penny in the door his first day it's in the first episode bit pretty subtle
Love your reaction! If you get around to season 4, that's my favorite.
hoo ray!
Got the notice since im subscribed. clicked in a heart beat!
And apparently I am still not tired of seeing Turk and the doctor argue over Erasure. I laughed out loud and have a big grin on my face. I was watching see when it clicked for you since the drama was so high.
😂😂😂 it was so serious
Please make more of this!! I love this how and I love your medical and nonmedical comments 💖
I've spent many episodes trying to decipher what it might say, or if it is nothing but my imagination.
jd really did put a penny in the door
Remember the first episode, Janitor thinks JD put a Penny in the door
“They’re still besties” 👀👀👀
The Janitor dislikes JD because of a penny.
