$20 Sword vs $200 Sword: We Put Them to the Test!

- This week for Weapons Wednesday, I wanted to test the difference between an inexpensive sword versus a mid-range samurai sword.

Thank you for having cheap swords! I’m 13 and I don’t get much of an allowance but I made 55 bucks and was left with $47 and I really want a strong sturdy yet unsharpened sword, then I come across your amazing prices and now I found a really nice one on your site so thank you!😁😁😁😁

I’ve got two of those short swords. They are the same length as escrima sticks and I use them the same way in stick katas.
Believe it or not I sliced up a watermelon for my wife last week with my ww2 katana!
I love that you are whacking that solid tree dummy! And beating the blades together! NICE!!!
My take is the short sword is for “survivalist” standard stainless which can’t be hardened but you don’t want it to be. You want to be able to sharpen it with a file. And you don’t want it to snap when when prying out roots when foraging. It will cut small branches for the camp site. And for double stick fighting and self defense. You don’t want your blade to break. And you can repair it and get back to life. The katana held up pretty well. It’s designed for cutting flesh with a small amount of bone. Not cutting down a trees. Every blade is designed for a purpose. Axes are made to cut things like “Woody”. Also a side note samurai wood deflect a strike with the back of a blade so as not to harm that precious edge they need to survive another battle. Side note a spring steel blade katana would not bend
like yours did. If you get your swords from longquan they do make a spring steel blade katana. I think that for their intended purpose that they both did their job well! I’d give them both a 10 outta 10! Great job Kyle!!!

@@Karatemart u got it! Always happy to contribute when it comes to one of my first loves! It been an obsession with me since I made my first sword in 1973. Happened to be a katana! Since then I have made for people all over the world blades. I’ve kept it on a “hobby” kind of basis so it always feels new and fun.
I was very very lucky to have known someone who trained in Japan as a martial artist when I was 17. He taught me how to make a katana. Took me 6/8ish months to make in my stepfathers shop. At that point I was hooked! I’ve made European/Viking bladed weapons and Asian weapons. I always go back to Asian especially Japanese. It’s in fact the style of martial arts I still take. I’m actually gonna go into my shop right now to build an Okinawan weapon cause I just got a new tool for my lathe! Maybe I’ll send you one in appreciation for “WEAPONS WEDNESDAY”!

Softer steels are still steel, so it's not like they're actually "soft." Softer steels also aren't without their advantages either. They sharpen very fast, which can compensate for their low durability, and they're also not as brittle, which can protect them from breaking/cracking. I still wouldn't want to get hit with something cheap and light like the one in this video. It definitely ain't gonna tickle.
Also, softer doesn't mean less sharp. You can sharpen bronze to a razor edge. Softer just means less edge retention, so they'll dull faster.

In my experience SOME and this is not by any means the norm, but some cheap knives are equally as tough and as good as expensive ones

Great question! While the historical evidence is very limited, generally ninjato are represented as a straight bladed sword instead of a katana with a curved blade. Thanks so much for watching!
@@Karatemart wat most call ninjatou has been proven to come from a tsurugi ^^ a straight bladed Japanese sword. The ninjatou can also b said as getting it design from choukutou. In all honesty there is no such thing as a special ninja sword called ninjatou found in Japanese history. How ever square tsuba r found but there jst tsuba for katana. However this doesn't mean a ninjatou can't exist it its made as a proper sword ^^ then ya that fantasy can b a reality^^ also I'm loving this channel ^^
