The red Parmalat car near the beginning of the video is the Brabham BT46B, a Formula 1 car from 1978. Niki Lauda drove it to victory in its one and only race before being withdrawn from competition. Previous to that, the Chaparral 2J was a fan car built for the Can-Am series in 1970.

Americans don't know about Brabham... they live in a sheltered country, when it comes to Cars and Music...
Brabham designed, built and raced his own car, and won the world championship... Ask any American motorsport fan, and they would not have a clue...

The F1 car is a Brabham BT46B from 1978. The Brabham BT46B only competed once, but it did bring home the trophy in its single outing with Niki Lauda behind the wheel before the rest of the field complained that they would quit F1 if it was allowed to race again and was thus banned.

Story of Texan Jim Hall of Chaparral cars with his 2J Can Am sucker car from 1970 eight years before the F1 car Got banned quickly.
Just like Jim Hall using a moving aerofoil wing around 1965, well before their use in F1.
His 2D coupe won the 1967 1000 km of Nurburgring even though it used an automatic transmission based on the Chevrolet 2 speed production version. Beat the Ferraris and Ford GT 40 cars etc.
Jim Hall was an amazing innovator ahead of his time but not as widely known as he deserves.

The first fan car built for competition was the Chaparral 2J, entered into the largely no-holds-barred Can Am series. The brainchild of Jim Hall, it debuted in 1970 featuring two massive fans from the cooling system of the M109 Howitzer on the back.

Yep, nothing complicated here. Just a car that weighs less than a Ford Fiesta and has 1000bhp. Then you turn on the fan/suction and it weighs twice as much, but it still only weighs the same as before. So it can still accelery-ate as fast as before, but with twice the grip! A win win win situation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I discovered this car last night and I am equal amounts in love with and terrified of it!!! If we ever get this thing sold here in the states, I would gladly sit in this car if I’m allowed to, but due to personal health reasons, and depending on the scenario, (also my lack of a driver’s license) I don’t think I’d be comfortable driving this thing! IF I’m given permission on a private course, and have everything set to the lowest setting, MAYBE I might give it a whirl or two. (I have a go kart that goes about 24 kph, or 14.91 mph, and I think going a bit faster, like around 30 kph or 18.64 mph might be my personal limit…or probably however fast a standard Rollercoaster goes…)
But until that day comes…I know what car I’ll be drawing a whole bunch!!!🛞🛞🛞

Ultimately, we won’t be holding our breath for fans to make a reappearance at the racetrack anytime soon (except novelty car shows like FOB). Worldwide, regulations against movable aerodynamic devices have remained in place and only gotten more restrictive as teams pushed the boundaries in various ways. The complaints about debris will remain, and as with the ground effect era, it’s likely such devices would lead to corner speeds getting high enough to test the limits of human endurance. Regardless, the technology remains a fantastically interesting one, for the sheer performance it promises and the manner in which it burned so brightly for such a short time.
