My Final Model Train Video From California

- With our upcoming move to a new house in Washington state, this is going to be the final model train video I'll make here at our California house. Upon completion of this video, the last of my model train stuff got packed up in boxes in preparation for the move.
Featured in the video is a model of an Amtrak passenger train by MTH trains. A second locomotive can also be briefly seen during a few parts of the video... it's a nearly identical model from MTH but with the Santa Fe warbonnet paint scheme for the AT&SF.
This layout was built for speed, with mostly R3 curves and just a few R2 curves in places where space was a little tight. This allows the Amtrak train, one of the fastest in my collection, to reach some pretty good speeds on the layout.
You might be wondering about the tacky furniture in my living room, made out of 2x4s. That's something temporary I built, just to use for the next few weeks until our move. I sold off our entire oak furniture set because it wouldn't have fit in with the decorating scheme at our new house. But I still needed something to put my Canon printer on until the move! So, I just slapped something together that would get the job done for a few weeks.
You might also be surprised to see me wearing glasses while making my closing comments at the end of the video. I don't normally wear glasses in my RUclips videos, but I thought I would for this one just because I just got that new pair and think it's an interesting look for me! I thought I'd try it out in this video, and see if anybody said anything in the comments. Also, it was a fun experiment to see how far I could stand from the camera and still be able to read the teleprompter! Normally, without glasses, I can't get more than about three feet in front of the camera. With the glasses, I was able to stand about ten feet out in front of it.
There's a song featured prominently about 8 minutes in to the video. The name of the song is "Horses & Trains" and it was performed by Jesse Gallagher.

It's hard to believe that 5 years ago this is where it all started, and now this chapter has come to an end. Certainly enjoyed watching the trains run all over this house throughout the years, but I'm really looking forward to seeing them running around the new place in Washington. I remember watching one of your home tour videos and I could already see the trains running around the cement walkway in the backyard. Really anticipating seeing that sight for sure. It's great to hear from you. There's still about four weeks until our move. Too bad the epidemic has only gotten worse since the last time we saw you. It would have been fun to gotten together for some train fun one last time. Sadly, now they're all packed up and ready for the move.

To me, when some of us move out of our old houses, these are our lives.
You have lived in San Luis Obispo, California near Grover Beach, where the Amtrak passenger trains pass through without stopping or coming to a stop at the station before heading for San Diego and Los Angeles for 22 years.
You run the Santa Fe Railway General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive #868 and the Amtrak passenger train lead by a General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive #500 from MTH Electric Trains through the house in California one last time before you, Jim Zim, your wife and the G scale model trains from Bachmann, LGB, MTH Electric Trains, and Piko moved to the new house in Washington state.
And you also show us the Doppler sound effect where the diesel locomotives are coming towards us blowing their air horns and the sound of the air horns shift as the diesel locomotives zoomed right past us.

A couple of corrections...
I lived in Grover Beach, near San Luis Obispo. (Not the other way around.)
Most Amtrak passengers trains that travel that route do stop in Grover Beach, but there are a few that do not.

The Doppler Effect… I knew that it is spoken of in regards to radar. (Didn’t pay too much attention.) Interesting that that same effect relates to train whistles!
Jim, here’s another idea maybe smiles too. One of your next cruises, bring a Z scale train to run on your balcony with video. Combine the kid in you and the adult kid in his element...cruising.
My wife and I did very seriously sit down during a cruise one time and plot out what would be needed to do a model-trains-on-a-cruise-ship video. It was really just a little too much stuff to have to bring along. As it is, I generally take two full suitcases with me on a cruise. One is normal cruise stuff like clothes and all those things everybody brings, and another is all the tech stuff I need to really do high quality videos while onboard. To add model trains to that would just end up being too much stuff, I think.

Hello just wanna say thanks for ur awesome train videos. My son is 5 years old he is nonverbal, autistic and has adhd. Well he somehow came across your’e train videos all by himself (he is very smart) on his little tablet and absorbing loves them all lol he is just starting to talk and say words and found a video you did saying all the trains names (his favorite) now he yells all the names along with you over and over lol he has a few plastic trains we found at a yard sale we’re trying to collect all the ones names he can say so please don’t take these videos down and keep it up thank you.

Hello Jim. Good luck with the move and getting relocated in Washington state. My wife and I are going to do roughly the same thing a year from now so in July 2021 we’re going to move to South Carolina we’ve already purchased a brand new house and it’s almost 3000 ft.². The best part is the second floor is like one huge room they call it a loft. That’s where I’m gonna build my train layout for retirement. The first part of the layout will be O Scale 2 Rail. And after I get that done I will start on the upper level of HO scale. All of my O Scale 2 Rail is made by atlas model railroad company. Presently we live in a suburb of Chicago called Villa Park Illinois. One of the many things I’m looking forward to by going down to South Carolina. by the wayit’s near Myrtle Beach South Carolina. No more snowy winters. Anyway good luck jim and will be looking forward to your next video in late September. Mr. Bill CNW

Jim Zim Thank you Jim I’m looking forward to retirement actually I’ve been retired for a couple years now. But my wife’s got one more year to go on her job. So it’s gonna be a long year to wait for the final move. But the nice thing is my wife gets eight weeks of vacation a year so every couple months we’re going to go down there spend a week or two at a time and enjoy your new home. Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't like diesels American or British. I was hoping for a steam engine like Thomas, yet we can't always get what we want. Make sure none of your trains are mislaid on the move, it's very easy to lose something when moving home. I've experienced it myself. In the meantime, I'm sure you and your wife will be doing The Locomotion dance together after you've settled into your new home. Have fun. Nothing beats playing with trains all day.

Hey jim how was it when you had the AMTRAK train
What is the curve track pieces that you have/recommend I am using the curves that come in a lgb starter set 1100 curves I hear that the bigger trains don't like those tighter curves. Have you ever had any problems with this . I don't want to get any big trains that might have problems on my layout.
The ones that come with the starter sets are the tightest curves, known as R1 curves. I try to avoid those if at all possible. I mostly use R2 curves, which are a wider curve than the R1. If I have even more room available to fit a larger curve, I use R3 curves.
The layout you see in this video uses R2 and R3 curves. That section through the dining room area, for example, is R2 curves. You can actually hear the train speed up as soon as it gets past that point. The tighter the curve, the more the curve slows the train. The big curves in the living room and the garage are, where I had more space available to me, are R3 curves.

It depends on what you mean by "going".
If you mean are any of the Thomas trains going to come up with me to the new house in Washington... yes, all of them are.
If you mean am I looking to get rid of any of the Thomas trains... that would be a no.
And Winston and Toby we're not the last Thomas and Friends Bachmann large-scale are items they make the spiteful brakevan which only appear there didn't want Thomas and Friends episode called Donald and Douglas where is what the Americans like to call it brake van the spiteful brakevan great to buy try setting up Thomas Percy James Emily and Toby with all of the freight cars just remember to put away Annie and clarabel and Emily's coaches who do you think should travel with a spiteful brakevan are you interested in the spiteful brakevan I want to hear your answer because it would look good on the back of James's goods train or Toby's but do you want to make some customs like eagle the red engine eagle the red engine is just like James only with red wheels do you want to get a spare James and get the NWR on the tender and how about give Emily the number 12 because in Thomas and Friends Emily is now the number 12 engine

I hate to be the one that tells you but Washington is just Northern California.
I paid over $10,000 in California state income tax last year. Will pay $0 in Washington next year. That alone makes it worthwhile, but there are about a dozen other reasons why the move to Washington makes sense for us. So, there are some significant differences between the two states. Plus, here on the California coast, it's been foggy about 90% of the mornings this summer. It's simply impossible to eat breakfast out on my patio on the California coast. At our home in Washington, it should be possible for most of May through the end of September. I'm looking forward to it.
