The First Backyard Model Train Video From Our New House

- A month after moving in to our new house, I've set up my G-scale model trains on a massive layout in the back yard. I run the White Pass Railway diesel freight train and the Santa Fe Super Chief on a gigantic loop of track around the yard. Just to do that one loop required thousands of dollars of track!
I use a DCC power supply and control system for the trains, and can operate it all from a tablet or cell phone. The speed of each train can be adjusted independently of the others, and from the tablet I can also operate the horn (or whistle) on each locomotive.
If you'd like to buy one of those White Pass steam locomotives, they're available at www.trainworld...
The orange re-railer tool that is shown at the one minute point in the video is available at www.trainworld...
The version of the Santa Fe Super Chief that is shown in this video is an old model that is no longer available. The new version is available at www.trainworld...
Some of the video clips in this model train video were shot with a Canon EOS DSLR, others were shot with a GoPro, and the aerial shots were done using a DJI Mavic Mini drone.
Most of the trains and tracks that you see in the video were purchased from www.trainworld.com
At the very end of the video there's a shot of Emily from Thomas & Friends running on the layout. You'll see more of her and other Thomas and Friends trains in my next model train video... to be uploaded to RUclips about a week or two after this one.

No Jim you didn't have a senior moment, you had a Gomez Addams moment, you are living the good life enjoy 👍
My little boy was so excited to see this video. Everything looks great Jim!
Love seeing your blessings. Enjoy and so your living your life Golden. Thanks for sharing.
This is the first time that you, Jim Zim, will run your G scale model trains in the backyard of the house in Washington.
You have all of your G scale model trains to choose from in your collection of G scale model trains.
Somebody has to be the first one to run on the new layout.
You are going to pick one.
You heard people already shouting: "Thomas the Tank Engine! Run Thomas!" "Toby! I want Toby! Please pick Toby!"
And so, you will run the Piko brand White Pass and Yukon Route Railway steam locomotive #52 pulling freight cars from the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway first.
You have a handy gadget for helping you get the G scale model trains on to the tracks, that orange tool is called a re-railer and it can easily get the G scale model trains on to the tracks and they will go through the special door that is designed for G scale model trains and they will go right to the backyard.
We also see the LGB Santa Fe Super Chief passenger train lead by an EMD F7 diesel locomotive #202, and the Valvoline Train #49 made by Bachmann.
This is Thomas Comeau and as always, I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!
Looks great Jim! Nice job on the drone footage. I sure wish I had your back yard for my train and gardening hobbies!
I watched two ads to support him. love your models:D
I really like that concrete walkway in the backyard for the trains!
Me too! That was a really important feature of the back yard design that I wanted to be sure to have. None of my neighbors have one, and when the house was under construction and people saw that big cement path they were all wondering what is was for! I talked to some of my neighbors later and they told me their theories on what that cement path was going to be for... I remember one thought it would be some kind of race track for kids.
When the horn is blasting, wonder if your neighbors can hear it?
If they were out in their yard, they would hear it... but not if they were in their house.
Thats exactly what I was thinking!
I love how you give us a warning for the commercial like an actual tv show i love your content
The new yard is like a blank and almost infinite canvas. I see three tracks running in parallel with off shoots into the landscaping - tunnels, bridges, sky (and track budget) is the limit! I bet your creative juices are running overtime.
That's exactly how I see it... a blank canvas that I can get creative with. I wish I had "before" pictures from our yard in California to show people how I transformed that one. I'm enjoying working my magic on this big new one. Between now and the Spring, about the only things that will change will be the addition of river rocks around those evergreen trees. But come Spring time... things will start to get really interesting! Like you said, the budget is the biggest limit. I'm not really thrilled about forking out another $2000 for track just to be able to run a second line around the cement path... but I'm definitely going to do that. I do like your suggestion of ultimately having three tracks run on the path, but that's another $2000... so that won't be right away! I've thought about doing a Patreon page like a lot of RUclipsrs do, and seeing if anyone in the audience wants to help pay for more track, but I hate the idea! I prefer the channel to be advertiser funded, not viewer funded. I might change my mind on that someday, but for now I'm sticking with the current plan because it seems a little tacky to have to ask for handouts!
Thanks for the train ride around your new backyard on the White Pass.
Amazing! My grandson LOVES trains and can’t wait to show him your amazing layout. Enjoy and great job. Looking forward to seeing more videos.
Excellent video work Jim. Thanks for posting.
The area where the train goes by the hot tub you can name it, "Hot Springs Pass" 😉
A wonderful garden railroad got there! Spectacular job!
Jim, the name dead man's curve was used in the 1991 movie "The Addams Family".
I know! And also in a song by the Beach Boys in the 1960s.
I know that as well
@@JimZim I LOVE YOUR WOODEN REEFERS
@Ezekiel Renteria its a fun family movie buddy. Lmk what you think. Enjoy.
That is ONE BIG backyard you have there!
I really like the long straight stretches of track, something not normally seen on model train layouts (outside or inside). The lack of appropriate scale trees, mountains, buildings, etc. does not take away from pleasure of running the trains.
Came here to get ideas to possibly build an outdoor railroad for my 3yr old son. I just wanted to say you have a beautiful yard!
Man you weren’t kidding when you said your gonna hav a huge backyard, but also fun fact down in Cleveland Ohio there’s actually a part on the highway near one of the small airports called deadman’s curb because of the fact it’s a sharp turn and many many many trucks and cars have flipped there, and yes no one has died there... I don’t think at least
Just came across your channel, it’s amazing of what you have. I was very proud of my H scale train set which took up half of my basement with a double tracks setting which allowed me to run two trains simultaneously at opposite directions as well as crossing each other’s track. Comparing to your setup, it’s nothing. Great work.
i love the sata fe super chief warbonet paint scheme
Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
Well done Jim!! What an amazing set up. Looking forward to future train videos. Greetings from Australia.
You have the best train yard ever I wish I had an big one like you :)
Your house is very pretty with a very big humongous backyard Jim Zim to have a whole lot of room to play your bunch of your model trains all around the house. I bet a lot of people will like your new RUclips videos Jim Zim when you live in Washington state now. And by the way my name is Haley Rhianne Yates, and I enjoyed your new videos in Washington state Jim Zim. I love you Jim Zim.
Welcome to SE WA when this covid thing ends we can get together and play trains
try running the engines at night that would look amazing
That’s a crazy amount of backyard. Love it!
my backyard has a ton of space with no fences
Hey Jim here’s an idea, a double header video.
You just put a few double headers on you’re layout, and ride them around.
Awesome! Great photo shots! My favorite is the Santa Fe. 🙂
Would love a backyard like this. The Amtrak train is my favorite!
Awesome layout, definitely like the brick fence around your yard, beautiful house as well
Congrats on the new house!! It is beautiful and well deserved 🍾🥂🥂
It’s really cool to see the trains pull cargo or a lot of cargo I should say there’s something about a train pulling freight carts that’s so relaxing to watch
Your channel is incredible. Keep posting videos.
Nice place and hugh backyard. It's going to look awesome when you finish that half acre land. 😊
Living the dream, Love it.
The Santa Fe is my all time favorite I have one as a ho scale
My 5 year old son loves your channel!!
Thanks, Karen! Please say hello to him for me!
Welcome to Washington. I would love to have all that space for gardening.

"no one's died here in the backyard, yet"
hmmm
Thank you for being the only one so far to mention my witty line! I was very proud of that one.
Jim Zim haha it was pretty funny along with you poking fun at the fans who get mad when you don’t run Thomas
@@JimZim Jim Zim was the Imposter
@@JimZim are you 100% sure no one died in the backyard?
Notice when he said..... YET you gonna kill someone hmmm?

New house
Now that is something, love it
⭐️excellent 1st choice ⭐️
That is really awesome. The train level view on the Super Chief made it look almost real. I love seeing multiple trains running at once.
Wait until you see my next video, to be released towards the end of next week. I put a GoPro on the side of the last car on the Super Chief and got some incredible video. I think it's actually one of my best. I can't wait for the world to see it! You very much get the feeling that you're popping your head out the window of a real train for a ride around my yard. Also, because of the way I placed the camera, you don't see any dirt in my yard... so it makes the yard look awesome and the house looks like some kind of palace. I think folks will be impressed when they see it!
Awesome! Love it!!!!!!!! Cool model train collection!!!!!👍
Welcome to the evergreen state, Jim!
Ok
VERY GOOD VIDEO AWESOME LAYOUT AND JUST BE CAREFUL LOVE THE HOUSE AND PROPERTY I DO APPRECIATE IT AND YOU JIM. I ALSO LOVE TRAINS AND YOUR INFORMATION AND COMMENTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT THANK YOU AGAIN JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA G SCALE IS AWESOME AND EXPENSIVE I AM DOING HO FOR MY BASEMENT LAYOUT. NOT AS BIG BUT MINE IS COOL TO ME. THANKS AGAIN AWESOME GOOD VIDEO...JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA 👍😷😷😁🚂🚂📸DRONE WAS COOL INDEED.
The zim curve letters make me think of the Hollywood sign in California
From cruise ships to model trains is but one step! ;-)
Amazing! Would love to actually see it in person! Hope the weathers good over there, shout out from Seattle!
Let me know if you ever will be making a trip out this way, and we'll see if that lines up with a day when I have the trains set up. Over the winter, I probably won't have the trains up much. The rest of the year... maybe a few days per month. If it ever lines up with a time you'd be in the Tri Cities for something, you'd be welcome to visit.
The weather has definitely changed from last week! We had our first rain yesterday. But because we're on the dry side of the Cascades, our rainy morning yesterday only brought .15 inch of rain, where in your area I imagine it was a lot more than that! 😎
That's a great House and a great backyard layout. I should try something like this someday if I have a friend that likes trains as much as me.
The great jim zim railway, btw are g scale models of union pacific available?Love ur videos sir from india🇮🇳🇮🇳
I can't imagine the possibilities as far as an active volcano somewhere in middle of the, 'island'.
Complete with an Arby's...
Looks great Jim!
Mr Jim I wanna thank you sir ^^ I got into model trains because you and your videos are very informative about running g scale engines I have a custom made percy engine I worked on and I will be posting a video soon ^^
I'm happy to have inspired you!
So here I sit, watching your White Pass RR model train while my computer’s screensaver just happens to be showing photos of our Princess Alaska Cruisetour and our trip on the White Pass RR. We’re booked to go again in May 2021, hope it happens!
i love the w p n 52
That's cool
Image of someone used that amount of space for a N scale layout
*Y E S*
or a z scale layout
Like that side view with the Santa Fe super chief, that was cool 😊😊
Wishing you the best
Nice house
the train that I love I love both the white pass trains
Have you ever considered building a permanent garden layout? With a large yard like that, you can get a very nice sized layout in there.
That's actually one of the questions people ask most frequently. For me, the fun is in setting up a slightly different layout every time I get my trains out. A permanent layout would bore me. I like to mix it up a little each time and do something a little different than I've done before. And I don't have the patience or attention to detail to do scenery, buildings, etc. I just like creating new layouts, and running the trains!
So We Sing The Firehouse Stomp! in The Beginning! + the I Love Toy Trains Theme Song!
My favorite locomotive is your NS first responder locomotive
I know this wouldn’t look too awesome, but I think you should have the white pass steam locomotive #52 pulling the Santa Fe passenger cars from the Santa Fe super chief going around the layout, this is just a thought.
Wonderful Jim..
How much fun is this. Great Job Jim.
Awesome video liked 🚂👍🚄
👍fantastic 👍
Hi Jim, just had to click on and see the first video from the new house. Strangely, as you took us outside and I saw the view towards the backyard, I thought the yard looked big. I guessed at half an acre. Go figure. I also checked out the link to your website and the page about Diablo Canyon Power Plant. A very interesting read as my 85 y.o. Father spent 32 years working for the SECV, the State Electricity Commission, Victoria, here in Australia. He spent most of his career working at Monash House, Melbourne CBD. Monash House was named after the first Chairman of the SEC, Sir John Monash. Civil Engineer and Major General of British Forces (and some American) on the Western Front of WWI. Only the second man ever to be Knighted in the Field by his Monarch. Monash is also pictured on the Australian $100 note and has a major University, a major Hospital and a major Freeway all named in his honour here in Melbourne. My Father also spent plenty of time traveling to and from the Latrobe Valley where the majority of the SECV Generation Stations were. He also undertook studies into the various power generation options, including looking into Nuclear power and renewables in 1969, but with large reserves of Brown Coal in the Latrobe Valley the choice was made.
I am 55 and work as a Maintenance Carpenter at a large private school in Melbourne. My welding bay is actually under a part of the Main Oval. We are also situated near the Shrine of Remembrance, which Sir John Monash was heavily involved in establishing.
Great to see you getting settled in and getting organized 👍 LOVE IT😁😁😁👍👍
Love it
Love it!
And I really like Amtrak and Santa Fe super cheap because they’re the coolest trains
Hi Jim, dead man's curve, if you find a loco that doesn't run you could make it look like it has jumped the tracks and hit a tree, and find a skeleton to put by the loco, good video, gave me some ideas for my layout?!
Thomas: Aw man I can't believe I didn't get picked!
Amtrak: shut up Thomas!
White pass: we never liked you anyway Thomas!
Toy story much
