*”I can’t do the splits but my hair can do the splits”*
I never choked so hard😂😂
"Throw the whole head away!" I have had this feeling after some real bad cuts when I was younger :P hahaha
I'm not that picky about how my hair is cut, but the styling. I mean, can ANYONE make my hair look decent after a cut besides me? No matter who cuts it or how, I have to go home and either refresh (if I'm lucky) or full-on wet it all down and restyle completely.
Also, thank you for putting away the idea that only a dry cut will work for curly hair. That is another one of those curly girl myths that keeps getting perpetuated.
I also have to restyle my hair everytime I leave the salon
i just tell them to braid it, leave the braid in for a day or two, and then rewash it
Same... here no matter how many times I say I like lots of volume & wind blown look. I usually leave looking like an Older lady (I’m 60young) or Q-tip. For over 3yrs I’ve been to 5 different salons. They were all the same. Couldn’t figure out my hair. Got word 2m ago my curly hair guy was back . I made apt right away n he Fixed my cut. He was kinda mortified by what he saw. He gave me the Cut I’ve been looking for but still went home and styled the way I like ! Lol
I run home and restyle my hair! No one can do my hair like me..
Linda Grace me 2. i just cut my hair a week ago (dry) and my curls love it..
I am a hairdresser also. I haven't done it professionally in a few years though. I can't find anyone to cut my hair right and it doesn't ever feel even when I do it. I need more layers, like a round layer cut, but everyone just wants to cut my hair in long layers. You should do more videos on haircuts, on curly hair or mannequins that we could learn from. That would be sooooo cool!!!!
Third!
Go find someone who cuts curl by curl. I didn’t try it yet but people are swearing by it.
I agree!
How about a diy curly haircut on dry hair, rounded edges for DUMMIES
Are you talking about a vertical layered haircut? Deeper layers looks good on thick curly hair hair
From my experience, when I get a dry cut, I cannot straighten my curly hair without it looking like a bad haircut. However, when I get a haircut after my hair has been straightened, my curls look great when I style them naturally, and I can straighten my hair knowing that my layers and bangs do not look so choppy.
Thank you for sharing💖💖

My stylist cuts my hair while it is straightened and i love the way my curls look after! My curls bounced back beautyfully!!

I love that your videos are so nonbiased. People are usually so headstrong in their own ways that they never show you the benefits of the other ways as well. So thank you!! 😆
Hey Mell, for those of us who are unable to get to the salon due to the pandemic (they have closed all hair salons where I live), it would be great to have a basic cutting guide for non-professionals who need a hair cut, but can't get one. :(

I wanna know why the auto captions translated “ya mane girl Mell” to “gay mean girl mel” 😂😂😂😂
😶
Accurate
ahahahhahaahahahahahhah I totally just went back to the beginning of the vid b/c I know this is where Mel says her line and turned on the CC.... HAHAHAHH. This just made my day, I am laughing so hard for real. Thank you so much @Silent Musings on a Noisy Life for pointing this b/c I would of never ever seen this :) Y'all are awesome, her fans/followers are so awesome. FYI thanks Mel for being a trooper ;)
Lmao that is beautiful
I have definitely to use the caption bc she talks very fast and I'm a Mexican curly girl. It's very common to see weird things in the captions and I'm like 🤔😂
Aww I really love your darker roots, I think the contrast with your hair and skin looks so good! But it's your hair so do you..
I learned how to diffuse, style and all that to my curly hair and been loving my hair. I also use a bonnet so my hair stays beautiful. You have helped me. Because I would of never known somethings without you or my aunt who works at a hair salon.
SO EXCITED! I'm excited every Texture Tuesday, but this is a video I really need (didn't realize how much I needed it).
Hope you and your family are doing well
I've learned more about my curly hair with your videos than anywhere else. I can already see a difference in the way they look and learning to love them. Thank you. You and sister brighten my day with your videos.
Haters: Well Mell...
Kanhair West: yo Imma let you finish but Manes By Mell has one of the best hair cut tutorials of all time.
I just came back from getting my hair cut dry (on straightened hair) for the first time. She did an AMAZING job! Thanks for all your info!!
we stan this queen so much, love her so much ❤️she always gives us all the curlTEA with laughs included 🤭 thank u 💕
1,000%! Mel is one of the bright spots on Tuesdays
I'm actually going for a trim next Friday and I always feel guilty about straightening my hair to cut it since I always keep my hair curly now. This has really helped me. Thank you Mel.
Thank you for making this video. I’ve had curly cuts, dry straight hair cuts and wet cuts. It was nice to see the blatant difference side by side 😉.
I can’t imagine anyone doing this on themselves! You’re awesome!
When she says "take notes"..she means that literally. I'm watching for the fourth time. Very good info.
I am SOOOOOO Blessed. I met my hair goddess in beauty school and she is not only my best friend she's been doing my hairs for over 20 years. She knows my hairs well!!
This video could not have come at a better time, I’m getting a haircut this Friday 👏🏽 YOU’RE AMAZING!
I have never been this early!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭 omg girl you have CHANGED MY LIFE! I started my curly hair journey because of you and I’m just over a month in!💕
Thank you so much Mell❤ just tried some of your tips for definition and my hair already looks so much better! and I'll definitely try these tips in my next cut. btw that color of your shirt looks so good on you!!
I just found your channel today and am binging your videos. Just wanted to say thank you for addressing having different curl patterns! I've always felt very alone in that. My hair is also way curlier on the top of my head, and discovering dry cuts was a game changer for me.
Girl you are AMAZING!!!!! 💖💖💖 Thank you so much for making these videos!!! I’ve been cutting my long curly hair at home with your videos and my hair is the best it’s ever been 😭🙏🏽🔥
Yessss girl 😂❤️ I freaking love your videos
This is why YOU, are the hair queen!💜
I love and appreciate how thorough you are! Thank you for that! 💜
I missed your big hair!!!! Ok. Now back to the informational portion of this video.
Finding your channel is a blessing! I'm so happy!
As a curly hair specialist in the NYC area I love this comparison!! Really good reference for both stylists and clients to see what works best.
Thank you so much!! 💕 Losing an extra inch to show this side by side was worth it knowing it’s helpful to see! 🙌🏻
Lmaooo I noticed that but it’s all worth it 😂
Girl you should be proud of yourself, your amazing 💜💜💜
wow thank you for saying that, my seester and i definitely are proud and your response is the reason why! thanks for the love
Thank God you posted today. Life is crazy here in Oklahoma and I NEED my Texture Tuesday!
MEL!! you straightened your hair for us!! I was getting the DevaCut for a long time and I couldn't figure out why my hair kept looking wonky 🤔 I finally let my sister who is a balayage educator cut my hair. I thought that since it wasn’t a “curly hair cut” it wouldn’t turn out well. But I’m so glad I tried. My hair looks great now! And it grows out really great as well!
Its like you read my mind Mel, looking forward to learn!😊❤
Loved this video! Very informational. I actually do the straight cut on myself once a month to get off dead ends without losing length. ( I’m not a professional but I’ve been doing my own hair for years now)
Do you literally have a video on everything? I put curly questions in the search and damn you are always first! Lol love to watch your videos. I have a straightened hair straight cut. I’m so happy you did this!
I learned I could NEVER cut my hair while straight and dry. Last year, I had to get it re-cut while curly, because one side of my hair was obviously much shorter than the other after getting a dry cut (most likely because I have different types of curls/patterns throughout my head of hair). The more ethnic/textured one's hair is, the better off she/he will be cutting and wearing their hair in it's natural state!
I find I can’t do straightened or wet, for me I have different curl patterns but mostly I think it’s just that my hair is so fine that any weight on it can pull it straight, so when I have long hair it goes straight and then curls but when I have short hair it can turn into ringlets fast, and there is no great way to deal with that in a straight or wet cut, I can deal with it in a dry cut but when it’s wet or straight it’s waaaaaay too much guesswork of where my hair is going to land
What of cutting it wet? That usually works best for me.
@@andreal3239 omg, same
So i had my own seester cut my hair (who is a professional) using the technique while the hair is dried curly because my hair has a mixed range from 2a curls to 3a curls. It worked sooo well! She was able to cut my 2a waves more shorter to a medium length so that it won’t look as awkward with my tighter curls. Thank you so much! My new haircut has given me a lot more confidence! ❤️😊
girl your hair is sooo pretty! i love it so much!!!!! 😍😍 i don’t have curly hair (i have wavy hair) but i still love your channel! ❤️
I love your curly hair 😍😍❤️
I'm so thankful for this video!!! I've been needing a cut, but between COVID-19 and me not having a stylist even before all this mess I wasn't sure what I was going to do... Now I feel like I can do it myself! Yay! 🤗
such a curly hair inspo, thank you Mell :)
I love this video❤! Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me about how should I treat my hair better when is time to cutting it 😉👍🏼
Love this video. It good to know there is not a right or wrong way to cut curly hair. Also great to know to not thin out the hair. I use to have that done but not any more.
Thanks Mel! You answered so many of my questions.
No hair left behind. 😂 I enjoy your videos, I always laugh and learn. Thank you!
yes! A video about retouching your roots!
Always smart and informative!
Literally only 2 minutes in to the video but I have to say- for my hair type a dry curly cut is a must. I was getting straight wet cuts and could figure out why my hair was always wonky and why there were gaps in my hair. It turns out it’s bc the top and front layers of my hair are very coily while the underneath back layer is more of a wavy pattern. Top would shrink up while bottom stayed close to the same creating massive gaps 🙅🏻♀️
whew ab.sol.lutel.ly! I hope youre getting better haircuts for your texture(s) now!!
My hair is the same way! Really round soft curls in the back and tight coily curls up front so I always have to ask for new stylists to dry cut it otherwise it looks like I have a mullet /:
Mines more of a top down change in patterns, but it's a massive difference. Talking stylists through wet cuts at best resulted in mediocre results that I would fine tune later. Had an exceptionally bad cut I'm still getting corrected over two years later (should have done a big chop - stylist did not believe ANYTHING I said about my hair and ignored my shaping requests specifically designed for said variance) which is when I realized it's dry curly cut or no cut for my hairs. Glad not everyone *has* to, but man! If only I'd learned sooner.
HeyitsGina! Have you tried looking on devacurl’s website? They have a list of salons that do deva cuts
I had a hairdresser once take a RAZOR to my hair, insisting it was a layering short-cut. My hair was SO frizzy from it no matter what I did, and I was so mad. She didn't even ask me first!
Thanks so much! This was so helpful and you are HYSTERICAL 💀 I really needed to hear, “It’s not that serious.” 💛
Mell: “The row
The flow
The woah
The-“
Me: *cackles* 🤣🤣🤣
Yes to a video on root colouring. I have naturally mid blonde hair with some bleach and some high lift tint highlights to disguise the sprinkle of white I have at 48 (missed out grey and went straight to white). I just put a few in the top layers and use a cool toner every few months to refresh my colour without overbleaching etc. I'm always happy to improve my technique though. Best wishes.
I'm surprised that I like the straight/wet look best. This is so incredibly helpful. I'm trying to avoid heat and grow out my hair. I've tried both ways (dry curl by curl) and wet and felt like I may have done the curl by curl wrong. But after watching this I did it right. My results weren't horrible I just didn't like them as much as when I cut my hair wet. I want length but apparently I want the cleaner look more. Lol. Who knew? Thank you so much!!
You're so welcome! I'm glad you learned something new 😍
My girl Mel doin tha most 🙌
I have 2a/2b hair that is starting to become more textured after adopting a no shampoo lifestyle.. I was thinking of trying to get one of those dry curl cuts. This video convinced me it's not necessary because I definitely prefer the "dry straight cut" look. Thanks sooo much for doing this video and solving that debate for me
Loved this! Thank you! So helpful!
Can you show how you do a dusting next time you need to do one? These hair cutting videos of yours have been really helpful and you're the only person on youtube that I trust to show and talk about ways to do a dusting properly. You've helped me understand my hair better and I am so happy that you post videos so consistently.
This video was sooooo helpful!!!! 😭 thank you! 🙏🏽
You’re so amazing! I love your video. Wet hair does in fact stretch more than dry hair, when using tension.
Submitted my testimony for your admission to the Sephora Squad 💗 love your videos, personality and education!
What a great idea! I just got a curly hair cut but I want it to look cute also if I straighten it! You are genius girl! 😊❤️👍
I just started watching...your hair at the start is 🔥 🔥🔥
My bestie is also a hairdresser and she insists on always cutting my hair (2c/3a) hair wet, your video visualized her explanation as to why
Love this video! Thank you ❤️
Another great video! I've wondered about this topic a lot, so this was very timely and informative.
Glad you enjoyed it!😍
I’m so happy I found your videos!! My daughter has curly hair and I have no clue how to care for it. My daughter is 2 and is just about to have her first hair cut. Thank you so much for all your tips 💜
Most important thing I can say is please learn how to brush it correctly, my mom never learned and I found out in high school that if you start brushing at the bottom and work your way up then it’s so much easier less painful and less damaging, for years I tried to just yank my brush through breaking the hair, and also I find personally if I brush before my shower, and optionally brush with a Denman brush (only when hair is soaking wet and has been conditioned) then I don’t brush it at all any other time it really prevents knots because when I brush it dry it separates all the curls and then they tangle with each other, you can brush with your fingers lightly when needed and you can use a bit of water on your hand to restyle it each morning, this works for my hair type but you can look up what brushes to use and methods of refreshing curly hair for different hair types
Thanks this was super helpful!!
Perfect timing, I didn't have a chance to get a haircut before we started staying indoors because of school. But now I'll be able to cute at home! Thank you so much!
Awe I’m happy to be hair for you at the perfect time!! Stay safe xoxo
You and curly hair are my LOVE 🌷
Thanks for this video. I've had dry cuts on curly hair, dry cuts on straightened hair, and wet cuts. I still prefer wet cuts, especially because I air dry my hair and go a few months without cutting.
Thank you for sharing!! and for tuning in xoxoxo
Mellllllll this was so helpful thanks 💕
I'm really glad I saw this video! I've been dry cutting curl by curl for my maintenance trims (trying to let my hair grow long again while also growing out layers). My ends are looking whispy and I didn't understand why they looked like that because I trim my ends regularly, don't use heat or chemicals and don't have split ends. I'm due for a trim and this time, I will be blunt cutting my ends while my hair is wet to make sure I get those ends! Thank you so much for the information! ^_^
This is why I have not been back to a salon 🙁 The stylist hacked my hair apart, and straighten, Geeez I told her I don't want to do that everyday day... Basically I cried for half a year,... And my current hair is nuts, and thank god I found this 🙏❤ I am just frustrated because all wavy curls on bottom, underneath, but seems flat and heavy on top.. I'm at a loss, but will keep watching and a prayer to god when I try some of this 😊🙏❤
Thank you!! That was really informative!
I am so picky with my hair but also have a hard time telling the stylist if I don't like what they have done. My curl pattern is different all over and I really like having a wet cut. The stylist that just cut my hair had me looking like Diana Ross, I love her, dried it and then cut it. I didn't tell her I didn't like the styling but i really didnt like the cut either. I went home and trimmed it a little more. I wish I could find a stylist like you with experience with textured hair💜 Love all your videos and have learned a lot💜
Thank you 💓 I cut my ends (wet cut) by myself because I'm looking for length. Once I achieve it I will try a curl by curl cut for shape 😀
Mell, thanks to your videos I've now had the courage to cut my own hair (twice now) and lol and behold! It turned out well! I have 2a-2c waves and they look much better now. Even getting a bit curlier. So thanks!
That is awesome!😍
Excellent video! Thank you
A big applause for you Mell... love the very clear informative way you've shown us the difference between the techniques. love from the Netherlands @Krullenpagina
Glad it was helpful!😍
Very helpful...I personally prefer when my hair is straight then cut. Everyone talks about getting a diva cut on your natural curly hair but, it is so expensive!
Yess root video!!
This helps so much and now I’m not so worried about cutting my hair while it’s straight
I like this video! It also would've been great to see a wet cut. There's a misconception that curly hair can't be cut wet.
Mine absolutely cannot be cut wet, I have learned through significant experience, I don’t have a consistent curl pattern and my hair is quite fine so when the length changes so does the curliness of my hair, it’s truly impossible to get a nice cut when wet, I think that’s true for any curly girl with an inconsistent curl pattern or fine hair
I Love the way you explain things, it sound so easy...
I appreciate that!😍
Love your videos!!!! I'm a trained cosmetologist too, although I've been out of the business for several years. Your curls are just about the same size/type as mine, and I'm finding your videos very helpful, as I no longer have access to any continuing education in haircutting. I'm biracial, which means my hair doesn't quite behave exactly like either ethnicity. I've always had to cut my hair myself, as I can never find anyone who understands how to deal with it. But after many years of wearing it long, I'm seriously considering going shorter with my hair, and I'm watching your videos for some ideas and inspiration. I never learned how to do dry cutting (the beauty school I went to was woefully lacking in haircutting training in general) on curly hair, so I really loved your demonstration and comparison here.
BTW, to all you curly girls out there watching Mell's videos: She is right about texturizing and slide cutting and all that. Don't let anyone do that to your curls, EV-er. I would add, don't ever let anyone cut your curls with a razor. I've had all those things done to my hair (which is why I finally gave up letting other people do anything to it), and it was SO bad. SO BAD.
You’re hair is so lovely!
Loving the roots, looks voluminous and fabulous xxxx
why thank you xoxo
Best video ever!!! thank you
Girl what. You really do live for science. You've gone too far for us! 💛💛💛💛
