    Whelping box size for large breed. Building my large dog a whelping box for cheap. Beginner friendly homemade whelping box. Do it yourself.
    Its almost time for birth day for my 1.5 year old rottweiler girl and a whelping box is much needed! I build her a 4’4” x 3’ ft whelping box with pigrails included. I go over the list of tools and supplies you will need as well as the price for the materials. A lot of the items I already had on hand but most things you are able to source or find for free! To start, you first need safety glasses. When handling power tools it is always important to keep safety your top priority. When working with would and a saw you can have particles fling into your eye and do serious damage so work with care. Next on the list are gloves, , corner braces, .75 in screws so that it does not penetrate the wood and hurt your puppies, optional is wood glue, measuring tape, optional sand paper, the dog ear picket fence boards (3 - 7in and 1 - 5.5in), power drill or screwdriver and the handsaw or you can cut the boards at home depot. Just make sure to have your measurements ready. You will simply make the cuts, glue and nail the braces on the 4 corners and you have your box made. At the end I add pigrails using the leftover scrapes so that Misty, my rottweiler, will not smother her babies after birth. I get her used to and familiar with her whelping box and you are all done. If you want to add a plastic liner you can also buy a plastic table cloth from Walmart and cut it to your specific dimension.

    Hi, thanks so much for your video. I actually have a question about a whelping box for after they are about three weeks old. I didn't find your video in time of my puppy's birth, so we used a small child's swimming pool, but now they are crawling out. My question is--do I still need that underneath part for them? Is that still so that my dam does not accidentally role on them? (My name is Cherise; this is my husband's account).

      @LincolntheCaneCorso  2 года назад +1

      Hello Cherise! Thank you for watching! I kept the pig rails in until about around 4 weeks maybe sooner. Some people wait until they are about 5 weeks, others remove them around 3 weeks. As long as the puppies are strong enough to get out from under mom you don't need them. Yes the pig rails is to prevent mom from squishing her pups, sometimes they wiggle behind mom and mom leans back against the walls sometimes unaware she is suffocating them.

    The only problem is you don't have a floor and you have beautiful hardwood floors... I have the same go over to home depot or lowe's and get your 10 mil plastic Cause at some point, mama's gonna stop cleaning up their mess, And 10 mil plastic is the easiest to wipe and disinfect when the puppy pads or whatever you use, get soiled.

      My thoughts as well. I want to make this but will add a floor and cover it with floor vinyl for easy clean up. Boy oh boy can they get stinky lol 🎉

    My dig is an American bull dog and expecting at least 4 puppies is that size big enough or do l need to make a bigger one? Do you have a video on how to use it?

    • @LincolntheCaneCorso
      @LincolntheCaneCorso  2 года назад +1

      Hi Claire! This whelping box was just big enough for my girl and her 9 pups. although once they started walking it got pretty cramped. If you have the space I would make it bigger. I made it this size since it was the max I could fit in my living room. Also don't forget the pig rails, my girl almost squished her pups a couple times. I got my girl used to this box about a couple weeks before she had her puppies and it took a bit for her to get used to this box after she had them. I do have update video after she had her pups and me having to readjust some things to cover it a bit after the puppies birth, she kept trying to move the puppies under our couch because it was a darker and more enclosed space. every dog reacts different and will need to adjust based on their unique personality/reaction to motherhood. hope this helps and good luck on puppyhood!
