My first bike down here in Australia was a similar sort of bike, but made by Suzuki... a GSXR-400. Near identical performance, equally light. I believe 400cc is an insurance threshold in Japan? There seem to be some great 400cc sportsbikes from Japan down through the years.
I got one in January, it's an engineering piece of art. I'm currently restoring it because it was neglected, but as you said, the engine is bullet proof. I'm going completely OEM. Awesome video. Gear driven cams make that cool sound!
This is my dream bike. I could rave about it for years but the best thing, and the main reason for why I want this is because of the sound. Small displacement, V4, high revving, GEAR DRIVEN CAMS. Not to mention it's fantastic cornering abilities and fantastic reliability. Looks great with its single sided swing arm too. I'm saving up and I WILL own one.
I bought my first V4 Honda (VFR400R NC21) when it was near new in 1988. Now 30+ years (and many bikes) later I find myself back on a VFR400R (NC30). Its more than enough bike for most people and being a Honda from the 80-90 it'll last forever.
These bikes can be faster than some litre bikes in some short circuit race tracks. RUclips has plenty of videos showing that. You can see VFRs400 and RVFs 400 pursuing 600s and 750s no problem (except straights) , at tracks like Donington Park in UK.
@SDSSMotoChannel You my friend have totally missed the point.. New bikes r faster, lighter, more nimble n can turn insane track times.. All those electronic riding aids provide an insane safety net and makes new riders look like pros.. Riding an owning these beasts make you appreciate what technology has done to keep you safe.. Not just that, it also is a way for enthusiasts to get the chance to own the machine they desired to own growing up but didn't have the means to.. You have the right to your opinion but you should also know why some of these older bikes trade for astronomical amounts whereas the new generation ones constantly depreciate.. Just a word from one biker to another.. No beef intended 🤘🏼
@SDSSMotoChannel You're completely missing the point...It not about how well it performs, or having the best....its about how it makes you FEEL. There's a lot more to riding a motorcycle than just going fast.
Huge thank you to Justin from Adrenaline Cycle. I still cannot believe I got to ride this AMAZING motorcycle! Guys be sure to check out the coolest motorcycle shop in New England!! www.adrenalinecycleinc.com/2012/wordpress/
My first "sportbike" was a 93 Honda vfr750, i. Looked hard at these on the grey market, nothing like the gear driven V4's and single sided swingarms! A dream bike for sure!
They don’t have overwhelming power, but they are fast. Just not crazy stupid fast. But they do have superlative handling and really shine in the twisties. So if you think of it in that way they are fast bikes.
Awesome bikes. Late 80s, 90s and early 2000s were in my opinion the golden years of sports bikes, there was everything from little 50 cc (like Aprilia RS50, Cagiva Mito 50, Yamaha TZR50, etc.) to over 1000 cc (Suzuki GSXR1100, Honda Blackbird, Kawasaki ZX12R, Suzuki Hayabusa, etc.),everything from two strokes, to small displacement four cylinders, to big displacement four cylinders, to V-twins. It's cool to see Kawasaki returning small displacement four cylinders with ZX25R,hopefully there's a chance we'll see the return of two strokes too.
I used to have one of these amazing bikes, at the same time I owned an RC51. I loved the RC51 a lot but the RVF is the bike I usually chose to ride. 100's of miles of twisty roads at 90+ MPH is where this bike really excels.
So sick, i love these older small high revving bikes. We have an FZR400 in the shop i work at that just sits on top of the palette racks next to a RS125, so sweet to look at everyday
In fact it this vid has reminded me that I must buy an rvf 400 if i am lucky to find one at a decent price. v4 engine, gear driven cams, aluminium frame, single side swingarm and usd forks. Lovely.
Good for you! I already tried the RVF400 and the 750 quite some time ago, and that is the time I understood why they are valued HIGH. You can race it with your liter buddies and overtake them dudes, yet just cruise on a holiday, seaside at sunset and feel the old school vibe...great times...I wish I can go back to that time where it was all simple! But...I can never get one, unless I would be brave and import one from Japan myself, which is doable enough in my place.
In 1986 a friend bought a 1985 RVG 500 out of CANADA. I was 5'3 98lb and I wanted it!!! In 1990 went to CANADA to buy an 86,but it was trashed. Rode a RFV400 and loved it! It was like a baby RC30!! Came home with a 1989 YZR 500 and got my racing license at Road America. Never went back for it. When KAWI announced the new 400 I hoped it was like the mid/late 90s inline ZX-4 ... NOT a parallel twin like the new CBR250RR ended up. Oh well.... The sound/ feeling new and electric bikes are missing is called "mechanical". If ya think she sounds great.. try to find a RC45 !!!! AWSOM bike!! Stay safe!
i had one of these on my learners, they were restricted from factory (top speed). All you have to do is open up the speedo and there is a conductive plate that you need to cut off. Behind the speedo needle there is another on the back side of the speedo that follows the actual speedo needle and when it makes contact with a conductive plate (around 180kmh) it cuts the power. When you remove the pin on the backside you can keep winding out the bike past 220kmh
I had one for 2 years, one of the best bikes I owned, suited me with short legs. Had a short big bore Japanese muffler on it. Sounds so great. Played around with fork dampening but the front springs just too soft, I was only 80 kg at the time. Hard braking had it bottom out on rough surfaces. For a Honda it had sole. Brakes were the same as a CBR900RR from the 90s.
Bought my NC 30 after a crash and braking bones on my GSXR 750 f, IN 96, thought it a light stop gap till fully fit but loved it and had it 3.5 years till a kid in a car wiped it out... great bikes 400's and sadly cost a chunk of money these days for a good one, as two strokes have gone.
There is a slightly more accesible version of that bike, its the older NC30. The NC30 has a tall first gear and was before further power restrictions that the NC35 got. That one probably has HRC power mods to be making that kind of power. The NC30 doesn't have the air ducts like that, but it looks pretty similar otherwise, definitely sounds similar.
For pure sports riding a 250 2 stroke (rgv/kr1s/tzr) or a good 400 4cylinder (gsxr/rvf/zxr) are just the best. Handling, braking, and enough performance. The grin factor is just immense. I still miss my gsxr400 and my rgv.
I've always wanted one of these. single sided swingarm. v4. gear driven cams. and being a 400 easy to flick side to side all day. I wish Honda would bring back the gear driven cams v4 in an affordable sportbike
For those who wondering, "why the v4 sounds different from aprilia v4". Because this v4 uses 180° flat plane and screamer firing order, so that's why the engine really do sounds screaming. Not deep rumbling sounds from v4 crossplane big bang firing order.
Holy CRIKEY!!! 59-61hp from a 399cc My Friends!!! Not only is that amazing, but this thing would LEAVE almost all other bikes in it's dust on a curvy road!!! I get goosebumps from hearing that lil V-4 rev to the moon along with the whine of that gearbox!!! :-)
The in-line four 400's cbr, zxr, fzr, gsxr and the 250 2strokes nsr,rgv,tzr,kr1s were all great bikes but rvf 400 was the most special and rare back in the 90's.
The NC35 was my first "BIG BIKE" back in 1998 (UK) when I passed my test. I loved it, 18 months later I sold it and upgraded to a Kawasaki Zx6R Ninja (F1) There was something wonderful about that little V4 Honda :-)
I had a shoelace loop over the shift lever on a harley with forward controls. If by chance you picked that foot to put down first at a stop you're going down. After that I never wore laces on a bike.
Nice sound at 9:30. I used to remember when my England relatives would send us some England newspapers and there were motorcycles for sale in the classifieds. Tons of 400 sportbike in there.
A great bike, that for hard/fast riding needs a new rising rate linkage to lift up the rear end a bit, ..that gear driven cam whine, those solid shake-free mirrors, ..a real baby RVF/RC45 except for the fake inlet ducts ..I believe they are, for RC45 family styling - if so, their might be a HRC or similar kit to make them functional.
I've owned one of these. Sold it a couple of years ago in mint condition with less than 12K miles on it. One of the best handling motorcycles bar none. Even better than my Aprilia RS250 at the track. No where near as fast though. Built during the Honda golden years! Only problem owning one of these things now is parts availability. CV Carbs with rubber diaphragms. Get a tear or they perish...good luck with that one.
Awesome vid Hero! Can't wait to see more with Justin. You are a true motorcycle enthusiast. Stop with the disclaimers; it isn't necessary. I agree on all points, especially the sound/look. How would you compare the ride/ergos as compared to your CBR600? The rider triangle appears less angled forward. Thanks again for a great vid.
I just came across this video. I know what you mean, with your comments about that baby RVF. Nothing sounds as good as those gear driven v-fours! I'm currently searching for a good example, like the one you rode in this video. Awesome little bikes!
Great ride 👍. If you ride with laces, take the loose ends and wrap them around then through the loops, then tuck the two loose ends under the criss-cross laces on the side away from the controls. If you know what I mean? They won't catch anything.
My NC27 CB-1 is a similar beast. Gear driven cams, straight four, naked sports bike before there was such a thing. It would be interesting to see which is the best on the road. I’m also planning to build a CB-1 CBR400 hybrid naked bike. CBR400 alloy frame and larger tank and forks, best bits from both engines, and something else that I’m not sharing here.
I rode one back in 2004. Was really fantastic, torquey and handled well also. I owned the RGV back in 2003 as well. Asia had all the small bike coolness. Try a CBR250RR or the like ( 19k redline!!!) The power is not much but the sound is nuts. :)
It may only be a 400 but the rvf was a premium, top of the line, flagship bike back in 90's japan, a honda built it as such and thanks to self imposed power caps, licensing catagories, 400s were the most popular and whats the point of buying anything bigger when thanks to speed limiters you're stuck below 112mph.
They're so good I have one, here in Aus they are very sought after for learner's because of power to weight restrictions we cant get a 1000 as a first bike but the RVF 400 is learner legal and it's awesome
The 5th Generation VFR800 (1998 - 2001) is the "accessible" Honda V4 that has pretty close to the same features as the RVF400: It has the V4, it has the gear-driven camshafts, it has the single-sided swingarm. Where I believe the 5th Generation VFR800 beats the RVF400: the 5th Gen's V4 has a 180 degree crankshaft (instead of the 360 degree crank in the RVF) which gives the exhaust a nice burble (sounds like a little Ferrari), the 5th Gen has Honda PGM Fuel Injection (instead of carbs like the RVF), and because it has 781cc of displacement the 5th Gen has more torque. Yeah, the 5th Gen isn't as rare and exotic as the RVF, but I think that's also an advantage because you don't feel like you have to preserve/protect the bike, you can just ride.
VFR800 is nowhere near as sexy. It’s not a race bike. It’s a dad’s bike. Silly comparison. 360 big bang firing order was intended for serious race track use with a functional benefit in terms of race lap times. Stack it against the RC45 not the 400 if you want to understand the value differences between the two bikes.
Man, you are one lucky guy. I haven't been able to ride some thing for the past couple of months since ive been building my VF1000F. Can't wait to get back out. I hope my V4 sounds as good as that tho!
It was! Not a single piece out of place. Fantastic example! Justin from Adrenaline has the CLEANEST and COOLEST bikes ever. Seriously, I love his shop I could spend all day drooling over his bikes.
Thank you for the video make videos like this riding on different roads . It's looks so cool. In my country people and animals jumps out of nowhere. And people not even uses indicators when they are changing lanes and on turning points .
Just wanna say you still do fantastic jobs on your vids! I have had to slow down a bit on youtube because of school! Hope to catch up on them very soon
Badass bike but come on man GET ON IT! Atleast once, then you’ll really feel the power and hear that motor sing. Next time u ride one of these classics take it to the redline a couple times, it isn’t crazy fast or anything im sure you can handle it.
I have had one for a year or so, and needed something to play with after a long time riding the V-max.. This thing is made beautifully and without the limiter goes 210 km/h..so what do you need more? cornering feels very good and invites for max.lean too! braking hard is easy and ..yes a real fun to ride. mine was lost after.. 'I did not see you' ..but if you have one, you wont let it go and enjoy the craftsmanship till up the finer details every time its in the sun!
That's an amazing sounding bike 🏍 Those V4's sound even better when you open the exhaust and rejet. This guy Gary I met through some of my riding buddies has the Magna 500 and it sounds ridiculous. I went on a search for one just cause I love the sound and it's soo different
I miss my VFR400 ... a mate of mine rode it and his response "I dont understand why anyone would want to ride a bike like this" English sense of humour :-)
I had a VF400F when I was 17.. loved that bike! Also had a Kawasaki 250 KR-1 and Suzuki 250P, awesome bikes... would love an NC30 or another stroker.. Bikes you can ride hard without going to prison! Lol
Got a VFR400 NC30 UK SPEC all genuine but you need to rev it between 10k all up yo 14k rpm to get to the power band. Handling of these bikes is superb!
Although rare now in Europe at least finding one for sale, you can still pick the odd RVF400 up for around $5-6K (av.) maybe up to $7K here [EU] when you see them. Having said that, I saw a '98 RVF750 RC45 with a price tag of £33K/$42K USD - a bit high. Then again, when it comes to rare bikes you can put on any price I guess.
Great vid. Very enjoyable watching. Apart from the heavenly sound of the bike, I absolutely love the song that this clip finishes with. What is it/ who sings it?
Love this bike. Love the sound, the handling. I just wanna ask if the thermostat on the bike you're riding on is working. Cos i noticed that it isn't going up. Really nice specimen of a bike btw.
Awesome ride out in the country and great video, love the sound of that bike... I bought the VFR400 NC30 1992 (V4) in November 2019, the bike was totally abused. Rode it for about 5 days and then the engine gave up and blew a piston (so much else was wrong with her) but yeah, long story and I'll leave it at that. Well, the good news is that I am almost finished re-building the engine, unfortunately took much longer due to lockdowns and getting parts shipped. New piston, new rings all round, crank bearings (big ends) installing the heads and giving it a tune up this weekend (May 16 / 2020) so, I am looking forward to hitting the road in the next couple of days after nearly 6 months of looking at my bike completely stripped down to every part. Have you managed to purchase one yet or whats your plans on getting one?
RVF 400 was my first bike. A truly beautiful bike....mini RC45❤️
My first bike down here in Australia was a similar sort of bike, but made by Suzuki... a GSXR-400. Near identical performance, equally light. I believe 400cc is an insurance threshold in Japan? There seem to be some great 400cc sportsbikes from Japan down through the years.
Mine too. Miss it
@@ivanjulian2532 I think at that time, the 400s and 250 2-strokes were the fastest bikes permitted for road use in Japan
mine too (second bike while on my L's) loved that thing
My first 4 stroke :) Was a great bike, gave a lot of confidence.
As I currently have 3 RVF400's I can safely concur with the OP's comments. They are very addictive & truly the cream of the crop.
Are you in the U.S., and willing to sell one?
I got one in January, it's an engineering piece of art.
I'm currently restoring it because it was neglected, but as you said, the engine is bullet proof. I'm going completely OEM.
Awesome video. Gear driven cams make that cool sound!

Got one for sale.
Did you get one?
4 years is long enough. Update us.
Honda used to be so good with their sport bikes. I hope they make a come back. Their new liter bike looks promising.
I bought my first V4 Honda (VFR400R NC21) when it was near new in 1988. Now 30+ years (and many bikes) later I find myself back on a VFR400R (NC30). Its more than enough bike for most people and being a Honda from the 80-90 it'll last forever.
Nononono, stop driving the value of these things up, I haven't bought one yet!
When you realize the 400's cost the same as the 750's to manufacture, and the prices the 750's are fetching. They are cheap!
@SDSSMotoChannel - This isn't the dick-measuring thread you're looking for.

Justin has some brilliant bikes the rvf/vfr400s must rate as one of the best bikes ever made, love my 1989 nc30
Would love to see more history videos about vintage and retro sport bikes, like the legend of the Yamaha R7 video. I love that kind of stuff.
these are absolute gems. i really hope they dont get to much more attention before i buy one

Huge thank you to Justin from Adrenaline Cycle. I still cannot believe I got to ride this AMAZING motorcycle! Guys be sure to check out the coolest motorcycle shop in New England!! www.adrenalinecycleinc.com/2012/wordpress/
I have a 50cc supermoto but one day when im older i will but a ktm Duke II lc4 ( my dad owns one)
Dude you should make a video on KTM RC8 too
I just loved that bike
how is the mic setup is it inside your helmet? really picking up the exhaust sound without the wind noise
I think...someone will be buying that soon enough. And we know who!
i love it when the bike is doing the talk even if its 25 minutes long.
Right! I didn't wanna ruin it with my voice. God damn I watched my own video like 30 times just because I love that sound.
90's sport bikes are beautiful, and you've got two legends there.
My first "sportbike" was a 93 Honda vfr750, i. Looked hard at these on the grey market, nothing like the gear driven V4's and single sided swingarms! A dream bike for sure!
My first ever bike was an RGV250M. Loved that little 2 stroke, such a wicked powerband.
Don’t care if it’s not as fast as a liter bike. Just the sound alone makes it awesome !
PlebzOr Blapparapp yea
Honda hornet 250 / cbr250rr .. F1 sounds on a 250bike 🤣
They don’t have overwhelming power, but they are fast. Just not crazy stupid fast. But they do have superlative handling and really shine in the twisties. So if you think of it in that way they are fast bikes.

The pleasure was all mine! Thanks for watching! Truly a dream come true for me!
this was so cool. I've been drooling over this bike ever since I found out what it was.
Very pretty bike. I've had many bikes ranging from nc23's right throught to fireblades and r1's but those little 90's pocket rockets were ace.
In fact it this vid has reminded me that I must buy an rvf 400 if i am lucky to find one at a decent price. v4 engine, gear driven cams, aluminium frame, single side swingarm and usd forks. Lovely.
Welcome to the 400 V4 club. My 1987 NC24 makes me smile every time I go for a rideout.
I had an 87 nc24 in Rothmans livery and regret selling it.

My first ever road bike nc30 in 2004 the sound is amazing and nostalgic for me. Beautiful bikes.
I have all the work done on my bike at Adrenaline Cycle. Justin is a awesome dude
They sound amazing, I owned one for a few years but the handling is so so good.
What a beautiful scenic area to ride beautiful motorcycles in.
I've owned both these bikes in the past.... RVF is great but that RGV is always going to be my favorite.

What a awesome bike. Tried to get one for years
Ive owned my RVF for 10 years, my favorite bike I have ever owned.
Whereabouts are you?
Had a '75 CB400F. The bike you road weighs just about the same but has more than 2x the rear wheel HP. Must have been fun. Sounded awesome.
David , that would be "bike you rode", and CB400F's are slow. But they are worth serious money.

Funny, I've got an mc22 as an investment and looking for an nc35 soon. Prices only going one way 😄
A great bike, that for hard/fast riding needs a new rising rate linkage to lift up the rear end a bit, ..that gear driven cam whine, those solid shake-free mirrors, ..a real baby RVF/RC45 except for the fake inlet ducts ..I believe they are, for RC45 family styling - if so, their might be a HRC or similar kit to make them functional.
Georgeous bike. Would love one in my garage....or better: living room.
Welcome V4 world!
Beautiful road, beautiful country!
The sound so amazing, it's like it's supercharged!
I just came across this video. I know what you mean, with your comments about that baby RVF. Nothing sounds as good as those gear driven v-fours! I'm currently searching for a good example, like the one you rode in this video. Awesome little bikes!
Got one for sale if you still want to buy.
I'd love a modern 400/4. Wish honda would do it again. swear it sounds like a 2stroke at times very nice engine.
No thankyou that makes two of us. I am sure the bean counters in the accounting department would give the thumbs down. Shame
They're so good I have one, here in Aus they are very sought after for learner's because of power to weight restrictions we cant get a 1000 as a first bike but the RVF 400 is learner legal and it's awesome
Got one for sale.
@@andreasholmqvist9726 where abouts are you located? Got any more info?
11:55 good for you! Always ride your own ride! Cool video, and I could tell you were enjoying this amazing machine!
Always wanted a rfv !! Awesome bike. And big brother NC 45.
I have 48 kw kawasaki zxr 400 (Year model 1992) with yoshimura exhaust as my A2 bike. It is limited to 25 kw on paper ^^
I'm sure the mic doesn't do it full justice, but that little V4 does sound amazing! Awesome little bike...I kinda want one, lol
Man, you are one lucky guy. I haven't been able to ride some thing for the past couple of months since ive been building my VF1000F. Can't wait to get back out. I hope my V4 sounds as good as that tho!
Thanks. Good luck on your project! You’ll be riding soon i hope :)
Love these grey market bikes. Very cool you got to ride one and ride behind a 2 stroke.
this thing sounds sooo incredibly clean and smooth
It was! Not a single piece out of place. Fantastic example! Justin from Adrenaline has the CLEANEST and COOLEST bikes ever. Seriously, I love his shop I could spend all day drooling over his bikes.
@@HeroRR i couldnt afford to look too much into this... sounds too addictive😂
23:07 Plymouth Prowler! Don't see one of those every day.
Your best video so far. Great bike
Badass bike but come on man GET ON IT! Atleast once, then you’ll really feel the power and hear that motor sing. Next time u ride one of these classics take it to the redline a couple times, it isn’t crazy fast or anything im sure you can handle it.
Exactly my thinking, i've just bought one and yes it sounds great at 7k rpm, but take her up top, then it sings
I still in love for the RG250 vj22...
That thing is awesome, seems like it has the perfect amount of power.
That's an amazing sounding bike
🏍
Those V4's sound even better when you open the exhaust and rejet. This guy Gary I met through some of my riding buddies has the Magna 500 and it sounds ridiculous. I went on a search for one just cause I love the sound and it's soo different
And now imagine driving the real thing. The 750ccm RC45!!! 🤩😍🤩😍
I miss my VFR400 ... a mate of mine rode it and his response "I dont understand why anyone would want to ride a bike like this" English sense of humour :-)
Nice bike for sure. Sounds amazing
YES MTHRFKER YES. I had one of these bad boys too.
Now you've got to come to aus and ride my mc22 k? Good plan.
There are thousands of these in England ,known as the NC30 ,honda made it's big brother the RC30 and Suzuki made the RGV 250 in Pepsi colours
Do you still have it?
@@RetroSuperbikes I do have it, yes. Will make a video for RUclips one day maybe, how knows.
@@jcarvalho1500 Are you in the UK?
@@RetroSuperbikes bike is not in UK. It has never been, since 1991.
@@jcarvalho1500 Ah ok, maybe keep an eye on my videos as I am organising a massive nc30 and 35 meet soon in the UK
Nice review, sir. And your chuckle makes it better!
Also 1:03 is what I'm making my blue mc22 look like, I'll send you video and pics on Facebook when it's finished
Hero RR i just subscribed, enjoyed watching some of your videos in the past. That used to be my RVF. I got a few more of them for sale.
DAMN MAN!!...JUST THE SOUND OF THE DOWNSHIFTS IS...THE SOMERHING ELSE TRULLY!!...😏😏😏🫡🫡🫡😳😳😳😳😱😱😱😱😱😱😈😈
Amazing bikes, i own a vfr400r nc30. So so so crisp 👌🏼, should put some update videos on my guy
Is your vfr running now?
