It’s crazy. I just practiced this nonstop for about two hours while I was watching a movie and by the time it was over I could do it. I can’t explain it. Cards are cool and weird man. The more you hold them and touch them the more they start to do things for you. Strange and magical little pieces of paper.

VirtualWoodshed this is such a weird paragraph. Part of me wants to say “what the heck, yes that’s how practicing anything works, no duh” but since I’ve actually been practicing cardistry I understand what you mean. It’s like, your fingers are used to moving a certain way and because the cards don’t change too much your hands just learn how to move with the cards. It’s so obvious from a scientific point of view but when it’s actually happening to you it’s an amazing thing that words can’t capture entirely.

I've been searching for a tutorial that explain the card fan in great detail, but I still have t come across one that helps me overcome my issue.. When I spread the cards, the first half is perfect, but the second half I can never get to spread properly.. What am I doing wrong?

You can create more space for the cards by starting with curled fingers and extending them as you spread the fan, and also you can adjust the pressure of the fanning to create a tighter fan (so less of each card is showing) and that will give more room for the final cards.

Just a little pointer referring to when you talked about the gap, and said that you may have some grease on them. You more than likely do have grease or hand sweat if it's a very used deck of cards. A little tip I've picked up along the way. If you'd like to keep using your used deck, can't buy a new deck, or whatever the reason may be. Take the cards and spread them out on a table and sprinkle baby powder on them, on both sides. You don't need a ton, not cups of powder! Just a sprinkling! Then just shake them a little, shuffle them a few times and you can get more use out of that deck, and they won't be as sticky ,especially if that is your practice deck. I don't know how this would affect an expensive deck of cards, so I'm not recommending that , but for a cheap generic set of "practice" cards that you're learning with, this will give them some more life and make them less tacky to use. Hope this helps
