"The power of a weapon, any weapon, comes from the heart, but only when moulded by the mind." - Kratos to Atreus. This is the same thing he ends up doing. The sentient foul blades that once brought destruction of life are now being used to preserve a life that Kratos loves more than anything else in the world. The Blades of Chaos are now redeemed with their wielder, and fit to be called "a family heirloom." The story of Kratos teaches us that even if your past is filled with contradictions and wrong steps, it is never too late to reinvent yourself.
Agreed on everything but one thing, I don't think Kratos is letting Atreus use the blades of chaos as long as they live. The blades may have helped save Atreus's life, but I don't think Kratos believes it's something he wants anywhere near his son's hands. I think he sees it as a necessity, a blood thirsty weapon meant for blood soaked hands.
I love the way they handled the Blades return in this game. Instead of treating this like a triumphant moment, they treat it as it is. A tragedy. Kratos getting the Blades of Chaos back isn't a good thing. These blades were the cause of so much pain and regret within Kratos' life. They were the blades he used to kill his family, his father, and likely millions of other innocents. In the game's official novelization, it says "The shrill screams of those he had killed flooded every corner of his mind". This is a moment of pure pain and anguish. But, within that anguish there is hope. The hope to save his son. These blades now have a new purpose. Instead of being used to destroy and kill, they will now be used to help those in need. There is so much packed into this one scene, it's insane.
He swore never to use the foul things again, but when desperate times come, sometimes it is the only choice. Bearing the chains and the Blades again, he now wishes to make peace with them - not to be reminded of the bloodshed he once committed as a servant to Ares, but to be better.
"The Blades of Chaos. Forged in the fowless depths of Hades. Once attached the chains remained so, chained and seared to the flesh, a part of the bearer's body. A permanent reminder of Kratos's pledge. In return, ultimate power."
Something cool I noticed about this scene; throughout the game, we have seen Kratos routinely perform feats of superhuman strength, such as ripping up boulders and pushing down the hammer. And yet, he has to physically struggle to put the Blades back on, a testament to how much weight they carry.
It's not so much the Blades themselves weigh a ton - it's the _pain_ and the _guilt_ he has putting them back on his wrists. They were his burden as a slave to Ares, a merciless killer as a God of War and the tools used to end the Greek Pantheon. He hesitates putting them on again because they were a curse laid upon him. Now he must make peace with them in order to save his son.
This one set of scenes, man, just... way to just nail it. What a fucking SCENE. "There is nowhere you can hide, Spartan. Put as much distance between you and the truth. Pretend to be everything you are not... husband. Teacher... FATHER... but there is one unavoidable truth. You cannot change. You will always be... a monster..." "I know... but I am your monster no longer." WHAT A SCENE, man. No matter how many times I replay, that alone gives me a chill down my spine whenever I play the game again.
