Nursing exam or NCLEX style questions that you could see related to a calcium imbalance:
All of the following except one are true about Trosseau’s sign:
A. It is a sign of hypercalcemia.
B. It can be elicited by inflating a blood pressure cuff on the upper arm to about 20 mm Hg above systolic pressure.
C. It is describes as an adducted thumb, flexed wrist and metacarpophalangeal joints, extended interphalangeal joints with fingers together.
D. None of the above
Ans.: A. Trosseau’s sign can occur with hypocalcemia or hypomagnesemia.
The nurse receives the laboratory result of the client who had just undergone thyroidectomy and she notes that the serum calcium levels are at 5 mg/dL. Which of the following signs and symptoms should she expect? Select all that apply:
A. Shortened QT interval on ECG
B. Hypoactive deep tendon reflexes
C. Seizures
D. Lengthened ST on ECG

Ans.: C, D, F can be expected in clients with hypocalcelmia . A, B, E can be seen in hypercalcemia.

Thanks for these great F+E videos! One question-in nursing school, the professors don't really talk much about interpreting ECG's...But in real-life nursing, are nurses expected to know how to read ECG's?
