+Mye Westbrooks Oh wow! Thank you so much for your kind words, Mye! I appreciate it so much! I wanted to simplify it as much as I could because I know how grueling it is to study this material along with other content. I'm so excited I could help you learn. I wish you the best on your exam and studies :)

Thank you so much Sarah. I am first semester nursing student and I have a F&E exam monday. I do not feel that prepared because our instructors teaching method is a bit different than what I am used to, but watching this video made me hopeful & I understood hyponatremia. I can't wait to watch the others. You are currently my savior!

I looked this up because I have/had this. I changed my diet from the 'SAD' diet (Standard American Diet) to a 100% pure fruit and vegetable diet. Some nuts, seeds, beans, but mostly fresh and lightly cooked vegetables and fresh fruit. I estimate I went from 4000 mg of Na per day to less than 500 mg of Na per day...in one day. For about 5 or 6 days I urinated gallons of of fluid a day. It was insane, I lost about 2 pounds a day for the first week. I thought I was being brave and committed. Then, about a week into my extreme diet change I developed "acute abdomen". Upper stomach pain (epigastric) was so bad that everyday I thought about going to the Emergency Department. I literally thought I was going to die many times. The pain in my abdomen was indescribable. Worse than a kidney stone. Here's where it gets really complicated: the day before I changed my diet I had a major heart attack. An "anterior" also known as a STEMI, the "widow maker", the worst possible kind. All my doctors were convinced that my abdominal pain was coming from the anticoagulant drugs I was now taking (I had 2 stents placed). But all the gastric medications to treat the known side effects of this class of drug had no benefit or effect. About day 14 or so at 11:00PM I was getting ready to go the the hospital ED when I paused and figured I'd try one thing: drink a ton of water. Within 10-15 minutes the severe cramping in my abdomen calmed down enough for me to think I did not need to go. Then, I thought about dehydration, which led me to hyponatremia. I started drinking a ton of water and had a clear soup with an insane amount of salt in it...1600 mg per serving. I was probably getting 300 mg each 24 hours before that. I kept drinking water but also consuming small, controlled amounts of salt. I probably should have still gone to the ED but I got lucky and found the right formula at home. I also have a friend who is a top M.D. that specializes in nutritional medicine who helped me. I can not understate how bad the abdominal pain was. Worse, or as bad as, the heart attack pain a few weeks earlier. I has been 3 days and I have taken all the heart medications and had no reaction or exacerbation of abdominal pain, I am now slowly reducing the amount of sodium in my diet. That's the key, the body can adjust to lower sodium levels (thats how diet lowers blood pressure), but trust me, you can't go from 100% to 0% in one day. My doctor friend has me on a set amount of fluid intake (2 quarts per day) and about 800 mg of sodium, decreasing in small increments over 6-8 weeks. Consider my story hopefully a useful case history. The sad part is I am educated...like, very well educated...I have a B.S. and an MS (in human nutrition) a doctorate in Physical Therapy and I am a D.C.! I have changed my diet from terrible to super good and back many times and never had a problem...but never to the extreme I did this time because of the heart attack. As long as the abdominal pain does not return I will live happy and healthy and feel well and take really good care of myself. Best to all.

This is interesting watching is a patient who recently went to the hospital with hyponatremia. I had crazy low levels as low as 121 at urgent care! (I went to urgent care first and then I was referred to the emergency room). It's a serious condition so I learned I have to take care of my water consumption and have much better control over my electrolyte balance. 3 days ago I had no idea this was even a thing! I wish there was more awareness out there because I didn't have any education on this and I drank way too much water. I'm also on desmopressin and sertraline which also play a huge part in it. I had to learn so much in the past couple days so this never happens to me again. Incoming nurses and doctors here: take notes! This condition is dangerous! And spread awareness!
