I'm using linux and was having this issue. I found out you have to set up your path for where to save config files in the mame.ini file. Go to "# CORE OUTPUT DIRECTORY OPTIONS" Then set a path for the "cfg_directory"
For Wii retroarch: Can someone help with a retroarch Classic Controller issue? - I have installed several versions and while the classic controller functions on the main retroarch menu, I cannot remap the controller nor does it function when a rom is launched. If I attempt to remap, some buttons display numbers etc, others don’t seem to function at all in controller config. Alternatively, if someone has a classic controller config files and is willing to share it, that would be amazing. Several forums indicate that others are having issues, but I cannot find a clear answer, nor video about this retroarch/ user issue.
You only need the keyboard to set up the controls on your controller. Once they are set up, you don’t need it again unless you want to change the controller layout.

leamsi2099 maybe. If you’re in mame 2003 in retropie, you may be able to delete the following file. home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/cfg/default.cfg If you’re in a different mame, the file path may be different.

Any idea how to set up player 3 and 4 on 4player mame roms?(TMNT, simpsons, XMEN). i have a standup 4player arcade but none of the 4 player arcade roms will recognize player 3 and 4 properly. Appreciate any input.

I'm very confused. I see videos where you can configure in emulation station, but also see videos where you configure like you are showing here for controllers. I started to configure my controller in the UI, and only changed the"up" one to my controller, and it screwed up all my buttons and joystick's. When I configure it in emulation station, the menus work with the controller, but as soon as I go into a game, the controller's are useless! I'm lost :(
Emulation Station only controls the menus and the regular emulators for console games. The way this video shows you is how to set them up in MAME. they are two separate control systems. Both will need set up separately.

Tech Masters In mame like you did here. I went into user input, and when you hit enter, the old input disappears and then you put in a new one. Any way you can add to the existing input if you enter another?
Depending on the version of MAME, you can have two buttons perform the same function, but I'm not sure why you would want to. I have to admit that I'm not following what you want to do exactly. Is MAME holding your control settings? If it is, what exactly are you trying to do with your controls? Is Emulation Station not holding the settings that you put in it?
Hello, I have a little funny question I have not finished arcade cabinet + minipac or keyboard encoder and if I set the buttons everything is ok but if I come back to play in time I need to set the so-called buttons again I set e.g. kbd 1 W, A, S, D pare days later i had kbd 2.3 and today i have kbd8. It irritates a bit that I have to set the buttons every now and again because the kbd (i.e. the keyboard) changes what it depends on and whether it can be assigned rigidly, I have 1 normal keyboard, 1x ipac and one mini bluetooth keyboard which is used only in the evening if I want to change the movie etc. Mame ver.185 but it doesn't matter on every version it's the same . I hope I explained ;)

Delete default.cfg if tab doesn't work depending on ver mame2003... home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2000/cfg/ or /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2000/cfg/ (or equivalent, I don't run MAME2000, depending where you are running them from) and delete the default.cfg file. This should be regenerated to stock when you launch another ROM.
I'm on MAME 0.225 and these options don'r seem to exist anymore. Like, at all. No control mapping, just choosing which device works with which input type (like pedals, lightgun etc). Obviously this makes most games unplayable on joypad as the buttons are on opposite sides of the pad. Anyone know the last version of MAME that had this old input style?
What would cause the game to operate at like twice or three times speed? I think I may have inadvertently changed some setting. Is there a way I can reset MAME without having to spoke the whole RetroPie setup?
I cant go fullscreen. When I start a game it shows options and "story" for the game and it takes half the screen! What to do!? I can play the game but with half the screen only.

you need to load a game up first. it is either tab or one of the f keys. you can also configure the controls in the mame settings. emulationrealm.net/downloads/file/1632-mame-plus-ui-(64bit) to play people online you need this one. gui means windows interface. the other one is windows dos interface. for easier use download the one that says gui.

Plug in the joypad that you want to use for J1 and then go through the process in this video of setting the buttons for it. Once they are all set, set your other controller as J2. Either controller can be set as either 1 or 2.

What do you do when you have an image created by someone else and TAB on the keyboard will not enter that requestor that says Input (general). I can't remember where that's stored. I wanted to do this because this guy is a big-time youtuber and he really knows his stuff, but for some reason he has locked that out. I was going to write down all of his controller choices to get a better understanding of what his choices were. Also, where are those choices saved - what file? That way I could just SSH in and copy and paste out of the file and not have to write down everything long hand. So to repeat - the file conaining the TAB lockout and the file having all the 'Input (general)' choices.
PS I re-flashed the image and TAB still won't work. I had changed the keyboard to 104 US and I thought well maybe that's why. Anyway, I googled and apparently you need to delete config.txt in CFG, so I'm just going to pass on this.
Update: I have an A/B switch on my Pi 3b, so I shut down, powered off, threw the switch and launched another image and again on the 88 Games, the TAB wouldn't work, but I noticed when launching that rectangle and it said fbalpha and I said That's it!!!. TAB doesn't work with an fba core. See, the other image never showed that rectangle even though runcommand is enabled. So, in this image I went down to a MAME game and the TAB worked. I went back to the other image and this guy has everything running off an fba core even for what I thought were mame games. I know because even though the rectangle doesn't appear, you can still hit a button and see what core is being used. What threw me off is because I watched videos of this guy building and fine tuning this image and tons of the games were mame. Not only that, but he threw everything in the arcade folder when I would have put them in fba. Perhaps he did that in case he wanted to use a mame core which is do-able when they're in the arcade folder. This image is evidently not the one he was working on in all those 'build' videos. So I learned some things :)

Do you need to use a keyboard or can you operate mame and play games with a controller only?

Delete default.cfg if tab doesn't work depending on ver mame2003...
home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2000/cfg/ or /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2000/cfg/ (or equivalent, I don't run MAME2000, depending where you are running them from) and delete the default.cfg file. This should be regenerated to stock when you launch another ROM.

I'm on MAME 0.225 and these options don'r seem to exist anymore. Like, at all. No control mapping, just choosing which device works with which input type (like pedals, lightgun etc). Obviously this makes most games unplayable on joypad as the buttons are on opposite sides of the pad. Anyone know the last version of MAME that had this old input style?

What would cause the game to operate at like twice or three times speed? I think I may have inadvertently changed some setting. Is there a way I can reset MAME without having to spoke the whole RetroPie setup?
I cant go fullscreen. When I start a game it shows options and "story" for the game and it takes half the screen! What to do!? I can play the game but with half the screen only.

You can set them up for all games, or for each game individually.
On the menu it automatically scrolls at high speed through the options as if someone is holding down the down button. Any advice on how to make that stop?
Cant map any ui input from any controller I plug in. They all work perfectly fine outside of mame. When I push enter to map anything, no direction or button works. Help?
You have to use a keyboard to scroll through the menu at first until you setup the UI up and UI down settings to your controller.

I can't seem to get mine to appear I've pressed every button on joypad and also on keyboard but nothing!! Anywhere else I could get this to appear as some of my action button bring up volume, brightness settings and it's very frustrating. If anyone could help me resolve this that would be great
you need to load a game up first. it is either tab or one of the f keys. you can also configure the controls in the mame settings. emulationrealm.net/downloads/file/1632-mame-plus-ui-(64bit) to play people online you need this one. gui means windows interface. the other one is windows dos interface. for easier use download the one that says gui.

Try a different emulator....some won't support the commands.

Plug in the joypad that you want to use for J1 and then go through the process in this video of setting the buttons for it. Once they are all set, set your other controller as J2. Either controller can be set as either 1 or 2.

If you’re following the instructions, you might just have a bad retropie install. If you are programming the buttons in, and they are not working the controller may also be faulty or need adjustment of the retropie files ie: a xim-mo control card,
What do you do when you have an image created by someone else and TAB on the keyboard will not enter that requestor that says Input (general). I can't remember where that's stored. I wanted to do this because this guy is a big-time youtuber and he really knows his stuff, but for some reason he has locked that out. I was going to write down all of his controller choices to get a better understanding of what his choices were. Also, where are those choices saved - what file? That way I could just SSH in and copy and paste out of the file and not have to write down everything long hand. So to repeat - the file conaining the TAB lockout and the file having all the 'Input (general)' choices.
PS I re-flashed the image and TAB still won't work. I had changed the keyboard to 104 US and I thought well maybe that's why. Anyway, I googled and apparently you need to delete config.txt in CFG, so I'm just going to pass on this.
Update: I have an A/B switch on my Pi 3b, so I shut down, powered off, threw the switch and launched another image and again on the 88 Games, the TAB wouldn't work, but I noticed when launching that rectangle and it said fbalpha and I said That's it!!!. TAB doesn't work with an fba core. See, the other image never showed that rectangle even though runcommand is enabled. So, in this image I went down to a MAME game and the TAB worked. I went back to the other image and this guy has everything running off an fba core even for what I thought were mame games. I know because even though the rectangle doesn't appear, you can still hit a button and see what core is being used. What threw me off is because I watched videos of this guy building and fine tuning this image and tons of the games were mame. Not only that, but he threw everything in the arcade folder when I would have put them in fba. Perhaps he did that in case he wanted to use a mame core which is do-able when they're in the arcade folder. This image is evidently not the one he was working on in all those 'build' videos. So I learned some things :)
