Thumbs up for Animal Vegetable Mineral. Tip: never choose quartz it's too easy, I usually go for iron pyrite or selenium. Ha no one ever guesses selenium!
I'm American, my family's been American for at least two generations down every branch, and I was introduced to the game as "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral". So it's not exclusive to Quinn's family or the bloody English. Though the way it was taught to me, "mineral" was just anything that wasn't alive. (I remember being an obnoxious little elementary schooler and picking mushrooms, since they're alive but not plants _or_ animals!)
DSA is a game loved by everyone I've shown it to. Introduced my father in law to it last Christmas time and he told me he was awake till 4am that night trying to work out the best way to play it. I told him it's quite simple, you either play cautiously or as a dick.
My first Oink game was a Deep Sea Adventures. Me and my friends loved it and after that I started collecting them (10 so far). Some are so-so and others are brilliant. But what I love most about them are their portability. I’ve played them during train rides, at the pub and my friend’s summer cabin. They are easy to put in a pocket and you can often put several in a backpack or a suitcase.
“I f$@$ing HATE this game “ “Whoah, whoah, whoah! You can’t say THAT. Here, let me do it....” “...Quinn’s f$@$ing HATES this game.” I had to stop the video and laugh at that out loud. GOD that was perfect.
DSA and A Fake Artist... are both very popular for lunchtime game sessions. Watching someone weighed down with treasure scratching on the door of the submarine when they just can't... bloody... roll... more... than...a...bloody...two... is marvellous entertainment. Great summary- and I think that Startups will be my next purchase.
Deep Sea is definitely one of my favorites... I think partly because I like social experiments and it's fun seeing how backstabby and greedy my friends/family get... and it's such a perfect example of the phrase "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you". Seeing the look of sheer panic set in on peoples faces when someone close to the surface decides to pick up another piece of treasure just to use more air is really quite fun... I think something might be wrong with me.
I can already see the part 2: Scout, Dokojong, Troll, In A Grove, Fafnir, Moon Adventure, Mr. Face/This Face That Face, Hey Yo, Order Overload, and Quickity Pickity. Maybe even have Tiger & Dragon as a weird "This isn't juice box sized!" sort of thing.
This has to be my favorite video by SUSD so far, I keep coming back to rewatch it and still find my self chuckling at it more than I should after having watched it a dozen times.
Australian here and I call it "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral." But the category "mineral" was used for all non-living objects, so it was definitely our most common. Silver? Mineral. Uluru? Mineral. Traffic cone? You better believe that's a mineral.
Respectfully, hard disagree on your assessment of Deep Sea Adventure. It’s been a hit with every group that I’ve introduced it to. I’m especially surprised because Quinns likes Diamant/Incan Gold so much. Glad to see at least Matt bumped it up in the rankings in the end. Obviously I won’t change your mind if you don’t like it (that’s fine), but with how much fun I’ve had with it, it would be a pity if someone passed on it without trying it just because of this video.
After getting it because of this video for my five year old (looked like something they could deal with) in spite of their terrible review (without reading comments) I do wonder if they rated it so badly in order to get us to comment.. I can't see what there is to dislike.
Wait, do you guys actually remember to remove the circles after a round of Deep Sea Adventure? Because if not, it makes the game unnecessarily hard. At 16:09, there are 9 circles in play, in a two player game... Also, no WormMatt -1
16:56 I feel you Quinn. I enjoy DSA but I have never won a single game yet. It is exceedingly brutal but I think that's where it shines. One person in our group once won the game by getting a tier 4 treasure in Round 2 then grabbing as many treasures in round 3 so he could suffocate us all with the oxygen debt. No one had any treasures to keep at that point and although everyone drowned, he still won due to his higher valued treasure!
This review was great with the banter between Matt and Quinns. I laughed out loud several times and I feel very informed about the games. Awesome job guys.
Jon Purkis. The man, the myth, the legend. Matt, Quinn, and Purkis writing a skit together for a review similar to this would be amazing. Collaboration? :)
First off, DSA is better than it was presented IMO, but everyone can have different opinions on things. Secondly, the most satisfying thing about Oink Games is that when you clean them up you chuck everything in the box (with some things poking out), put on the lid partially and then gently shake the box while pressing lightly on both box halves to have the game reorganize itself within the box so the lid fits flush. You can't imagine the satisfaction before trying it, it's gorgeous.
This review-pack style was kinda great actually. Wouldn't mind more of this. That said, for anyone that's played these, can someone explain the appeal of Startups? I can't tell if this is just Quinn's peculiar tastes or if I missed something in the short overview but even after the explanation I don't quite get the appeal? (Speaking as someone who's played none of these and disagreed with Quinn's opinions on numerous occasions)
You have to invest somewhere, but the worst position to end up in is 2nd best. You'd prefer to be 1st or not in the fight at all. Add in some randomization, hidden information, and a bit of luck, and you have some nice tension in a breezy little game.
If you like the hidden roles and yes or no style of Insider, I can’t recommend Werewords enough! It’s essentially the same game, with bigger cards, more roles, a companion app that helps streamline thing, as well as tokens to help show previous answers! Like they say, it’s so much fun, and with the expanded number of roles, the tension and hilarity from close games is unbeatable as far as word games like this go in my books!
We seem to have lost our Deep Sea Adventure - though I was amazed with how effective it pulled in even the inexperienced into a great role play! Gasping for air, tugging each other to get back onboard! 😅
"I didn't win but I deserved to" is such an interesting feeling. It is okay to shrug it off once or twice and laugh with your friends. But if it keeps happening in the same game it can become frustrating. You start feeling that the game itself is designed to be either completely random or reward the people at the bottom to help them overcome the leader.
I too sit around the house like Quinns at the start of the video, just sat with me and my nice looking board games. Just enjoying them. Also, I love Fake Artist, got it for my recent holiday with friends. Only issue is one person having to sit out in low numbers as the "hint giver" but there are apps you can get that are alright! Also the game can quickly dissolve into everyone doing micro drawings, which basically makes it impossible as the Fake as you're not really able to add anything without being called out for failing to draw a micro Mona Lisa. It's great. I might get Start Up as it seems interesting, also Insider. These games look nice.
Awesome review, as always. It would be good to know exactly why you didn't like Deep Sea Adventures though. Just saying "it's not very good" doesn't explain why.
This review was hilarious, I've been looking at these games for months too so this was very helpful. Since they all have "this box is cute but wtf is it" syndrome. Definitely going to pick up startup and deep sea adventure.
Love Deep Sea Adventure. I haven't played them all, but of the few I have (including Startups) Deep Sea Adventure is my favourite. It's the only one I bought after playing it.
Visited Washington DC last year and my wife and I picked up Deep Sea Adventures and Startups at the recommendation of the gameshop staff. Highly recommended
I’ve watched this review several times now! Please do more short-form, rapid fire reviews! Your comedy stylings really shined in this along with your expertise!
Small rules error: In Flotsam Fight, the number of lifeboats you can play into is the number of players, not the number of players plus one. Second error: Flotsam Fight is way more fun than they make it sound! So is Deep Sea Adventure!
I may have to check out the other games. I've only ever played Deep Sea Adventure, which I really enjoy playing and has gone down well with others as well.
Deep Sea Adventure was the first one I got into and own as well, I've had Fake Artist on my radar for a long while. Glad to see it's so well rated by them.

You guys are hilarious. Nothing on RUclips makes me laugh as hard as your videos.
Thanks guys, i've gone cold turkey on games the last few year but i loved this video and you guys. i always loved the oink style -- yall got me with the first line about fake artist, i agree its incredible! I am gonna buy insider and startups and floatsum based on this video!
This one was a real gem. Thanks guys. How about reviewing some print-and-play games next? I've always wondered whether there are any that are actually worth going to the trouble of printing out.
Wow, I love this concise review of Oink Games, I've always been intrigued by their tiny size and art but never knew if they were good games or not. PLEASE YES more of these :D :D :D Can you do a part 2 with more Oink Games? e.g.Tricks and the Phantom, The Pyramid's Deadline, Kobayakawa, Dual Clash Poker, In a Grove, Mask Men, etc.. Looking forward to it!

I fucking LOVE Deep Sea Adventure. One of my favorites and probably my most-played because of how easy it is to get to the table, and anytime I introduce it it gets like 3 plays as people buy into the risk factor and theme of it.
I keep coming back to Moneybags and trying to fix it. 1. Remove the Diamond, add Platinum Coins - Adding Platinum Coins, with a different shape or thickness, would make for different audio and weight at a greater ratio than a mere lone Diamond. Alternatively? 2. Add More Gems - Rather than one Diamond worth Ten Points, have Six Gems (one for each player, mayhaps) worth Three Points each. Still light enough for deception, the sound of plastic gems clinking against one another would still be noticeable but not be so all-or-nothing.
Love this review and you make me truly want to try Startups and Insider too. It looks like great party-light games. So far, I have only played Nine Tiles Panic and me and my friends actually love it, because of its art and how you have to correct the town city in limited time. We found it is hilarious sometimes when either I or my friends can't make the things right. Thank you for your review and I really want to watch your other oink games more like Maskmen, Kobayakawa, etc.
😂OK honestly, this is one of my favorite videos you’ve done. also love SOME of the Onik games. favorite : Maskmen! Love: start up most Bang for your buck. : start up Want to play : insiders!! fake artist! honorable mention but only played it once : deep sea adventure Will play any time : nine tile panic! and Maskman
My playgroup loves games that encourage being asses to each other and Deep Sea Adventure is a favorite. We have games where no one scores at all and normally I don't care for that level of degeneracy design but when everyone is laughing then it passes the fun check.
Yes, please review more of these! Also I'd love to hear your opinion on player count. Are any of these particularly good for two players? Do any of them with a range of player counts not stand up well at the high or low end?
In our house, Deep Sea Adventure is called Rick Drowns Us All. This is because every time we play it Rick drowns us all.
Dan Roe in my group it’s called “don’t be a greedy bastard (or you’ll loose)”
Zakwasny, why “loose” and not “los?” Is it autocorrected or was something too tight?

I have seen every SUSD episode ever and this is my favorite episode of all time.
Wow, high praise! My favorite episode is probably still the Tash Kalar review.

Have to agree. Them not liking DSA (aka 'the drowning game') calls in to question everything else they say!
My coworkers loved it and so did my wife. Anybody I've introduced it to has loved it.
Deep Sea Adventure is a goddamned treasure. Fight me.
This man speaks the truth
I won't because I know holding onto that goddamned treasure is going to waste all of our oxygen so I'm going back to the sub.
I've loved it and I think everyone I've played it with has enjoyed it. So much fun in a tiny box.
Super game and works on many deep levels...
The fun part is seeing everybody die from greed.
