Quinns saying Blood on the Clocktower "isn't a great game" was a joke, everybody...
...or is it?
A hilarious joke, considering the salty comments from review reviewers on the review of that game. :D
Matt's chuckle following suit was a clear indication that Quinns was being sarcastic.
Can't believe viewers missed that. Jesus, what's wrong with you people.
Thought so after your glowing review of it, but wasn’t quite sure.
XD
So, here's a story about Diplomacy:
Back in law school, the law library had assigned study carrels for all students. But the number of carrels exceeded the number of students, so there were extra.
We set up a Diplomacy board in one of the vacant carrels, and we made one move per week, on Friday Afternoon. Everyone dropped their move slips into a cup Friday morning, and then we'd pull out the moves Friday afternoon. And then we'd spend the next week, in between classes, having clandestine meetings with each other and plotting to stab each other in the back.
I've played Diplomacy as a sit-around-the-table game, and...eh.
But doing the one-move-a-week game over the course of a school year? Amazeballs. The tension was fabulous, and it really made great use of the thing the game was built to do--make people meet with each other behind everyone else's back and lie to each other.
If you're looking to play Diplomacy with the interns, don't do it as a video. Do it as a running graphic on the website, with one move a week, made very, very slowly. That's my two cents.
Peter Jones That sounds fantastic, and it was probably good training for being a lawyer, so good use of the library after all.
@@c.w.2000 It was actually really amazing practice for negotiation/mediation training. Although we didn't really abide by the "Candor to the Tribunal" ethics rules that we do IRL.
We did similar in high school, although we made two moves a day, once at break and once at lunch. So not nearly as much conspiring time as your group, but still gave players the room to develop a strategy. Great times!
I mean, that also sounds awesome. The thing the publicly-displayed board did, though, was interesting. It really tied even people who weren't playing into the game. There were entire factions of my class running game on people to get them to move a certain way. You had about a hundred to a hundred and fifty people who derived significant amounts of entertainment from looking at that board and talking to each other, even if only seven of us were playing. That's what made me think of this when Quinn's said he wanted to work Diplomacy onto the site. The numbers of us that would be suggesting moves to people via comments would get pretty epic.
Diplomacy ..... tears will be shed.
Dead in the centre, the spookiest game of all...Scrabble.
I still have nightmares
Should easily be monopoly
Ah yes, the Four Genres: Ameritrash, Euro, Real Time, and Reiner Knizia.
Don’t forget my favorite category of games that are too large.
The four riders of the apocalypse
Thank you for typing that out, Even after 4 listens I had no idea what the final axis was XD;.
and of course the heart of darkness at the centre of it all
@@KerbalRocketry Scrabble.
I love how this intricate system features at least one game that shouldn't be in every section.
"Sometimes I don't even hang them around my neck!" It's a family show!
Not any longer.
What is wrong with him hanging them on his shoulders like a purse? O.o
@@Skarpo89 Oh, my sweet summer child.
Carful of those sharp corners now.
LoL
I just love reading RPG books and fantasize about the campaigns I could run instead of actually running them.
I'm in the same boat and honestly, I think like most things it's better that way. I'll just keep pretending that someday it will happen, I will die thinking that...
It's nice to know that I'm not alone... While I'm alone with all of my RPG books.
Yup, same thing! I own more RPG systems, let alone books, than I've played sessions. I am finally playing at the moment though...
I do the same. Then I once ran a game in one of my beautifully crafted settings, and the players basically ran amok torching every building with paragraphs of backstory, maiming and killing every character with carefully written and complex personalities. They did have a good time, but I was left traumatized.
I'm in this comment and I don't like it. I'm a newbie tho and afraid of discouraging my players.
Oh Quinns, there is something so charming about seeing you show off your collection with the enthusiasm of a child. This is something that many adults lose as they face the burdens of the world, but it is actually important for our mental health to keep that spark of playfulness alive. You and the SU&SD team bring good medicine to people all over the world, and I love you for it.
There is one game which combines plastic and wood perfectly and thats spirit island. Everything Wood = good for you. Everything plastik = bad for you.
Hard agree
ughhhhhhhhh. No. I like Spirit Island, but I *hate* that it combines wood and plastic. The Dahan are such nice little pieces of what I assume is wood (but could be plastic...) and the invaders are such cheap feeling nasty sharp little annoying bits of plastic that really should be made from a different colour of wood.
This was absolutely delightful! I'm looking forward to more of these exploration missions!
Quinns, after all your teasing on podcasts about games in your top 5 and 10, I'm so glad you made this. Thank you!
"I'm not sure about this axes system" is what literally everyone watching this thought, including our lovable camera operator.
Whoa Quinn’s... you run up AND down... that’s commitment.
"Let's get the interns together on a game of Diplomacy."
...and then we never saw the interns ever again.
Well, not alive anyways.
This is Cecil and we are sorry for your loss
Thanks for the infinity mention! It's such a great game, and I never get tired of seeing it on lists.
"I run so much! I run up and down..." super fun video guys! Always love your stuff
I've honestly love a stream by the guys where you just open boardgames, kind of summarize things and just tell us their thoughts. That's the 2nd best thing that boardgamers like to do with their friends anyway, after actually playing.
This managed to be the most on brand Quinns video presented in the most on brand Quinns way. And I love it.
You have an excellent channel. I am glad a mate sent me to your vids as a fan of board games with my fave as DUNE.
You guys are so good at this now, even when you are just arsing around in a room you manage to do everything so professionally. Good work!
Really glad to hear this will be a series with Matt coming next.
New camera, Matt?
As a keen board gamer and filmmaker, I've always been interested in what you shoot with as well was what you're shooting. Keep up the good work, guys.
I literally laughed/chuckled when I saw all the other lanyards. Keep up the great work guys. 😃👍
I know this is a year + old, but I LOVE this. Thanks for sharing. It's actually nice to get an overview of the games you really like and to get e a little bit of insight for some. Perhaps now might be a good time for an update of sorts. What did you guys add in the last year that you really love. Did any of your classics get demoted? Thanks again for such great content!
I have a Kallax shelf. I am so excited I learned about the Kallax Axis System today to improve my life and my board game organization.
I look forward to how the axis system works in Quinn’s fridge.
I would really love an episode of "card games that don't suck" featuring hanafuda deck. I own one, but only ever played twice, because the scoring is usually really convoluted to remember.
Love that you own shogun! It was the first big box game my group owned and I was always found it strange that it wasn't more popular in BGG or the community in general being such a deep and repayable game
When I watched this video the first time back in 2019 I had been playing board games for about 3 years but had not started my own collection. Now that I have a pretty decent sized collection, it was fun to come back to this video and see all of the games I am now intimately familiar with and are in my collection.
I have to say I am very surprised by Quinn's take on Vital Lacerda games. On Mars is one of my favorites of all time and the Gallerist was my introduction to his designs. It seems like something that would be right up Quinn's alley. But then again, they do attempt to be simulationist in the most abstract ways and I can see how you would either love it or hate it.
Thank you Quinn !!! Amazing to see that you also appreciate the Citadels game. I believe this game is sooo underrated. The art is beautiful (I have the older version that is not so cartoon-like), it's portable, it's simple to teach etc. I love the vibe this artwork brings to the game. I guess people are thrown away by the rather long "character selecation" phase. But if you have a certain strategy in mind, it's actually quite a fast process.
The old version of Citadels has some of the ugliest art I have ever seen in a game. Every character looks like the creepy, r4pey guy from Ever After.
That talk of having a game of Diplomacy got me thinking about your megagame videos. I think the second one isn't on RUclips yet? Is it coming in the future?
Anyways, lovely stuff, fellas!
1:12 Immediately paused here to look up the Celestia Expansions that I didn't know existed until this video
A+ for the Mage Wars streams. Thanks for the tour!
The axis from Euro to Knizia, also known as the Axis of Evil
Knowing what you keep is so useful! And so is a series like CGTDS... I always love your guys's humor and your gaming priorities. But with all BG experts on the Internet, I'm really just sifting through everyone's cult-of-the-new bias for just the evergreen stuff. Topics like this give me hope that you guys will eventually find me a smaller firehose.
Awww, no Fog of Love? I had it ordered from halfway around the globe away due to your review. It's awesome.
Love to see this again to compare what ones are still around after 3 years
This was a great heartwarming video, love it.
Thanks for the look on the inside! Love you guys.
When are we going to get a video on Matt's Top 138 Cameras?
"Mormon-heavy biome" just killed me. You guys are great.
Ok, what is archaeology? I have never heard of that one before? Great vid by the way. Its always fun to see and 'rummage' through anothers' collection.
I remember I had the chance to say hi to Quinns the first year SUSD did the GDC showcase (Mysterium, Codenames, etc..), and we talked about how I was just getting into board games and had no friends to play with yet, but my favorite app was Tigris and Euphrates. His eyes glazed over like I had so so much to learn (which I did...) Nonetheless I'm happy to see T+E and Knizia's other classics have come out in full force since then, comprising their own genre. They are timeless!
19:35 "their own cross to burn", jeez that was a dark mishap haha
That stealth sailor moon keeping watch over the collection by moonlight though
Quinns, you forgot Detective which is in my house.
How did that happen? It's a mystery.
(I'll see myself out. Lovely to see you. Ta-ta)
Technically yours now!
Is this an example of industrial espionage?
Nice video. Great content. I was wondering where’s el grande?
Just got to "the little games" and I gotta say, my collection is slowly becoming just those. I almost always favor a small, easy to learn, hard to master game with a light theme these days.
"this central section represents the dark heart of boardgames, which is spooky games"
Scrabble certainly spooks me in the same way when I'm asked to do remedial maths.
I bought Witness just because your video was so damn fun to watch!
The Animal Kingdom deck and Navigators deck are excellent choices. Good stock and finish. In my collection, too! Although I’m now at around 100 decks, they’re still some of my best
Nice idea, love the video!
Knightmare Chess is wonderful. The card "Earthquake" in that game blew my mind as a young man newly discovering games.
Diplomacy was one of my first games...would love to see a play through!
Thanks for helping me in choosing a proper kallax (cold salmon) for myself!
4:15 I like how "Scrabble" is in the "Spooky"/"Dark hearth" section :D
Reading RPGs is a perfectly reasonable way to enjoy them.
This video made me appreciate my board game collection. Even if some of games only rarely get tablespace
What about a game where you roleplay as boardgamer with severe hoarding tendencies all about expanding and organising your boardgame collection?
I can't believe you don't have a copy of Mechs vs Minions! :) Stunning collection anyway.
You guys spark me joy
We need to talk about this whole Mel Gibson Batman thing
Did the UK get a whole Batman series the rest of the world was denied?
We need answers!
I think there needs to be a enquiry on the Mel Gibson batman, or a 2 second thing in the next pod cast.
Aw man, I was hoping you'd mention why you had Wiz War in your "bad but I keep them anyway section"
Wiz War (The original edition) was one of the first board games I played that wasn't a roll & move game (or risk), and I really enjoyed it back in the 90s. The reprint changed some rules around and, I feel, took it from an ok game to a worse game. The original had a small box! It was my uncle's game, and me and my cousins liked it so much that my aunt tried to buy us copies. After a few years of waiting to see if it'd ever be printed again, she decided to make her own version, with nice card stock and that kinda cork-y cardbard for the tiles. She added in custom cards for the family too, it was really cute and memorable. I was really tall growing up (still am), so my spell lets you grow really tall and walk over a labyrinth wall.
Anyway, I saw the reprint, bought it immediately, and was fairly disappointed. They changed some rules, and then in the back of the rulebook, mentioned an "alternative" way to play that was just all the old rules! I guess they tried to improve it, realized they didn't (couldn't? I'm not sure what i'd change, other than finding a way to make it more confrontational), and shipped it out anyway.
Cool video, looking forward to more as usual
i'd love to watch you stream Knightmare Chess!
Some excellent RPGs there, Unknown Armies is a personal favorite of mine. And I'm pretty sure I remember adverts for Knightmare Chess.
Since you were kinda all over the place in the video, would it be possible to have the actual list of 138 games? (Including the one you loaned to NPI.)
www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos/quinns-walks-you-through-his-game-collection/
That is some collection!
I think I might also store my games in a Kallax someday.
"I run so much, I runned up and down"
I love love love Legend of the Five Rings RPG and own every book and module printed from 1st to 4th edition. My friends and I played so long we transitioned our characters each time to match the new editions of the game.
Playing a game of Diplomacy is like the scene from The Dark Knight where the Joker has a job offer, and a broken billiard cue. The game being the Joker, and the players the applicants.
Knightmare Chess is fun, if you like a bit of chaos in your chess. I haven't played my copy in a long time, though.
This video merely points out just how different our collections are, how very different our tastes are, beyond the very few games we both seem to have in common.
With that said, I also like to collect RPG books and whether I actually play those games or not one day, remains to be seen, but probably not. They are fun to read regardless. I used to collect a bunch of the Warhammer 40k source books as well. And I also have a bunch of X-Wing in my closet that I hope to one day play.
This was very cute and quite wholesome, I'm very happy
Oh God. This is probably going to cost me more money than any other video on RUclips. I do love seeing all those great games together though!
“Sometimes I don’t even hang them around my neck”
Scrabble... There has never been a game more terrifying....
OH THE LITERACY, OH THE HORROR👻
Matt has the loveliest smile at the end there
2:51 "Taj mahal isn't that good"
Mastering the teach video: "I love this game for its mean auctions"
Didn't expect for such a big RPG corner. Any way to have some coverage on any of those any time soon?
Holy crap, "mormon heavy biome" slayed me.
Seeing your collection, saying what you like and what you don’t like (how do you mean you didn’t like the Gallerist or Lisboa), I realized our tastes are very different. Won’t stop me from enjoying the videos though 😉
Would it make sense to do another one of these? A new one with Ava or Emily's collection, or an update to older ones? I love watching these!
I may be wrong but, is that the Digimon Tamers score I hear? Love it!
Its so hard to stop buying new awesome games...sometimes I hate myself for being so obsessed...
PS: Lovely Voltron Poster there.
"all the role-playing games I will never play!" yeah, that's actually relatable
Diplomacy is a great game to play during a games day or weekend. Set it up on a side table or even in another room. Then play your other games throughout the day as normal however during downtime players can also negotiate their Diplomacy turns and when ready submit their turn (maybe drop their paper orders into a jar in the main gaming room). Every hour or two just pause what you're doing to resolve a turn of Diplomacy.
Diplomacy is also a great play by email game if you have a big game group. It requires a GM to collect the turns and email the results and map to everyone. Usually 1 or 2 turns per week. Gives time for the players to call/text/email each other for negotiation.
www.backstabbr.com/ Best Diplomacy website IMO
Question: Have you played Codenames: Pictures? It's such a simple and obvious tweak to the original, and it makes the game so much better (and less ugly). I would strongly recommend swapping it into your collection instead of vanilla Codenames.
On a side note, I'm happy to see that you still have Tash-Kalar. I'd been wondering about that since you regularly talk about Vlaada games on the podcast, but never seem to mention that one, and I really like that game :D
So honoured to have a list made for me
Putting games on a shelf... hmmm, interesting idea, I just use the Fort-On-The-Floor system but I guess shelves work too. 🙂
I've actually had a lot of success with Hanafuda, specifically the game Koi-koi. When teaching it I tend to aim for a 6-round game instead of the traditional 12 rounds, so as not to shackle people to a game they might not like, but out of the dozen or so people I've explained the game to over the years, *ALL* of them, without exception, wanted to continue after 6 rounds and play the full game to the end.
It does require a lot of explaining at first, though. Usually I don't explain everything in one go, but add card combinations after each round (starting with the ones that are easiest to remember), and explaining some of the more granular rules as they become relevant, getting closer and closer to the full game over the course of 3 or 4 rounds.
Great to see the OG RoboRally in there! But do none of you play Dice Throne?
Where is the compulsory Battlestar Galactica? It a surprising omission from an otherwise perfect collection. Nice work as always guys.
This is pretty much me, every time i wrap up a game night with people who are just getting into games
Sad to see yoh decided to get tid of Warrior Knights, one of the first games I saw you review, and a game I have had on the table a ton of times.
The look of shame on Quinns face when he has to justify all those star wars minis.
I own that same hanafuda deck! I had to buy one after I saw the movie Summer Wars.
Your board game organization system makes me happy.
I haven't seen this much Quinns belly since 'The Wet Retirement Special.'
Is that a Prisma Visions tarot deck on the Small Games Shelf?
That deck is so amazing, and my wife wrote the manual for it!
you should get the Hive Carbon version, it's so pretty. comes with a travel bag too, so it's quite easy to store.
Loved “Mormon-heavy biome” 😂
There are a lot of us around there, who can blame you for that error
