As Austrian I am happy to see this gets more attention also outside of central europe 👍. whenever i have the chance i go ski touring as we call it and it is a great way to stay fit during winter. Combined with xc skiing training you really get in shape 💪
As a Norwegian, I approve off this. Here in Norway, we climb the Norwegian mountains whit this type off skies in the winter. I personally use xc skies in my winter training. Great training.
Seems like all the norwegian watched this video and comment on it :D In southern germany/austria it's also pretty common when you abandon the pure fun of skiing downhill and want to have some exercise or backcountry experience.
Didn't really get why the norwegians use cross country skis instead of Freeride/touring skis with skins. Especially in some regions it would definitely provide for fun downhills...
At 63 years I have seen changes in skiing equipment and terminology related to Alpine style and Cross Country style and Ski Mountaineering from the 1970s to now. Never have I heard the term "SkiMo". Likewise I have seen changes in cycling to from where there was no such thing as Mountain Bikes to now Gravel and Cyclo Cross. When I lived where there was snow I had Cross Country skiis and downhill or Alpine Skiis. Ski Mountaineering usually meant trying to climb a mountain over several days time like backpacking but with skiis on. This was an activity that was very serious because the weather could obviously kill. I have never participated in this kind of activity but have wished to and I am not dead yet. I agree that the activity of using skiis without a ski lift is a great alternative to cycling in winter but I have noticed that the first few times out there are muscles that get sore and tired that are not ones used in cycling. So it is wise to be aware and not do too much until you are used to the specific activity.
63 is definately not to old! Go try it! Since you're experienced with skiing, the sky's the limit (or cliffs perhaps). If you haven't skied in a while, then just choose an easier descent. Something "easy" like doing it in a ski resort like these guys would be good for training, but you loose some of the exploration feeling. Oh, and by the way, the first French National Championship in cyclocross was in 1902 :) What we now know as mountain bikes and gravel racing is newer like you said though.
seahog32 I thought it was a euro thing. Here in Canada it’s ski touring if you’re just skiing normal laps but skimo if you are on little 65mm waist skis or if you are climbing a technical mountain.
@@patricklogan313 I think I have always considered ski touring to encompass any kind of gear and terrain in a given day but being out over a night or more with an objective like a summit or going over a pass or two to be ski mountaineering. Backpacking on skis more or less.

Great video! I've skinned up a few ski areas in New England--Magic, Pico, Waterville, Sugarloaf. A great way to spend the day while the kids go skiing.
My first time on ski's? 1989 in Scotland. I was then into climbing and was teaching colleagues ice-climbing as they taught me ski mountaineering. The gear was a LOT more rudimentary (the boots were leather!) and you had to learn telemark turn technique for the downhill (I didn't, I just fell over if I wanted to turn or stop). Haha Jeremy stretching at 4:39 🤣🤣
Nice Jeremy , you looked pretty good for a first time.
We do this here in Northern Michigan but with less elevation :)
as an example for a standard alpine ski boot, you show a dynafit radical boot, which is a budget/heavy touring boot really.
That looked like a blast!
Rowers do this too. I remember at uni our rowing team use to go to Norway and cross country ski
Play Sports Network, how about a ski related channel, but focussed on Nordic/Cross Country/Ski Mountaineering?
Love Skimo, the more the merrier! And in 2026 It'll be in the olympics!

*sees Skimo in the title* "well the only one I know who calls it skimo is Dan from Velo Café" 30 seconds in "Wait that looks exactly like the Ski Patrol building at Mont Orford" *Jeremy : went up to visit Lyne Bessette* "Hey, whaddayaknow, our local federal MP!" *55 seconds in, new Orford chalet in the backgroud* "HOLY CRAP GCN WAS IN ORFORD!!
Beautiful scenery. I was hoping there'd be an overnight in a hut or something.
One quick advise if you want to start Skimo. Don't go crazy the mountains are extremly dangerous even if they seems to be save. You need to have a ton of experience and even then it's still dangerous. So pls guys stay save at this wonderful sport🙏🏼
Correct expression is ski touring and is quite common in Europe. The only problem is that the equipment is seriously expensive... Ski bindings 250eur, ski touring boots 450eur, skis 300eur, skins 150eur..
Great video, but I was expecting a XC ski video. Would still love to watch a video about Nordic skiing, as I think it is the most similar to cycling!
