- In this guide video, we showcase which PvP spells can be blocked by your shield or blocking weapon. This video breaks down each of the Wizard, Cleric, and Warlock spells into either a melee, projectile, hitscan, or area of effect type spell and showcases the strategy on how you can mitigate the damage.

As of a recent Hotfix, Magic Missiles no longer do any stagger to shields so they may now be completely blocked by any shield (or blocking surface such as the longsword/quarterstaff/etc.)
-ty to Oxy for the update!
you’re a game changer dude. no one else putting out this level of content. keep up the incredible work!
s tier
thank you for the kind words empowered, glad you enjoyed the video and more on the way!
I just want to add that the Perfect Block Skill actually allows you to block two Magic Missiles back-to-back since makes the first missile deal Tier 1 Block-stun, meaning your shield will recover in time to block the second.
Fantastic video, short and to the point while providing so much good information.
Glad to have a source outside of “just trust me bro” for Curse of Pain being hitscan 😅
I realised it doesn't work on shields after hitting a goblin's shield and wondering why I'm not healing of it
i always wondered why blocking some attacks led to the attacker being punished, not giving them time to go for a second hit before i raise my shield, and sometimes getting hit after a succesful block since i cant raise my shield fast enough, i think thats the impact power you talked about later
Really respect the dedication and clarity in your videos. So refreshing to learn about these involved mechanics when the game is still pretty new/niche and there's not as much coverage. Thank you!
glad you enjoyed the vid Shigi!
Amazing video, we really needed this type of content, hyped for the upcoming blocking mechanics video!
You're the king of this games video content as far as I can tell - keep it up, brother!
Appreciate your insight!
amazing videos as usual, great job Ryan!
Finally found a channel doing the technical tests like this in DaD. THANK YOU
more test to come!
Im amazed how informative your videos are, never learned this much in school
haha thanks jooka, working on my dungeon degree at the moment
@@ryan6daysaweekare you gonna make guide that shows the best spots on 3 different layouts on goblin caves maps? Im planning to print all of them for easier navigation but guide would be awesome
Really good video thanks for the dedicated information and clear demomstrations.
thank you for the kind words Liam, glad you enjoyed the vid!
Best dark and darker informational / educational content.
Haha great video, also saw Oggieson in the discord replying about how he was getting parry and riposte kills off magic missiles 😂😂
Yet another quality, concise video.
Great video as always
This guy is the most knowledgeable player in the game he knows all the stats
good effort, informative vid. TY
Glad it was helpful!
we need a video on the new changes please. Weapon changes, goblin cave module randomization explained and stuff like that would be fire to see it you are the only guy i trust in bringing us that kinda content
I'll definitely look into it lukarito! There changes come pretty fast and sudden so I might make this more of a thing on full release when the balance updates are more spread out!
could you also test the new ray of darkness it seems very bad but maybe there is something about it that we didnt find out yet@@ryan6daysaweek
I love diagrams that i can screenshot. Subbed
Man I just Bardiche blocked a fireball then dove in for the kill, thanks for the video.
Great video! I definitely learned a lot from it. I have 2 questions though. You mentioned specifically that you can block the primary cast of chain lightning. Do you know if it is possible to block a secondary chain lightning hit? For example, if your ally takes a direct chain lightning hit, can you use your shield to block the lightning from chaining to you? My second question is do you know if it is possible for multiple magic missiles to hit during the block recovery window? I've seen some wizards with some pretty high cast speeds, and I'm curious if you did any testing to see if it is possible to get multiple hits in during a single block recovery. Would be really important info if you are trying to push a geared wizard player.
ur talking about it bouncing off from one player to another i doubt it
Thanks nice video
Yessss. You're the GOAT
You're a boss Ryan! we love you.
thank you tanner, hope all is well!
To add to this, Explosion can be blocked like all hit-scans.
MM has been fixed and can be fully blocked.
Chain lightning can be blocked only if you are the first target, the chain effect cant be blocked.
Bard has a projectile attack now, which I'm assuming can also be blocked.
I saw something crazy on oggieson's stream... his buddy nightshine was blocking fireballs with a bardiche? or halberd whichever is the one barbarian can use and it can block, and he was just fully negating the fireball damage and splash. Would be cool if you also included the other weapons with blocks as well, also will be interesting to see the POV of nightshine... it looked like he was crouching and full blocking fireballs lol
all info in this video applies to any weapon that can block! So technically you can also block hitscans with weapon blocks but it is much much harder
2:31 I know Oggieson and Katie are crazy enough to do that with ease.
thank you
Ya know, I was supposed to spend the last couple hours before the wipe workin on the EU longsword tournament highlights vid, but after watching this vid, I'm now in goblin caves yelling at random warlocks to fight me for some reason...couldn't tell ya why
How did you create the thumbnail, good content
Might need to add summon hydra to this list now lol
Watching commercial and already voted up :)
wait, since hellfire is so slow can you cast hellfire run up to it and trigger the longsword parry off your own hellfire ?
ty
I found out that you could block zaps with a shield on accident, I managed to kill a purple kit wizard in gob caves while I was a basic kit fighter, the panic in his movements told me that he also didnt know you could block zaps lmao.
I was just in a game on ruins with you!!!
Is there any other way to cancel/stop the animation of magic missle without a shield I wonder?
Ty
strange, I've already blocked a full magic missile cast, idk why
Can you make a video showing which spells can hurt the warlock while in phantomize? I play warlock but I'm not sure what spells I need to be looking out for. I thought the bard's piercing shrill (or whatever flute spell does damage) would hurt me since it lists magical damage, but I did not get hurt by it.
All magic but at 50% reduce damage. But physical Meele like blow of corruption doesn't. This includes traps. But tou are immune to poison!
At the moment it looks like any AoE magic damage spell will hurt you and hitscan, projectile (just the projectile component), and melee magic will not. The bard's piercing shrill is physical damage but din of darkness is magic so it will hurt you.
Dope
New Warlock spells dropped today XD
ggs on ruins you just killed me. Love the vids
thank you for the love talknchat and thank you for the fight, it was an honor
wonder if there is some spicy warlock tech where you toss out a hellfire then swap to a longsword and parry-riposte it yourself right when you get into melee range of your enemy
edit: tested it, unfortunately no cannot parry your own hellfire - very sad
So glad barbs can use round shields now! Cries in wizard
Cool, i like shield content
sweet new ryan video
thank you hex!
Ik it hard to get your hands on but what about unique weapon effects such as fulgor lightning
fulgor lightning is considered melee magic!
great video, i just wanna add that curse of pain is a projectile even if it doesnt looks like it, in fact we still dont really know if its a bug or what
okayy i need to play longsword lock and hellfire forward and riposte my own hellfire
Maybe it was a glitch... but I was running perfect block on my Fighter and have blocked a fireball and taken zero damage.
I'd like you to confirm that the warlock curses are actually hitscan because i heard otherwise from a different youtuber and since they look inconsistent as hell when watching them in gameplay I m also tending towards that they are not.
warlock curses are hitscan though it may not seem like that visually due to the tracer. You can tell they are hitscan due to them having no damage travel time when casted on training dummies... also in the game files there is no projectile component for the curse haha
Don't bucklers fully block magic missiles and even reflect them away/back at their source?
I wish this was the case - there is the unique Aegis which is a heater shield and has the ability to full block and reflect all magic projectiles
2:31 KEKW
3:14 Have not played this game so, does casting spells on the legs do less damage?
only projectile spells. Hitscans will still do full damage on leg casts
these are good videos? can you add captions?
One thing isnt quite true here, when me and a friend tested Pavise, i was playing Cleric and used holy strike, when he blocked with the pavise normally he took damage, but when he crouched, even when aimed behind the shield he took absolutely no damage whatsoever, please try it.
i am unable to recreate this effect, was your friend on ranger or fighter and do you remember what shield perks they had on if any?
@@ryan6daysaweek he was on fighter so we could test all shields, as for perks, i am not entirely sure, like i said, while standing normally blocking with Pavise, we both noticed he took damage as normal, we figured the feet registered as taking damage as would any melee or otherwise ranged weapon.
When crouching and blocking, facing me, i first aimed the holy strike on top of him, then the most peculiar thing happened, nothing, no damage, we couldnt believe it and thought it was a fluke, the second one i targeted the same spot, again, no damage, i aimed then behind the shield, i could see my aoe circle just behind the Pavise and by all means should cover my friend entirely, but nothing happened, we figured that while crouching and blocking with the pavise, facing the caster, if the caster cant see any hittable part of the target, the aoe spell doesnt work, kinda like how judgement cant target a area of the players shield that is currently blocking, we didnt test this with Locust Swarm or Earthquake nor with Lightning Strike as we only had a short amount of time to test it out of sheer curiousity.
EDIT: However, one thing i might have forgotten which may have played a key difference, i think we tested this when he was standing at a doorway, its possible crouch blocking at a doorway for some reason blocks the damage.
Very informative and creative!! But as the witch, you shall never beat my magick!! Hope you are doing well, @Ryan6DaysAWeek
this inspired me to make yet another all str character... haha sorry for the late reply on this one Leo, hope you are well!
@@ryan6daysaweek You defy the witch with your strength?!?! The treason!! Hope all it well, Ry!!!
a little unfortunate timing conisdering they just revealed a ton of new spells for warlock which I'm assuming at least some of them will be relevant for a blocking video
curse of pain is not hitscan it is indeed projectile cause you have to lead with it to land it.
curse of pain is a hitscan - the required lead you feel is due to the casting delay and not the projectile traveling. There is also no projectile for curse of pain in the game files haha
Really... did not know that thx for the clarification.@@ryan6daysaweek
Didnt even know that Warlock spells are hitcan. I read somewhere that they have minimal traveltime. At least curse of pain.
Can someone say something to this ?
I mean on my warlock I almost never use the other spells but curse of pain is definitely not hitscan
CoP)
Isn't reduced by projectile resistance
Can't headshot
Doesn't stagger shields when it's blocked by them
Has no projectile data in the files
And is very clearly damaging the target before the animation reaches them when you watch it slowed down.
They are hitscan. There is no projectile data for them in the files, and they have no travel time.
4:40 can i assume you tried to block chain lighting after it hit someone else?
The chain jump is unblockable it even goes through walls
I blocked an ice bolt and it did less damage but the aoe still hit me
might have been some server lag that counted it as a leg shot for reduced damage, I tried replicating this on shield and longsword and couldn't get the damage to go through. What were you using to block?

Hey, are you sure curse of pain is hitscan?

You forgot ~Judgement that can be blocked
I wish shields and weapons always had collision. I went to shield bash an archer and got shot through the shield into my face.
who are you on the seventh day, ryan?
brian
Unfortunately this video is coming out right as new spells are getting released
don't let anyone tell you shields are bad, they are very very very good.
Every other class get nerfed in patches, and wizards just got nerfed by this video popularizing information on countering them
time for this video to become outdated in a single day with the new warlock spells lol better get ready with that addendum
sup, is this one up to date?
Hold up. Everywhere else I saw that warlock curses and sacrifice are NOT hitscan, but actually projectile with a very fast travel time. Matter of fact, everyone says that you have to actually lead your shots. Am I (and all the others) mistaken?
Yes, you are all mistaken. They are not projectiles. There is no projectile data in the files, they do not have travel time, and they do not stagger shields or have impact power.

Actually warlock spells are projectiles, it’s crazy cause they LITERALLY look hit scan and feel hit scan but they are indeed projectiles that’s why it’s so hard to hit sac or pain some times
Warlock curses are hitscan as there is no projectile component in the game files - it may feel like a projectile though since there is a casting delay
I thought Warlock spells are projectiles, not hitscan? They travel very fast but they aren’t instant. My understanding is that’s why curse of pain seems to have a different hitbox than zap, because the player hitscan hitbox is larger than their character model hitbox
You are correct

Very interesting, thanks for the info!
Hey, warlock spells are not hitscan, they do have travel time. Great vid btw!
No, they're all hitscan besides Hellfire.

Warlock spells are hitscan, but the hitbox is way less forgiving than for wizard spells for whatever reason.
@KalliousTallon I exclusively play warlock and I'm pretty confident they do have travel time. If you "lead your shots" slightly while someone is running you generally have a better chance of dotting them. It's fast but it's not hitscan I don't think. Kinda like an arrow speed
@@christowers7307 That is due to a combination of CoP's hit radius being a needle, and the casting animation all spells have causing a delay between releasing your mouse and the spell going off. There literally isn't projectile data for CoP in the game files, it cannot be a projectile.
@@KalliousTallonplay warlock rn and watch a projectile fly from curse of pain cast
Warlock spells aren't hitscan, which doesn't rly end up mattering in the context of this video but is good to know :)
Warlock curses are hitscan as there is no travel time... also there is no projectile component in the game files haha
I would like to state that all of Warlock's current spells are NOT hitscan, but instead, they have really fast travel time. This can be proven, because any warlock player knows that you have to compensate for the travel time by aiming forward/where the target is headed, rather than where they are. Anyone one running "x-axis" on your screen you cannot just hit them like zap, you have to aim ahead. Idk if im explaining this right, but if you know, you know.
That might have to do with latency but idk, haven't played much warlock
I personally haven't tested it but if both dot spells don't trigger a block reaction then they are hitscan and you are probably just barely missing your target
Please do not spread misinformation. Warlock's spells have been experimentally testsd to be hitscan. You can find a video of it. If you cannot find one, mention me and I'll send a link.
All of Warlock’s curses are hitscan. They just don’t cast at the time you expect them to do. The cast happens at the very end of the casting animation. There’s no need to lead your shots. Just track them until the animation finishes and you’ll hit.
@@Wayhazel I'm being serious, it is not misinformation. If you travel far enough away to see the Warlock's spell "Curse of pain" from a distance, shot at an "x axis" you will literally see it travel, its a very fast projectile, but it is not hitscan.
