  • Here are the only examples I could find in 8 years of closings for the Burns and Allen TV series where George actually said the words, "Say goodnight, Gracie". Out of roughly 250 show closings checked: *FIVE TIMES*.
Wanna see all the times he didn't say it?
    • Burns and Allen - Clas...
[NOTE: If you're wondering why this is appearing on the You Bet Your Life channel, it's due to account problems I've been having on the channel this really belongs on. Sorry for any confusion.]

The goodnight she says at 0:44 is so gentle and beautiful.

Even George himself got it wrong once. In one of his books "Wisdom of the 90s" he says:
_We also had a finish that never missed. You may have seen a version of it at the end of our Burns and Allen television show. I'd ask her something, usually about her family, and we'd get into a routine where she gave answers that made sense to her, but not to anyone else. Then when things got really confusing, which they always did, I'd give up and say, "Say goodnight, Gracie." And she'd say, "Goodnight, Gracie."_

After raking through all of the other comments, I gotta throw these in:
(1.) George himself admitted "she MIGHT have said 'Goodnight, Gracie' ONCE."
(2.) One person in this chat quotes from a section of one of the books George Burns had written in which George actually makes reference to his wife having said "Goodnight, Gracie."
(3.) Many years ago I watched an old Flintstones cartoon episode in which a pastiche version of Burns & Allen was briefly featured; and whatever the names were of these two (if NOT "George and Gracie"), the "George" character did prompt her "Say goodnight, [her name in the cartoon]," and so she said "Goodnight, [her name]." This gag, again, having appeared in the Flintstones, predates the Rowan & Martin "Goodnight, Dick" by some years.
(4.) Finally, perhaps "Goodnight, Gracie" was a gag from their radio show which somehow never made the transition into the Burns & Allen television show; and judging from the video sample in which Gracie only says "goodnight" in the several samples of episodes shown, my guess is that at each TV show's conclusion, Gracie Allen only said "Goodnight" (and not "Goodnight, Gracie") because she wanted to give the salutation as her real world self, instead of uttering the more comical "Goodnight, Gracie" as her in-character self.

@vincent sartain: I concur! Definitely your fourth reason seems the most valid in the Gracie-admiration-saturated brain over here that belongs to me. :)

Did Grace Allen ever actually say "Goodnight, Gracie" after being prompted by George?

Never happened, no! George is on record many times pointing out it never happened, too.

Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life I came here thinking that I would find her saying "goodnight Gracie" I was sure I had seen it - some team did that - who was it? does anybody know?

annab1223 Wikipedia says it could have been Dan Rowan and Dick Martin of Laugh-In but you have to consider the source as to whether or not that is true.

Sam King They used the gag on "Laugh In" regularly-- Wikipedia is correct. Dan would say, "Say goodnight, Dick", and Dick would answer "Goodnight, Dick". Burns and Allen *never* did this gag.

If the ‘Goodnight Gracie’ line was not part of their bit, why did Barbara Walters do the bit with George Burns at the end of her interview with him? A complete non sequitur? Barbara knew the punchline and was ready to go.

    It is a Mandela Effect.

This is a Mandela Effect. A reality change. Research it. In every episode she replied with a "smart" ....Goodnight Gracie.... not just "Goodnight" like she's bowing down to his order to say goodnight! It makes no sense. It has changed.

It's no more a "Mandela Effect" than Rick saying "Play it again Sam" which he never said.

This is indeed the Mandela effect, but not the way you meant it. It apparently did not happen the way you (and countless others) think you remember it. And that is what makes it the Mandela effect.
