The take home point to me, is to use any of the many 12W chargers I have laying around, and not spend a dime or get any new cables, and it’s nearly just as good!
Actually 18W.. the max a iPhone can draw is 18W.. any 18W... 2.4A or 3A and 5V adapter will max out an iPhone fast charging... does not even have to be USB-C as many claim... this is simply not true.. USB-A with these specs using Apple protocol (usually marked "2.4A") will charge an iPhone just as fast...
I bought the insignia wireless fast charger for $29 at Best Buy. The power brick included is 15W and until I get my iPhone X, I have my lightning cord plugged into it, and it works a little faster than my iPad 12W power brick. So I’m good now, and I’m good in a few months. Third party Power Brick is the way to go. I’m looking forward to that Fast Charge software update from Apple too.
They are, i found one www.amazon.com/Lightning-Metrans-Connect-Macbook-MacBook/dp/B06XCGXTQ4/ref=pd_sim_107_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B06XCGXTQ4&pd_rd_r=P91ZNDPCSM2W8D20ZK2G&pd_rd_w=MMcvs&pd_rd_wg=mNKn6&psc=1&refRID=P91ZNDPCSM2W8D20ZK2G
If I'm not mistaken, i have a usb c to usb a adaptor i purchased from amazon. I plug the adaptor into my MacBook power brick and from my knowledge. i get faster charging on my iphone 6s... I would love too see you or any other youtuber cover this because we as consumers shouldn't have to buy the latest and greatest in order to get this feature.
Hands down, you make the best videos on RUclips! Very Intelligent AND articulate AND the pace that you use is right on! Jeff, you know Im shooting you straight, I have ni reason for saying this to you....I just live on RUclips...learning, exploring,,,, Tell you what I am going to use this video as a demo to show other people how to do it.... Your temp is so spot on normally recommend people use a visual tool (like a whiteboard/ dry erase to show where they have been/ where they are going type thing..its hand if you have a lot of info and it's very convoluted? But you don't need that sort of thing. create a video on how to make videos and pass it around seriously......great job!
iPhones are programmed by Apple to take in a specific amount of watts when charging, you can go out and buy a 150w if you wanted to. But if it’s only programmed to take in 29w then that is all you’re going to get.
The iPhone 8 battery has a power of 6.96 Watts. It can only take a maximum of 6.96 Watts. A 12 Watts charger would suffice (5V 2,4A). Always test the output power of the outlet with an energy consumption meter. No matter the size of the Apple charger, it will only take 5V for iPhone and iPad. On large Apple chargers, voltages above 5V will only be used for MacBook.
There are no MFi-certified USB-C to Lightning cables to my knowledge, so I can't recommend those. If you hear of one, please let me know and I'd be happy to review it.
So I’m going to be getting the X soon and I’m confused on the fast charging still. If I get the Aukey brick can I still use the standard usb to lightning cable to have fast charging or do I need the usb-c to lightning to have fast charging
A good method is using a fast charger during the day to top off, and then using the 5w adapter for overnight charging. By reducing heat in the battery, you prolong the life.
So for someone who has Macbooks already, just use a usb-c to usb-a adapter and plug it directly into the power adapter. It should now become a faster charger (not as fast as usb-c) but same rate as an ipad charger while costing less
Do you even speak English ? There are alternatives, Apple sells you a sleek looking charger that goes well with your iPhone. If you don’t care about that, these 2 chargers shown there do the job just fine.
Noam Wow you are brainwashed. The standard charger included is fine and if you don't like it, then buy a better charger. Just because he isn't as entitled as you are doesn't mean that he's a sheep. Grow up.
I actually own the Aukey 29 watt with removable cap. I love it. But I primarily bought it to charge my Nintendo Switch and the RavPower 20k mAh battery pack
Nice job Jeff. This video has me wondering...if you couple a 12 or 29w plug with a wireless Qi charger, does it still charge faster or does the wireless charger govern the wattage throughput?
The 12w iPad charger is plenty fast and only requires buying the adaptor because you can use your standard cable. Also many people, myself included, already have an iPad so there's no need to buy anything and still get quick charging.
The faster you charge, the sooner you'll visit a service center to replace your battery because its capacity will drop from 100% to 70-80 for half a year, I'm sure.. and let's guess the prices of the batteries, especially the X's. I'm staying with iPad's 12W - golden middle
I seem to be getting great charging speeds with my iclever 29w 2.4 Amp charger. I'd like to know how that normal charger compares to the usb c one. Could you do a vid on that? Your vid is the only one I've found that's actually showing people this.
From seeing dead to 30min charging tests from a few various YTers I don't think the 8 supports the full power of the 29w. Many of the vids I've seen show in 30mins the "fast-charge" setup only leads by 5-8% over the ipad 12w/2.4a adapters rather than what should be around double given the boost to 29w so I suspect the 8 can only charge up to around 15-16w which would place it around the QC2.0 quick charge speed.
You should try nifty mobile charger. The red one. It can fast charge the iPhone 8 out of the box. You get fast charging and a mobile charger at the same time. It's great...
Are you going to do an updated version of this video for the X R, X S, & X S Max? I’m asking because i just got the X S Max & I was just using my iPad charger yesterday & the included 5W charger that came in the box to charge my new phone. The 10W iPad charger I have for my 2016 iPad Pro still seems to charge my iPhone pretty fast
Cool. Thanks for doing the research for us. Is it really better to use the official Apple cable? There are a lot of “apple certified” cables out there cheaper.
Thanks for the video tips. Can you use the 29 watt on an iPad air 2 or an iPhone 6s+? & will it eventually degrade the battery life?. With all the battery drain problems with each iOS update, it seems fast charging is more of an issue. I've seen the videos about turning things off so as not to drain the battery but you end up having to fuss with the features you bought the device for in the first place.
My local Staples had the 29W adapter on clearance a few months back for about 3 bucks, and got me an original usb-c to lightning cable on eBay for 7 bucks. $70 seems way to steep for this.
Has anyone noticed in this video that the fast chargers aren’t that great?? Hey Benjamin how come you didn’t mention that the fast chargers aren’t charging that much fast than the iPad chargers? In my opinion it’s not worth the money when in 30 mins the iPad does 46% which fast charger does 56%
10% is a fairly significant difference for a device that you use as much as the iPhone. It's not mind-blowing, but it is a difference. And I did sort of allude that the 12W is a good option, and did so in the written post as well. Included charts as well :) It will be up to each user to decide if it's worth it. For me? It is definitely worth it, as you're future-proofing, and the same adapter works for iPad Pro fast-charging as well.
9to5Mac I didn’t think about the future proofing part which makes a lot of sense appreciate the response love all the videos keep it up been a huge fan and 10% is a big difference just wanted to make sure people knew that the iPad chargers held up pretty well on the fast charger figured since iPad brick is 12watts and other is 29watts thought it would charge twice as fast
Bro I’ve been using an iPad charger since the iPhone 6 but most iPhone reviews kept saying that iPhones charge slowly I was like it fully charge is in like an hour then I realized I was using an iPad charger
Are you certain? I'm really curious about it because as far as I know the charger of the 12' macbook is different of the charger of the 13' MBP charger, and I think same applies for the charger of the 13' MBP and 15' MBP because quadcore. But I also read somewhere that USB PD quick charge for phones maxes out at 15W, so speed wise they'd indeed all be the same
Please, try changing iPhone 8 plus or 8 with stock inbox cable and any Qualcomm quick charge 3.0 adapter (non USB C) and compare with Oneplus dash charger and Samsung Note 8 charger and Google pixel charger and HTC fast charger and mediatek pump express charger and oppo vooc charger, all these chargers connected to iPhone 8 plus via stock iPhone lightening to USB A cable, to chk that whether we really need usb c adapter and cable or fast charger works on regular lightning to USB A cable unlike Apple says
Fast charging wears down the battery faster, so if you are charging over night anyway just stick to the included 5 Watt one. It’s not always about being the quickest...
Isn’t Apple use to give us the 12W charger? I remember having those on my iPhone 1 and iPhone 3G but wasn’t sure if that was 12W or 5W but it was just as big as the 12W back in the day as I never really pay attention at it
i´d like to know what happens after 30 min with each one, which one comes first to 100 % battery and how much time does it take for each of them all to reach 100%. As i have seen the only advantage is when it comes to 50% charge then the speed slows down and you only save like a half an hour for full battery charge.
Could you please tell me what happens with the charging speeds if I buy an aftermarket USB c to lightning cable? I want to save some money in that area too. It can't be that bad
Wondering if there is anyway to setup a setup or station to charge both iPhone X and MacBook Pro 13” at the same time with the same adapter provide with the MacBook!
I happen to have a 13 inch macbook pro which comes with a 65 watt usb C charger. Do I still need to buy the 29 watt charger to fast charge my iPhone 8 plus or should I just get the cable? I I use a higher powered wall brick, will damage the battery in the long run?
Do you think using a third party cable would have the same result? I'm using an official Apple 29W with a third party USBC to Lightning for my iPad pro. I wonder if I should have gone with the first party cable too??
What this video tells me is that my iPad charger is just fine, and I do t need to spend any more money for faster charging lol
Is it the 12W one?
Arman Talwar then why u whatching this
Frank Castle yeah
I use Anker chargers and they were 10 bucks on amazon...nothing but good things to say🤙🏾
The take home point to me, is to use any of the many 12W chargers I have laying around, and not spend a dime or get any new cables, and it’s nearly just as good!
Indeed. I bought the 12w ipad charger for my iPhone 7 last year. Gonna keep that one for the 8.
Perfect, been using the 12w for ages, so good. It’s always been fast charging, well fast enough.
Agreed
Thiago Martins so that works for fast charging the 7?
Actually 18W.. the max a iPhone can draw is 18W.. any 18W... 2.4A or 3A and 5V adapter will max out an iPhone fast charging... does not even have to be USB-C as many claim... this is simply not true.. USB-A with these specs using Apple protocol (usually marked "2.4A") will charge an iPhone just as fast...
i am going for 12W adapter thanks dude for posting
I was confused which adapter to buy. Thanks a lot bro
The difference between the 5w and 12w is substantial compared to 12w vs. 29w/30w.
Great video Jeff!
Thanks for watching.
You can get Google Pixel's 18w charger which might work best for iphones since iphones car only charge max of 15-18w
Thank u for this. I’ve always been wondering about third party for fast charging
Oo, super neat alternatives :)
the price of the lightning usb c cable is still pricy though :/ hopefully there’ll be mfi certified ones coming too
Hopefully...
The Apple USB C to USB 3 adapter also enables fast charging. But you dont get that extra cable
They are, i found one www.amazon.com/Lightning-Metrans-Connect-Macbook-MacBook/dp/B06XCGXTQ4/ref=pd_sim_107_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B06XCGXTQ4&pd_rd_r=P91ZNDPCSM2W8D20ZK2G&pd_rd_w=MMcvs&pd_rd_wg=mNKn6&psc=1&refRID=P91ZNDPCSM2W8D20ZK2G
DonaldPiperEar From the item description it says it only supports up to 2.4A when charging. Which isn't enough for fast charging iPhone 8
Ok you have right. So its dissapointing.
Awesome video been looking for someone to make a video like this and you nailed it👌🏼👌🏼
If I'm not mistaken, i have a usb c to usb a adaptor i purchased from amazon. I plug the adaptor into my MacBook power brick and from my knowledge. i get faster charging on my iphone 6s... I would love too see you or any other youtuber cover this because we as consumers shouldn't have to buy the latest and greatest in order to get this feature.
If you have the time the 5w charger is probably best for the battery to live a long time
Will it put more strain on the iPhone's battery if we use the iPad charger on it?
Hands down, you make the best videos on RUclips! Very Intelligent AND articulate AND the pace that you use is right on! Jeff, you know Im shooting you straight, I have ni reason for saying this to you....I just live on RUclips...learning, exploring,,,,
Tell you what I am going to use this video as a demo to show other people how to do it....
Thanks Jeff I just purchased my aukey charger ready for the iPhone X
Lot of work to make this video. Well done
What if we used 87 W charger of Macbook Pro's for iPhone 8/X?
It would charge at the same speed as the 29W.
it will be able to charge faster than time, which means that you no longer will need to charge your phone at any given time.
iPhones are programmed by Apple to take in a specific amount of watts when charging, you can go out and buy a 150w if you wanted to. But if it’s only programmed to take in 29w then that is all you’re going to get.
Put 87 W charger in front of iPhone. It will charge it self....
It'll blow up. No doubt.
Thank you for sharing! I’m happy that there are alternative ways for me to enjoy fast charging on iPhone 8 with cheaper price tag.
Thank you - was waiting for a vid like this 🙏could you do a similar one with iphone 7 vs iphone 8 and post the results?
Bro, which Microphone, you’re using for these video man? The sound is Awesome!
Very interesting, was hoping someone would do a video on this. If only you’d have chosen a third party usb c to lightening cable to finish with.
There are no MFi-certified USB-C to Lightning cables to my knowledge, so I can't recommend those. If you hear of one, please let me know and I'd be happy to review it.
9to5Mac Thanks, that's a bummer :-)
Nice, informative video. Thanks Jeff and 9to5Mac.
Wal Mart have the 29 watt Apple adaptor for $29 and the 12watt for $19
Thank you for acknowledging price gouging!!!!!
Heck yeah we’re going to save some money everything works in cheaper price👌🤙
Aukey is the good and cheap option I guess, given we don't need to change lightning cable
The first Aukey link to Amazon shows that it is out of stock and isn’t sure if it’ll ever be in stock...do you maybe have some form of alternative?
So I’m going to be getting the X soon and I’m confused on the fast charging still. If I get the Aukey brick can I still use the standard usb to lightning cable to have fast charging or do I need the usb-c to lightning to have fast charging
Thank you for this video. The thing I wish I could change the most about my iPhone 7+ is how long it takes to charge.
Brian Mills which charger you are using i also have iphone 7 plus it took 2-3 hours
this was very helpful THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A good method is using a fast charger during the day to top off, and then using the 5w adapter for overnight charging. By reducing heat in the battery, you prolong the life.
I charge both my iPhone and iPad Pro with a PlayStation 4, not the best setup but it works like a charm
I can still hear: "this is Jeff, with iDownloadBlog!"
I would use both honest the small one for just normal use not anything crazy maybe charging over night
Very very good information I'm looking this information and couldn't find it until now. Thanks very good infos and solid video.
So for someone who has Macbooks already, just use a usb-c to usb-a adapter and plug it directly into the power adapter. It should now become a faster charger (not as fast as usb-c) but same rate as an ipad charger while costing less
So apple sale you an expensive device but doesn't give you fast charger ?? Shame! Shame! Shame!
apple dont care customers
you suck !!!
Do you even speak English ? There are alternatives, Apple sells you a sleek looking charger that goes well with your iPhone. If you don’t care about that, these 2 chargers shown there do the job just fine.
as long as there are sheeps like simon they will just continue to do this because like you see he is satisfied because he is stupid
Noam Wow you are brainwashed. The standard charger included is fine and if you don't like it, then buy a better charger. Just because he isn't as entitled as you are doesn't mean that he's a sheep. Grow up.
noam27v how bout you simply charge your damn phone. Letting your phone hit 1% is unresponsible. Nobody needs a fast charger. I could care less
I like the LED light! On the Anker!
would fast charging work if I used a normal lightning cable with a full-size USB to USB-C adapter?
no, need apple original TYPE-C cable.
no, need apple original TYPE-C cable.
THANKS i JUST ORDERD
Thank you for this video.
Imma buy the 12w
Can you please also review alternative lightning USB-C cable?
Best combo is an Anker braided cable and an Aukey charger.
I actually own the Aukey 29 watt with removable cap. I love it. But I primarily bought it to charge my Nintendo Switch and the RavPower 20k mAh battery pack
Yep, it works great for the Switch as well. I own two of these little guys.
At the time I only paid $17.00.
Nice job Jeff. This video has me wondering...if you couple a 12 or 29w plug with a wireless Qi charger, does it still charge faster or does the wireless charger govern the wattage throughput?
Exactly what I waited for
The 12w iPad charger is plenty fast and only requires buying the adaptor because you can use your standard cable. Also many people, myself included, already have an iPad so there's no need to buy anything and still get quick charging.
Now we need a USB-C - Lighting third party cable video
The faster you charge, the sooner you'll visit a service center to replace your battery because its capacity will drop from 100% to 70-80 for half a year, I'm sure.. and let's guess the prices of the batteries, especially the X's. I'm staying with iPad's 12W - golden middle

lumiy lightblade lamp is the best deal =) charging with a light for a pretty good price.
Cool. Thanks for doing the research for us. Is it really better to use the official Apple cable? There are a lot of “apple certified” cables out there cheaper.
This is CLUTCH!
yup it's good
Thanks for the video tips. Can you use the 29 watt on an iPad air 2 or an iPhone 6s+? & will it eventually degrade the battery life?. My old iPad came with a 10w charger. How does that compare?
My local Staples had the 29W adapter on clearance a few months back for about 3 bucks, and got me an original usb-c to lightning cable on eBay for 7 bucks. $70 seems way to steep for this.
Is it going to affect iphones battery if i use 3rd prty chargers???
I would pick 12W since it has USB-A port which fits still almost everywhere.

9to5Mac Could you tell me the result of 12W and 29W charger in 1 hour?
It's worth it.
Awesome video
if possible please do a comparison of charging speeds for the new iphones with the different macbook chargers
They all work, but charging speeds would all be the same.
Are you certain? I'm really curious about it because as far as I know the charger of the 12' macbook is different of the charger of the 13' MBP charger, and I think same applies for the charger of the 13' MBP and 15' MBP because quadcore. But I also read somewhere that USB PD quick charge for phones maxes out at 15W, so speed wise they'd indeed all be the same
Yes, they max out well before the threshold of chargers faster than the 29W.
by using other charging devices wont it affect the battery life n performance of my iphonex??
It’s not always about being the quickest...
wouldn't these third party chargers effect the battery efficiency or damage battery??
Parmpreet Singh all fast charging do, yes
Can I use the 29W adapter and the USB Lightning cable to charge my iPhone 5C and 10.5 iPad Pro?
Are these results from the iPhone 8 or plus?
Can I use the adaptor of USB-C for USB and connect my normal cable to the USB adaptor?
Well both of the recommended chargers are not available any longer... got any new recommendations?
plz show the total time required for full charge......for every chargers
Isn’t Apple use to give us the 12W charger? I remember having those on my iPhone 1 and iPhone 3G but wasn’t sure if that was 12W or 5W but it was just as big as the 12W back in the day as I never really pay attention at it
I bought the 30w brick is that good also or will it kill my battery
Do you happen to have a new link to the Aukey charger? The link in the description leads to “currently unavailable”
Damn! I wish i would of known this when I bought my 10.5 inch Ipad pro lol thanks for the info!
i´d like to know what happens after 30 min with each one, which one comes first to 100 % battery and how much time does it take for each of them all to reach 100%.
Great review informative!
Thanks!
and whats with the even faster adpaters, do these also work ?
Does charging a phone with a old ipad charger such as iPad Air 2 affect the iPhone 7?
Would this hurt the battery on iPhone?
Will the iphone 8 explode with these fast chargers... specially these 3rd party ones?
In sweden WE get 12 Wat adapters at default
Wondering if there is anyway to setup a setup or station to charge both iPhone X and MacBook Pro 13” at the same time with the same adapter provide with the MacBook!
I happen to have a 13 inch macbook pro which comes with a 65 watt usb C charger. Do I still need to buy the 29 watt charger to fast charge my iPhone 8 plus or should I just get the cable? I I use a higher powered wall brick, will damage the battery in the long run?
Can i fast charge iPad 2017 w/ the 45w charger ? I will also be using it for iPhone 8 so will it charge at 45w or 29w ?
Do you think using a third party cable would have the same result? I'm using an official Apple 29W with a third party USBC to Lightning for my iPad pro. I wonder if I should have gone with the first party cable too??
JasonWrites Bad idea. Get the MFI certified one always.
If we use an Anker 24W charger...Can it still fast charge my iPhone X with using the cable that comes in the box?
Is the 12w bad for the battery at all?
Can we use samsung s8 fast charging adapter and regular iPhone cable?
I know they recommend not using 3rd party cords for the fast charging, but would it still work if you did? No answers on the net for this :-(
How about the same test for the iPad Pros? Maybe they can suck more than 29W of power with a more powerful USB-C charger.
