Every XAOC device in my rack is YOUR FAULT Mr. Churchill! ❤ I’ve learned so much on your and Monotrail’s channels. I think it’s so cool you support each other’s efforts.
I am deciding if i get the Quadrax or the Batumi as my modulation source. While i really tend to go for the Quadrax (i own other Intellijel stuff and they work great), i found this video and here you are with a brilliant demonstration showing me the Batumi as multi timbral oscillator. Man you really threw me back with my considerations. ;-)
Thanks! It's a DSO138 kit - you can find them on Amazon/Aliexpress etc for cheap. I should probably get a Mordax Data at some point but this actually does the job pretty well for most things...
@@TomChurchill Great! Thanks for the quick reply and product link. I'm gonna look into grabbing one of these. I was looking for a portable battery powered scope, so this is perfect And yeah Mordax would be great to have too, but I like the portability of this one. And thanks for all the great videos. I've learned so much from you. Cheers
wow, this thing basically doubled it’s use value - for the part where you do a sine wave sequence, with a square sub - you routed the square through a module to remove one volt to take it down an octave - would it have been possible (and a lot easier) to just use the divider mode on the batumi to divide the frequency in half? if not then why not? and if so, why’d you do it via volt subtraction?
No, it wouldn’t have been possible in that particular patch because I was using channels 3 and 4 at much slower, free-running speeds for other modulation, which meant I had to use Free mode. In Divide mode all four channels are tied to the frequency of channel 1. The whole idea of that patch was to use a mix of audio-rate and LFO-rate signals at the same time. As for why I used Tesssitura Tailor to subtract a volt - simply because it was easier to dial in an exact octave that way rather than manually adjusting the frequency via the slider on Batumi, and it makes it quick and easy to switch between 0, -1 and -2 octaves.
@@TomChurchill oh i see, free and divide mode affect all 4 channels, of course, thanks! another question about the Poti - can you use the wavefolding / PWM functions in a static way, set to a static amount of PWM size or wavefolding, or are the PWM/wavefolding amounts always oscillating?
No worries! The amount of PWM/wavefolding is controlled by whatever CV signal you patch into Poti. So they’ll only be oscillating if you patch in an oscillator 😀 If you want a fixed amount, you can just patch in a steady offset voltage. (I guess there wasn’t enough room to include another set of pots for this on the unit itself)
@@TomChurchill ah i see, the poti jacks are inputs, not outputs! it says so in the manual, but it didn’t click in my head… relatively new to eurorack, apologies and thanks! i guess poti is connected to batumi by a cable underneath then…
If you have the Poti II expander you can set each channel’s ASGN output to a different shape (via the channel select button). Without the expander, all four outputs will share the same shape.
Great; that's so powerful. Although you can always wave shape and invert separate if you have the modules it's a great addition. Thanks for the clarification 👍🏼💗
It's videos from you like this that I need to remind me just how unfair it is to give modules like this a title of only _one "main" function._ I also feel it's irresponsible to claim this level of Eurorack gear is too expensive without watching a solid Churchill's Rundown™ or two, in full.
Yeah but he’s had those racks for years. You have to start somewhere. I have a couple of those too. I don’t really like using 19” racks for eurorack but it’s a low cost way to get started. The sad thing is Behringer makes a fake Batumi 1 for $99 and I recommend no one buys it even though it works fine and has the Poti built in. It’s very ugly. Support companies like XAOC, they are great guys and have innovated so much in the eurorack space.
This is a perfect example of what’s wrong with 90% of Eurorack tutorials: Introduce a module, then immediately launch into insanely advanced patches with a gazillion modules and hyper complex routing to confuse the hell out of the audience. Also, it’s key to zoom the camera out so wide that nobody can really see where/how you’re patching. Add in some hand blocking the camera and you’re golden!
I mean, if you listen he walks through every patch crystal. I have maybe 1/8 of the specific modules tom used in this video, but everything was perfectly clear to me.
Yiah as stated above, this isn't a tutorial; and as a primary *Modulation Source*, where do you expect patching to go from this thing except outward lmao?! Maybe you aren't ready to be looking into modules of this calibre yet?
Oh man, this thing has so much utility, here I was looking for a new LFO and maybe a couple oscilators for some simple fat sounds Guess I'll just grab this instead haha

Thanks - much appreciated!
I second this 💯
i think your videos are fantastic tom; simply the BEST at explaining the actual modules themselves; they are equally as good as monotrail's.
That’s very kind - thanks!
The rebirth of a classic. Amazing features
18:00 boy are those great sounds!
Crazy how good this sounds as an oscillator! I love XAOC Devices. Great video as always!

Nice! Great so see you dig deep with the module, so much good patch ideas! And thank you :)
Nice one! A good tag team effort here 😀
Love your Detroit techno patches and love your eloquence
That Xaoc rack is coming along nicely Tom, great demo as usual
Cheers Nick!
Utterly inspiring as always sir, thank you kindly.
So many great ideas packed into this video! Personal favorite: the modulated high-hat trick. Complex sequence achieved with such simplicity!
Cheers! Yeah, I really like that technique - one of those moments where you go ‘I wonder what would happen if…’ and get a nice surprise 😀
Some great tips in here Tom. Thanks for sharing!
Another great video! VCO mode sounds great! Batumi vs. Demon Core review next? :D
Nice video, nice module!
how good are xaoc. Look like an awesome update to a classic module. If i can find my mums wallet I am getting one...
Dear Tom, please stop costing me money which I don't have... I had no idea the Batumi could do all this, damn you! Brilliant Demo and awesome sounds!
Haha, you’re welcome 😀
If you sell Batumi 1 it’s not that expensive. If you don’t have Batumi 1, what are you doing with your life? You need it.
Hey Tom, just curious what oscilloscope you’re using there? Great video as always. Can’t wait to get my hands on the new Batumi

No probs! Let me know if I can help with any other questions. And yep, there’s a ribbon connector at the rear to connect them up.
Can each LFO have a different ASGN wave or do they all share the same wave shape?

Is the slew I’m hearing at 4:15 in the sequence or Batumi?
It’s part of the sequence coming out of Moskwa
Am I the only one that started singing Closer by NIN at @22:11 ? 🙂

I hate XAOC for doing all this version II stuff ... that could be quite expensive... Drezno II, now Batumi II. Thank god, it's not in stock yet
The new Batumi is showcased on a Behringer rack. That is what I call ironic!
