Beanie Bunnie Moo Moo | A very clever dual VCO!
The Beanie Bunnie Moo Moo is a Eurorack dual oscillator made by the Chinese designer and musician Jeanie. It consists of two identical analogue VCOs with through-zero FM, plus a noise source and a bunch of other smart features that open up a huge sound palette. It's a fantastic analogue patching playground!

ALM Busy Circuits MCO MkII | The ultimate compact modular voice?
Просмотров 6 тыс.28 дней назад
The MCO MkII from ALM Busy Circuits is a new version of the compact digital oscillator originally released back in 2018. But it’s so much more powerful that the ‘MkII’ tag doesn’t really do it justice. The original MCO is a great-sounding digital wavetable oscillator. The MkII adapts this sound engine and adds six more, along with an internal envelope, VCA, three LFOs, chord modes and user pres...
Xaoc Devices Lublin | Dual VCA with vactrol-style envelopes

Lublin, from Xaoc Devices, is a dual VCA with a difference. It has Ping inputs which model the behaviour of vactrols to create organic-sounding decay envelopes. You can create snappy plucked synth tones without needing a separate envelope generator, and the exponential decay curves mean it’s great for synthesising kick drums and percussive sounds. The envelopes only control the amplitude of the...
A deep dive with the Erica Synths Graphic Resonant Filterbank!

The Erica Synths Graphic Resonant Filterbank (FB) is a modern take on a cult classic of modular synthesis: the Serge Resonant EQ. The original design dates back to the late 70s, and it’s pretty simple - a bank of 10 manually controlled filter bands that can process sound sources in subtle or extreme ways. It can self-oscillate for complex drones, or you can ping it with pulses to create organic...

8 patch ideas for 8-step sequencers feat. Glasgow Synth Guild Oct Tone
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 месяца назад
Two and a half years ago I made a video about 8-step sequencer techniques which ended up being one of the most popular things on my channel. So when the Glasgow Synth Guild asked if I fancied making a video about their Oct Tone sequencer, I thought it would be a good opportunity to revisit the topic with 8 more patch ideas. A lot of the things I’m going to show you can be applied to any 8-step ...
3 cool Eurorack modules you might not know about

Putting synths and drum machines through the MFX Pedal from ALM Busy Circuits

How to patch a modular sequencer from basic building blocks

This is a patch with two voices playing relatively complex complementary melodies - but I’m not using a dedicated sequencer module to drive them. Instead, I’ve patched up a sequencer from scratch using a couple of voltage-controlled switches, a couple of clock dividers, a matrix mixer and a quantiser. All I need to feed in are a simple steady clock and a fixed offset voltage, and I get loveline...
Hieroglyphic Plume | Pulsar synthesis for Eurorack

Plume is the debut module from Hieroglyphic. It’s a digital oscillator based around pulsar synthesis, which is a fairly obscure technique devised by Curtis Roads in 2001, inspired by astronomical observations of neutron stars. your videos are always inspiring Tom Churchill. The creative sequencing ideas are out of the box and superb.
Thank you - glad you like them!
Very cool
Let me just slip in the fire techno track in to my demonstration here. Think I wouldn't notice that banger! Please tell me your fleshing that out and releasing it. Great video like really informative and good tunes and sounds. Subbed and liked.
Lovely patch!
Got me thinking about overtones too… lfo modulation or 2 or 3 overtones and feeding into a band pass (or bass ass) filter.
At 22:20 you said you are side chaining the kick, how did you do it?
I can’t remember tbh! It was nearly a year ago… I think I was probably just using a stock compressor in Ableton Live afterwards? It certainly wasn’t happening in the case on screen.
this is such a well thought out module. I have been interested in it since I first saw the BB demonstration on RUclips long long time ago. Happy to see more demonstrations now. Hope I one day can get my hands on one.
I miss the time when you used to focus on creativity and music. It separated you from all the other channels constantly trying to push new gear instead of helping people to do more with what they already have. Have you decided to solely publish paid promotions at this point?
That’s a fair question. I do intend to do more non-sponsored content in 2025 but the truth is I’ve committed to several videos for brands who approached me to work with them this year, so I have a few more things in the pipeline to finish before I can get back to that. I do like to think that even in my sponsored demo videos there is still at least some ‘creativity and music’ - I try to showcase patch ideas that work with gear people already have, or that might spark some inspiration. And I do try to be selective with the brands I work with - I’ll only feature something if I think it’s genuinely interesting (and at this point I have turned down many offers as a result). I’m sorry you don’t enjoy this content as much - unfortunately at this point I don’t think I’ll ever be able to make everyone happy. All I can say is I want to try to cover a variety of stuff on the channel in 2025, including a carefully considered selection of new gear demos for stuff I think is interesting, as well as non-module-specific techniques, patch breakdowns etc. Finally, just to point out that a lot of work goes into any videos I make, and the reality is that the sponsored ones are the only ones that compensate me for that time in any meaningful way. The other stuff is literally a labour of love, and often doesn’t perform as well, but it is more satisfying to make in a lot of ways, so I do want to do as much as I can given the finite amount of free time I have.
@ I’m sure you’re not featuring anything you don’t like, that would be really cynical. But making a game myself, and writing extensive devlogs that take me just about every minute of free time I have, I don’t do it in the mindset of making money, not even breaking even. I feel like I’m being compensated in a meaningful way, to use your own words, just because I love doing it, and some people seem to appreciate it. But anyway, not my place to tell you what to do. It won’t be for me though.
Also worth noting that exponential FM is common in a lot of places, but if you're more familiar with "FM synthesis," then you can think of exponential FM as what happens when someone fills your sugar bowl with salt. Might seem similar at first...
UGLIEST faceplate I’ve ever seen. Sounds good though.
I think I saw the thonk logo on the Data module? ruclips.net/video/rbch88ADSec/видео.html
Haha - I think you're right!
Looks very cool, I am guessing Jeanie likes This is not rocket science? 🎉
If it took up a lot more space in the rack I think I would have a better chance at making it work.
Thanks so much for the demonstration, really great job at explaining everything! 👍🏻
This module is on fire! Hope I can purchase it sometimes soon! Well done!
It looks and sounds awesome. Nice work.✌️⚡️👑
Dang it - I hate it when the manufacturers have these videos drip when the modules aren’t in stock yet - I would have Insta ordered - now not sure if my attention deficit will let me remember all this in several weeks or months time 🤷 will try to keep an eye on signal sounds

Beautiful instrument!
Nice to see this covered in more detail. Got one right away...but I do wish she would get this up on Modular Grid so I can fill the hole in my setup!
You can upload it to modulargrid yourself. I have uploaded some DIY modules I made in modular courses.
@@greencontact Looks like someone else has already done that, but I had to click the Other/Unknown box for it to show up. But HuHu and Tiny Tot are still missing. Would be best if she got her company registered on Modular Grid as a manufacturer.
it's up under "Show other/unknown"
This is truly a fab module, but seriously, does any one know where we can get it? It' seems it's been on "back order" forever... The beaniebunnie web-page also seems to be 404 now too :(
Arriving at Signal Sounds very soon! www.signalsounds.com/beanie-bunnie-moo-moo-eurorack-dual-oscillator-module
A very elegant design! Particularly love that both oscillators do TZFM at the same time as it's still relatively rare in complex oscillators
I feel like most people wouldn't consider this a complex oscillator because there is no folder (I think?) or modulation bus. Calling it a Dual VCO like they have makes more sense. Doesn't mean it isn't well designed or full featured just not that similar to the 259.
@Bata9999 it's true that there's no folder but there is a modulation bus in a sense, the output of the crossfader for each side is normalled to the TZFM of the other side. The crossfader can also allow you a similar (though not the same as folding) timbre parameter that fades from sine to a more harmonically rich wave so it can act a lot like a complex oscillator. Definitely true that it's not a 259 though, the closest I can think of to a 259 with tzfm is the Frap Tools Brenso but that only has it on one of the oscillators
Thank you for this, super helpful and informative...as always!
I thought that the main advantage of through-zero linear fm was to give stable pitch no matter how high the FM index was set to. If I remember correctly, all TZLFM oscillators I have seen so far maintained stable pitch. Am I wrong about this?
But some designers give you a bit more of range for more timbre, past this range the pitch it's less stable, but very useful for drones, etc...
It varies a bit depending on exactly how it’s implemented in analogue oscillators. I believe this one uses the SSI2130 VCO chip which is pretty popular these days. The pitch is pretty stable through most of the range, but this design does allow for quite extreme indexes, where the pitch loses stability a bit. It’s also more stable when the modulator is a lower frequency than the carrier. FWIW the Moo Moo behaves very much like the AtoV DHO (which also uses the 2130) but it’s different to the Dannysound EN129 and Instruo Neoni, which have their own circuit designs. It’s a bit of a can of worms and some of it’s over my head tbh, but I think if you want truly pitch-stable TZFM then you probably need to go digital.
@@deathofaraver exactly - it's great having that slightly more extreme range!
@@TomChurchillthe EN129 and most other TZFM VCOs that use discrete components vs dedicated ICs like the 2130 are all based on concepts from Electro Notes 129 and 75. Electro Notes was a sort of technical newsletter back in the day with contributors from all the great synth designers including Bob Moog, who is credited with the original concept behind these types of circuits. VCO cores may differ from module to module, but are often triangle core using OTA eg LM13700 or VCA chips like the 2164 but they will all employ some kind of analogue switching function to swap between standard and phase inverted modulation for positive and negative incoming voltage, respectively. This is the core principle behind TZFM and why it results in more stable pitch even at high FM depths vs exponential or regular linear FM. Negative modulation doesn’t stall the core because as I understand it, no negative voltage is applied because at the zero crossing the analogue switch flips to a phase inverted ie reversed, copy of the modulating signal so it’s essentially always positive. The standard/reversed wave gives the illusion of a true bipolar modulating input signal. Pretty neat trick 😅 I have a bit of an obsession with TZFM/PM VCOs and have built quite a few myself plus I also have an interest in electronic engineering and have studied the circuits and EN articles etc 😅
I have a Schlappi Three body in my system and being (an extremely well engineered) FGPA based ie digital VCO it is capable of very stable FM and PM even at very high index settings and or crazy cross modulation, significantly more so than the Generate 3, for example, which although equally well engineered is a 100% analog and therefore inherently less stable circuit. High FM/PM depth is more clangerous/atonal, especially without hard or soft syncing between the modulator and carrier modules.
Mooooo!
elongate the gate lol
Picking one up later today with the inertia. Great video that helped the decision process. Thank you! 🙏
Nicely done.
Amazing demo of a module that is easy to overlook. Really pairs well with Odessa.
at some point i want to get 2 of these Guild versions but for now I have got 2 of the Qubit versions, which seem to all intents and purposes identical in terms of functionality. would you be able to explain the differences between the qubit octone and the guild oct tone please?
I think that's probably a question for Jason Lim rather than me! All I really know is what he says in the manual: "This new “oct tōne” is something I’m very excited to present with my own signature front and centre, and with a vastly improved design [...] I deconstructed the original design files and rebuilt them from scratch with a new look and vastly improved hardware layout. The improvements go much deeper than just aesthetics and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying patching with this sequencer in my rack since the prototype." I don't think there are any major functional/feature differences, other than the fact that the GSG version has lost the Glide control from the Qu-bit version. I haven't used the Qu-bit version and I haven't used either version chained as a pair.
@@TomChurchill thanks Tom - I have dropped a line with the same question to Jason/Instruo/Guild - I hadn't really thought about the glide control (don't really use it or find it useful). I am currently playing with my Qubit Octones - right now. I agree, fantastic sequencer(s). I followed Jason's guide on the official Guild/Oct Tone video and so far have been able to replicate pretty much everything step by step. Nevertheless, I still want to get the new version one of these days. Thank you for responding :-)

Wow just found this now so I am late to the party but this sounds fantastic. Great video and explanation of how you get the sounds. So deep and rich, nothing cliche about making great music. I could listen it to hours as well. I think I need to get the DivKid modules ... thank you for making this. Always amazes how little you need to make some great modular patches.
Hi ! Thanks for the video. I have a question regarding your Pam sequence at 14"50. How do you make your pitch sequence change from one measure to the next? Thank you so much
It’s a combination of two things - a four-note sequence from the Xaoc Tirana, clocked by a x1 output from Pam’s, and a slower 50% square from Pam’s at 12% level (quantised internally), set to /8. I combine them in a precision adder so the Pam’s output transposes the Tirana sequence on alternate cycles.

Finally ordered a DAC thanks to your video Tom. Been after a module like this for ages but have been putting it off. Can’t wait to rack it up. Tools sometimes get overlooked. They are the building blocks of modular and what makes it so much fun for us nutters. 😂
When is this available in store?
The first batch was available on Monday 2 Dec; they sold out pretty quickly in most places. The second batch should hit stores in late January. You can pre-order one at Signal Sounds: www.signalsounds.com/alm-busy-circuits-mco-mk2-eurorack-compact-multi-oscillator-module/
I love digital VCOs, and this sounds great! 20 bucks in VCV 🤔 I may have to buy it, but the VCV version of MFX is still buggy so I'm just waiting to see if it works OK. Would need the expanders working properly to make it useful. Nice demo of the hardware anyway 👌
