One of the more appealing aspects of my Triumph is the consideration the engineers in Hinckley, Leicestershire put into making the oil changes effortless. Much like your Harley, the drain plug is on the lowest part of the sump when the bike is on its side stand, and the oil filter placement means it can be removed and replaced without creating a mess rivaling the Exxon Valdez incident. I also like that the engine, transmission and clutch all share a common sump, so when one gets changed, they all get changed. The large capacity also ensures that at any given time there is more oil running through the cooler and sump than there is in the workings, meaning a cooler running bike.
Hi Del, interesting to hear your comments about the torque setting range. In the late 90`s, i worked on the trians for a year and a half installing air conditioning systems to the drivers cabs. To be able to work in the rail depot, we had to do induction courses, and instructional courses. One of the courses was a "Torque tightening" course, which said about the legalities of installing nuts and bolts on commercial and public transport system. One of the things we were told was that you should NOT use any lubricant on nuts and bolts (unless strictly specified or applied by the manufacturers) because it makes tightening the items too easily, which can cause the bolts to stretch under lower torque settings. So to hear your comment brought back memories. I can well understand your expression when you undid the oil filter, way way too over tight.
Different applications require different solutions.. often you need to apply some form of substance to a thread for it's own good.. 'anti-sieze', 'threadlock' etc.. and they're all in liquid form to begin with, so yeah, an alteration in the torque setting is important.. specially on fragile threads !!
Delboy's Garage.. Awesome video. I did a Harley Davidson Electra-Glide one time and the dang filter was tight I broke a 3 jaw filter wrench and had to the same as you in this video. I mean that filter was way too tight if the 3 jaw filter wrench broke before the filter came loose.. Some people need to read a service manual before they work on bikes and then some people shouldn't be working on bikes. Thanks for sharing this.
Sure thing buddy, there are some clever tool for getting filters off, but in the end the law of physics will be the final restrictor, it's a soft and fragile tin can with no strength, being asked to turn on a superfine thread that's over tightened!... even those fancy ones with a 3/4 hex head on them, I've torn them completely out of the can, which is quite disappointing lol In the end, the grips always work and the good old rubber strap trick if you have the space! Oh and there's my other beef... if it's not hard enough, they put them in a location where you can't get your flipping hands round them!
Hi Penny and Del - Great video! When I was a teenager I had a great job at an oil change business... wonderful for someone who liked cars as much as I did. But we sure did get some stories out of the oil filters - those that were way too tight and those that were in incredibly hard to reach places. Probably the easiest was the RX-7 - right on top of the engine and very accessible! But I digress... always fascinating to watch you at work. Take care, my friends. Be well and ride safe!
Sounds like fond memories mate.. we all remember those jobs we enjoyed in our youth.. Thank you for your kind support as always buddy.. take care and enjoy your week. D&Px
Good to see you on the Dyna, that should be a bulletproof engine ay Del. Your 3 hole fluid change for Softails is one of my favorites, especially purging all the old oil out -- great tip I reckon, . In Cyprus at the moment, hellish hot here , high 30s, so have been hydrating with lots of local beer -- lovel people. Hi to Lady Penelope, enjoy your weekend, hope you're out on the Dyna. When I was watching the video, the missus was squeaking " Hi Del " xx 😉👍👍
Thanks 👍Hi Geoff.. not envious at all, haven't been abroad in too many years.. but we are having some nice summer weather here at home to be fair.. Have fun mate, and remember the beer is cleaner than the water on some placed..so good move lol!
Good ole' manual work, since no one has developped an app for oil and filter change ;-) Gotta watch a batch of your videos, since I've been away for two weeks. Beta Alping on the steep slopes of Lake Iseo was amazing again. All the best, Günter/Nürnberg
No one warned me off Harley Davidson KNUCKLEHEAD engineer's design deficiency regarding the cam chain tensioner and it let loose with 17,000 miles on the bike needing a total breakdown. The Harley dealer refused to do the work because its technicians are not trained to work on the old Twin Cam engine design. Harley never gets it right and they move on to the next generation of the engine without getting the old one right. I had to locate an experienced technician to pull the entire engine apart and install the aftermarket hydraulic tensioning system Harley should have designed in the first place. I had the cams upgraded which produced more power and better throttle response throughout the entire rpm range making more power than stock. I don't believe the technician did anything to my crankshaft and now I'm worried that will let loose. I still have only 26,000 miles on the my FXDX, hopefully this bike will outlast me at 68 years old. I'm not surprised to learn about these design deficiencies because HD has a long history of producing garbage when AMF owned the company and I used to laugh at Harley's broken down on the side of the road while I rode by on my Suzuki GS 750E and then my GS 1100E which had much better engineering. I would trade my piece of shit for one if iI could find one still running and spare parts were available. Nothing shakes and vibrates like a Harley and that is why women love riding on them. I had to use blue Loctite to keep the fasteners from backing off. What can I say other than Americans make GARBAGE and try to compensate with BULLSHIT marketing and advertising. This bike is made to ride slow and mellow and with the forward controls I can stretch my legs out and my back is straight thanks to the seating position. What the hell. it's a 1999 and is a dinosaur. My exwife threw out the shop manual. Thanks Del for pointing out which plug drains the oil. I might have drained the transmission by accident.
I picked up an '02 FXD about a year and a half ago. Had to do the tensioners. Used a complete S&S camchest kit. You missed a perfect opportunity to explain about the oil coming out really slow which means your breathers are in good shape. Nice bike, what year is that one?
Hi mate, good point well made, it's a 98 registered, 99 model... so real early one, same as yours though and yes, slow drain can indicate breathing issues, but the breathers themselves never really block as much as the air filter does... the slow drain on this highlighted that the air filter is horribly blocked up and that'll be in a video to come soon!

Hey Del, I’ve been watching you since 2015. Thank you doe all your videos. Everything I think “ what the hell is he doing ?” It all makes sense. But my q for you today is every time I watch a video I hear a “chirp “. It’s made me check my smoke detectors LOL!!! It’s not the intros that you do with the birds. It really sounds like a bad battery in a smoke detector. LOL!!! Anyways. Thank you for all you do.
Hi mate, thanks so much for your long term support... the intro reel was a sound bite recording outside the unit one Spring morning a few years ago... we're surrounded by song birds, our unit's on a farm site, so full on countryside and the birds are always busy... so what you're probably hearing is those same birds with their daily chatter, always cheering us along with a happy song!
Hey great videos love these... question I recently bought a 2006 Dyna fuel injected seams to idle way to high how would I turn that idle down thanks so much
On fuel injected Harleys you don't! The idle speed is fixed by the ECU... there are piggy back devices you can buy I believe, but I wouldn't recommend it... a slow idle on a later model Harley can cause problems.
@@Moonfleet41 ok thanks ...what about that idle screw that stops the throttle cables it looks threaded on the back of the carburetor body bottom right.thanks again
I would agree but there was little if any debris on the sump plug magnet and apparently there was no shiny bits in oil, probably had the correct oil engine flushes when rebuilt. If you had gone to the trouble of rebuilding and moding🎉 the engine, would sure hope that would have been done as part of the rebuild.
I didn't hear Del saying anything regarding bottom end rebuild, but cams and tensioner. If pistons and rings are the same there's no reason to change the oil every 1000 miles.
Pavel Lipski Such a shame you didn't listen Pavel.. i did make it quite clear that the motor had suffered a twisted crank... and that had been fully rebuilt.. so Obviously a bottom end rebuild.. check again.. 1:33 Obviously the rebuilt motor had the double heat cycle and oil flush, then another oil change at 500... This is the next oil change after that..!

Why do so many people He-Man the drain plugs back on? I've got a stripped allen drain plug on my Victory (all Victorys use allen head drain plugs) the previous owner went all ham on. Ridiculous. Most plugs are around the 15lb/ft torque range which is literally one handed for a grown man aka not that much!
@@shameless6963 neither of my bikes takes what is in the manual either. With a filter change my Pan Euro is supposed to take 3.8 L and it takes 4.2 or so to put it on the fill line. My ZX9 takes slightly more as well. Can’t recall exactly at the moment.
Hello! Sorry to bother you, but maybe you could help me... I'm trying to sell the original seat from my 2004 Wide Glide and someone asked if it would fit in a 2011 WG... Do you know that? Where could I check that? Thank so much for your work!!
I would not know this having never done it myself.. but if you measure between your front hook on the frame, and the screw hole on the fender....if the buyers measurement is the same then it's likely it will fit.. maybe offer them a return / refund if it's no good.! just a thought !
Great video Del! Hello from the USA. Quick question from an amateur 1/2 weekend mechanic. Lol. Do you subtract the amount of oil you pour in the filter from what you pour directly into the engine?
Yes, I have a 2008 H-D Dyna 96 ci. My engine rquires 2.5 quarts of oil with an oil filter. So yes it is only 2.5 quarts and you will subtract the oil in the new filter from the 2.5 quarts going into the engine. My transmission is 1 qt. The primary case is 1 qt.
Hi James, quite rightly as Bill said, the 2.5 quarts quantity is total including the filter... personally I don't get too fussy about it, I fill the filter and throw it on, then put 2 quarts in the engine and check the level, it'll be a little low, but it will be on the stick... just run the motor for maybe 30 seconds to purge any air out the system, then measure it... the level's critical more than the quantity (as you may not have got all of the old oil out, depending on how thick it still is, there's always an amount of 'cling' to internal parts)... and of course the final check is when the motor's hot as you'll know.
For the primary and gearbox I will be, as have plenty of stock left (the Amsoil gear oil is spuberb), but I've upgraded to this engine oil, it's a 20W60 formulation, a little better in this hot weather... a suitable replacement as I've run out of Amsoil engine oil at the moment.
I had that same engine in a Road King. I put a bunch of miles on it and never had a lick of trouble with it but heard all the horror stories about that then newfangled twin cam 88. I guess it's the luck of the draw. Your shop is looking a bit like a HD dealership this week.😁 Thanks for always showing the RIGHT way to do things. Blessings to you and Penny. ❤👍👍
