The Outsider: Brian Sewell

- In his memoir of his early years, The Outsider, Brian Sewell, the famously acerbic art critic and connoisseur, opens up about his ramshackle childhood and his sexual awakening. Brought up by a single, rackety mother (he discovered the identity of his father in his 50s), passionate about art from an early age, he was educated at the Courtauld Institute by Anthony Blunt (whom he later hid from the press after his exposure as the 'fourth man'). Formative National Service experiences, a chaotic period at Christie's, sexual promiscuity in the 60s, all make The Outsider a graphic read.
Wonderful talk - ghastly photo sequence.
Brian was a national treasure! I'm just reading The Outsider books.
Brian died on my birthday. That voice will be sadly missed.
Sadly missed. Brought a lot of humour and laughter into my life.
RIP Brian.
Brilliant, honest and correct...I love it!
More Sewell please. Much more.
just discovered
Mr Sewell, he's a genius!
Sorry to correct your grammar, but I think you mean 'than like what the queen does'. ;)
I've seen Brian three times now; once talking about his life, career, dogs, cars and heart attacks, last year speaking about the importance of teaching the history of art, and this year with Sir Roy Strong in Winchester, speaking about all kinds of things. He's a fascinating speaker, forthright, interesting and relentlessy honest.
The Outsider Vol 2 is out now, and a book about his dogs is on the way.
Thanks for this, very interesting but a shame it was cut short.
As a Jackson Pollock fan I was amused when he described 'blue poles' as... a nice linoleum.
My hero. Can anyone supply us with the letter to The Evening Standard demanding his resignation as art critic? Can't find it anywhere!
Brian speaks posher than what the Queen does.
Thank you so much
Still great
A mentor us all.
he's at the Cheltenham liteary festival this weekend....
I want an appointment with that Dr Lemon Tarney 5:23
I also forgot to put an apostrophe in "does".
Have just found part 2.
Sadly missed.
Here's a picture of an white pelted Pine Marten. They are not all dark brown with big fox-like ears. www.coniferousforest.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/White-Pine-Marten.jpg
:-)
Interesting to me how Sewell always considered himself an outsider, I'd have thought his aristocracy would've not given the man any real sense of this.
he's not from the aristocracy
Next time you must get a close up of the cute black girl. Our future depends on it.
Self-indulgent ramble. Quite dull. A pity Sewell owed his success to his camp entertainment value rather than any brilliance as an art historian or connoisseur.
For someone who hates him so much, you seem to spend a lot of your free time watching and commenting on videos that feature him. Every Brian video I've watched on RUclips has your comments underneath - sometimes multiple times. Obsessed! He's dead and loved by many, get over it. Did he critique your art once and burst your postmodern bubble? If so, you clearly never recovered.
