  • I remember swapping my Audi A6 Avant for this Volvo S60 and it was the best car move I ever made. In this video, I will tell you why it's been the best car I've ever bought and why as a used car buy, I believe it offers incredible value and never got the credit it deserved.
Thanks to www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music for the royalty free music used in this video!

I had a V60 D5 (manual). The D5 engine gets a lot of negativity about being gruff and loud etc, however I currently own a V40 D4 manual and I can say hands down the D5 is the better engine by a long way. Smoother, quieter, far nicer to drive, and contrary to what people say the fuel economy on my manual D5 was on par with my current V40. Back to the V60, the best car I've ever owned. Drove across Europe several times, so comfortable. Long distance cruiser absolutely. Looks amazing with 19" Volvo BOR alloys. The older generation Volvo S60 and V60 get very mediocre reviews from some professional reviewers but look at owner reviews on Autotrader to get a better understanding of how much they are loved by actual owners, not just someone who is testing one and comparing it against the typical German fare. I agree with the review, they may not be as swanky as an Audi and BMW but they are just as premium and as an everyday car or long-distance cruiser, unbeatable.

S60 D5 R Design owner here. Couldn't agree more. Owned loads of second hand cars and I just can't bring myself to sell mine. With the anti roll bar and stiffer suspension it's even pretty chuckable around bends. Just gone past 171'000 and obviously I've changed parts due to wear and tear but it drives like new with not a single rattle to be heard.
The only gripe I do have is the position of the fog light switches as you have to look around the steering wheel to see them which isn't ideal if you're driving in fog.
Other than that I honestly don't have a negative thing to say about it. In Metallic Copper and with low profile tires it still draws looks and comments which for a decade old Volvo saloon is pretty insane. I've often thought about going for the Maxton Bodykit for this car but I also just like it the way it is.

I have a 2018 S60 Cross Country, very similar to yours. I got the Polestar tuning from a dealer last year, after having the car for several years. I agree with you on the major plus points about the car. The seat is very nice, but you have to adjust it to fit your seating position. I do have a heated steering wheel in mine! Also, I agree that one of the downsides is the boot/trunk. It's small.
You brought up the point how everything in the infotainment can be reached via the thumb wheel, and it's great. However, in the next gen after this one, they went to a touch screen. It's not bad. They did put thought into making it useable without being too fiddly.
Came across your vid via the FB Volvo group. Love hearing people enjoying their Volvos.

2013 V60 D5 R-Design LUX NAV Owner here; i like how the two things you turned off are the same things i did with mine; they just don't work right, but all the other stuff i leave on :D - I would in future avoid r-design spec due to how stiff its setup; get se lux etc and get it specd up :)
There very little to complain about in real terms, yes the info system is showing its age, but it works and is still for the nav getting map updates. The boot on the V60 is only 430L which in estate land is small; the newer 2018+ V60's have a far better boot but are not a Volvo to me.

I'm at 9.4 litres per 100 kms. But I think that is mostly due to the previous owner. I only really push it when i need to pass. That's not too bad for the ability to pass instantly when you got a slow poke in front. And the sound of the inline 6 is a treat! I once passed 9 cars in one go to get to the head of the line of a slow train. Don't worry, it was a long downhill followed by an uphill with plenty of visibility for any potential oncoming traffic. But as Max Verstappen once said, heartbeat went a little higher there!

Yes, the seller sold his car because of ULEZ. Usually, no one sells a good Volvo S60. I spent six months searching for a well-maintained Volvo on the market, but unfortunately, I couldn't find one. He loved his car so much that he didn't want to sell it to an inexperienced owner. When I saw his car, I agreed to pay the full price without asking for offers, even though the car had a few scratches. It had just 70,000 miles on board, a full service history, and recently had the timing belt and gearbox oil replaced. He told me that whenever someone pointed out scratches, he immediately closed the bonnet and said goodbye to those customers. So my suggestion is, when you find a good Volvo, remember that you buy from serious individuals who don't entertain amateurs pointing out scratches and asking for a lower price. Volvo fans will sell their cars to fellow enthusiasts, and I plan to do the same if I sell my Volvo

It still has the old design so no. If I buy a 2017 volvo car I am expecting to get the new version.
Turbo lag is something that most of them have it is a common problem for a Volvo. When it passes around 3.5k rpm it pulls.

Some of the Volvo models were refreshed by 2017, but not this one. Turbo lag hasn't been a deal-breaker for me, personally.

Stage 1 on D4 give you 270hp because its the same engine as D5, and stage 1 is cheaper then Polestar.

Best used car I ever bought was a V70 D5 2005 which I drove for almost 500000 km. I eventually traded it in voor a V70 2.0t r-design thanks to the morons at VW who f*cked it up diesel users.

Looks - so so, boot and rear seat space are just laughable. No climate control in the back, and the interior looks cheap. Really don't understand why are you so excited about this car. Would choose BMW 3, A4, or C class any day of the week. Especially since the price is close.

    • @car_babble

Thanks for the comment. Looks are subjective, rear seat space is fine for me so maybe you are hauling bigger people than I have been? I don't agree the interior looks cheap. Dated, perhaps, but not cheap. What excites me about this car is the performance from the 2litre diesel and especially the torque, the technology that works (adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise etc), awesome standard sound system and the best seats of any car I have been in. For me, if handling isn't your main concern, it competes with the Germans and exceeds them in quite a few ways.

You'll be spending at least the double amount of money keeping the old german cars on the road but hey, climate control in the back is really worth it..
