UE5 is really game changer and recreating this city using Nanite and Lumen has been awesome.
I know you guys have waited for long, thank you for your love, support and patience.
In the meantime, if you cannot wait, check my Instagram/Artstation for a breakdown of this that I did for 80 LV in an article.
EDIT: The short WON the @KitBash3D Neon Nights contest and came second in the in-motion category! So happyy!!!!
kitbash3d.com/...
Here is my official entry to the Kitbash3D's #KB3Dcontest. I picked the negative prompt as it is very enticing to design a futuristic dystopia with its roots in cyberpunk genre. However I chose to root the future world in some sense of realism both visually and thematically. Sure it is a future with floating holographic commercials but not everything is future tech. There are no flying cars, no robots, no augmented people, no promises of a golden future in this 'not so distant' world. Instead what we are left with is a sprawling urban jungle of cold glass and steel. A jungle where every structure wants to be taller than the next, a city where the night begins even before the sun has even set. A hard place for people trying to live an honest living but a haven for those who would like to paint the night away with their neon sins.
_________
TECH TALK:
The short was created in Unreal Engine 4. I am currently trying to learn the software and having learned the power of dynamic lighting, raytracing global illumination, reflections and shadows, I wanted to push these as far as my machine could take. Coming from a VFX background, UE has always been looked upon as something that can't compete and produce results like many offline renderers like Redshift, Octane, Vray etc. Having the RTX raytracing tech in a game engine definitely make UE a very viable solution for doing realistic lighting. This was the goal I wanted to reach that after seeing the final result, one shouldn't be able to tell if it was rendered in UE or offline. Having said that, since raytracing is still a fairly new tech, in order to get smooth, non-grainy renders, I had to bump up the settings pretty high to a point where the project was not real time. UE still rendered it at blazing fast speeds. Many of the long panning shots to show the scale of the city were over 700 frames long. In an offline renderer, wanting to render such crazy complex geometry, material and light setups for 700 frames would definitely take couple days of non stop rendering. UE on the other hand, did it in less than 30 minutes on a single 2080Ti GPU.
OH, and did I mention this was rendered at 4K. Unfortunately Nuke, the software I composite my work in has resolution restriction of 1080p in their free non commercial version so the final video ended up scaled down, otherwise it would have been done in its 4K glory!
I sincerely hope EPIC continues to upgrade raytracing tech and pushing UE4 to be a solid contender for high fidelity photorealistic visuals! I can only imagine the power that UE5 will have since it can do all this even faster! Also I am glad that their community is such a help as many things you can look up and learn quickly!

Haha thank you so much for that compliment! Means a lot to hear kind words of encouragement!
Fantastic, the atmosphere, all the details, the movie setup. Great work
Thanks man! I checked your channel out and saw your cool work and subbed! :)
great short - visuals and music going hand in hand. would love to see the feature film...
Thank you for those kind words, made my day! ❤️
I know nothing about film making or the mediums/tools used, but I know breathtaking, when I experience it.
The exquisite detail is astonishing and I Iook foward seeing your future works!
WOW! Fantastic.....I bet it would be very beautiful to look at, but hellish to live in...I think you showing the riots at the end was an inclination of that....
Thank you! Good catch, yeah that was one of the reasons for adding the riot scene, it adds contrast to the beautiful visuals of the city by showing the discontent of the people.
All this time and effort, it looks great. I've seen dozens of videos with the ballerina in it and to this date I still can't find out where to get that asset lol. I love how you have the traffic system working. Wonder if you have thought of making something siilar in UE5
Yes! The Epic Games course that this is based on where I showcase how to build this exact thing from scratch is almost here after year's of work. It shows all the steps in detail, I recorded like 10 hours of content 😂
I have looked at this so many times and I still find so many nuanced details .Absolutely stunning work man !!
Aw man, thanks sid, that makes my day! Thank you for the support!
Absolutely amazing, I love it .
I appreciate the kind words, thank you!
very very cool! so realistic ! great job !
Thank you so much!
My Goodness, this is surreal!! Absolutely love it 😍.
That makes my day!
Correction: this is UNREAL 😅
The force is strong with this one :) Well done.
Thank you so much!
Damn, yo! That was awesome!
Thank you so much Jonathan! Glad you like it!
This is incredible work, and right when i decided to start studying Unreal.. inspiring. Like all the others, would really enjoy a behind the scenes ! Congrats
Thanks Marco! I am thankful for the kind words!
Absolutely stunning 😍. This looked way too good. I want to make a cyber city like this.
That made my day! Thank you for the kind words, an entire course around this is in the works so eventually you can make one too!
This is so very impressive, the scale and the detail is out of this world. Really. The only 1 thing is a stuttering or jittery play at certain time frames. I am playing your video on a 2080TI ! - But Holly Smokes this is an outstanding piece of work.
I have heard this before. For some reason it doesn't stutter on my end, I wonder if I encoded the video at a very high bitrate?
Glad you liked it!
Jesus Christ you are by far the most underrated channel in RUclips. Damn this is good.
I could watch this all day and find new details in it.
This genuinely made my day! Thank you kind sir!
Stunning work, I love the big heat hazy Sun at the start, I'd totally pay for a tutorial on how you did that 😆, so much detail in the city also 🙌🏻
Tutorial is in the making, will be dropping soon so sub if you haven't and you will get notified! Thanks!
wow what a huge project, awesome

@Sullivan Franklin Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.

@Sullivan Franklin It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
Amazing!! Very inspiring Indy!! Please do a tutorial of workflow if possible.
Thanks a lot man! Planning on doing it if I am featured on the UE spotlight! :)
I'm just now learning Unreal after ten years as a Blender filmmaker.
All I can say is, this is SUPERB!
I hope I can pull off something this beautiful someday.
It is never too late to learn! You can do it too, my free UE course currently in progress takes you through step by step on how you can do it! More in description. :)
@@IndyStry Hey you rock! A big thanks for the encouragement, and your course sounds very interesting. I'm currently watching any tutorial I can get my hands on about Blueprints and Unreal in general, so I will definitely check out your course. Thank you again!
What I wanted Cities Skylines 2 to look like lmao
haha, that would be nice :P
The true art
Thank you!
Man this looks phenomenal. You for sure have a future in the film industry.
Thank you for giving such a stunning opening track! I am so glad people like you are out there giving away royalty free music to creators like us! I hope you make it big too in the music industry! Here's to hoping this is one of the many such future collaborations between us!
@@IndyStry Thank you. And definitely let me know if you need custom music in the future. I would love to work with you.
@@EonSound Will do buddy!
Amazing work.
Thank you!
This is awesome! I really love the close up shots. In a beginner in 3d modeling , I have more experience compositing with nuke but I’m currently teaching myself c4d . You modeled and animated everything ? Or this is more of creating an environment with already created assets ? Because WOW 😍. I’m really interested in learning UE4 after this . Since I can’t model at all but I can probably use assets to compositing something
Thank you! I didn't model anything, I did texture all the building lights, the ground city and the video assets to be dropped around the city as holograms/billboards. The models of the buildings are from Kitbash3D's free kit called Neo City. It is free for a short time so don't forget to grab it! The good thing of working in UE is getting access to the entire Megascans library that helps a lot with pre-made assets so you can spend more time making worlds rather than doing the tiny details. (not that there is anything wrong with that :P)
Indy that's really really awesome details u put into it...I thoroughly enjoyed it...but how did u manage to render those details in such a short time in unreal??
Please tell me I wasn't the only one thinking that this could be an excellent base for a Blade Runner videogame. This is awesome.
I am honored to hear that!
Ya un proyecto en desarrollo con esa misma idea. Se llama Vigilance 2099.
It looks amazing brother. Wow! the amount of detail you have added in this, is insane. Keep inspiring!
Thank you so much Shivam for your continuous support! :)
Nice work.
UE just keeps getting better and better, offline renderers will be redundant in a few years if it continues like this.
Thanks! And I cannot wait for a future like that!
I suspect UE5 will complete the transformation.
@@sagii86 Yeah, looking forward to that ;)
@@sagii86 Can't wait for UE5 to release, it is gonna send big waves through the industry
Amazing. Beautiful. Inspiring.
Glad you think so!
Very impressive and awesome work here !
I hope for you that Epic will feature your work in the next Spotlights ! It really deserves it :)
I am also interested and learning Unreal as render alternative for VFX/Freelancing productions.
Have you used Houdini to create this city ? Is it procedurally created or did you mostly made the scene dressing manually ?
I would definitely love to see a breakdown of your project !
Thanks man! I hope so too that it gets featured in the spotlight! The city was painted as foliage in UE then custom adjusted to make it more city like. All the lights and billboards and neons were hand placed. A making of is in the works if I get onto the UE spotlight! 😊 so please do share it and tag them!
@@IndyStry Wow placing all those by hands was very rewarding ! Love the final result ! :)
Thank you I’m on your art station now. When I get home I can get a good look at it
Thanks!
So nice 🎉
Great 👌, Inspiring and awesome.
Nice to see you here Siraj, thanks !
awesome work !!! how did you achieve the hologram textures, those are looking great
They are all image sequences, will show more in the breakdown coming up!
Fantastic music, absolutely glorious !! Love it 👍
Goodness..... this is simply breathtaking. I just saw your 2022 update that you're posting a tut soon. Any time frame? soon as in a week? or soon as in 6 months? This video is wild and I love that you told us what it was rendered on. Thank you.
Thank you for the love and support! Yes, I finished pre-production on the course, currently recording the modules. The course is slated to launch within the next few months on Epic Games' Unreal Online Learning platform. I will make a video announcing it on my channel when it drops. Thank you for your patience!
Underrated

Beautiful, can you please drop down some unreal engine tutorials?
Thanks! I am planning on it in the future along with a possible breakdown of this short, subscribe so you don't miss out!
HOLY SHIT! This is amazing! Also, are those neon signs and holograms emitting light? To my knowledge UE4 dont quite "emit" actual light from meshes, or did you use other workarounds to achieve that effect?
There is an emissive plane and a light on top of each other for bigger holograms. For smaller ones its just a plane with emissive texture. More in the breakdown coming up. :)
amazing
Man!! So amped for tutorial! Do you know when it will be released officially?? 😮
It is a full course with over 10 hours of content, last I checked so it is being edited by Epic Games. They said it will be ready any day just final checks happening before it gets announced!

@@SandeepTogarathi I did tweet twice twitter.com/indystryfilms/status/1328165082547752962
They just don't seem to notice. Even posted on the forums which is their main source of spotlight. Nothing. Sigh. 😕
Jawdropping! How did you create the geos for the environment? What about the animations? This didn't go through any compositing software? This is straight out of unreal?
Building geometry was provided by Kitbash3D as a part of their Neo City free kit on their website. Grab it before it is gone! Car and people animations were royalty free footages that I credited in the description, the harder part was getting them integrated in UE as it isn't exactly streamlined for that kind of process. For compositing I used Nuke. I am a compositor by profession so almost all my work goes through Nuke but the 3D is directly out of unreal. In Nuke I only did basic CC and lens effects like glows and all. Everything else is as you see fresh from UE.
@@IndyStry @IndyStry Thanks so much for the reply. It's stunning really! So you didn't render out passes from unreal? Just a beauty? That's nuts. Out of curiosity, did you export an FBX to help with comp? I'm a compositor too. I do some nuke but my bread and butter is flame. Again, jawdropping! I'll check out those free assets!
@@jaimeaguirre4424 I wanted to render out passes but UE 4.25 isn't exactly friendly about rendering passes. You can render some basic ones but even they were not really useful. So i rendered the final composited image out and it worked good enough. Note though, 4.26 will be having a lot more render passes support with things like objectIDs, world position etc which I am really looking forward to.
This is incredible!
Thanks man! :)
ufff
it was just tooo good
Thank you so much!
Great work, very atmospheric! Not the city I'd like to live in.
One note: during slow panoramic motion (0:56 - 1:07, 1:34 - 1:41) I feel some kind of stattering... "lack of smoothnes" of the image motion. Maybe it's something specific to 24FPS on my screen (I'll try to watch it on TV later) or maybe it needs a little bit of motion blur...
Haha, indeed not the most ideal city to live in irl. I am not noticing anything on my desktop, could be a frame sync issue... :|
how was the traffic done in this scene? Great Work.
Gonna explain that in detail in an upcoming breakdown. More info in the video description. Thanks!
Was I the only one expecting to see Kaneda, Tetsuo, and Yamagata tearing through the streets on their bikes, or was that just me?

Massive and filled with life. Amazing 🌃
Meanwhile when I try to make something after creating 10-15 Assets I'm done ..............................like i hardly completed any scene and for this type of short film man..... need some big balls XD
Haha thanks man! I totally understand that feeling. It is hard to stay motivated when you do larger scale projects like this. I go through that feeling too. But I remember this quote I read, "never forget how badly you once wanted what you have now!" And it motivates me to finish it. One step at a time, keep building, soon you will have a world! 😊

No other 3D programs were used, just UE.
Nice! Shout out to the Zoya the Destroya cameo!
Hey! Good catch! Many more tiny Easter eggs hidden in there!
Loving your work. I'm doing something similar for a short film and wondered how you did the building lights. You seem to have used small point light sources inside the building meshes rather than emissive textures to get sharper results. Is this right?
Hey Josh, apologies for missing out the comment. Building windows are emissive textures and there are larger rect lights with textures in them.
