i think the 996.1 is the better car, smaller engine yes, but it has a much smoother acceleration curve and the early cars with cable throttle are the best. I also prefer the headlights on the 996.1. For the only thing the 996.2 has that I would find handy is the glovebox, but I can live ok with out that, 996.1 for me, that 3.4 is the sweetest engine, better IMS and less prone to bore score.
I don't think that's right with the acceleration, the 996.2 has variocam plus that gives you just about the smoothest acceleration with torque through the whole rev range with consistent torque the 996.1 though has variocam which helps its rather lacklustre in the lower revs and you really have to keep those revs high to keep it spirited and not sluggish. I say this as someone who owned both cars generations in there 996 form as well as the boxsters of the same generations.
@@JAYREADhey dude you made a really good 911 for it’s time it was really good yes it may have took a all the Boxster parts SO WHAT at least not all the parts Are from the porsche boxster but you really made very good car since they where bankrupt and now I just dream to have one every day
I have one of each, a 99 C2, and an 03 modified Turbo. I prefer the 99 out of the two. There is something beautiful in its simplicity 👌🏼 When the 991 first came out, I drove it down to Porsche to test drive one. And as I drove home, my old C2 gave me more pleasure then the brand new version. Fantastic cars, and ridiculous value!
@@henryatkinson1479 - 2004/2005 997 doesn’t need it neither, as "closed engine" first came for MY 2006 ... Right now replacing mine on my 996 C4S, unfortunately had to dismantle engine cause mine is tiptronic. Old bearing like new at 138k km.
A few years back I hated all 996’s I didn’t like the lights or the interior which I felt was too plastic. However over the years I’ve actually come to like the car including the lights. It’s a great car, still not sure about the interior though? It’s no surprise the 996 owners think it’s the best thing since eggs and bacon, well just eggs in this case😂 It is a good car and that’s from someone who doesn’t own one.
996.1's built in 98 are the cars to have. It's the purest 911. The bad publicity it received plus its profitability caused Porsche to stumble and abandon it too soon insuring its classic nature. After 1999 came drive by wire, smaller IMS, bore scoring, the 997 replete with many peeling paint buttons on the dash, and universally heavier 911's with nonsensical amounts of hp. Drove the 992 with ridiculous screens and decided it's not a 911, so spent my money on three cars instead: NSX, S2000 and 1999 C2 996. Got way more fun for the funds. Of those cars I was surprised to see the 996.1 is the go to car for daily fun. Decades of undeserved bashing means they're still way cheaper than a 964, but not for long. Get yours now and make sure it's a 99.
Great reply and 100% agree...NSX, great car! owned a 94' in 96'...jus bought an early 00' which is a 99 and wouldn't dream of trading for a .2 Give me analog or give me... not another 928!
I like what you guys did. You guys should try to do it simultaneously where you each get time to make your arguments and let your viewers judge who made the compelling argument, the winner.
996.1 C2 manual for the win...perhaps biased by owning one. I inherited the car in a semi-project condition, the previous owner had disassembled it to replace the IMS bearing and never finished. Sadly for him, the bearing was perfect, but he'd been scared into replacing it. I thought I'd drive it for a couple weeks, get bored and sell it. The more I drive it the harder it is to convince myself that I don't need it.
As long as he is driving an automatic he is no real indication. I bought a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport. What a machine, what an engine. If I am lucky, the prices will even rise in the future 😎
I love my 996.1! But another thing to mention is the 996.1 is lighter! Closer to ~2901 compared to the 996.2 at ~2959lbs. Not a huge difference, but lighter nonetheless, I’ll keep my fried eggs.
Hey red guy, what are your thoughts about the 992 generation for a collector point of view..? I own a 997.2 tts and 991.2 tt and don’t know if buy a 992.1 right now or wait to the facelift 992.2. Which would be the one to go!? Regards!
Hard to tell. We are only a year into the cycle. Strikes me, however, that it’s just a more modern version of the 991 so far. I often call the 997.1 the 996.3 and the 992 is really the 991.3… so far.
I do appreciate the analog, and the IMS dual makes a big diff...but if your lucky enough to drive either (I am) then you are doing something right...now there are those who poo-poo Porsche and I say to you... PORSCHE, there is no substitute...don't worry you will get one SOMEDAY...but make it quick cuz these cars are getting snapped up faster than a 928 the day after risky business was released...oooh yea!!!!
It’s a little hard to take seriously all this talk of the “purity” of the 996.1 over the .2 when the presenter is the owner of a Tip Tronic. Cognitive dissonance.
It’s a little hard to respect the value of a viewer’s comment when he doesn’t realise that unless you are on a track, the tiptronic is faster and easier for 99% of the time. Cognitive dissonance indeed.

Got my 996.1 and it's a great little car 👍
cable throttle is the best design for responsive and total gas pedal control!
This 1998-build owner here agrees as well. When it comes to the 996 the rule of thumb is ... the earlier, the better. 996. 1 Is the way to go!
BOOOOOOOOOO! 😜

My 04 C4S Cab has been flawless over the last 11 years of ownership
I'll keep my 996.1 !! Fried Egg , GT 1 headlights!! That had a Dual Row IMS. However, I have a LN Ceramic Dual Row IMS in mine now. No Worries!!~~
I had a 996.2 in Basalt Black. Great ride.
Gen 1 owner here. It's the one I wanted, with the clean sheet design and the stronger engine. Still ok on 123k miles.
Nice!
I bought the 996.2 C4S sunroof delete, the wide non turbo body just looks right
My neighbor has a 996.2 C4S and I admit I drool a bit when he opens his garage.
996.1 !!!!!
Meh! 😄
As a 996.1 owner, I'm biased, but I think the 99 996 is the best of the lot.
As an owner of a 1999 996 I have to say you are correct.
Lol!
I think the double row ims is better until you can swap it. I think the 997 .1 is also a better deal than the 996.2
@@cayman9873 Id honestly take a 996.2 over a 997.1 since the IMS job doesnt require the whole engine to come apart.

996 Turbo!
Even with prices raising it is still a performance bargain, although not as much as a bargain as it was just a few years ago.
Agreed. Mezger engine or nothing.
