      There is one problem with that: roughly 10 times more 996s were sold, when compared to the 993 sales numbers (not quite, but for illustrating it is ok to round up). Add that and that the 993 is the last air-cooled 911 and that it's been going up in value for 15-20 years now (basically since the launch of the 996). My agency works for Porsche and I worked on the 996 launch, I remember all the purists crying and bitching like it was yesterday, especially about the headlights (honestly, who cares?). We had a 996 targa at the agency for some time and I loved that car to pieces, would purchase one today if I was in the market for a combustion engine.

I had a blast ripping through traffic in this thing and it always performed like the 911 you expect. It's a superb car - 100% truth.

    I'm in my '60 and a Porsche 911 is (and has been since I was 10) on my bucket list. While I have always winced a bit about the 996 headlights, this video has me thinking maybe I'm being a bit shallow and has me pretty fired up. I could do this and not break the bank after all. And the headlights are looking better.... Thanks for the review, Doug!

      Perhaps. As the kids are almost out of college, this becomes a potential purchase to satisfy the urge to own a Porsche at least once in my life. Considering how much these and other Porsches cost brand new, this will likely be the only way to do it. $100K is not in my future, but $30K might be!

      from memory, the ride was smooth and the driver was hardly using any throttle and we were passing everything, the car was on upgraded rims as well at least 1 inch bigger as well

    • @drumhed
      @drumhed 7 лет назад +2

      No, osama, you made the same mistake Doug made. The complaints were not that the 996 was "outdated". The complaints were that Porsche changed the formula. The 993 was the epitome of the original 911 formula, and had all the same lines both inside and out. Hatred of the 996 comes from it being "new-fangled", not because it was "outdated". I am not surprised that non-purist Porsche fans struggle to understand this.

    • @kenshirk6993
      @kenshirk6993 7 лет назад +2

      If the hatred came because it was " new-fangled" why then did the 996 out sell the 993 almost 3 to 1? Yes, purists disapproved and immediately objected. But, it sold. I have never heard anyone claim the 996 was outdated during its production run. Yes, obviously it's somewhat outdated by today's standards. You don't hate a car because it's outdated....would you look at a Dino and declare your hatred for it because it is old?.....The 996 shared the front end with the Boxster-strike one, The IMS issues-strike two....idiots on the computer who have no idea what they are talking about-strike three. Today, the car has settled in and established a reputation as a dependable fun to drive car-worth far more than its asking price.

    About 5 years ago, I bought a '99 996 and I just love it. Steering and shifting in the 6 speed are so responsive and precise, it's just huge fun to drive. 60 in 5 flat is fast enough for my taste, and the car is so maneuverable, I love the new counter measure it gives me in dealing with tailgaters. If we come into some curvy roads, I just leave the cruise engaged and steer, watching the knucklehead slowing down because he cannot take the turns at speed. I had the great pleasure of hearing Peter Shutz talk about his first week after being hired as their president. Morale was down, and he asked about their racing team. They were due for the next race in 90 days, but nobody expected to win. He said "As long as I'm president, we will try our best to win every race we go to." This change in course helped energize the entire company and led to design changes trickling down from the racing team into production. He decided to cut the prices on all the unsold cars in their back lot, which hadn't been good for morale (seeing all those unsold cars when you come to work). This car is so well built that 115 mph feels the same as 55. My car had been leased by an orthodontist for her first owner, who told his friend, a software exec when he was ending his lease, who bought her then. She was garage kept and in great shape, with 52,500 miles and I spent $22,000. I couldn't care less about the headlight shape.

    • @mikec1096

      ironically , the fact that so many more 996 (175,000) were produced than 993 (68,000 from the online search I did) makes the supply soo much bigger for the 996 and hence the demand lower. Take the diamond industry for example, if there were a lot more diamonds available do you think they would command that high of a price? This is basic supply and demand. dirt is soo cheap b/c it's readily availble, unlike gold. BTW they are not making any more 996 or 993 for that matter, and every year there are fewer of the initial produced cars available due to crashes etc. I have looked the prices for 996 c4s in Germany and other european countries and they do seem to be a heck of a lot more expensive to buy same spec car there. It also seems that Europe in general does not care about the IMS.

      Diamonds aren't in the least bit rare. De Beers artificially inflated diamond prices starting in the 1940s, and it's become such a strong tradition that they be a precious status symbol, that those prices probably won't fluctuate much...De Beers just pays out hundreds of millions in settlements, and keeps on raking in billions~

      John Wick, Hakeem Mulholland, Guys I'm talking cars not jewels. I know about the De Beers family and I agree with what you said. I could have picked a better more relatively rare product for comparison. The thing about the De Beers monopoly is that b/c they control most of the supply they are artificially more rare. It's not like I can go into my back yard and pull a diamond from my rear. I think you get my point and it would have worked better if I were to have used Hakeem's examples instead. Thanks

    I'm glad someone else thinks this was the best of the 911s. Granted, I'm a Mustang nut for as long as I can remember but this was a beauty. I followed FIA GT racing for many years and a lot of the styling of this car came from the 911 GT1 Evo that ran in that series. Arguably the coolest GT car of the time.

      Thomas Headley They aren't. The PRE facelift 996 (so the 996.1) headlights were shared with the first Boxter. Porsche recieved complaints and gave every model (Carrera to Turbo) the headlights that had been on the Turbo since the beginning (these headlights) while the Boxter's stayed the same

    The 996 is by far the best one if you want to make a shit ton of power and go fast. By far the strongest engine out of them all. The performance aftermarket for them is huge now, and they can be picked up for fairly cheap.
    This is the top for anyone who comes from Vw's. It usually goes VW, Audi, Porsche. And if you follow that trend. This is the one you get.

    I always liked the way the turbo looked in red and this car with those wheels and those rear fenders does look really nice. As for the headlights, they look like they have tear ducts and that’s okay. But the 993 dashboard is much nicer than this cars. The way they upgraded it from the previous cars dash was brilliant IMO. The SC steering wheel is the nicest of the three. 😊

    Maybe I'm just crazy, but I actually love this headlight design, especially with the orange blinker. I think it looks *better* than the simple oval. Not a 911, but a 2000 Porsche Boxster, I think is one of the best looking cars.

      On target! Always regretted selling my '85 911 for some still unfathomable reason because I felt I needed something to carry "stuff"...a new Ford Explorer in 1991, a really dumb move. Occasionally grieved over that sale for years. Then by age 70 I knew salvation was needed, ran into a low mileage, good deal '02 911 Cab and concluded it was now or never, while I could still climb in and out of a 911. Six years and happiness still prevails. Don't be afflicted with "woulda, coulda, shoulda"....anyone with the itch should scratch it NOW.

    I have a (996.2) 2002 Carrera 4S. It is WITHOUT QUESTION the best car I've ever driven in my life! I found the car in the PCA classified ads. It has a 4-page CarFax dealer history with a ceramic IMS bearing job, new power heated memory seats, new Alcantara headliner, new clutch, new radiators and new tires. The car had 151k miles and I got it ALL-IN for $20,000 including shipping across the country and tax-title-registration. It is without question the BEST car I've ever driven in my life!!! I have the original window sticker and it was a $98,000 car when new. I've owned 8 other Porsches since 1982. A 1971 914-1.7, 1978 924, 1969 912, 1984 Carrera, 2000 Boxster Tip, 1981 911sc Euro wide-body Targa, 2004 Boxster S tip and a 2001 Boxster S 6-spd. This 996 Carrera 4S blows them all away with the 4 wheel drive, power beyond belief and gorgeous (killer!) wide turbo body. I still have the 1981 Euro Targa and the 2001 Boxster S, but the 996 4S is my daily driver and I couldn't be happier. PS-it's my favorite color too...Lapis Blue Metallic! Thanks for your video and support of the best sports car bargain available!

      Take out the ash tray, CD holder and move the climate control module to the bottom. That opens up a big spot that will fit a new double-DIN android stereo very well. It's awesome because you can load Torque on the stereo then access the ECU in real time on a big screen built into your dash. It's like a budget Tesla.

    I owned an 85 911 and 01 996. I loved my 996. My favorite thing was the interior, it was sporty and simple. I was looking at a 997, but the interiors have become too plush. I was always a little worried about the IMS, until I had a rear main seal replaced and found out the IMS update was done. To this day I'm not sure why I got rid of it. One of my bone-head mistakes. BTW. the turbos and maybe the Carrera 4, didn't have an IMS issue. They used 964 blocks.

    • @KennethStaton
      @KennethStaton 4 года назад +1

      turbos and gt cars were mezger based engines that had a different oil feed system and no IMS, those were based off the race engines of the times sooooo goooood!
