This video is such a valuable resource for pilots. It is amazing how fast an airplane can get ahead of you while you are fixated on a problem (w/instruments, navigation, etc.), and once you start getting behind a snowball effect takes over and can overwhelm a pilot in a high workload aircraft. I liked how you stopped the student from cleaning up the airplane after landing. He needs to stay focused on flying the airplane (including the rollout) and not be distracted by flap settings while you are speeding down the runway at a 90 mph.
Bobby Allison had an Aerostar you could put Jet-A into. It was an experimental [TIA] with RR 250-B17's installed turning 3 blades. He told me it flew like a jet when I was working with Jim Christy on the FJ-100 and other projects. That project would have been a lot better than the Cessna 340 Silver Eagle turbine from O&N, or whatever they are called now.
Inside of a mile final you broke the sterile cockpit rule. Scott was concentrating on staying ahead of his airplane and you mentioned a casino. Luckily, he didn't break concentration. It's obvious he's rusty and needs more practice with his equipment. Naughty, naughty, Eric. Bad behavior turns into a bad habit.
Geez!!! How hard is it to tweak the prop levers MANUALLY if the “prop sync isn’t working”??? There’s not SO much to do that you can’t fix it quick. Even if you can’t get it 100%, a slow dissonant roll in the sound is better than that head-banging cacophony for the entire departure.
Your student is in overload. Perhaps he could work and try to master the nav/com equipment on the ground and work on techniques to stay ahead of the planned flight. Your instructions and teaching is spot on.
@@hawkdsl He needs to learn how to use his FMS/GPS/Nav equip before going flying so he can concentrate on his scan and awareness. Not a big deal, but if he doesn't it could become dangerous.
Hello Ed, I noticed that at rotation (3:20) your student applied a large amount of right aileron to correct for the left turning tendency. Is this what was actually happening?
Another great video Eric. Love the sound of the four blades. Any performance improvement? Thanks for your help on the pressurization dial, inner ring and outer ring! FP
Don't laugh, I operated 10 of these as freighters in the 70's and a nugget FBO ramper put jet fuel in 4 of them and you guessed it. He said it looked like a turboprop which was BS ignoring the 100LL labels. He put just enough not to notice on preflight and on takeoff overheated all of them. A Navajo Chieftain with the same treatment crashed in a schoolyard trying to return to Love Field. Luckily all of my guys made it back without incident.
I've sold several checklist for the Aerostar but have never really seen much of one. This was a great insight to one operating. Those engines sounded practically like turboprops with the MT props... nice ring!
The owner is smart to have an experienced instructor with him. In time the owner will feel more comfortable and may even realize the props are out of sync…
He is either a new Star pilot or very rusty as he was well behind the aircraft…..and perhaps just the video but was out prop synch almost the entire time.
I was gonna say the same thing but you beat me to it. The PIC is way behind the ac and get those damn props synced. For someone who is flying an Aerostar I am thinking that is too much plane for the pic at this time. Maybe an old Apache would be more appropriate at this point.
He is obviously learning the equipment and avionics reason why he s "behind the plane"! Getting on an Apache won t change anything. It s a question of learning the acft equipment and getting proficient with it.
Yeah really frustrating video to watch. IFR procedures are really lacking. Got behind the airplane and never recovered. Didn't even appear to brief the approach. Things happen quickly in this aircraft! Nice work Eric.
Wouaaahh only pro pilots here. I m curious see look at one of your flight learning a twin engine with new avionics in IFR. You were probably all perfect on your first flights 🙄
I think if I owned one, I’d have a few taped up bricks of white powder laying around just so people asked questions. Would be lots of fun 😂 These aircraft are so sexy!
Very easy to get behind a fast airplane. I would have aborted the approach and get vectored around for a second attempt. So easy to get distracted by nav setup and get behind the airplane.
Aerostar's 702P specs with the S-tec 3100 autopilot. The old specs have the KFC 225 autopilot which now is old school. The mods include: TIO-540-U2A 350 hp engines, 6850# GW, 5.5psi cabin, 6 puck brakes. Spend time with fine tuning the rigging, you could get another 15 kts above book speeds. Winglets are cool and maybe add 3 kts in the flight levels. Spoilers are nice but not a necessity.
@@eminye1 If we are talking about port and polish, I have heard it doesnt make a difference with turbocharged engines. I have heard of some that did the port and polish with the normally aspirated engines and felt it made a difference.
I always thought these planes would be cool with 2 PT6A-21’s with 550shp it would look cool and be very fast and the climb rate would like a rocket ship.
There's a jet powered aerostar. If you wanted to make a turboprop version then the TPE331-10 would be a better fit. Pt6 engines are better suited to singles rather than twins.
Rule of thumb is 1 blade per 200 HP. Just how much HP do these engines turn out? I am thinking around 300 so you should be a 3 blade MAX. Why the 4? That's ALOT of inertia to spool up in a quick go around.
In addition to my previous comment, I never witnessed a fueler, topping off from behind the wing, poor practice. Also you are asking for trouble using that hanger, what happens if a strut leaks down or a tire.
It would appear this "Pilot flying" is just a step or two behind his aircraft..The sad fact about Geezer pilots is complacency & ego a dangerous mix ....

The resonance of those props being out of synch would drive me bananas! Great vid!
The aerostar is such a cool plane, it was years ahead of its time. I remember as a kid reading all about it in Flying magazine.
I think it was the only airplane I worked on without stall warning.
Love your right-seat autopilot assistant... His simple accurate announcements and timely announcing procedures (very appropriate) were great...

This is a fast piston twin high performance Aircraft you got to stay way ahead of it and never be left behind
This is the first time I've heard ATC speaking clearly and legibly. Well done and great video.
So glad I found this channel
Good example of someone behind the ball.
I'm used to parking aircraft like that haha. Welcome to the maintenance world!
Gorgeous plane, looks like a handful
Those 2 Lycoming TI0-540 engines are a good fit for the Aerostar!
This 4 blade P model sounds great

We always used the spinners to confirm the nose gear is down in addition to the gear lights, they should be polished not painted.
That is correct however the MT spinners are not aluminum.
How cool flew into my local airport wish i coulda seen the bird
*_Sync the Props Next Time!_*
I know, that is one of my pet peeves. Prop sync was not working. A lot of people either done hear the beat or don't care. Drives me nuts.

Other than the props and intercoolers it is a standard 601P. There are a few other mods like the slow speed handling kit that Aerostar does.
We have the same last name. It is welsh. Our family came to America in the 1860’s.
Welch too. Original spelling Rhys.
Shows why you gotta keep that hand flying experience up. Sometimes the autopilot won't do it

Garmin G3x I believe.
It’s a Garmin G500txi, 7 inch display I believe
If someone were to bump into the tail section moving it just 1/2 inch would put that wing into the shelf no ! To risky I think

less vibration? better field performance noticeable?

What is the fuel burn per hour a cruise and altitude?
Same designer for both Aerostar and Twin Commander….Ted Smith.
Any idea what the model # of those props are by chance?
Sorry I do not. Just call MT and ask. The aircraft is the Aerostar 601P. This one has the normal 290 HP engines
