Like the old adage, A man cannot serve two masters. We cannot seek and capture our "bliss" without sacrificing our duties and responsibilities. We can do one or the other. It might be possible to have both, but only in a restrictive balance. Something or Someone will suffer as a result.
Well, unless you find a way to combine your bliss and make it useful to your surrounding somehow -- like when people make their hobby into a business; or how Campbell made his thirst for knowledge into a profession of teaching. But you're right, it's never ideal. But maybe it's not suppose to be ; )
Doing a Biography search on JC, he was married, his wife is apparently still alive at 103 yo.. They both pursued their "bliss", their sacrifice seems to have been to not have children. Funny, not knowing this, I always imagined him as a Grandpa, sitting under a tree with his grandchildren around him while he tells the story of Achilles.
@@oldmanfromscenetwentyfour8164 In a way he is. He may not have aspired to being a biological father to anyone, but as a professor at Sarah Lawrence for nearly 40 years, I bet he was a father-figure to a number of this students over those years. And because we are so lucky to have many of his lectures in audio or video form, he's now a grandpa to those us who *choose* to gather around him and listen to his stories. I bet he wouldn't have it any other way. : )

I've owned Mythos I, II, and III (video series) for a number of years. It wasn't until I managed to get a 1970's era hardback of "The King and the Corpse" recently from Amazon that I read this story for the first time. What is this video taken from? Also I keep hearing that there is a sort of Mythos IV out there that goes through Finnegan's Wake in the same incredible way III goes through the Magic Mountain. Any of this true?
"Wings of Art" consists of about 6 hours on Joyce. "Transformations of Myth Through Time" has the Arthurian material. (Originally on VHS, then transcribed as a book.) Mann lecture is about 2 hours, includes clips from "Magic Mountain" feature film. (Forgot where that's included.)
@@rg3388 Thank you! Are those available somewhere in video or audio? Boy, the Campbell Foundation people don't give me a good vibe. They've never responded to any of my questions on any of these networks even when mine was the only one. Now, they've taken down his lectures from Spotify.
@@StephenPickering I have everything on physical media. Found the Joyce stuff on an Asian site. Search for "Wings of Art-Joseph Campbell on James Joyce 1990" and it should be in the video results. Good luck!
I think Campbell means that each of us has two sides: one side -- a person who is a social being and is required by society to play a role and be useful somehow... and the other side who is a spiritual being with his/her own specific individual desires and drives. It is by finding a way to combine these two into one that gives birth to a "well-rounded" life. Anyway, that's at least the way I interpret it. : )
Ohhhhhh shitt. I get chu. So you cannot have one before the other. He's talking about the adventure of raising the christ. Damn I wish I could have met this man.
Disjointed, hacked up, out of context bits and pieces of Campbell"s message? The world needs, for example, the full Moyer / Campbell interviews uncut, But this foumdation is instead hacking Campbell's core messages up into tiny little disjointed hacked up bits and pieces. They are doing that as teasers to commercially monetize Campbel's work. The very nature of Campell's works must remain freely available, intact, in context, and sui- generis on a "giving foot forward" monetization model, which primarily is not the JC Foundation monetization model. Does this greedy foundation have copyrights on these works? Why can't anyone post these works up on IE. You Tube etc. free uncut unedited? For instance the full uncut Campbel / Moyers series. Why is Moyer not acting to counter this outrage? How to obtain these works intact & unedited now like when Campbell was alive without profiteering? That would be Campbell's will. The Campbell Foundation, in the guise of proliferating Campbell's body of work, is instead fragmenting it for commercial monetary motives. So aggravating! Seriously any effort to keep Campbell's work free, and free of being hacked up, and free of being exploited by the world system, then count us in. Metaphorically speaking: God was out for a stroll one day with the devil following along & imitating God. God was carrying something "he" had picked up along the way. The devil runs up and asks. "whatcha got there God?" God replies, "I got the truth." The devil then says," give it to me & I will organize it for you!". JC Foundation you need to stop "money changing on the temple steps".
Well, if he found his true bliss and he knows it, first thing first, tends to her needs by representing her in court... Promises to help her reach a level she thought she could never achieve... Trusts her in his power and affection... Then she leaves him to hide in his castle.. What if his true bliss... while waiting on him, to defend some sort of court that never recognized his own birthrite or knighthood.. was too overwhelming for her... maybe she only wanted to remain the servant maid because of the pressure... maybe he never left her at all.. Maybe he was wounded in his struggle to conquer his own and she is just, gone now.. 🤔
I Am so grateful for all of Josephs sharings 💕 thank you so much.
God bless the 6 👌✨💛
