How To Provide Security & Get

  • Work with your parrot a quicker way or a slower way to get them to come out of their cage-
    The quicker way involves providing things to provide safety and security. Just like a person, a parrot needs to feel at home and to feel that their noisy selves will be loved and appreciated.
    Next, try offering treats and do target training. Training develops a common ‘language’ so that your parrot knows what you are doing and what is expected of them.
    Use a stick- sometimes it offers a parrot more comfort to step onto a stick - and it can keep you from being bitten.
    Be patient. Try different things because no one thing works every time. If you do and you keep at it, your parrot will shift, gain trust and learn to connect with you.

    They are funny. That is so true that it takes at least 6 months to get them trusting you and build a relationship with them. My one guy has just recently gotten to the point that he totally trusts me, begs food from me and will fly around and land on me (I am home base). I spend a lot of one-to-one time with each of them. I just love my boys 😊

    OMG...I'm so glad you made this video. I' have an 8 month old parrotlet that I have had almost 3 months. She wasn't socialized and cage bound with siblings. I keep seeing videos of content providers cuddling the new bird after 2 days. She's target trained and trusts me to touch her nose while training (like a target) but won't step up or come out of the cage and retreats to the other side of the cage when I change the water. I thought I was doing something horribly wrong or smelled like cats or something. Thank you SO MUCH for being honest about how long it can take. I've been thinking of rehoming her because we still haven't bonded to the "2 day point" and she doesn't do anything without me motivating her. I have to put on music and dance around like a lunatic to even get her to start moving. I'm not going to admit how frequently I do this. 🙂 This video renewed my hope!

      Thank for posting - I mean to help so that you feel better and don’t give up. So, yay!
      Is she the only parrot you have? Is she flighted and, if so, does she know how to fly?

      @@ParrotBliss She is the only bird. She has been clipped and I doubt she knows how to fly. She was in a small breeder cage with siblings. I see a couple of flight feathers coming in so soon to fly. I don't like the idea off keeping birds clipped long term.

    Great video. One of my caiques was 5 months when I got her. It took her almost 6 months to relax enough to come out and step up. Now she’s one of my most bonded birds. What worked for me was, going slowly, being patient and not becoming frustrated. Also, I work in 5 to 10 minute time slots finishing on something positive.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  2 года назад +2

      Yes, it really takes time to create a deeper bond. What do you do during the 5 to 10 min slots?

    • @1hawaii21

      @Parrot Bliss with a new bird it’s kind of like target training 101. Sometimes just getting the bird to touch my target is a big plus. I might do that for 5 minute intervals throughout out an afternoon. When they have that down I’ll increase the time to 10 minutes asking for a step up on a perch. I focus on being calm, cheerful and watching the bird’s body language. I keep small pieces of almonds and walnuts in a bag in my pocket for an instant reward. I always end with a reward. The other thing I do is train before breakfast. They will always work better for me. I never try to rush them. It’s also important to reinforce what they’ve learned. I have trained dogs for obedience competition. It’s very similar.

      We’ve taken our dogs to puppy training in the past, I find similarities too. Thanks for writing back- I think basic training creates a common ‘language’ and a common activity that starts to bridge a connection, so you saying that’s what you have done reinforces it :)

    Hi thanks alot for your video just one question please does that mean we have to put our amazon in the cage until he is able to step up on our hand because mine doesn't want to step up but wants to go out of the cage He recently started making alot of noise to go out. He is a blue fronted amazon that is 4 months old, so can you advise me what to do?

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  2 года назад +1

      No- spend time with him. If you have the time to spend with him, he will become tame and will definitely step up.

  • @DragonDDark

    My brother gave us an amazon and I want to try to tame him. When I put my hand near the cage, he just goes for a bite. He does eat from me, but I think we're both afraid of each other right now lol
    I never had a bird, so I hope we do grow a bond.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Год назад +1

      Spend as much time with and around the Amazon as you can. If you create a bond, you will be shocked at how strong it is and what a close relationship you will form. He is defending his space/cage. If you can let him out, it’ll be neutral territory and easier to connect. Keep at it, Amazons make great bonded parrots.
