Great advice and great close up. I’ve been researching on how to cut my dogs nails properly to push the quick back and no one, had a close up this good. Thanks, I’m more confident now.
What a fantastic video! Very clear instructions and an excellent camera angle. The best part: your compassion for this sweet rescue and your obvious care in sharing these important tips. Thank you!
Hey awesome bulldog..Thank You so much for your kind comment,we are trying real hard to produce as good a quality videos as we can, still working on some lighting, and sound stuff..Thanks for noticing our effort..Its our goal,to give as many tips, and share as much of our grooming knowledge as possible,so we can all try to help out our furry friends..lol..Thanks so much for watching..
1. You can use a flashlight to see the vein and cut accordingly. A small, intense light works best. 2. If one person sits down in a chair and holds the dog upright in their lap (rear down, head up facing away from you), the dog becomes disorientated and more submissive while the other person quickly cuts the nails. 3. Cut the nails a little but often. Less chance of cutting the quick and the dog begins to accept.
Good video. Telling people to look for the black spot in the middle shows that you are about to hit the "quick" or vein. I groomed for 2I years and found this video to be better than many I have seen on you tube.
+Suzie Williams It can be very messy. And if the dog is old and sick, whole nuther story, and not a happy one. Although I 've been doing it for so long, I don't ever do it without "Quick Stop" handy.
You are MORE than welcome!!! I have 3 dogs and I LOVE animals. I know we can't rescue them ALL, but for those that we CAN, it makes a world of difference. GOD BLESS YOU (no offense or disrespect intended) AND ALL YOU DO FOR THOSE ANIMALS.
This was a really helpful video, good close up shots that clearly show what you are doing. On a side note what a good boy he was being given everything he had already been through :)
Thank You so much Chloe..He is such a sweet dog.I saw him again, since the video, and was able to cut his nails back even further. We wanted to be real careful, not to hit his vain, after him being rescued. Not to upset him in any way.He is doing awesome with his new owners, and is being loved, and cared for everyday..Thanks again for watching.
I do my dogs nails, how in the heck can you tell where the quick is on black nails? I get paranoid when I clip them. His dad can do em in no time, but he prefers to clip his nails when they are soft from a bath. He calls the other,"dry run", he don't like doing
+Debby P - your dad is very smart. I was a groomer for 21 years, and I loved doing the nails after the bath. Easier on the dog too. There will be a little black spot in the middle of the nail, and it tells you the quick is right there. Then it's time to stop.
Thank you for such a well explained and filmed video of how to trim a dogs nails! You are so patient and calming. He was such a well behaved boy! I hope he is doing well in his new home!
If someone is using dremel tool, DO NOT stay on one nail too long or press very hard. The hi speed tool will heat up the nail with friction. I find that my large dogs, nails took longer so i rotated. Then start back on cool nails again. Mission accomplished.
Mimi Bernier yes.. Omg I can speak from my experience just at the nail salon. The guy “burned” my nail. Hurt like fuckin hell. Definitely the fastest way to establish distrust.
Thank u for taking care of this poor pup ❤️ my dogs hate there feet touch at all so it’s soo hard to cut them and they do get pretty long so thanks for the tips
Thanks so much for sharing this. I have neglected my dogs nails, including the dew claws, and the timing of my seeing this video is perfect. Gives me an extra kick in the pants to address things!! Thankfully, my dog is not as bad as this poor pups, but still...shame on me. I'm so glad this pup had someone like you, to make it feel better. I am curious to know if that vein will recede, as time goes on with frequent trimming? If anyone can answer, it's appreciated. :)
Admitting this takes guts especially on RUclips. I hope it went well with your baby’s claws. I hate this part of grooming my dog she is a fidget butt. Xx
Thank You so much Patricia,it really means a lot to us..We are trying really hard to give the best production value as we can, with what little resources we have at the moment..lol.Thanks again for watching..
Gotta subscribe! This is Just what I needed to know. Very helpful tips and informations! Thank you for sharing this! Wish me luck on my senior Friend’s dog I’m helping. God Bless and stay safe! 😘🙏🏼Big hugs and kisses from California With Love ❤️
This video made me pay attention to the tips of their pads. Then I checked my dogs and they had little black dots and hard grainy rock pieces coming out. Sanded em smooth. Dry.. been soaking their feet in Epsom salt and keeping em clean.
Dear Rudy, I am so glad you cut those dogs nails. I also would like to invite you to check out other ways to get more off of those nails. Filing or dremeling could be an option :) There is a fabulous informative group on facebook called Dog Nail Maintenance. Thanks again for helping this little guy out.
Thanks so much for watching and for the comment. Filing and Dremeling is definitely something we do on a daily basis. For this particular dog, considering the rough couple of weeks he probably had, we didn't want to go with the file or dremel for his first visit with us. They can be a bit noisy sometimes. However we will be introducing him to those in the future as he gets more and more comfortable with us. We have actually demonstrated the dremel in a past nail clip video. We are planning on doing more tutorials on them as many people seem to be more comfortable using those tools at home. We were so happy to help this dog out, all he did was kiss us when we were finished, almost to say "thank you so much!"
In some dogs it does. Not all dogs. Sometimes once the quick overgrows it never recedes no matter how hard you try. Frankly I think this dog should have been sedated and the nails cut back to about half the length they ended up here, to give him a fresh start. These nails are really far too long to be safe, even after cutting.
After I broke my right hand and thumb, I couldn't cut my dog's nails for quite some time. When I finally could, the nails had grown a lot (not as much as in this video). I first cut as much as possible with a clipper and then I filed the tips with a nail grinder. I repeated this once a week and after several months, the nails were short again.
I adopted a 15 month old lab mix from someone at work, had just seen a picture but understood he most likely would be an emotional mess as I was his 5th home in that short time..anyway, his nails were so long that a couple were around 3 inches out.... they had grown straight out, good on one hand bad on the other.... not to mention no one had bothered to get him neutered... he hates getting his nails clipped HATES it... I found, for him, that if I let his feet soak in a couple inches of water in the tub that they cut easier and quicker which he now tolerates... had to do them little by little weekly as the quicks were so extended.
@@billmotley how do you tell how much to cut your dogs nails if they are black? My dog is 18 months old and ive never cut her nails because she always wore thrm down, but lately theyve been growing longer. Not sure if i should cut them or not yet. How do you tell? (Obv mt nails arent as long as in this vid)
@@GroomingByRudy How long should one wait to let the vien recede? I've heard elsewhere that a week but I am wondering if that's too short and can vary by dog?
@@GroomingByRudy so how often can you clip to get them at a shorter length? I am so afraid I will cut the quick I am doing very short amounts and his nails are black. Weekly?
Great video! So explanatory and the close ups are great. But I'm surprised all these groomers though have never heard of using a pen flashlight for the dark nails. You shine it through the nail and you can easily see where the vein is. A vet told me that years ago and it really works. The dark nails always made me nervous because I couldn't see very well being they were dark, and therefore didn't get cut as short. Also, I was never really sure how to use the clippers. Do I cut the nail from the top, or turn the nail a bit and cut side ways? I always did it side ways, not sure if that's really right though. My Pibble was okay with it, my Shi-poo is horrible. And he's got both white and dark nails. :( I can see if I ever cut him by accident (then for sure they'll be traumatized if you will) and then I'd understand him never wanting it again, but I never have. Also, I hold the nail not just the toe. Okay, wow! hahaha. Thank you!
Poor dog! Poodles often seem to have extremely long talons, not sure why. A nail trim every 10 days or so is what I do with our Whippet, taking off just maybe 1mm at a time.
Hi Rudy.. So, I can see the pink part of the quick but there's a greyish black bit at a quarter to the tip following those pink quick. Is it safe to cut that part? If I'm not wrong it would be a dried quick?
Yes, you could probably go a little further than I did in the video, but not much. This dog had not had it’s nails clipped in a long time and I wanted to be certain to not hit the vein and lose his trust for future nail clippings.
@@GroomingByRudy thanks for your reply. I've been wondering for ages cos my dog's nail is a bit long now and it has grey bit at the tip of the quick. I just want to make sure that bit won't hurt him. Thanks again. Really appreciate it.
I just took my dog to the vet because he pants when taking him for a walk and even stops walking. I noticed some months ago his pads sticking out from under his paw after a grooming. I actually thought it was something growing on his paw. Took him to the vet and they said nothing informative ... even though I trust them immensely. Same as yesterday, they never addressed his pads even though I mentioned them. My dog's nails are not growing under his pads but they are curved. I've been told for years that he has long quicks. Once again, never was told to keep trimming them back so that the quick would recede. The vet wants to put him to sleep and cut all of his nails back as far as they can. This seems like too much torture for my dog. I'm unsure what is worse on my dog. But I decided to start with trimming his nails back more often and hoping his quick will recede before going to the extreme of surgery that my vet said would cause him a lot of pain. :-( And finding another vet. Thanks for you video. I'm going to learn how to trim his nails and start doing it myself.
that's insane. it seems like that vet was trying to ignore the dog's nails so that they would get out of control, then they'd make you pay a fortune for a nail surgery ..
When they get that long, can you ever get them back to normal length or is it a matter of what's done is done? Because it appears that even after you cut the nails, they still appear very long. Is there any way of getting them back to reset?
You can get them back,it just requires staying on top of it..Weekly clips, and grinding little by little, and than maintaining after that..We appreciate you watching us..Thank you
I have a dog that absolutely hates her nails being done She bites at me and fights it terribly. I work at her a tiny bit at a time but she has two long nails that curve slightly to the side. I try to make it a pleasant experience for her and offer her a treat when she even let's me nip the tiniest amount off the end. Working on it but with some dogs, it can be really hard. Funny thing is that she is jealous when I comb or otherwise groom the Shitzu and fights to get the attention, until I pick up her foot.
That is funny Brenda, sounds like she wants things on her terms..lol Keep working on it..I think you may gain her trust over some time..Be careful not to get bitten to badly.Maybe u can try a basket muzzle,or an elizabethan collar..check out our video called..overgrown nails and pads..It might help..Thank You for watching.
You cut as much as you can without hitting the vein. It'll recede on it's own over time. Just make sure you keep trimming regularly and eventually you will notice the difference. Idr how long it took my dog's quick to reduce.
Regularly means once a week when trying to shorten the quick. Make sure you get the extra nail on top and sides. Basically as short as you can go in every angle once a week until they start to shorten. Then once every 2 weeks
How were you able to get about 3mm or 4mm of nail off without cutting his quik? How soon would you retrim? How long would it take to get his nails short and comfortable? Thanks for the vid!
Hard to tell in the vid,but i can see approx..where the quik is,and I'm very practiced as well..This dog in particular, came back 3 weeks later, and i was able to get them back a little further..You can usually, correct the overgrown problem in a month, but in a case like this, the dog will feel immediate relief, simply because the nail is no longer lifting the digit ..Thank You so much for watching..
Hey Sarah,it really depends on the individual dog..You should try to aim, just in front of the quick (vien)and you can follow up with grinding them,if your dog allows you to.Doing them often, such as once every 2 weeks, would keep them as short as you can probably go .Try your best not to cut into the vien..Thank You for watching..
You can do it either way,but sometimes its better to do it before the bath,in case you hit a vein, you can wash it off,and also, the nail softening, can make it more sensitive..
I just rescued a baby like this. His nails are very log but they are black. I can't tell how far to cut. Is there any advice on that? I'm not able to take him anywhere seeing as I'm recently in isolation due to health reasons.
On average how long would it take for something like this to happen? Months ? Years? I just got my dog back from 3 years from staying with my mom , and I've had her since April and I've been going through LIFE and I havent been able to get my baby groomed properly and I just seen them and it almost made me cry .
Depending on breed, situation, and individual dog, they can get this long in as little as 3 months, and in a lot of cases, even longer than this dog..rule of thumb, dogs nails should be clipped, every 3 weeks,to a month..Thank You for watching.
My doggo we got off the streets. He already had the long nails and has forever hated his nails being cut or trimmed even the slightest. He sometimes will only let me cut them and nobody else cuz I'm like his momma main companion . for 7 years now his nails have been long. But not to ware it's affecting the paw like this dog. In guessing maybe breed type. Mine is a very strange mut. He looks like a pitbull German shepherd but has the dashound legs. Ware they curve out . so he has a decent medium sized body and big head . but little legs. His name is scrappy cuz he looks like scrappy doo. This video was very helpful . we r taking him in soon to get his nails professionally done again. I trust them more then myself . and they did a great job and did his nails when we got him fixed. It was awesome . since he was already put under lol
Thank you so much for your kind words..Your dog sounds awesome, love his name, and I'm so glad you saved him,and are giving him a great life..It is a great decision to have them professionally done. Its so common that dogs dislike there nails done..thank you so much for watching us..Scrappy is a lucky dog to have you..
Just a random question that came to mind....what do wild dogs do to keep their nails in check? How often should fog nails be cut? Thank you for all your lessons. 🙂
Wild dogs and pets that live outside the house wear down the nails due to abrasion when walking on concrete, driveways, gravel, etc. anything abrasive. Living in the country we always had “outside” dogs and never ever trimmed their nails. Never needed to.
What if you Cut half of the nail with its nerve..would it heal after and be shorter?? i hate to have my dog's nail too long..i have the same issue but kinda shorter than that witch nails lol...
It will retract, with regular maintenance, although with nails as long as the dog featured in this video,it would take some, and extra care..Thank you for watching.
So if the quick grows with the nail, does that mean that dog is going to have that long ugly nail for the rest of its life or will the quick shrink back allowing for more nail to be taken off later?
How often should you trim when they get too long like that? And how many months of faithful trimming until the vein receeds and you can get the nails to the proper length?
Kat ..It varies between breed type, age, activity level etc...,but if you trimmed, and grinded them once a week, for a month, you should be able to get them down considerably..After that clipping every other week, would help to maintain a healthy length..Thank You so much for watching..
Love your videos! I have a question for you. So I regularly get my dogs nails cut. About every 3 weeks. I rescued her about 3 years ago and her nails clicked on the floor the day I brought her home. And even with regular nail trimming (every 3 weeks) they still click on the floor even when we get home from a nail cutting. Is this ok?/normal? I read that getting their nails cut regularly would shorten the quick but 3 years later the quicks arent any shorter than they started out. Does this hurt her? Just wanted to make sure. Do you have any tips on how to get the quicks to recede?? Thanks so much!
I'm not a professional in this area, but just sharing my 2 cents. Some people bring their dogs to the vet to get sedated to cut their nails & quick especially when the quick is too long and causing discomfort to the dog. My vet told me that some owners request for that when they bring their dogs for neutering as the dog will already be sedated then. But i wouldn't recommend that unless for rare cases as sedation carries risks. Maybe you could try bringing your pet out for more walks/ running on hard ground so it will put pressure on the nails to recede the quick. U could also try using a nail grinder as i find it easier to trim it closer to the quick without causing bleeding :)
watched couple vids of vets saying grinding and or cutting the top of the nail is the correct method ,this seems the opposite of how the nail would naturally wear down from walking . so conflicting info from vets makes me unsure how to go about technique, can you give your opinion on vets reccomending cutting the top of nail and staying away from bottom ?
hi im a first time dog owner, i just wanna ask how would i know if the vein is there or like how would it look like so i can avoid it once i clip her nails.
I have a dog with worse nails but have never been able to clip far because the quick is as long as the nail. Other dogs I don't have this problem. Not sure what to do
I have guillotine style clippers and my dog's nails are pretty long (not quite as long as the nails in the video). My clippers don't open up like scissors as yours do, I have to slip the nail through the clippers. Anyway, the nails curve down further than the video and when I try to slip it over the nail, I can see that the quick is in the way. Is it ok if I cut the nail at all different angles? And it may be that my clippers aren't as well made like yours, but I just bought them and they don't make as clean of a cut as yours do. Is that ok? Is it hurting my dog?
Caitlin..Not sure what brand of clippers you have, but with nails this long, you may be better off with the open end nail clippers. It will be much easier to cut on that angle you talking about, and will also allow you to see the quick a little better ..Top Performance ..is the brand I'm using in the vid..There real good, about 12 bucks...If it is hurting the dog,or twisting the nail,as the guillotines sometimes do,i think the will probably let you know, and if so,try the ones i use..Thank You for watching..Sorry about the late response..
Start off with the just got rescued part in the beginning haha. Jk. Great info. Still watching but it should be discussed how it affects dog posture? And gait?
we take our dog to the vet but he hates the muzzle and getting his nails clipped. How do we overcome his anxiety/aggression to having his nails cut? He almost bites us or vet assistants when we try.
Im sorry that is the case for you.You are not alone,it is very common that a lot of dogs hate to have there nails clipped Can your vet maybe give him something to calm him down before they do it? ..Good Luck..Thank You so much for watching..
How can you tell where the wick is on black nails?.. and if it grows with the nails how do you know where to stop? I'm not to trusting of the groomers in our town and I'm not sure if my nail trimmers are to small.. any suggestions on what I should do..I think they're too long myself and I also think its affecting how my dog walks :-(
So, if you keep trimming the nails of the dog in the video on a regular basis, will you eventually be able to get them as short as they should be? Does the pulp/quick recede if you trim often?
It does recede, but not as much as you think it will.Clipping the nail, and grinding it with a nail grinder will get them to recede even more..Check out our ..How To Clip And Grind Nails Video..

....so....what next? How do you get the nail to gradually reduce in size? Can you complete this for us please? Can you get the nails back to a healthy size? If so, how often do you cut? Does the quick retreat?
Once a week, and using a grinder would help get them back a little further..If the nail is to grown out,it may not ever get back to normal..We have several other nail clip vids on our channel..
How do you reverse an issue where the quick grew with the nail? Is it possible to ever the nail as short as it was before the quick grew with the nail?
My dogs nails are much much longer than that. They look like hooks pretty much but he doesnt let me cut his nails. Last time we had to take him to the vet to put him to sleep for them to cut. I'm considering CBD for dogs. Maybe it will calm him? What clips are you using?
We have a radio show coming out about CBD,in about a week..a company called KURAPET.COM,puts out a very high quality CBD line ..check them out,it may do wonders..A lot of people swear by it..Let us know if it helps..Thank You so much for watching..
Grooming By Rudy- I bought the calm and quiet cbd for small dogs and it didn't work. I gave him a packet and nothing and an hour later gave him another one and nothing. He still barked at everyone and didn't get calm at all.I have a 13 years old chihuahua dog. He doesn't walk anymore due to arthritis but i believe is because his nails. He has one where its touching the pad. I might have to take him back to the vet :/
Hey Charlene, rule of thumb in nail trimming,is once a month, but in this case of overgrown nails,it should be done once a week or once every two weeks, until they get to back to a more manageable length..then you go to once a month..always have quick stop ready,in case you hit the vein..thank you so much for watching..
I have a Chihuahua that was a rescue several years ago. His poor little life has been hell, when we found him he had a huge gash on his side that needed stitches. He was attacked by a Pit Bull when we first brought him home, he was in the hospital for a week and had two surgeries. He came out of it Thank God but his nails...WOW. His nails are longer than I have ever seen, I should be taking him in monthly but it is such an ordeal I hate to put him through it. He knows the minute we get close what is going to happen and he starts getting vicious, I comfort him over and over but he doesn't care. Tried doing it at home but, I just can't I am afraid to hurt him. Two Groomers said don't bring him back, he releases his Anal gland, it is torture for him...Any advice, I would do anything for him, also because his Lung collapsed during the Pit attack I hate to have him sedated. Any advice would be helpful. He is probably 14 years old the vet said. Love to you...Love to all...Kitten
Hey Vaperkitten,Wow! that sounds like such a tough situation..to be honest if he is that old,and because of his unfortunate situation,it might be best to just not do the nails. If he is stressing to the point of him releasing his anal glands, its to much for him..Its not uncommon. It sounds like you have done wonders for this poor pup..Maybe try another groomer or vet..Are you in the north jersey area?If you are i would give it a try for you.I wish you the best of luck.Keep in touch, and let us know if you find any solutions..Good Luck, and God Bless..
Thanks so much for answering my question and offering to give it a try but unfortunately I live in California. He has an appointment today, hopefully it be ok, I don't know if it is best if I go with him inside or let them take him in the back to do it, he may act better if I am not there but I don't want him to think I am abandoning him because I never will.
I think its better if you just let them take him back. They tend to do act up more if the owners are around..I hope they can get it done,to help the little guy out..Let us know how you made out..Good Luck.
Well, you are 100% correct, he was not happy they came out to get him and he fought it best he could for a Chihuahua. About 4 minutes later they brought him back out and his nails looked great and he had gotten a rabies shot, he was happy and wagging his tail to see me. So like you said, if I am not with him he is good, but when I am there he is impossible. Thanks so much for the advice. I made another appointment for next month to keep it up....I think George and I can handle this and keep it up. Your support really helped me make it in to the office because I was ready to reschedule I was so scared to take him in, I realize I am silly but I just love him so much and cannot communicate with him the way I wish I could. Love to you...Love to all...Kitten
That is such good news!! Your not silly at all.The fact that you worry about him, shows how much you love, and care about him.We should all be so lucky..Im so glad it worked out..keep in touch with us,and if you have any questions,or suggestions, let us know...

True. Other videos are zoomed out way too much and you can’t even see the nails and have no clue what they are doing
Ouch! That must have been painful to have nails so long! Thanks for the video
How long would would you leave it for the vain to recede before cutting again?
Good question. He never addresses that.
I’d like to know that too!

A very helpful video I have been looking for a way to do this to my dog for like 3 years!
BM Vlogs..Thank You so much..
This video made me pay attention to the tips of their pads. Then I checked my dogs and they had little black dots and hard grainy rock pieces coming out. Sanded em smooth. Dry.. been soaking their feet in Epsom salt and keeping em clean.
Overly long nails also throws the dogs gait out which later on leads to arthritic joints pushed out of position. Great video.
Thank You you for adding, and your kind comment Lauras Life....Good Luck with your dog training..
Good advice 👍
Thank you so much for watching us

That's a good dog allowing you to cut such grown nails!
How long woukd you have to wait to clip a little further back?
about a week
Will the quick begin to shorten with regular nail trims going forward?
In some dogs it does. Not all dogs. Sometimes once the quick overgrows it never recedes no matter how hard you try. Frankly I think this dog should have been sedated and the nails cut back to about half the length they ended up here, to give him a fresh start. These nails are really far too long to be safe, even after cutting.
There are nail trimming techniques to get the quick to receed, it is recommended to file down the top end of the nail after cutting.
@bethany kay glad u asked I was scrolling comments for this answer
How long should one wait for the quick to recede and cut more nail?
once a week
Great video, thank you!
Thank You..
How do you know where or how much you can take off safely?
I use a flash light to see where I can cut
Then your dog doesn't have black nails.
So if the vein grows out further does it ever recede when you trim the nails down to length
It recedes gradually, and with clipping the nail consistently, over time..
Weekly?
@@ellybean5868 exactly that..Short amounts, once a week..Our How To Clip Black nails video, may help you,on how to determine where the vein is
very informative!... thanks for posting 🐾
Thank You for watching Kathryn..
Okay, wow! hahaha. Thank you!
Barbi Ruth I never knew that!! I’ll have to try it, my dog has darker brown nails and it’s hard to get them as short as her white ones
Will the vein recede ? And then you can clip more?
Poor dog! Poodles often seem to have extremely long talons, not sure why. A nail trim every 10 days or so is what I do with our Whippet, taking off just maybe 1mm at a time.
Thanks but how long to wait to cut nails shorter to where they need to be?
You can cut nails once a week,to once every 2 weeks
Will the vein recede when the nails are cut?
Thank you, this was very helpful
Thank You Blush,anytime..Appriciate you watching..
Thank you
When they get that long, can you ever get them back to normal length or is it a matter of what's done is done?
🙋 QUESTION: Once a dog's nails are too long.. how do u get the quick to recede so he has normal little short nails again?
I wish someone answered this
You cut as much as you can without hitting the vein.
If the nails are very long how soon can you trim them again.?? My doxie panicks when we do her nails..!
A week
How were you able to get about 3mm or 4mm of nail off without cutting his quik? How soon would you retrim? How long would it take to get his nails short and comfortable? Thanks for the vid!
Hard to tell in the vid,but i can see approx..where the quik is,and I'm very practiced as well..This dog in particular, came back 3 weeks later, and i was able to get them back a little further..You can usually, correct the overgrown problem in a month, but in a case like this, the dog will feel immediate relief, simply because the nail is no longer lifting the digit ..Thank You so much for watching..
@@GroomingByRudy You're The Best Rudy! Thanks mate ☺
So if I'm trying to bring the nail closer to optimum length.....how long after the first cut can I do another trim? To "chase the quick" back a bit.
Awenda18 This was my question, too.
About a week..Do them every week,for a month,and they should go back a bit.Dogs vary...
how long before you can cut them again?
Every week
Will the vein retract to make it possible to clip them back further?
It will slightly, but you have clip, and grind often.Once a week..
Excellent video. Quick question. What is the ideal length of a nail to aim for? I've seen very short nubs and i've seen just off the floor. Thanks
Is it best to trim dogs nails after a bath..like leaving them to soak a bit in water make it more easy
You can do it either way,but sometimes its better to do it before the bath,in case you hit a vein, you can wash it off,and also, the nail softening, can make it more sensitive..
ive read that those veins will "retract" as you trim the nails back. anyone know if thats true?
I just rescued a baby like this. His nails are very log but they are black. I can't tell how far to cut. Is there any advice on that? I'm not able to take him anywhere seeing as I'm recently in isolation due to health reasons.
Check out our..How to clip black nails video...
Thank you so much for watching us
On average how long would it take for something like this to happen? Months ?
How do the nails to go back to normal, does the quick recede after a while?
@@baklash1762 Thanks! Just wondered 🐕
How long after trimming or grinding the nail does the quick push back, so you can do another trim?
You trim back a little further in a week,or so..
Thank you Thank you !
Thank You for watching micah..
What if you Cut half of the nail with its nerve..would it heal after and be shorter?? i hate to have my dog's nail too long..i have the same issue but kinda shorter than that witch nails lol...
My dog needs to take notes on how to behave calmly when she is getting her nails clipped from the dog in this video.
Thank you...great video...
My uncle pugs nails are overgrown. They’re going back to her pad. Not not mention that she is really overweight and is walking funny.
TY for the tip
Thank You so much for watching ...
Will the quick shorten up with good nail care
It will retract, with regular maintenance, although with nails as long as the dog featured in this video,it would take some, and extra care..Thank you for watching.
So if the quick grows with the nail, does that mean that dog is going to have that long ugly nail for the rest of its life or will the quick shrink back allowing for more nail to be taken off later?
It will shrink back,if you stay on it,and clip them often, like once a week, till they go back..
When nails get this overgrown, will you eventually be able to clip more nail off with regular grooming?
Yes..Once a month grooming,problem solved..
Shoot I thought it was a good video very informative... then I spot dislikes laugh my ass off
lol yea it is very hard to make everybody happy on youtube. However at least the 885 people who liked it feel the same as you do. Thanks so much!
U could also try using a nail grinder as i find it easier to trim it closer to the quick without causing bleeding :)
watched couple vids of vets saying grinding and or cutting the top of the nail is the correct method ,this seems the opposite of how the nail would naturally wear down from walking . so conflicting info from vets makes me unsure how to go about technique, can you give your opinion on vets reccomending cutting the top of nail and staying away from bottom ?
island boy so what I think I’ve figured out is when you’re trying to shorten the nail you grind/cut from the top and it helps make the quick recede.
hi im a first time dog owner, i just wanna ask how would i know if the vein is there or like how would it look like so i can avoid it once i clip her nails.
And gait?
Yes. Absolutely..Posture, and gate as well..We appreciate you
You stated that the vein also grows with with the nail, so after the dog's nails start getting clipped again does the vein start to recede?
we take our dog to the vet but he hates the muzzle and getting his nails clipped. How do we overcome his anxiety/aggression to having his nails cut? He almost bites us or vet assistants when we try.
Im sorry that is the case for you.You are not alone,it is very common that a lot of dogs hate to have there nails clipped Can your vet maybe give him something to calm him down before they do it? ..Good Luck..Thank You so much for watching..
tried that. didn't work. No one wants to cut his nails. Including us.@@GroomingByRudy

My dogs nails are much much longer than that. They look like hooks pretty much but he doesnt let me cut his nails. Last time we had to take him to the vet to put him to sleep for them to cut. I'm considering CBD for dogs. Maybe it will calm him? What clips are you using?

Could you tell me how often I should clip my dogs nails? I rescued 2 and their nails are like this. How long does it take to get them back to normal?
