Taking care of your dog’s nails is an often overlooked aspect of dog care. In my day job at a boarding facility, I often see dogs belonging to owners who just pay for a bath at each visit, while their dogs nails go untouched. Just last week, I saw the devastating affect overgrown nails can have with a small chihuahua whom had nails so long they were growing into her paw pads. The worst part of this situation was not the nail piercing the paw pad (or in other cases I have seen, the common infection that occurs as a result), it’s how it affects the dog’s walking ability. It was obvious that the nails had been overgrown for so long, that the poor dog’s paw structure (bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles) had been permanently altered from walking with her paw curled. Unfortunately the damage at this point was too severe and likely permanent without a corrective surgery. She walked with a severe limp before and a severe limp after those nails were shortened to an acceptable length. A simple monthly nail trim would have spared her from this permanent handicap.
I share the story above to highlight the very serious consequences that nail neglect can have on a dog’s life. I’ve never seen a dog tear tendons or have their foot bone structure permanently change because they’re overdue for a bath. But, baths often take priority for most dog owners over any other grooming needs, when they’re usually a bath is last on the totem pole of necessity. Owners love when their dogs smell good, but I always care more about if the dog feels good!
The most common affect from overgrown nails is the sprawling of a dog’s paw to adjust. Instead of sitting high on their feet, the foot sprawls down, the bones extend and the foot lays flat on the floor. The toes often slant to one side to accommodate that long nail. Once the foot is this deformed, it is often the way it will stay. Other affects include: nails cracking/splitting and nail injury from the nail getting caught in something.
If you'd like to learn about keeping your dogs teeth clean we have a great video on that too ruclips.net/video/uryYtL3Y2RM/видео.html
I've been doing this for around 20yrs. You have a short coated dog, so for those who have dogs with long coats, and or fluffy feet here a quick tip. Take a pair of tights, pop socks, stockings or even a sock. Slide it over the dogs paw, make a little hole and push the nail through the hole. This will hold back any fur and prevent it from being ripped out in a giant clump if it gets caught and wrapped round the dremel bit. The material will jam up the dremel and stop it, whereas the fur offers no resistance and is painfully torn out.
Literally the BEST video about trimming dog's nails on the internet!
The close up shots were a life saver! Thank you!!! Not enough dog nail videos get that close or do slow mo for viewers.
Thank you!
Absolutely!

Even though I've used the Dremel for my dogs' nails for years, I was a bit nervous when I got my black dog/with black nails. Your's is the best video I've seen yet, and I've watched many! Thank you for the detail close-ups.
thank you so so much!
@DougHinVA black nailed dogs make it much, much harder to see the "quick" to prevent hurting the pup by grinding down on a nerve or blood vessel. White nailed dogs are pretty easy to see if you use a back light. They're not saying anything mean, it's just the facts, and this video was very helpful for dog parents looking to trim nails at home safely. Calm down.
This is the best and most clear trimming video I have even seen! Thanks so much
thank you!!
I so appreciate your video. Like others have said - the closeup shots are what I needed to see. Thanks so much!
I purchased Dremel Pet Grooming Kit from Home Depot for 29.99
It arrived today, my dogs were a bit nervous, Belgian Malinois, but with some treats+soothing voice, this was easy :).
My dogs are 2 years old, never had their nails cut, less than an inch long.
It took me 10 minutes to do both dogs, first time cutting their nails on first day it was received.
This thing is a lifesaver, and I will never ever use Clippers again.
This video helped me get rid of the jitters, because man i was so nervous myself doing this to my dogs! I did not want this to be painful for them and IT IS NOT!.
Very good tool. I highly recommend.
that's awesome!! thank you so much for sharing!
Of all the videos yours is the VERY! best. My friend had a min pin that hated it when his nails were being clipped. He would begin to yelp the moment the clippers were brought out. I grew up on a ranch and to calm one of my horses to have the Vet work on her, we'd put a towel over her eyes. I told my friend to cradle her dog on his back like you did and pulled a tube sock with toe end cut off, over his eyes. And from then on, she had no problems doing his nails. I introduced my friend to the Dremel method and now she is able to do all 3 of her small dogs nails fast and without hitting the quick line on those dogs with black nails.
This video helped immensely. Your instruction with close ups and slow motion made all the difference!! Thank you!
THANK YOU!!! I've had someone to trim my Chi's nails until a few months ago. I've been trying various ways all without much success. Between explaining things clearly and the slow motion demonstration in your video has given me enough confidence to take of my boy's nails. THANKS AGAIN!
so glad it helped!
Thank you for the advice! I've been using a cheap $20 dog nail grinder for the last year but just made the investment in an actual Dremel Lite. Very excited to have something that won't skip constantly after a few minutes. I never thought to grind the top of the nail, it might even make them less sharp as they grow back.
thanks for commenting! i appreciate the kind words :)
THANK YOU!! WONDERFUL VIDEO!!❤
I know this is two years old, but I’ve started to dremel my collies nails instead of cutting because of safety reasons and the quick. Though I wanted to say excellent choice of background music! I adore Modest Mouse too 😊😊
Great video - Really like the slow-motion to get the close up. Thank you!
This is absolutely the best nail dremel video I have seen. Thank you!
Thank you!
Man I forgot how much I love modest mouse
An absolutely amazing video. Thanks so much. I just adopted 2 retired racing greyhounds, and their nails were in need of trimming. Finally I got the dremel, and started with just brief sessions. Weekly I've been extending the amount of time I spend using it. They are adapting to it very well. They are also black dogs with black nails so this video was a godsend for that reason. Thanks again.
thank you so much! Im glad I could help! If you would subscribe it would mean a whole lot to me, if not thanks again for watching :)
Probably the best nail trimming video I've watched. Very helpful 👍
thank you!
Strawberry's puppy ess is cuteness overload! ❤
Great vid like others have said the close ups really help to get a feel for what we are aiming for. dont agree 100% about white nails being easier hard or easy depends on the dog staying still and relaxed.
Thank you! I cut the quick with clippers once and my dog has always freaked out at the sight of them. I've had a Dremel but never knew how to grind his nails. He sat still and did great!
The chihuahua story broke my heart.
It was hard to deal with :( unfortunately I think a lot of people just don’t know how important it is
Great video. With smaller sessions in the beginning and treats after every nail... my dog has finally relaxed after only a few sessions.
thankyou thats the best example of trimming dogs claws that ive seen, ittl give me confidence to proceed to do my dogs!
As others have said, and I agree 100%, you have surpassed all the other videos on how to use a Dremel to groom dog nails (especially black nails). I have a 100-pound Anatolian shepherd mix with thick, quick growing black nails. He tolerates nail grooming sessions pretty well (doesn't love it, of course, but he puts up with it). I have used both clippers and dremel with him, and he seems to prefer the dremel.
I'm going to try transitioning him to the "on his back between my legs" position like your dog. That position appears to provide added comfort, control, and safety for both the groomer and the dog.
I have a couple of questions that I thought might have been discussed in comments under the video but haven't seen mentioned yet. What grit sandpaper drum are you using, and what speed on the dremel?
thank you so so much for the kind words!
Grit doesn't really matter too much, a finer grit will mean it takes a little longer but you have more control, so I just use whatever I have available and whatever is cheap in bulk from Amazon dn adjust accordingly.
speed is usually 6-8, basically fast enough so it doesn't skip at all, but not so fast its hard to control
THIS IS SO HELPFUL!!!
thank you!
This dog reminds me of mine. So nervous. She hates getting her nails trimmed even though I’ve never hit her quick. When I picked her up at 9 weeks of age, the breeder obviously had just clipped her nails cause one of them was bloody. They obviously don’t forget and it’s been a nerve wracking experience and a struggle for all I involved ever since.
Great, informative, and well explained video with the close-ups! Well done! You have helped me get more confident with dremeling my Cocker's nails. Thank you so much!
So I work at a pet shop and I just started two weeks ago. We do nail trims and I’ve been apprenticing and I do my first dog tomorrow. We do a clip, dremel combo and my first dog is going to be a Doberman and I’m a little more confident now. Thank you !
thanks for sharing! im sure you'll do great, let us know how it goes :)
@VonHohenhallaDobermans It didn’t go so well. I was frustrated and can’t seem to get the rounding down. I always accidentally do a point. But I am going to keep getting better!
Great detail and SLO Motion was excellent
Great video. I really appreciate the zoomed in slow motion part
Thank you!
Great video, nice background music
Thank you for the video! Very informative and great quality! I love your dogs!
Yes! Why are you the only one I’ve heard mentioning the drill heating the nail?!
experience I guess!
Excellent video! The up close slow motion is awesome!!!
Good tips, thanks for this video. I have been using for years now, a Dremel like, battery powered tool, that has a plastic guard that goes around the sanding wheel allowing you to insert 1 nail to grind and then this guard would protect the other nails and paw from coming in contact with the sanding wheel. But I have found it easier to file/trim the nails with this guard removed. I found this tool at a PetCo (or PetSmart) around 20 yrs ago, so do not know if they still sell this tool for filling a dogs nails.
Excellent video - Thank you
Definitely will heat up
Keep moving the Dremel around
Great video! Clear instructions, thanks for the closeups! Although I dremel my dog's black nails, I wasn't sure how to take it back to where I wanted it to end up without quicking him. Interestingly, he and his mother both have nails that grow faster than they can wear down, but hers are white, so easy to work with. My other ( all very active) dogs' nails all stay short with natural wear.
Thank you for the compliments! Black nails. sure are a lot more difficult than white ones!
Close up great!
Thank you for this video! Impressed by how calm your dog is during the dremel process. I didn't get my mini Schnoodle girls used to having their paws handled, and they are a ball of nerves when their nails are clipped. I just bought a dremel, and used it for the first time. A better experience than using the clipper, but we have a ways to go before they're anything like calm! I intend to use CBD for the next several weekly sessions, along with treats after each nail...we'll see how that works! Thanks again!
Thanks for making this video. Great instructions and very helpful.
thank you
Thanks for your video! Really good shots. Always good to see what's needed. Now, what do you do if your dog won't let you touch her paws with clippers or drimmel? I'm gonna just touch one toe today. Two tomorrow. And so on. And then or maybe concurrently, adding the drimmel by touching it running to her paws with treats after each touch! Hope it works. I guess, all I've got is time. It would be so much easier if my pooch could understand English (or Spanish or German!).
Thanks for the great shots in this video. I was thinking that part underneath the nail, that looks concave and a different texture, was part of the quick. Now I see it is not and I can dremel that area and take my dogs nails back even further
Thank you for this. I've been having trouble using clippers because my dog has black nails
This is great. I have to try this on my GSD.
you did a GREAT! job.
Super helpful info & filming! Thank you!
Thank you, what an excellent video, well done 👏
Gotta love a dobie ❤️
Dude this video is amazing! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you, this is a really awesome and very useful video. I subscribed and will look into your other content. Your dog looks really sweet as she is going through the process. I have a dog who has nail deformities due to not being taken care of for years by the hunter who was using her. This video gives me a good base to approach her first nail session. In the end it will be nicer for me to do it than the groomer.
Thanks for the video man!
Wow! What a great video! Thank you so much!
Thank you soooo much!!This is really going to help me👍🏼👍🏼
Great video, loved the up close video. Thank you, first time I had a dog with black nails, youR video helped me freak out.
Good video appreciate how much detail you gave. I’ve always used standard clippers on my dogs and we just decided we should for switch to a Dremel. My concern was only on doing this with my black nail dogs. Pretty sure I’ll be good now though
Its really not that bad as long as you take it slow. Do it a few times and you'll be a pro. Black nails aren't as difficult as people make them out to be.
thank you for this great video
Modest Mouse!!! ❤ Great video! Thank you!!!
My Pitt hates it she gets so scared but she has black big nails so this helps a lot thank you!!
I been doing wrong thanks to this video I know what to do👏
Fantastic video.
Great info! Thanks
Thank you 😊
Thank you for this video
I have a Poochon that has black nails. I got my dremmel yesterday and I will start grinding his nails slowly. The dremmel has an LED light so I hope it helps with the quick. I wish he had white nails, but he has black. Thanks for the video.
Thank you!!!
This was oddly satisfying watching you trim those nails. I have a few questions. What speed do you usually set on your Dremel? What grit sandpaper do you use?
6-8 for speed, grit i just get whatever cheap in bulk on amazon, thank you so much for watching!
awesome video! I would like to see how exposed I should leave my dogs nails. Maybe on a different video? Also I am using the Dremel 3000, what speed do you use your Dremel in to trim your dog’s nails?
you should leave the quick as exposed as possible, since when it hits the ground it will recede. usually between 6-8 depending on the dog, but you'll get a feel for what youre most comfortable with. If its skipping when you're grinding you have it way too slow
How much pressure do you apply? Or just let the drummer glide over nails? Thanks for the slow motion shots!!! I have a 1-year old male corgi.
you'll learn really quickly how much pressure to apply,. go soft at first and then add more as you get use to it.
Thanks! Awesome video. What speed on the Dremel are you using and what grit are the sanding wheels?
Usually between a 6-8 but sometimes ill go a little faster if I've got to get through a lot of nail. 60 grit usually but its not super important to have an exact grit I've used whatever's available before and haven't had issues.
I've have yet to find a video that someone has horses and hasn't used the Dremel method on a horses hooves. I had a horse that had a hoof injury and the vet was called to tend to it, he trimmed it back, medicated it and said to keep it dry with this barrier boot. Said he'd come back in 8 wks to trim, medicate, and make sure no infection set in. But I'd been feeding a recommended feed that a friend had in her feed/suppy store. It was formulated by a Vet that worked on racehorses that had hoof injuries. It had bio-tin that promoted fast hoof growth. Well the normal hoof growth the vet thought would be 6-8 wks was shorted like 2 wks the hoof growth on my horses injured foot was so fast the barrier boot wouldn't stay on. So my neighbor brought over his metal grinder with heavy duty sanding pads and took off the over grown toe of the injured foot to get the barrier boot back on, 8 weeks later the Vet was shocked at the fast the hoof had healed and grown in 2 week intervals and even more amazed at not having farrier nippers and file to trim it to using the sander pads on a grinder tool.
thanks for sharing, interesting story!
how coarse is the sandpaper on that Dremel head?
Great video. I’ve been trying to figure out how to recede the qwik.
So it’s more full exposure, as in, all around the nail, versus just shaving the tip down?
My dog has white nails, which is helpful, but after your video, I need to work on my technique with the rounding motion. I try, but she wiggles her paws. I’ve been doing a few everyday. She tolerates WAY better than the nail clippers.
Additional question: nails should not be clacking on hardwood floors right? I thought I read that, thats a good indicator of the length and if you do hear them when they’re walking around, thats an indication they’re too long.
I’m trying to recede the qwik so I’m not hearing her clicking and clacking around the apartment.
yeah i grind all the way around, that way it takes more time for it to grow back.
correct if you can hear the nails that means theyre too long, ideally theyre small little nubs, but you have to be really dedicated to get there but one you do its a breeze to maintain
If I could just get my pup used to the sound of the dremel.. poor pup is scared out of his mind with it… along with vacuums and other small appliances that make the high frequency sounds. Been using a dremel on him since he was tiny and he’s over a year old, just as scared now as he was before. He sits still but shakes sooooo bad, breaks my heart.
Any tips for that?
He has black nails so I get nervous every time, so your video is very helpful.
Some pups just always have a hard time with, just stay consistent and go slow
I have even used a Dremel to clean my teeth
My problem is I rescued an abused lab/pit mix with a lot of fear. She was tied up and thrown out of a moving vehicle. She had to chew off the ropes from her legs and they are all scared. Therefore, she will not let me touch her paws. What kind of relaxation medicine or something that I can use to trim her nails. The kennel I take her to said it took 4 people to hold her down and they only got one nail and the cut it too short and it bled...so she will not let you near her paws. They are very overgrown and walking her on cement or on the road has not helped. Do I need to take her to the vet and put her out to have it done?
I would try a really good muzzle and then a cage muzzle on top of that, and then try it they way im showing here. if you came to me for boarding that's what I would do to get them done. the problem is that she's only had negative experiences with it, especially with it getting cut too short. She needs to start having neutral experiences where here paws are handled and nails dremeled without it hurting, then eventually it will get easier and easier. I would do a vet as a last resort but there are some pups who just have to go to the vet to get it done. good luck!
@@VonHohenhallaDobermans Thank you for your help. I wish you lived in Texas so I could take her to you!
What grit are you using in this video?
What grit sandpaper are the Dremel bits you prefer?
Love these videos. Not picking on this one..
But all the ones that are like "if you do their nails once a week, especially if you do them correctly they won't grow as fast or as much".
Well no shit! You are doing it every week! They don't have time to grow. Lol
haha good point! the main idea is that the quick will recede if you do it often, where if you just do it as a maintenance every month the quick will stay the same so they won't ever actually get "shorter"
What is the RPM speed of the Dremel?
My question too.
I got distracted by Modest Mouse
My first time hearing their music...I wondered who this was!
Our dogs wouldn't lay for nails. We bought a grooming table and it made a world of difference. Dogs are comfortable standing on the table and the work positions are much easier too. Picture a farrier working with a horse.
glad you found something that works for you! its all about finding what works the best
I’ve only ever used clippers on our dog. She absolutely hates it and I can only get a couple done before she completely freaks out. It takes me a few days to do her nails. I watched your video and the dremel tool looks faster and less chance of damaging the quick. I have a dremel tool in my workshop but it looks like there are ones made for nail trimming . Is there a difference or can I use my work shop dremel
I would use your work shop Dremel. the dogs ones don't have a lot of power, and break/gunk up pretty easily.
@@VonHohenhallaDobermans it is quite loud. I’ve seen videos of ones that are designed specifically for dogs nails that are quieter and run slower so they won’t heat the nail up as much
@@joeszymanski6936 on average I spend 10-15 seconds per nail, sometimes less so the heat factor doesn't really come into play imo but you should get what works for you!
@@VonHohenhallaDobermans I was hoping someone would ask this question. I bought a dog nail trimmer, which is not too powerful enough. It's taking a while to finish one nail. I will try using an actual workshop Dremel like you use. Great video!
@@deborarubin2889 thank you!

Why are you doing the top of the nail??
Hey Alex! Couple reasons:
1. If you’re doing it as a service for a customer it shows more easily that you worked on that nail
2. The more you take off all areas, that’s an area that will have to grow back, meaning it will last longer
whats that amaying background musik? :D
A modest mouse remix, sorry it’s been so long I’m not sure the exact song
What speed should the Dremel be? I have a dremel 3000.
usually a 6-8, fast enough so it doesn't skip
What about the nail dust thats visible getting on the dogs eyes...
it gets in my eyes too, after nail dremels i give baths but even without it doesn't cause irritation, its just dust.
How were you able to grind so much off at once? I'm always so worried I'm gonna go too far.
lots of practice! better to be careful than hurt them
I have a dremel but not the sand paper circle thingy. What is it called and is it expensive? What store can you buy it at?
You will need a mandrel and some sanding sleeves/bands/drums (all the same thing) that fit it. Mandrels and sleeves come in various sizes so must be matched. The sleeve in this video appears to be a 1/2” which is good for medium to large dogs. I have a small dog and have 1/4”. Also the drums come in different grits. He was using 60 grit which are more coarse/aggressive than 120 grit. All available on Amazon, and pet stores. Lots of people buy the wrong size sleeve for their mandrel. Read the ratings…especially the low ones.
I didn’t know you dremel the TOP of the nail.
fine but my dog is 5 years old
Good news is it’s not impossible to teach an old dog new tricks
I’m looking to purchase a dremel is there one you would recommend?
www.amazon.com/Dremel-4000-2-Performance-Attachments-Accessories/dp/B002L3RUVG/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=YSPZJCL8WXT3&keywords=dremel&qid=1689176238&sprefix=dremel%2Caps%2C119&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1
What rpm do you have your dremel at?
Usually at 7-8 but really depends on how comfortable you are and how new the sandpaper is. General rule is make the speed so it doesn’t skip when using it
Ion got that i have dog clippers tho
Wish you'd have showed what the quick looks like, i.e., where to stop
I don’t see how that makes a difference? Could have videoed from under?
What grit is used?
I don't really check I usually just buy in bulk from amazon and use every different one that comes
