It was about crib death. "y’know, baby suddenly dies, the sandman killed it," the Metallica frontman described it in 2007 - and it's destructive effect on the family unit. Indeed, the line “Off to never never land” was originally “Disrupt the perfect family," according to Ulrich.
This song has always resonated with me. I just thought it was a song that makes me get speeding tickets. But I have had simply horrific nightmares my whole life. I never connected the two until today. I think I might take a closer look at my playlist and see what else I can learn about myself. Thank you.
Good to see this music being appreciated. When I was younger, my parents insisted it was worthless noise. But then again, they thought Liberace was the apex of music. I feel validated nowadays that people recognise what it was that I found in this music.
4:25 I've never really talked about this, but after a long bender with alcohol I had a long period of insomnia and after that, every time I went to sleep, I would wake up about 30 minutes later in a terror, not knowing where I was or what was happening. Thinking I was in mortal danger. I was afraid to go to sleep for a few days until it thankfully passed.

What I pick up from this song is the intro and outro… the build up and beat coupled with the clashing symbols at the start. Then ending with a slow fade away …. Think approaching thunder storm at night, it’s settling in over your home and it’s passing. The rumbling drums at the start is the first pattering, build up of rain and rolling thunder. The increased symbol clashes are the increasing and nearing lightning strikes…. Musically it will always be a thunderstorm at night to me.
Fun fact, this song was originally about SIDS sudden infant death. The record company thought that was too dark and depressed for the first single so they changed it to childhood bad dreams.
It started out as a song about crib death according to James. It morphed into what you heard here. I think never never land was akin to limbo ( in the Catholic sense).
Outlaw Torn by Metallica needs to be next followed by Low Man's Lyric, Fixxxer, Bleeding Me, unnamed feeling, unforgiven III, No Leaf Clover, - Human. But DEFINITELY Outlaw Torn!
@MetalFamily8680 Outlaw Torn got me through the two lowest and hardest times in my life. The build up to and the wheeping solo, to me is blowing off so much steam and gives a feeling of being liberated from such heavy feelings. Just as important and deep as the lyrics in that song.
My favorite cover of this song is by a band from Monterrey Mexico called The Warning. I discovered them back in March and they quickly became my favorite band. Their cover is more of a re-imagining and they did it as part of The Blacklist Album which is a 30th anniversary celebration of the Black album consisting of a bunch of covers. Since it's a cover, maybe it wouldn't be the best song by The Warning to react to on this channel, but they have a wide selection of original songs that would be great for reactions on this channel. Their lyrics are deep and introspective. Their work frequently delves into emotional and psychological landscapes making their music great for "Therapist Reacts" Analyzing their lyrics can provide insight into complex emotional states and the human condition. Their latest album, Keep Me Fed, has songs that address various themes such as god complexes, fear of not living fully, consequences of others' mistakes, taunting and manipulation, relationships, unhealthy coping mechanisms, perfectionism, judgment, and the complexities of touring.

Your interpretation of these lyrics made me think of Silent Lucidity by Queensryche, which is from the point of view of a father comforting a child who has just woken from a nightmare and explaining dreams and the subconscious to the child--in an age-appropriate way. That's another song I'd recommend.
This really makes me wanna hear your thoughts on the Unforgiven trilogy. Or like... the entirety of Load/Reload. The House That Jack Built, 2x4... etc.
Most of my life, I have had VERY vivid dreams, some very nice dreams and some horrible dreams. I often have the same or similar dreams, sometimes every few nights, other times just once or twice a year, at least the ones I remember. I think the most common couple of dreams I have are dreams where I wake up at 57 yo and realize I never finished a required college course and I still have to finish it, lol. The other one is related to when I used to manage a Pizza Hut. 20 years later, I still sometimes dream that I'm somehow still stuck doing that job, but in very strange situations, like running a mobile Pizza Hut in the back of an 18 wheeler, while it's going down the highway, probably because I also was a truck driver for several years, lol.
Well to understan metallic and other bands you should tisten to thecGod that failed and the unforgiven all music is connected with one story and if you really listen it has one track mind all over the bord sad but true
Just watched all your Metallica reactions! Good job, with great analysis!! I would like to suggest "Radiohead - Creep (Best live performance)". This performance of Tom Yorke is amazing, and the video could be great content for your channel.
Honestly I think you'd enjoy Tetrastructural Minds by Vektor. The song touches a lot on sanity, the subconscious, how memory is related to that and how the past always seems brighter for some reason. I think you could get a lot mileage out of that song alone.
Yep, sometimes you have to embrace the horror. Im a very no BS type of person. I dont beat around the bush, I dont sugar coat anything. You have to learn how to say the things that are hard to say. And you have to learn how to tackle the things that hold you back. For a healthy you, you dont have a choice. You have to embrace the horror and give it the finger.
Dream interpretation is one of my favorite subjects of all time. Take it from me, there is no definitive dream dictionary/ encyclopedia. What symbols and images mean to one person will not mean the same thing to the next person. The best way to decipher dreams is to find someone who will just listen to you talk about the dream. You start by explaining the events of the dream and just let yourself talk aloud, open up about the emotions and thoughts that enter your head as you do so and if you are honest and open with that person about it, the realization just hits you. That is why dream dictionaries do not work that well, because dreams are directly related to the things going on in your personal life. It is not about symbolism, direct interpretation, or translation. If I am not mistaken this song and the video is obviously about the fear of going to sleep and how little comfort prayer can offer you, because that prayer we all know is quite morbid and dark if you think about it. I like and understand what you are saying Taylor, but I DO NOT feel it with this song. It has always been a dark and ominous experience for me.

As an American lad, in the 70's, I knew of the character before both this song and me reading the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman.
