  • The PlayStation Portal has officially released and I've gotten my hands on one! This remote play only device offers a way to play your PS5 in a small portable handheld form, so long as you have wifi to connect to and its strong enough to keep the gameplay looking smooth. Let's unbox it, turn it on for the first time, and see how this new kind of PlayStation handheld works out.

    What I want to know is if it has "nearby" functionality like the Vita and PS4. For those who don't know, the PS4 and Vita had a specific connection when they were in each other's vicinity called Nearby which would allow you to do remote play without an internet connection. You had to be closer to the console, but the lag is negligible and the artifacting is non existent when you're at the correct distance. To activate the feature you just make sure the "connect directly to PS Vita/PSTV" box is ticked

      Yeh and you could also play your ps3 via remote play via the psp and vita lol it as if we are going backwards lol there is absolutely no need for this it’s basically a paperweight you would be better off buying another tv for the same money or something like a steamdeck

      The PSP kind of had it with the PS3. for the most part, u could only use the PSP as a controller, tho.

    I'm just shocked that Sony did not implement a direct wireless connection akin to the Wii U, so that it would have a better connection and experience... They poorly implemented this in the PS Vita/PS4, and it didnt work as well as using a local wifi network, so maybe thats why.. But surely that could have done better this time. They could provided a charge dock that plugs in to the PS5, that also doubles as a wireless transmitter (with an additional wifi band) to get it to work better. Or maybe even implement a wireless hdmi like setup with the PS5s USB c port.... It's not like anyone is going to take this massive thing out of their house anyways...

      I think they did a good job, got this thing 2 days now and love it. I play in bed and mainly single player. Works great IF you got decent router / internet connection at home. I'm using an archer, my PS5 is connected wireless. I get 215mbps and it works. Played 2 hours yesterday, no lag, no glitching al fun.
      I see myself playing more on this, when my kids take over the tv screen in the living. Fun to hang around on the couch while playing on my portal.

      I’ve been taking it outside of my house since I bought it. You all need to stop trying to speak for a majority of people. Speak for yourselves. I don’t like moving my ps5 from room to room, I have gigabit speeds, where I live in md I have access to good WiFi via metro/work/doctors office at Walter Reed, everything working great for me. Id much rather use this than remote playing on my phone and using focus mode.

    It's a Sony Backbone with a screen. The Backbone does the same streaming with any phone. This looks more durable. The Backbone looks like it could break a phones charge port. The PS4 also has a streaming app for phones. The VITA streams with PS3 and PS4. So this is like a VITA without it's own games on the go. Downside is your console has to be on to use this. You can't stream directly from PS Plus Premium. You have to have a PS5 console on for it to stream from PS Plus.

    I got to agree with a lot of people describing this as a Wii U gamepad, singing how you have to have a PS5 nearby.
    It be cheaper and better to just get the Backbone for your phone to play games remotely anywhere and it could be used to play other games that aren't PlayStation.

      Where’s the convience of buying a $200 controller that’s larger than a Duel Sense? Is it that hard to toss a controller in your bag? Is glueing together your screen and controller really worth $130?

    • @XxkrazymagexX
      @XxkrazymagexX 7 месяцев назад

      @@JakeyJonesyour phone becomes immediately useless if you remote play. You can literally use no other function of your phone without it disconnecting your session . It kills your phone battery and you need 2 devices to play comfortably. The portal also connects way faster than your phone does and I mean it significant. I got the fold 4 and it connects faster than that .

    • @JakeyJones
      @JakeyJones 7 месяцев назад

      When you’re on the go, the instances where you would want to connect and play your PS5 are very short sessions. Also your phone is not using any computing power to run the games, it’s just streaming them and logging the controller inputs. I’ve never had an issue with battery, and even if I did, phones have fast charging. I don’t know if the PS Remote Play app is different on the fold, but there’s an option in settings to have the game run in the background if you wanted to check a notification or put on a video without closing the session. Otherwise, gaming is a very focused activity that I don’t normally need to use my phone actively while doing. None of these problems are particularly notable, especially enough to justify a $200 device that’s larger than a controller. That’s not more convenient. If you really wanted to pay for a convenience, the backbone is $99 dollars and is slim enough to fit in a pocket. Or paying for an Ethernet cable makes your connection far faster. This device is too limited to be more useful than the current solutions.

    My biggest problem with this device and any other mix of devices you would use like an iPhone and a backbone for example is wifi latency. I have a wifi6 router with a Pixel 7 Pro and an S21+. I removed every wifi device from the network to cut down on congestion and I even changed the wifi channel to one thats not being used by surrounding neighbors and I still get dropped frames because of wifi latency. The experience is not smooth. And this isn't limited to just my PS5 but my gaming PC too where I use sunshine as a host and moonlight as a client. Both machines are hardwired as well.
    Maybe wifi6e improves on this? Idk but I work in IT and I understand networking pretty well. If I can't get a remote play device to work smoothly with no frame drops I can't imagine the frame drops the average user with an older wifi5 router will experience.

    Good review Kevin Kenson! I have the portal as well. It certainly looks wacky but it’s kind of already grown on me. It’s more comfortable and the screen looks great even for an LCD screen. I haven’t noticed a lot of lagging and if it is, you can’t tell it. I’m enjoying it despite what the critics are saying about it and even if it’s not Bluetooth or whatever.
