The Switch 2 Might be Just Right

  • With the current state of the games industry and the increasing costs of AAA games from Xbox and PlayStation, it seems as though Nintendo made the right call years ago focusing on game library and consistent releases over raw power. With rumors swirling that the Switch 2 may be comparable in power to the Xbox Series S, Nintendo might be in the perfect position to have a system that not only leverages their own strengths, but is positioned perfectly to see increased third party support for bigger, more demanding games that have thus far skipped out on the Switch. Some thoughts.

The Switch 's strength is in its library, it's the only console on the market right now that provides a wide variety of games for players of all ages. I think when people buy a Switch as a family console, they don't really care about power, they care about the games but also the prices of the games and of the console itself. Some games have become really expensive these days, and even if they look really amazing, times are rough. Some games are almost 80 euros, that's a lot of money. Making the Switch 2 less powerful than other consoles to keep the prices 'reasonable' can be a good strategy.

It's really dumb people to keep wanting to push power on a device meant for families. A high end switch at $500-$600 isn't going to go well for mom trying to buy something for her kids. $300 isn't great for something that can get destroyed by a child but it's at least stomachable for most families. Meanwhile MS/Sony are struggling to make sales because they're pricing out their customers.

The big hang up is porting code on the development end from other SKUs and supporting all tools to import into their SDK.

I think the industry overall can become more healthy if they start looking at the Switch 2 as their primary platform to develop games, and then make the same game available on other platforms such as Playstation, Xbox and PC.
A proof of this is what happened with Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. During development, the game was most likely targeted towards the Nintendo Switch console. And so they were able to release the game running at 1080p, 60FPS. There's not that many Switch games that can run at 1080p 60FPS. But because the Switch was the target hardware during development, the same game runs on a PS5 or Xbox Series X at 4k 120FPS. How many games can we say that run at 4k 120FPS on a PS5 or Xbox Series X? And they didn't need a PS5 Pro to do that.
So, I think that if the majority of gaming publishers starts making games targeted towards the Switch 2 as their main platform to develop games for, they can make the game run perfectly fine on Switch 2 hardware, run even better on PS5 and Xbox Series X, make the game accessible on more platforms and more consumers, and have better chances to profit. And if publishers profit more, maybe there's gonna be less layoffs and studio closures.

I agree to a point, I think many developers, especially those who couldn't make the jump to HD development chose the Wii as their main platform and many companies actually made tons of games, which is something that I can't really say about the Switch. I mean, the Switch has probably the best third-party support a main Nintendo console has had since the Wii, but at the same time it feels that most of the offerings from third-party publishers have been mostly late ports from previous genenerations. In some ways I can understand the fact that many developers were caght off-guard by the Switch's success, some other still consider investing on the Switch kind of risky and some other probably lack the resources to downport some of their games or are just probably wating for the Switch successor. I mean, the only major third-party games that were designed with the Switch's hardware in mind that were successful were Bayonetta 3, Monster Hunter: Rise, Shin Megami Tensei V, Momotaro Dentetsu and the majority of Team Asano's titles like Octopath Traveller and Triangle Strategy.
While I'm hopeful that more unique third-party games will be developed for the Swithc's successor, I'm trying to keep my expectations in check, I know many people are claiming that companies like Square-Enix will go all out on the next Switch, but aside from Dragon Quest XII, I don't think we'll see that many games made with the Switch's successor hardware in mind

Teraflops is fine to measure the compute power of a certain data type, life say fp32 or fp16.
Just make sure you aren't trying to compare PEAK THEORETICAL Tflops, because no architecture ever gets it's peak theoretical and they all fall short by different amounts.
Ampere vs rdna 1+/2- (switch 2 arch and ps5/series arch) is pretty comparable all things considered historically.
Chips and cheese did a great series of microbenches comparing the architectures. And while ampere comes out on top even against the infinity cache (rdna2 game consoles don't have infinity cache) it's fairly close, especially compared to the historical trend. Rdna2 was a great amd arch.
Of course modern games use more than just fp32, like fp16, which is where amd's 2X packed math(not parallel) and nvidias 8x tensor cores (parallel) come into play.

They literally haven’t made a new Mario kart or Smash in over 7 years. They took on a lot of 3rd party titles and that’s where the switch lacks. Ive seen so many people sell their Switch because of this reason alone.

Great video. I wanted to give a bit more context to your comparison. There has been shipping leaks of real components for the retail version of the Switch 2, one such leak is that it will use 12GB of LPDDR5X memory, this is above expectations, and becomes an even bigger advantage for Switch 2 when compared to the 10GB Xbox Series S, of which only 8GBs is available for games, which is by far the biggest weakness of the platform, and something Switch 2 avoids... Switch 2's allotment for games is 11GB of RAM, while PS5's is 13GB of RAM, this is a very small difference when you start putting the higher quality assets into the PS5 game, meaning RAM will be far less of an issue this time around, giving 3rd parties a big green light. Another shipping leak was the inclusion of 256GB UFS 3.1 flash storage, this puts it on par with the Xbox Series S/X storage speeds, and Switch 2 also comes with a decompression block speeding this up, much like PS5's storage is sped up, this means load times can be eliminated.
A last component of the Switch 2 when compared to Xbox and Playstation, is that Switch 2 has the RTX feature suite, this includes 12 Ray Tracing cores (which should allow it to do ray tracing at or above current gen consoles), and of course DLSS, this allows the Switch 2 to spend all of it's rendering power on 1/4th the pixels, and uses tensor cores via AI deep learning, to output a higher resolution, and while the AMD consoles can do something similar with FSR 2+, it requires part of the GPU's resources reserved for rendering the image. Basically if you are looking at XBSS and Switch 2 as both having 4TFLOPs (they will be not exactly the same performance even with the same flop count, it's still a valid metric for the tier of performance), All of Switch 2's 4TFLOPs can go to rendering a 720p image, and use those tensor cores to push the image to 1440p or even 4K, meanwhile Xbox Series S has to reserve some of it's 4TFLOPs to do FSR 2+ upscaling, and the upscaling simply doesn't hold up as well, so you might render at 720p and output at 1080p, or 1440p, and dare never push to 4K, and remember, Switch 2 has more RAM. I'll also highlight that last year in Germany, there was a leak from Nintendo's behind doors presentation that showed off the Matrix Awaking demo running better on Switch 2 than on Xbox Series S according to those in attendance, so this even bares out in the real world. It's worth noting here that DLSS could mean that Switch 2 could output similar resolutions to the PS5/Xbox Series X with the same graphics at half the frame rates, or smartly reduce some graphics and hit the same frame rates. One thing we might see is FF7Rebirth's performance mode that hit 1080p at 60fps, do either 1080p at 30fps or even 1440p at 30fps, the image might actually look sharper as well, because DLSS is just the best upscale method used in consoles once Switch 2 releases.
Finally, PS5 Pro is around 50% more powerful than PS5 according to Sony, so this should allow them to just about double their frame rates at 4K, but also re-confirms PS6 is far off in the distance, and with the crossgen period PS4 enjoyed, PS5 will be a focus for developers into the year ~2032. Meaning Switch 2 will have 7 years on the market before PS5 is abandoned, and if Switch 2 can do all of these things, it's going to be a very legitimate platform for any gamer, and any 3rd party looking at a multiplatform release, that RAM difference, the GPU performance, and even the A78C CPU Switch 2 is using, is actually very good in comparison. (ARM's A78C is faster per clock than the Ryzen 2 found in Xbox and PS5, and with 8 cores available, developers shouldn't have an issue with this CPU, as it should offer around 2/3rds the CPU performance as the other consoles because of it's lower clock, though this is offset by Nvidia's offloading of things like physics from the CPU to the GPU, which has allowed Nintendo to push the Switch far further than it's 1GHz 4 core A57 processor should have allowed for).

I agree, with how long it takes to make games with top graphics and performance it just isn’t worth it to me. And it also causes what Xbox is suffering from where they release “not finished” games and it hurts them more than helps them. I’m interested to see what the next switch will do.

Been gaming since the early 80s and I love the fact that nintendo make a machine that runs there AAA games.. maybe there smarter as costs must be cheaper. I just want Diddy kong racing lol, which unfortunately rare is owner by M$

All the mock ups I’m seeing show the switch 2 in a super beautiful and modern way. But i hope Nintendo does something bright and fun. Gameboy color, GBA, n64 and GameCube had striking colors and some, like atomic purple have become iconic and synonymous with Nintendo. Plus, it will make it stick out in a pretty saturated pc handheld market. Keeping my fingers crossed for a jungle green switch 2!

My Series X is basically just my 4K player at this point. My Switch occupies all my time. There are so many absolutely incredible first party games for the Switch. It’ll take me long after the “Switch 2” comes out to complete everything I want to play for the Switch. Meanwhile, the Series X has been out for four years and 99.9% of my library are previous Gen games I’ve played dozens of times. I had a feeling when teraflops started to become the main conversation for consoles that the focus would shift from fun games to pretty games and that ironically lowered the quality of gaming. If you’re old enough to remember when the Xbox 360 came out there was no mention of teraflops in the marketing and no one gave a shit. We just wanted fun games and that’s what we got. There was never a constant expectation to push the 360 to its limits, we just wanted to have fun and THAT’S why that generation was so successful.

I think switch 2 might be closer in power to Xbox one x, as when the Switch was still not revealed it was said to be slightly more powerful then the Xbox one, but we can only wait and see

I actually reckon that swirch 2 games will look better than series s games. Admittedly by cheating with things like more advanced upscaling and tricks ect.
