I've had my hands on the PlayStation Portal for a few weeks now, and as much as I do enjoy using it there's still one big problem it encounters: With so many ways to remote play, including even just using your Android of iPhone, why buy a dedicated remote play device in the first place? Here's some thoughts on how the experiences differ, and when the Portal might just be worth it.

Shout out to my fellow Portal dads that have gotten more use out of our PS5 the last month as we have the last year.
Shout out to all the people who wasted 300 bucks next time just give it to me instead of Sony
The biggest drawback for me is it won’t be able to connect to wifi in public places like hotels due to there not being a browser. That’s a huge problem.
There’s a work around for that and plus, you can connect to your hotspot
@@corrd3ll647 really? Whats the workaround? I haven’t seen that talked about. Also the hotspot is not a realistic option. It’s not going to be smooth at all.
@@corrd3ll647 using your hotspot is the worst idea due to the fact that most places do not offer Unlimited data for hotspots.
I'm paying $160 in my Hotspot is capped at 60gbs ( which would be easily met, not to mention would cost more if you go over).
@Sh1ft3r1 huh. Who said restaurants lol. I never game at restaurants. However I go on business trips often and stay in hotels. The switch is clutch for that. The portal is unusable at hotels. Who the F said restaurants 😂
@Sh1ft3r1 who said restaurants? 😂 I never do that. But I do go on business trips and family vacations. The switch is clutch for those in hotels. The portal can’t be used in hotels on the wifi because it requires browser access. That’s a big miss. It’s limiting it to being a household accessory only.
The issue is that, in my extensive testing, the Portal often performed worse than the Steam Deck OLED running Chiaki. This isn’t necessarily a problem with the Portal itself, but rather with the state of its software. Sony appears to significantly limit the bitrate and doesn’t effectively utilize hardware-accelerated decoding. With the OLED Deck, you not only get the true qualities of an OLED display, but also HDR support soon, as the Chiaki developers are currently working on this. Granted, one is an accessory and the other a fully-fledged handheld, but it’s important to remember that there are many alternatives out there, often objectively superior to Sony’s overpriced single-purpose device.
Really, i experienced the opposit. My problems with chiaki on the steamdeck oled: sleep function on the ps5 remote don‘t work every time; sometimes sound problems; sometimes the controller doesn‘t work anymore; the picture is very bad (doesn‘t make sense because it‘s a 1000 nits oled screen, but maybe the hdr don‘t work as it should); so much lags that it doesn‘t make fun to play
With the ps portal i have no problems and everything looks and plays perfect. I don‘t notice any lags and the picture is so beautiful. Also you get the most comfortable handheld with the best controllers (full Dualsense support) and a very long battery life. Also it‘s quiet because there is no fan.
@@alexh7513yeah, I have heard the same to be honest - Portal being being better than Chiaki overall and unreliable, but I’ve also heard the opposite. Looks like people are having different experiences.
Personally, my Portal has been great. Much better than backbone and iPhone. Much better than iPad and controller. For me it does one thing and does it better than all the other options.
Also, that guy has a “deck” in his name so bias may be in question.
Some People really want the Portal to fail….
OLED isn't worth it if you're forced to play at 720p instead of 1080p. Chiaki has very imprecise input mappings for analog sticks, and completely lacks the haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support that you would expect to have in PS5 games.
Yep I've noticed this too. My steam deck with Chiaki4Deck is killer. The lag is a basically non existent so long as my PS5 is hardwired.
Sure but it’s only $200 vs $550 steam deck oled
I’m enjoying my Portal a lot. It’s super comfortable, fast to pick up and play, has a very nice display that comes perfectly calibrated out of the box, Dualsense is great, streaming works flawlessly at home.
I’m now playing through a lot of games I never finished from my backlog just because it’s so chill to play them on the Portal.
Going to Mexico in a few weeks if I was to buy this would I be able to use and play the portal without bring my ps5 or what would it not work
This exactly. Diablo 4 is perfect on this.
@@izaiahgarcia66 Yes, you can use the portal on Wifi outside your home, however the PS5 must be on or configured to wake up over the network. I haven’t tried this yet myself, I always play at home and I read it may need some port forwarding configuration in your router.
@izaiahgarcia66….I highly doubt it, because Sony did not include a web browser on the Portal, which you need at most places travelling to access their Wi-Fi (sign-on).
My main issue really boils down to it being "portable but not really" as it can only perform its main function with an internet connection and has no means of doing so other than with wifi. The portability of a device like this is practically limited to your home because of this, hardly fitting for traveling, and forget wanting to play in a place like a park or something where you have literally no internet access unless you hotspot your phone and run that dry instead. Tbh, I'd rather not spend an extra $200 on the already demanding price of the PS5 just to be able to play a game if someone else wants to watch TV.
The main issue is people can't read. Gosh
It's ps5 PORTAL, not portable
@@fantasytky28Steam deck is better
Just buy a PS5 and carry it with you for travel/s
Sony just looked at the Wii U and said:"Let's make a Wii U but have it always online and much worse."
But the thing is the Wii U had a good library despite most of being on Switch.
Portal is literally nothing like the Wii U
@@tre2636it's more like the switch. Without a dock. I like that.
@@InnerRise it's nothing like the switch either. It's a remote player device. How is that anything like the switch.
@@tre2636no, the wii u remote was much better, as it was actually connected to the console directly. This meant that lag was none existent. See digital foundrys portal review
Got one on day one never touch my ps5 ever since then. Whatever i go take with me and it work like a charm. It good to paly your ps5 everywhere u go…
So you can play it outside your home in a different state? If my ps5 is in Florida and I'm in Texas would it still work?
People can’t complain about Bluetooth when the switch didn’t even give us Bluetooth capabilities until a year or so after mind the joy cons are connected by Bluetooth.. this device isn’t meant to be a competitor to other handheld devices it’s an accessory to the ps5
As long as you get any of those things single player or multiplayer you get to enjoy games at home or on the road.
The thing that bugs me the most is I can't see the percentage on the portal and the touch screen should be bigger and should be customizable if you want it anywhere in the screen.
Backbone is the clear winner here. The screen resolution is higher at the compromise of a smaller screen and if you have a newer phone. While the controller can become uncomfortable after an hour, you most likely shouldn’t be playing more than 2 hours. Your phones battery life doesn’t drain as much as you would think. And any Bluetooth headphones work. If gaming on the backbone is preventing you from viewing notifications and other such then you probably shouldn’t be playing at that time anyways lol
i bought the galileo off amazon the other day when i saw it in your video.its pretty cool. not exactly perfect by any means but still good
I had to return mine as the internet at my home wasn't really suited for the portal. I have really good DL speed but the upload speed isn't the best... if my wife is watching Netflix while I want to play my internet will drop and will start stuttering which became more of a problem... it's a surprisingly cool device while holding it but the experience while playing wasn't there for me. this will obviously vary from house to house but they should've had a direct connectivity feature like the Wii U where I could play Bayonetta 2 while my wife watched tv.
The Portal works locally and not over the internet.
@@deckverse odd because it required me to setup my internet connection, chose my own network and then setup the remote play process like any other device... the device stuttered quite a bit while playing at my same network it didn't feel seamless or lagless. it's the same effect while I was playing now on my ally. it feels off, at least for me.
@@deckversethe portal and the ps5 connect to the same network, not each other. This is why you might as well use your phone, as it performs exactly the same. If the portal connects directly to the ps5, the same as the wii u gamepad did, there would be no lag. See digital foundrys review for source.
You can have ur system going while people are on a different channel on the tv, and use the portal.
Its great for parents who are letting their kids use the tv and you want to play the game
It’s made for parents. I enjoy the hell out of it.
What the portal does for me is that I’m actually able to play games because of it. Usually when I get home by the time shower, eat and get comfortable it’s already 2hrs later. By that time I’m already thinking that it’s too late to start playing so what ends up happening is that months later I still didn’t ever sit down to play not even for 1 minute.
With the portal what happens is by the time I’m comfortable at home, what I do is I just go to bed and start playing. This been netting me 2hrs a night of game playing. I started playing bg3 finally thanks to the portal I’m already 45hrs in where as before the portal I was not able to find not even one free second to play it.
Sony knocked it out of the park with this device I mean, that’s the reason why you can’t find one of these even if you like them or not.
So if you’re away from home with the Portal and your PS5 loses power for whatever reason, is there a way to turn it back on remotely? Or are you just screwed until you get back home?
You end up having a PS Paperweight until you get back home unfortunately
The portal probably doesn’t have cellular data on it either because I can remote play on my phone while I am riding down the road when one of my parents are driving some people in my family say they can’t do that because it makes them carsick but it’s never made me carsick beforeI grew up in the 80s so whenever the Game Boy came out I would always have them in the car and play them. Maybe that’s what got me used to playing games in the car.
I see you got Marisa’s Outfit 3, nice.
I love my PlayStation Portal and once I changed my lan cables to Cat 8, I don’t experience lag at all.
Ngl I did the same thing an I haven't experienced any lag either. I also unplug the hdmi cord
Portal actually works for me because my PS5 is our home's central entertainment system, so while my wife may be watching something on Netflix or Disney+ on the PS5, I'm still able to game. On a pretty big screen still.
Hope to get one somefay
Im pretty sure Galileo or BSPD8 fits lenovo y700. So much better option if you already have the tablet.
Also laptop gets remote play and ps plus streaming. With work around for steam deck windows hand helds and so on. Though MacBook or Windows laptop with wireless headset and dual sense is far superior
I found out w the portal it’s best to turn the thumbstick sensitivity down to make up for the smaller sticks
How? Is that settings on ps5 settings or there is a sensitivity settings on portal itself?
Talk about how u can't access wifi at 90% of public places because it doesn't have a browser to approve the sign in. Make sure to include that part.
How come nobody talks about $200 for a dedicated streaming device for a PS5 (not even ps4) vs Switch Lite which is the same price and compare the values they bring? Just makes it seem like y'all just trying to be very soft in your assessments with this product for whatever reason. At least to me it seems that way.
If another company brought this out they would be saying I can already do this on my phone. There are a lot of people trying to over justify this things existence
Curious to know if latency/response time is good enough for online games like Call of Duty. I get a 20-30ms latency in COD and stacking more latency on top of that could mean more deaths than kills.
Best to install a LAN cable to the PS5 and not use its wifi. It worked best on PS Remote and my iPhone 15 PM (wifi6)/Backbone controller. The Portal will benefit the same since it uses older wifi5.
Most likely you can get an adapter for the portal that outputs a Bluetooth signal to pair a Bluetooth device to it. I had something similar for my Nintendo switch before they added Bluetooth support to that console
Yeah, aux to Bluetooth is pretty simple, usually cheap
The headphone thing is a huge put off for me, I have great headphones that I use with almost all my gaming devices so forcing the buyer to buy extra is just a money grab :(
Pretty cool
I just wish it would've had SOME kind of direct connection... I've never had a great experience trying remote play. Wifi manipulation to optimize is something new to learn that will put (most) people off. I'd even prefer just a long type c cable to use reliably
I think the one thing I like about the PS Portal more than the Backbone is that the PS Portal is an actual dedicated device. Backbone I always have to remove my phone from the case and its annoying. Plus I like to use my phone to listen to youtube or twitch while I game.
annoying it's so easy to snap and go do you play mobile games that much there's always Xbox x ps5 pc etc
I just use an Xbox controller and the kickstand on my case
damn, 3 portal vids in 2 weeks...I wonder why!
Dang, you got that new Marisa drip!
Some people just like to waste money honestly and that’s their prerogative
Or some people see a use for this thing
This was designed for people who don't know that the remote play app exists
This is designed for people who want to play remote play in a handheld form factor with dual sense controls…you know, exactly what it looks like
Portal: $200 + Pulse Explore: $200 = $400
At that point, I’d rather just get a Steam Deck and actually get the most important perk of a handheld: to be able to play when I’m not at home.
This made me appreciate my modded Vita more
I got a case and screen protector right away on Amazon and it's perfect for what I use it for. Playing FF7 remake and spiderman on hard mode right now. Runs great!
I've tried a lot of devices for PS5 remote play, included the steamdeck oled with chiaki. But for me no device really works great. It was always too laggy with too much problems. With the ps portal it's the first time i really enjoy and love the remote play. The lag is much less than on other devices and for me it's so small it didn't bother me anymore. The picture looks much better than on the 1000 nits oled screen on the steamdeck. (Makes no sense, but maybe the HDR works better on the PS Portal). Everything works perfect out of the box. I love this 200$ device allready more than my 500$ Steamdeck Oled or my 700 $ Rog ally.
If I have Wi-Fi in my car can I play the portal on the go or I have to be at my house on the same Wi-Fi as my ps5
I see someone purchase Star Ocean Second Story.... I subscribe. This game is perfect on the Portal btw!
Screen size and dualsense shape are enough to buy it.
You can easily do that with a tablet or if you have a foldable phone like me you'll easily have about the same size of screen but better quality and be able to do higher fps.
@@Shendowxnah the dedicated nature of the portal makes it superior.
@@dnice4145 dedication to what?
Being e-waste? A good paper weight?
@@Shendowxcope harder xbot
Not a strong arguement when u can use a tablet and dual sense controller already
I love mine. Its upped the value of my PS5 and PS+.
Upped the value?
To break it down for everyone. This is basically only a test model. For the next generation of handhelds come next year will be more advanced. You will buy it because they will have every idea we presented once it drops. It’s called business.
Cope
I don't harbor any concerns about the existence of the PlayStation portal, in fact, I consider it a great product with specific use cases. However, there's evident disappointment among some that the PlayStation Portalable is no longer active. Personally, I'm not overly eager for its return, especially with alternatives like the Switch and Deck available. It seems like a reasonable decision for Sony to explore different directions. Personally, I don't see my phone as a gaming device, it's primarily a phone, and I use it for calls or quick searches when needed.
I have never ever and will never ever burn out my phone using it to play games. That’s why I can have a cell phone for more than 5 or more years. I bought a portal because it’s made for what it’s made for.
Plus if people wasn’t so untrustworthy, then you would probably be able to download games “you own” not your buddies. I believe that’s the reason we can’t get a self supporting handheld device from Sony is that it will only be able to play games they can prove you purchased.
How bad is the speaker?
Why people say ps portal and remote play is using the same remote protocol?
Well, it definitely looks like Sony was hanging around the table from Nintendo learning to software lock any Bluetooth device from being used except for theirs, of course. My only guess is for some strange reason all of a sudden Sony is going to unlock and allow us to pair our Bluetooth devices to the portal when they finally realize they’re not selling their headphones. Sincerely, Tim Cook.
Love the beanies.
If you can afford it its a nice tving to have. If you cant then dont complain its for certain buyers stuff getting more expensive nowadays.
I have had my portal since launch day. Used it 10mins. Resort back to my console max tv 😂😂😂🤦♂️
Having second thoughts now. If another PSN account ban issue happens, the portal might just be another paper weight.
I went with Viture glasses instead!
Sony should make remote play paid subscription to make this product better 😂😂😂
I think the biggest takeaway I got from this video is the fact that Kevin bought Marisa's Wedding outfit
Can I play on the portal and at the same time someone uses the play station to watch Netflix for example?
No
@@BaloNF then the device has no additional value
I’m attracted to the Portal for the display size, and how an image almost takes up the whole display. The PS5 style controller grips are nice too -but that’s where it ends. It really seems like a rushed product by Sony for a cash grab. Owners of a iPhone 15 PM and 2.0 Backbone (ironically endorsed by Sony) probably won’t feel a need to buy this product.
I have a magsafe clip and a metal ring on my Ipad
Backbone wins...plays everything...everywhere
phone screen too small to play AAA games. Not the best screen to play PS5 games. Totally different experience
I think its just fine to play a lot of AAA games actually, 100% spiderman 2 on a backbone and working on my play through on cyberpunk i think its big enough
@@VRRJAY Good for you. In my case, it’s hard to play text-heavy games like RPGs. PS Portal has a potential to be a RPG-backlog killer on the PS5 (especially for BG3)
@@allenanthonylarano8652False steam deck will play BG3 with mods .
Unpopular opinion (i guess): I prefer my controller separate from the screen. I can hook my phone up to a tv if i want too
1. Save money for a little longer.
2. Buy an additional phone and buy a backbone.
3. Play ps remote play, Xbox remote play, steam link, iOS/android games
4. 1 device for all
The whole reason for this thing is that the experience of using a backbone isn’t great
My portal works better streaming than my phone steamdeck rog ally I just wish it had cloud streaming but I'm sure they're blocking it until it's able to be a similar experience as streaming the Ps5..but I've played assassin's Creed mirage about 25 hours on it cyber punk probably around 5 hours and testing out cod I've been able to amass 20-25 kills just like playing on the system but I'm a casual so take that with a grain of salt but I've started to download my backlog PS4 catalog to enjoy because I can't be any happier with my portal
Lol Definitely not better then the Ally please STOP LYING...😂😢😂
Lol stop steamdeck is leagues better
Galazy Zfold + Gamesir Bluetooth controller...Oled
You’d be better off getting a phone clip. You’re getting the same experience from any other device with a benefit of using ANY other headphones.
I just feel like you can use your money for other things than just a dedicated streaming device that will more than likely not be usable with the next PlayStation. Atleast with the Backbone, you can use it for emulators and other remote play services.
I think it will also support the next gen system. I don't think Sony will change too much with the next gen controller. The PS VR1 for the PS4 also works for the PS5, so why shouldn't this be the case with the ps portal.
@@alexh7513you do need a cable to make the vr1 compatible though. Wouldnt need to be compatible if the vr2 was backwards compatible
I suppose I'll stick with the "10-meter HDMI 2.1 cable from PS5 to my bed, allowing me to play it on my iPad via the capture card" method.
If it was like 100 dollars it's a cool buy but at the price it's not an impulse buy.
Why do people keep saying "you can use your phone" as if people actually use their phone for remote play? 99% of people don't want to drain their phone battery for on-the-go remote play.
Why does the PlayStation 5 portal look like a TAMU smartphone
My portal works amazing with my nighthawk router. BTW yes, you can use any dongle style headphones/ headset for the portal. I use the B&O portal headphones with my PS Portal by changing on the console audio out to that headset dongle, it only works at home though obviously where the console is.
When i bought the Portal i know exactly when, where and what type of games ill be playing. Test/borrow it first. It may not be for you.
Just connect your dualsense to your device and use remote play💀
no haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for dualsense in other devices but PS5
I'm not buying a device that can only stream ps5 just because of the rumble.
@@wimpycorpse Your money, your choice mate but PS Portal exists so there is a choice for a dedicated remote player device for PS5. Sony is fine whether it flops or sells because their main console is the PS5, and the PS portal provides a premium experience for playing PS games. just an alternative way to play PS remote play, a small part of PS5 functionalities like the PSVR2
@@allenanthonylarano8652 it doesn't offer a premium service as it doesn't connect directly to the ps5. It runs the same as your phone or tablet would. Its great of you get a use out of it, but I believe if it was a 3rd party accessory it wouldn't be getting this much praise
@@wimpycorpse Sony said that the PS remote play and PS Plus cloud streaming are essentially just running on two separate servers. They can add a separate function for the Portal as a cloud streaming device but they are focusing on the remote play function first. It’s a first world problem but the PS Portal scratches a special itch that no other device can, at least on my experience.
You're better off just using your phone with a backbone controller. At least that way you will get more functionality.

You guys complain about $200…imagine the price of the device you described 😂
Bluetooth adapter 😎
The reason I believe they make you use link for audio is Sony is trying to be Apple in the sense they want you into their ecosystem. Buy a PS5 and then we will sell you a Portal or VR and audio accessories. PSVR would be way more successful if it allowed PC, but Sony is trying to get players locked into PS and no way out as to where MS is saying play our games on any screen you want. Not saying which is better but only saying it’s clear of the direction both are going. Walled gardens are normally not appreciated as much, unless you love Apple products, so i am surprised to see Sony not getting much pushback for doing things such as the Link and others.
Yo you didn't mention head mounting phone on your neck. I got one of those silly things on temu for $7. Puts your phone right in front of your face.
It's not a portable device. It's more of a lounging system. It's more for corporate gamers, ei. Buy 2 have 1 at home 1 in the office.
I only use my phone, cus I have a ps4 and not a ps5
did I know About the Nintendo Switch Family and that Steam Deck for every men and women in the future
The Portal is only good if you want to play ps5 games in your bed, if you want to play ps5 games on the go, use your phone.
Since you can't use Bluetooth (even tough it has Bluetooth because its able to connect to their own headphones) and you can't connect to WiFi which uses some type of html interaction, aka public WiFi, its sooo bad and I cant imagine why anyone would buy this rn. Its like a WiiU tablet with a bigger range in your house....
Teh Portal selling point, afaict, is same tactility as the DualSense and a fairly large screen for a mobile player at a lower price than the SteamDeck.
But there are other caveats, you need to:
1) not already have another handheld 2) only want to play PS5 games 3) have a really good connection wherever you are
4) hope that all your ps5 games are digital otherwise its going to be a pain to take it out the house with you
Having a phenomenal time with mine. I've been playing all my back burner games on it. Armored Core, octopath, dragon quest 11. This device is sooooo dope.
If all you want is streaming your ps5.. then yes it is.
BUT, if you would like to stream ps5, ps4, xbox gamepass and pc games.. then it's not.
Question: why?
Answer: you’re now old and got wife and kids 😂. (That’s the true target market for PS portal and it’s understated !)
Why do we need a first party case? It would be the same make by the same 3rd party only you pay $20 more for a Playstation logo. Why do people want this so badly??
The playstation portal was designed for you to play your favorite games while you take a shit in your own home, on a nice big handheld screen. Not for travel.
Its too expensive for what it has to offer
This thing was worth every penny. I’m actually shocked how much I like it.
Sony is just not being consumer-friendly this go-round.

Pretty sad tbh.
No reason to buy one if you already have a Phone. Just buy a phone mount for your Dualsense and its literally better in every way. Bluetooth, Connect to public Wifi, more portable, just more function and literally better in every conceivable way imaginable.
