  • Waveshaping refers to a function that maps input voltages to output voltages in a way that creates a saturation effect. Over the years a variety of saturation functions for software amp modeling have been proposed. In this video we compare some of the popular methods and talk about their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Absolutely the basic information that I was searching for. The are tonns of amp modeling gear comparison out there with thousands of likes and views, but no one seems to be interest in how the magic happens. You have done a great job explaining this. Thank you!

For your "asymptotic limit" you could generalize to `x / Abs[x] + n`, where `n` is a distortion factor. You could then scale the result by an approximate function `1/sqrt(2) + n` to roughly preserve the RMS of the output for different values of `n`.

Very enlightening, so if I understand correctly the quiet area closer to 1:1 is where an amp would clean up?

tanh is also an asymptotic function, no? :)
