No, a pocket knife. W.C handy "discovered" the blues when he was waiting at a train station and fell asleep and awakened to an old black guy playing his guitar with a pocket knife. He never heard anything like it. It was the first time he heard a blues progression and he memorized it and made the first blues recording St. Louis blues with a big band in the early 1900s
Whoa how on earth he able to play all of those notes using just a flask?? I love this guys clearly self taught style! Music is for everyone who wants it and this guy shows that. Love his soul!
yes!! he is amazing isnt he! we played in a band together and he said in the band van how he was going solo and I said good luck and now see him on stage all over the world!! go Jack! Power!!
A year ago this video had about 4,000 likes. Jack is now World Famous! Just saw his World Class show at the Mint in LA. i am so glad your are finally getting the gigs and attention you deserve.
Just when you think this couldn’t get any better. Half way through this man starts singing and man. His voice is made for his style of playing! Well done!
Oh my God! I've never seen and heard something better on guitar! Jack, you're genious! Truly talented! That guitar tone... Oh My God... THIS is the blues! Now I'm your fan!
Max Headroom...... their to busy on snapchat or some other shit I imagine! thinking id set up camp if I heard him tho,, McDonald's and buckfast would be the menu haha
Max Headroom IT was An example. People nowadays got stuff to do. And you dont have to insult people to het your point across."square fucker" dafug kind of insult is that even
Pisses me off so much how this obviously extremely gifted chap isn't hugely successful (yet), but absolute absolute talent vaccuums like Cheryl Cole and One Direction are fucking rolling in it. Jack Broadbent is awesome.
According to himself (in a more recent interview) he enjoyed playing on the road, because it let him connect with his audience and experiment with his music. You could say he's been earning his street cred on the road, like a true blues man :-D Meanwhile, 4 years on, he's now touring and getting some of the hard-earned success he's had coming! He's coming to my home town in august - I can't wait! Here's his tour schedule if you're trying to catch him: www.jackbroadbent.co.uk/tour.html
Bubbletrouser I know this was written 5 years ago but anyway I assisted on a session in a recording studio with Cheryl Cole and I can confirm she is actually very talented. When she got in the vocal booth she sang her heart out & nailed it every time. Will I Am was recording her, they must have got about 5 tracks down & there was one note out of the entire session that was ever so slightly out by a few cent (barely noticeable) and he nudged it into place with auto tune. One note! That’s pretty impressive
Absolute killer original style. It's like there's a whole band behind him, that's how full it sounds. I could watch/listen to him all day. Amazing technique.
I remember moments like that when my amp, my guitar and me were all in SYNC! It is the most amazing experience one can have in life and for the LUCKY few who got to witness it right it front of them when it does happen- just like right here for Broadbent!! Moments like this are rare when everything comes into sync!! This is what all musicians aim for -gotta check him out CUZ you most likely be paying a lot more to be seeing him do his thang Live!!!!
I love the way he makes the song come alive, it's like for 10:02 a song is not just a song and I think he intends for it to be that way. Just do your thing and don't care who loves and hates it, I like that style of doing things. I watch this vid every day before I practice.
I love those kids asking their parents for more money to give to him, it is good to know that the new generation can enjoy good music too! Jack is the real deal! Very rare in these days
Jack, I come to this video often. It gives me goosebumps. This style, and your particular voice on the guitar in this video, is a rare jewel. Keep bringing your dreams to us, please!!! Im so glad I found you ! ! ! !
Dammm! I LIKEd ThAt! Would love to see/hear him do this on stage with around 20 amps and a sort of 'quiet' 'bassy' drumming & subtle bass guitar complimenting along in the background... maybe fading in & out.
Jack Broadbent ... hey, my new found friend, my day is made! Thankfully, I just discovered you through a random post to my Facebook page. I'm now a dedicated fan, and will jump right over to your website and buy ALL of your music! Being an old retired guy I now spend my days cruising on my Harley, and listening to fine tunes. I guarantee that your's have just gone to the top of my list, and I look forward to putting in many, many miles with your music in my ears. Thank you! Keep writing and recording and I will certainly keep buying and listening! Best of luck, and if you are ever coming to the U.S. , I would love to see you live. Cheers mate!!!
Wicked song, Jack. First I listened to it till the end then I took my guitar (standart E) and I played along. Its so freakin jammable! :) You are a real music talent. Im happy I stumbled on your video. Wish you all the best in music and other...Peace!
and here we are ten years later this man is world famous and has been given the title of " the new master of slide gutair" aptly by the montux jazz festival , congrats jack ! you deserve it, little fact, he spent majority of his younger years playing drums for his dads band and at about 18 really started to get into guitar and started busking and traveling soon after, explains his expert control of tempo and percussion whilst playing
I love your stuff, man. You've got a deep groove and a killer sense of the microtones. Blues, not rock sloppiness. Certainly as good as Kelly Joe Phelps. I've just published a novel, Busker's Holiday, that you might like......easy to find on Amazon, etc....cheers from Mississippi
Yea, the first time I heard "On The Road Again" and "far Off Galaxy" my jaw hit the floor!!! I've been saying for a while now, he is seriously underrated.
I had the opportunity of meeting Bob Hite's mother when this song was on the charts in the 60's. Even though the lirics said "she left him when he was quite young", she didn't. Regardless, the song never gets old and this was a very well rounded musical adaption of his music. A hermonica would go great here too. Play on, well done!
hey jack could you consider uploading a youtube tutorial for how you play with the flask (steel guitar style) i would love to know how to play that way :) thanks
Hey. Yeah I've got a few recordings of it. Thanks so much for filming this and putting it up. I seriously owe you one. I've gotten so many great opportunities out of it. If you'd like, send me an email to info@jackbroadbent.co.uk and I'll send you a new CD as a thankyou. All the best. Jack :)
Looks like a Roland Microcube . Sounds like a Microcube with bass turned up, and reverb about 1/3 . I'd like to know what pickups he's using . Piezoelectric ? Internal mic ? A blend ?
Wow. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world Jack. Keep doing so and good things will come to those who are fortunate to see you perform, and to you as well. :)
yea, well when i went to the US and i looked in my wallet..... I saw alotta dollar bills. Thought i had a load of money. Then i counted it. $10 and a bit XD See, in europe the smallest bill is 5€ I only saw 2x $1 coins in the US ever.
Its the UK, where a £2 coin is worth US$3.50. Believe me, he made waaaaay more in the ten minutes of this video that a lot of people get per hour from an employer. Most people working in shops and fast food places on a UK high street would love to get paid that amount of "bullshit" per hour
***** Yeah, I thought those people were being greedy jerks, too. On my little phone, those coins look like quarters. Lol. It's good to know he's making a decent amount of money. He sure has talent.
When you use a steel flask whiskey bottle as a guitar slide, you know you've mastered the blues.
try using an old spanish guitar with huge gauge strings and a cleaned out Tabasco bottle
Damn right!
Fucking genious you are
No, a pocket knife.
And as that flask gets lighter throughout the day the Riffs get wilder
Whoa how on earth he able to play all of those notes using just a flask?? I love this guys clearly self taught style! Music is for everyone who wants it and this guy shows that. Love his soul!
He plays the notes with his right hand and fingers. The flask just changes the pitch
Robert Johnson style music!
yes!! he is amazing isnt he! we played in a band together and he said in the band van how he was going solo and I said good luck and now see him on stage all over the world!! go Jack! Power!!

Just when you think this couldn’t get any better. Half way through this man starts singing and man. His voice is made for his style of playing! Well done!
My whiskey flask just makes me worse at playing music
phoenixsplash135 Hahaha but the Radio gets louder !
+phoenixsplash135 And what ever you say gets wiser and wiser (what we call WT = wise talk) ;-D
Mine follows a parabolic curve - I get better at drumming with the first couple shots, then I get worse.

Max Headroom IT was An example. People nowadays got stuff to do. And you dont have to insult people to het your point across."square fucker" dafug kind of insult is that even
I could listen to this guy all day.
Pisses me off so much how this obviously extremely gifted chap isn't hugely successful (yet), but absolute absolute talent vaccuums like Cheryl Cole and One Direction are fucking rolling in it. Jack Broadbent is awesome.
Talent has no relationship to commercial stardom .

Giving dollar bills instead of change would encourage more street performers to perform thus enriching all our lives everybody wins
why is this guy on a street performing when one fucking direction have made it famous?
Seriously, who are the 23 A-holes that gave this a thumbs DOWN?

Jack Broadbent what brought you to Keswick ?
Dale Mcalpine I lived in Loweswater for a year, so Keswick was my local town.
Jack Broadbent cool, just wondering how we missed each other when I have preached in Keswick.
Jack Broadbent You rock man!
You are absolutely incredible dude!!! It must be an awesome feeling to be this good at something
I saw him live. He was fantastic and he signed my shoe
I'd love to know what tuning this is.
Yes I say it also fat daddy tuning easy to remember :).
Nice playing with hip flask. It is harder on that.
awesome.. what's the tuning on the guitar? open G?
D
love it Man you're sliding like a Devil, love your groove !
Thanks for the post. First time I seen Jack Broadbent and he's good. I enjoyed!
was that a dime. hey big spender
Does anyone knows what kind of amp is he using? sounds amazing! great blues-slide guitar player
+Francov2007 I believe it's a Roland micro cube
+Matt That sound is just coming straight out of the guitar? No effects? Does the amp have effects?
It's a modeling amp that has built-in effects. I think he's using a light overdrive and maybe a bit of reverb
Wow ...just wow. Kinda reminds me of Jack White. I could listen to this all day.
He's good. Really good. But what kind of assholes still throw pocket change?
He is in the UK. Smallest bill we have is £5, that is about $7. The £1 coin is about $1.25. Lots of those being thrown in 😂
Neil Bancroft I stand corrected.
No problem my friend, wasn't having a go at you, was just explaining. Have a good day further.
yea, well when i went to the US and i looked in my wallet..... I saw alotta dollar bills. Thought i had a load of money. Then i counted it. $10 and a bit XD See, in europe the smallest bill is 5€ I only saw 2x $1 coins in the US ever.
It adds up.
This better be some country where people still use coins cause thats bullshit.
I heard him say "quid". He's in the UK. Bills start at £5 so chances are most of those coins are £1.
Its the UK, where a £2 coin is worth US$3.50. Believe me, he made waaaaay more in the ten minutes of this video that a lot of people get per hour from an employer. Most people working in shops and fast food places on a UK high street would love to get paid that amount of "bullshit" per hour
colinm213 In this video alone, 10 minutes, he made at least £12-£15 - on a good day he could be making over £50 an hour, rofl
Thats good to know. I'm from US and don't have much knowledge of currency other then mine. Glad to see he's doing good.
***** Yeah, I thought those people were being greedy jerks, too. On my little phone, those coins look like quarters. Lol. It's good to know he's making a decent amount of money. He sure has talent.
WOW Dude! 🎉You belong in a Recording Studio making RECORDS… ❤ FABULOUS‼️😎
Fantastic!!!!! Makes me happy!!!
no its not it was recorded on a mobile phone
