    Well a big THANK YOU for being the first and ONLY reviewer on RUclips that ACTUALLY showed the liner perspective!!! I absolutely hate the fish eye curved edges look that all action cameras have and wish they would abolish it on all of them.
    It still looks pretty good in linear, does it crop in much?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Год назад +1

      Yeah it crops in a bit, to be honest, if linear is your go to look in an action cam I would probably look at their standard action cam, one s or something it's called! But think of this as a good bonus to have on a 360 cam!

    • @sibertiger17
      @sibertiger17 Год назад

      @@malcolmmoore I have the DJI Osmo 1 and love it, way better than GoPro. So I have that perspective, I want the 360 X3 for all the other capabilities it has like turning the camera around to get different perspectives on the same shot without needing 5 cameras!
      So on that point, can you move the angle around still in linear mode?

  • @TheShift1313
    @TheShift1313 Год назад +2

    Probably the best review video out there. Thanks for making that! Im still not sold on it sadly. The me mode and 360 stuff is cool but the lens fragility, the picture and audio quality vs the gopro just arent there for the cost. I think they are really close and maybe the x4 will be the game changer. Just need a more durable unit for mountain and dirtbiking. Id love to try one and see but i think ill wait a bit more.

      Yeah I still use gopros too. Each camera serves different functions. I'm pretty confident I won't drop this when I'm riding, but for dirt biking I imagine you'll get alot of muck hitting the lens!

      Nah I use my own mic setup, a rode lav mic. I think they do a mic setup that attaches on the side. Hey Malcom,
    I was out last weekend to get my chops back, but the place I was at just had T-bar lifts. I fell over a few times making a fool of myself! Got any tips?

    • @elho001
      @elho001 2 года назад

      Practice that one footed riding in some really flat spot and also just keep using those T-bar and disc drag lifts, it really is that simple.
      I learned snowboarding in a resort (and at a time) with 95%+ drag lifts - the first days and week were tough, but like week 3 or 4 the non-gnarly lifts were not the slightest issue anymore. And I guess 8 to 10 weeks in I started messing around in the flat sections of the lifts, like putting back sun milk on (it were the days of no helmets and Oakley M-Frames :D), eating a sandwhich or doing one footed board presses. The years to come pushing that into the steeper parts. There's no big secret, just practice and baby steps. :)
      One tip though, if the lift track is at a sideways incline, let gravity pull you slightly over to the lower side, do not fight it trying to stay in the center of the track - you are more likely to struggle and fall in that fight trying to use your edge too much one footed than just staying calm and flatbased on the path of least resistance within(!) the cat track of the lift.

I have the selfie stick but usually like to have hands free while on the board. When using my Garmin I would mount it on my helmet and just go. What recommendations do you have? Ok that's question one, question 2 is when I board on narrow runs I want to keep control. We're talking about 3 meter wide runs, 9 feet, with mountain on one side and drop into forrest on the other. I tend to have back board drift alot rather than going straight so I wind up doing quick carve motions. How does one stop the wigglies?

  • @przemeksoroka9932
    @przemeksoroka9932 2 года назад

    @Malcolm - maybe a stupid question, but I'll ask it: you keep both the invisible stick and the camera in your pockets, but where do you think it would be the SAFEST to keep them during riding when not in use? I will give you the context: this season I'm planning to work on my technique (based on your tutorials of course) and I think that (1) it's more likely that I will fall every now and then while working on modifying the way I ride and (2) I will not have my Insta360/stick in my hands or mounted at my helmet all the time, as keeping the stick in my hand would be a distraction. And yet I will be turning the Insta360 on every now and then to e.g. check whether I'm leaving a thin carving line on the snow. The stick is quite sturdy, the camera is also a little brick so I'm simply wondering whether keeping them in my pockets and catching the front edge and falling would not mean that they would e.g. break my ribs ;-)

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  2 года назад +1

      Keep the lens guard, pouch thing, on the camera whilst it's in our pocket and then it's fine. It's built to take a beating and essentially it's just like having a phone in your pocket. As for the stick, it folds down pretty short, but maybe avoid putting it somewhere that it could stab you in the gut! If you have cargo pockets on your ski pants for instance 👌👍

But all these clips were just filmed in the auto settings. I haven't really used it much in cloudy conditions yet to be honest, but again I think auto would handle it pretty well. You uploaded video in 1080p to RUclips. RUclips compression on 1080p is very hard resulting in a very bad quality as you can see in your video. It looks like it was shot on GoPro Hero 3 or worse. First thing to do is to upload all videos in 4K. And second thing is to export all videos from the Insta360 App in maximum bitrate ( at least 150 - 200mps ) . So when uploaded to RUclips they are at their best quality and then RUclips can do its thing...

    • @malcolmmoore

      You seem to know your stuff which is why this comment makes less sense. You even have an x3 video that is not in 4k!

    • @ThinLineMedia
      @ThinLineMedia 2 года назад +1

      @@malcolmmoore If there is more movement, darker sky or all together combined you can really see the compression artifacts. ( like here ruclips.net/video/2fVopj6HC0Y/видео.html ) It could be both video quality from the camera and RUclips compression. You can also see that in speeded up parts like chairlift timelapse. The image is also very soft looking. It doesn't compare even close to the latest GoPro's . RUclips allows only 8mbps for 1080p, but for 4k up to 45mbps. Which is a significant difference in bitrate. You could apply some noise reduction and sharpening to improve the 4k clip as well. But anyways the quality improvement is so small from Insta360 One X to X3 . We probably need to wait 10 more years to get decent quality in 360 cameras 😀

    Not related to this video, general question about board choice. Intermediate snowboarder riding mainly on piste, contemplating getting a directional board with a set back. Does this make sense? I’ve read that this is good for turns and also stability as your weight is further back. But they are often regarded as pow boards. So are they good for piste riding as well?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  2 года назад

      Yeah, it absolutely makes sense, if you're not interested in riding switch directional boards make more sense. I'm also using the nidecker escape this season that is a little bit directional but can still do switch well. But having a directional flex, more than shape, definitely helps drive more power through turns 👍

    • @elho001
      @elho001 2 года назад

      I second the if, ie. but extend/refine that from if not riding switch to if not doing tricks like buttering. If not talking about things like a swallow tail, riding switch as Malcom pointed out is still not much of an issue, but (especially learning) some tricks sure would be harder on too directional a board.
      In general, what makes most sense to you, ie. what you are going to like most, is something only you can ultimately answer. Try different boards whenever you get the chance.
      It also depends a lot on the board, there is twin-ish slightly directional and e.g. fish type very directional. Plus, like Malcom hinted at, there is both directional shape, which in turn can be shape nose vs. tail (like with the fish ones) as well as taper, and directional flex. In combination you could have a board that is almost pressable like a twin, or one where the longer nose "surprisingly" presses easier than the short tail, because it is much softer.
      Just for the powder float, you can also set back the bindings on a twin, but to be honest, in 8 years with a (long enough mid-wide) twin I was never tempted to bother, even in hip deep powder days. That said, I eventually added a stiffer directional volume shifted plus a softer (asymetric) twin to my quiver, and while my intention was to grab the latter mostly when I want to do tricks (on piste, not a park rat), I found the (torsional) flex of that board along with the asymetric shape to make it an absolute joy to carve deep (got the wide version) with, as well. Its the steep icy mogul fields where the softness makes it a lesser choice than the other two.
      There's many variables in a board construction and one could sure come up with two groups of pairs of one directional and twin board each, where in the one group you would prefer the directional ones and in the other the twins. :)
      Oh, one note, do not mistake freeride & allmountain freeride categories as purely powder ones, there is quite some difference in riding and board best suited for tons fluffy powder in mellow terrain and facing crusty and icy snow in high alpine steeps.

    When you said the ski patrol is going to move you along soon, is that based on what they seem to do in france, or did they pick up this (terribly for photography) habit in switzerland as well?
    20-30 years ago in Saas-Fee, the final ski patrol would just go at their own pace, zipping past anyone still out there (and not on the ground), leaving it to your own responsibility to either be back down before them or at your own risk.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  2 года назад

      Because this is filmed early season I'm up on the glacier, meaning I need to get the lifts back down as you can't ski all the way down yet. So yes they move you along to make sure you don't miss the final lift. Perhaps when the season starts properly and you can ski all the way down they don't mind so much!

    • @elho001
      @elho001 2 года назад

      Good point, did not think about the resorts still being in "summer ski mode" at that time.
      Back then in Saas Fee though, having been there each season for many years observing how they operated (and actually learning snowboarding there, too :)), going down Alpin Express from Maste 4 was still possible without any issue an hour after its official closing, because after the official "last ride down" it was used to bring beverages and food for the restaurants back up to the mountain for the next day (which someone had to unload and bring to the restaurant's storage) and then by the restauraurant staff (which also had to clean the restaurants first) to get to the valley, so it was a safe bet to take your time and be late.
      Spielboden was safe about half an hour late.
