Nick Hentschel Fukazawa, unfortunately he passed away quite a while ago. He was a lovely guy. 8th dan at Wado. Very experienced and was very tough but kind and always willing to help.
Guys, comparing the first two with the third one is unfair, the wado ryu guy is Hiroji Furazawa, an 8th dan legend and one of the greatest Wado Ryu master of all time. The Shotokan girl is Misako Aragaki, a world champion in JKA for the kata category, she may be one of the greatest person on earth that can do those sequences. The third one is just a random black belt owner.
Right. Two different people within the SAME style and kata can look different in terms of technique, power and speed depending on knowledge and ability.
To be honest the girl doing Shito Ryu lacks in power, she isn’t bad however I don’t see the spirit in the kata. I suggest to check out kata Videos from Antonina Diaz and you can see how powerful Shito-Ryu can also be! :) this is a good video tho
Wado Ryu looks more controlled and focused on keeping a sense of defense. Shotokan looks more focused on strength, moving power from her legs to her arms. (Hint the stomps she does), and Shito Ryu is more calculated, keep an eye on how her feet move compared to the others. She is a little more light on her feet
it wasn't the stomp of her feet that made the sound but the power of the punch and kick, so his kimono made a sound. By the way I am also a Shotokan karate-do player.
There are many more differences, but let's try to give you arguments and examples. WADO-RYU The one you can see in this video is Hiroji Fukazawa. This video footage seems to be from late 1990's or early 2000's. So he was filmed after having practised for almost 35-40 years. He was a member of the original Wadokai until master Tatsuo Suzuki created the Wado Kokusai Karate-Do Renmei (Wado International Karate-Do Federation) and so he then joined him. He studied directly under Hironori Otsuka (Wado-ryu founder), under Tatsuo Suzuki, and with Hiroo Mochizuki in France. But as he has a bit derived from what was taught in Wado-ryu Renmei (created by Hironori Otsuka's son, Jiro Otsuka, aka Hironori Otsuka 2nd), he can't be considered as its best successor, due to many Mochizuki's Shotokan additions to his practice. Wado-ryu Renmei has been created to follow Otsuka family's path : Wado-ryu is not Karate, they call it "Jujutsu Kempo" (Hironori Otsuka was already the legitimate heir of Shindo Yoshin-ryu Jujutsu before beginning his Karate Practice). SHOTOKAN This is a mid-grade competitor from JKA Shotokan (Misako Aragaki, 3rd Dan) who officially retired from competition in 2007, and who stopped being a JKA HQ instructor at the same date. She was a Kata competition expert. JKA actually teaches only modern Shotokan. This means it has almost nothing in common with Shotokan-ryu from Gichin Funakoshi. It has lost the meanings of every move, of every technique. JKA Shotokan is now a sport, not a martial art anymore. If you wish to know what is traditional Shotokan, you'll have to learn/watch Tsutomu Oshima or its followers. SHITO-RYU This is a unknown low-grade of Shito-ryu. Shito-ryu's founder, Kenwa Mabuni, studied under the greatest Okinawan Karate practitioners from the 2 main Okinawan styles : Kanryo Higaonna (Naha-te) and Anko Itosu (Shuri-te/Shorin-ryu founder). Anko Itosu was one of the masters of Gichin Funakoshi (Shotokan founder). But Jion is a very old Kata from Tomari-te. Both Gichin Funakoshi and Kenwa Mabuni learnt it from Chotoku Kyan, who also studied under Anko Itosu, but more important : under Kosaku Matsumora, the heir of Tomari-te. Other Katas also come from Tomari-te : Jiin, Jitte, Niseishi, Sochin, Unshu, and a specific versions of Wanshu, Rohai, Chinto and Passai. There are already several versions from more recent schools ("styles" ?), but there is only 1 school left who teaches the original version of Jion. Kyudokan Kobayashi Shorin-ryu is the last school to teach Chatan Yara no Jion (Chatan Yara is considered as the very first master of "Okinawa-te"). There, we have a wrong demonstration, with many issues, and called modern competition "Shito-ryu". It has nothing in common with what was taught to Kenwa Mabuni, the Shito-ryu founder, and you will find many differences with what's in Mabuni's book "Karate Kempo : The art of self defense". The differences go deeper than what you've quoted. Wado-ryu uses lots of "Nagashi", the softer parts of the arms, and focuses on piercings, like if you had a spear or a sword. Deflection is Wado-ryu's main goal. Traditional Shotokan-ryu is basically Shorin-ryu, and traditional Shito-ryu Katas are also Shorin-ryu Katas. As Wado-ryu founder trained under Funakoshi, it should be very similar. But as you want to compare this video editings, let's say they look very different due to their practitioner level, and due to the deviant practices. What you can see in this video are : Wado-ryu from WIKF, modern competition Shotokan from JKA, modern competition Shito-ryu. Nothing in common.
Just learned this kata in Shito-Ryu. Was explained to me that this kata incorporated slower, flowing movements (1:50 for example) replacing some of the hard, fast blocks so that they're intended more as joint locks instead of deflects or breaks. It's interesting to see the difference in intent within the move differences.
Honestly we could say that Japanese karate styles are pretty much as different as Judo and Jiu jitsu. Both share around 90% of all techniques, what really differs is the focus of some aspects, such as power, softess, footwork, speed etc…
I've only practiced shotokan but from what I remember, it is basically more explosive and you are supposed to stand lower on your position than the two others. It is also more spectacular that's why this style usually wins more in competitive karate. Would love to have a feedback from people who know the other styles though
I've been practicing Wado Ryu for years and of course, our positions are known to be higher than Shotokan's ones. Shito Ryu's are also high, but the biggest difference between Shito Ryu and Wado Ryu is that Wado Ryu brings some jiu jitsu techniques that don't exist in others styles.
@@faynoz8566 yeah, bang on. wado cuts out some of the more elaborate parts of techniques to make them more effective, and then adds some jiu-jitsu stuff. Definitely the most direct out of the three
I am a 3rd Dan black belt in Wadō Ryu and the key difference between Wadō and Shōtōkan, which is not well depicted here, is that Wadō is based on body management which refers to body manipulation so as to move the defender as well as the attacker out of harm’s way. This can be achieved by moving along rather than moving against or harmony rather than physical strength. This is the essence of Wadō ryu in comparison to the more static, low stances and long attacks of Shōtōkan.
@@ioannisparaskevopoulos1120 i remember every boxer using their legs for quite spectacular multi-level movements. they dont even need need them for kicking
424dsfdsfdsfs I am not saying boxers can’t fight or not having great physique as a result of training, the same stands for Karatekas as well. But still, don’t compare a boxer to an experienced martial arts practitioner who uses his legs in various angles and heights with brutal force, as they are the stronger muscles of the human body. And don’t forget, a martial artist uses techniques, combinations were arms and legs engage, especially if he’s got well trained legs, he is unbeatable. You should know that the best kickboxers, all come from karate training background.
Actually, Jion that is done Shito-Ryu girl is not the same with Shito-Ryu Jion done by the founder. The Shito-Ryu Girl is from Shokukai, a style-branch from Shito-Ryu, the actual Shito-Ryu Jion is much more difference in Kihon
Wado is pretty much a mix of jujutsu & stylings of karate. Shito uses leg muscles quads & Hams & other big muscles of hips & legs to produce power. The strikes are to block & stun the opposed person by them being done at close range for leverage & to develop chi throughout.
The differences between these karate styles are not really highlighted in this video. A difference worth noting is that Wado Ryu has Jujitsu elements that other Karate styles such as Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu and Kyokushin doesn’t. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadō-ryū
Um… once you get beyond 3rd kyu in pretty much any Okinawan style, you start learning the joint locks and throws in kata, and it becomes less and less about kicking and punching stuff.
@@NotEbugaming They do now but very minimal. Traditionally no they don’t. We kick, punch, throw and sweep until the end, our training never really becomes less of any techniques we’re taught. What’s your style my friend, and how long have you been training for?
@@pallavthaker2020 Jion is the name of the kata that the three are performing. The uploader forgot to add shorin ryu, so here's one more version of the same kata: ruclips.net/video/E9L9v7pYfEE/видео.html
So far as I can see, and it's more likely a difference between practitioners than styles, the Wado Ryu fellow seems to be putting a greater emphasis on power, the Shotokan girl on speed, and the Shito Ryu girl on form. Given that it's the same kata, I'm not sure how much difference even someone well versed in the differences between the 3 would be able see without the labels.
No. But most people know the difference between Okinawa karate and Japanese karate it's all about timing and kime with Okinawa karate and speed with no timing between each Technique.
I'm a Wado Ryu Shodan and the perspective that this system is coming from is that of Tai sabaki and classical Jiu-Jitsu. This is why the stances are a bit taller and movement is from the balls of the feet
@@Gieszkanne yes, my best friend and my belated mentor were shorinryu black belts. In that system, proper movement is emphasized before strength and it's kata are very extensive with only shito-ryu having more.
Also remember that Shotokan was developed for the Japanese school systems and was taught en masse. Many of the stances and footwork were exaggerated so they were easier to see from the back of the class.
@@NotEbugaming you are correct. Shotokan karate was to be taught en masse. Other systems such as Wado-Ryu, Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu were taught in smaller groups and often in an outdoor setting. Many Okinawan dojo are outdoors, the Kyu has to endure the elements also. This contrasts with the indoor honbu of japanese dojos. One of my mentors was a Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu Sandan and his system emphasized proper motion. This harkens a back to mainland China and Shaolin principles.
The difference between Wado Ryu, Shotokan, and Shito Ryu...is that Shotokan practitioners have access to better camera crews. But seriously though, Wado Ryu was developed as a hybrid of both karate and Jujutsu, and so many of the blocks and parries performed in the kata are done with the understanding that they could potentially transition into joint locks. 2:17 to 2:19 looks particularly grabby, at least to me. Shotokan emphasizes speed, stability and power, having been brought over to Japan during a very volatile period of time (the lead up to WWII), when people felt they needed something empowering. While presenting this "powerful" look, Shotokan emphasized the teaching of things like compassion, respect, how to be humble, etc., to try and counteract all that negative energy. Shito Ryu is pretty much a blend of these various aspects, being a blend of different styles of karate.
@@rtyler1869 True but somehow I do hate Kyokushin kata. It's like they tried Shotokanize Goju Katas. Gekisai looks awful compared to the original Goju-Ryu version. Kyokushin is awesome nevertheless:)
The difference I see is “Wado Ryu” style has power constantly. You can hear him breathing deeply. He’s getting tired. “Shito Ryu” seems faster, and different stances from Deep to mid stances. The “Shoto Kan” does Fast n slow. More dynamic. You can hear her power when she stomps down to give her more power. But doesn’t easily tired. Her style has the least kiai’s.
This is more down to how the individuals are performing the kata. Wado tends to value attack and defense equally, maintaining a balance and also making moves less fancy by cutting out all unnecessary parts to allow easier application in real scenarios. Shotokan attempts to be a lot more offensive and focuses on evasion when fighting as opposed to attacking same time in wado (attacking at the same time as defending) , their katas tend to look a lot fancier and are the nicest to watch: they win competitions. In general wado is more effective for real application and shotokan is more sporty. Never looked at shito ryu in detail so I can't comment on that.
@@foxrestive8285 ye exactly, shoto is more of a show off style, hence why most of their katas look impressive and fast, but in technical matters wado is better cuz it has more emphasis on the natural way of movement. u dont need to be really low on stance to produce power and speed.
Who ever says "Shotokan is the best" or "Wado ryu is the best" or "Shito ryu is the best, cause is faster than that style" or "more powerful than that style" doesn't understand karate... or martial arts at all. And/or has been watching too many kung fu movies.
Just a Florida man from 75th RR nupp.. they are not useless at all man.. combat art is different and martial arts is different.. the purpose of both of them are different.. one serves to teach for long combat fighting inside the ring and other serves to teach quick fight moves for real street fight.. and moreover martial arts is for one’s discipline, moral values, life style and combat sports is just to fight recklessly.. better watch the difference out.. and never say a martial art is useless.. humble request from my side.. 🙏🏻
@@justafloridamanfromthe75thRR brace yourselves, here comes the keyboard warrior! He has watched so many ufc fights, his typing is incredible powerful! watch out! he could talk shit about something he doesn't understand!
In the hopes of not encouraging any more keyboard warriors, I would like to clarify something: what I meant is that saying that one martial art is "quicker" than another (for example) is stupid. Your martial art is only going to be as quick as you trained for. And even so, there's only so many major differences between sistems, it really just is about preferences and history... and don't get me wrong, I'm a martial arts nerd and especially a karate nerd, I love studying different styles around many disciplines. That's why I consider that thinking that you can be more "powerful" because your style has lower stances or what ever is childish. No style is going to grant you magical powers, you are only going to be strong if you work hard for it. That's something the old karate masters knew. (Yes, it applies for "MmA iS tHe BeSt" too)
They're all great, but if you are looking for self-defense, then you should go with Wado-Ryu because the blending of Karate and traditional Jujitsu (which offers great grappling skills to accompany your karate skills) think good offense, but better defense!
While I’m not sure about most Tang soo do schools in the west, but it isn’t simply a copy of shotokan as many people claim. Tang soo do has heavy influences from the martial arts styles of the northeast asian continent/Manchuria.
@@yopglomusic8872 shit in the 5 rings samurai book it says to never use kata in battle they are only to be used as excersizes. What you want is to flow freely. Smoothly and continously moving is to eliminate gaps in your defense. To stop for even a moment means you are dead. So essentially to have flow in combat you must know the individual pieces, when to use them, and how they are performed then link several together without hesitation or gaps between your kata.
@@BlackDeath1973 Yeah, that makes more sense, but it still doesn't apply to every kata. When in combat am I gonna sweep my hands all over or do some weird breathing rhythm with my hands. Never. 🤣🤣🤣
difference i saw is that the old man, could break bones, his moves were meant to kill, as for the girl, yeah she is champion in kata, but you forget 1 thing, its a lot different when something looks ''awesome'' than something that looks clunky and not so ''fabulous'' trust me the girl in shotokan can look amazing, but half of their moves wouldn't do much cuz all she is focusing on is speed. modern karate today is more about speed than what it used to be. old karate was more natural, it meant to kill and not just do something as fast as it could.

I knew the recognised karate styles are (alphabetically) Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu, Shotokan, Wado Ryu. I don't know how many different organisations and associations and splinter groups each style has...
Yes, Kyokushin is one of the 'big four', the others being Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu and Shotokan. Shito-Ryu, Shorei-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, are closer to Goju-Ryu as far as I know, and are all in the Okinawa pool. Shotokan is Mainland Japan, and I'm not too sure about where the others are most frequent
Im from Shito_Ryu and most of the moves in Jion from the shito ryu girl were accurate but there were some errors to the movements. Shitoryu is not an exaggerated style, its a goal is to be practical.
Interesting reading...of all the comments,so far. I had the privilege and honour of training in Japan at The Takushoku Diagaku on two occasions, in the early and mid 70's. The training was brutal to say the least, being a Gaijin. All I can say, it taught me Fighting Spirit. Bunkai ,works in a environment that is not real in a NASTY FIGHT. I never met a Drunken Punter who wanted to punch or kick my head in, using Karate Techniques....it was always with numerous punches and kicks, or a broken glass that they tried to ram in your face !!
I've studied shorinji ryu karate for 40 years and the jion kata i do is close to this, a few different moves but close. All styles are good its understanding the moves and the application of the kata,s.
Shotokan still looks more attractive to me out the three arts. It looks like there's more power involved, and has a flow l like. The form out of three looks better to me. The striking and blocking at the same time, I wonder how thin arms would hold up without breaking against a thicker bone person? I should have paid better attention to this style when I was a kid.
It's intereting, becouse in reality shotokan is the ''stronger'', and wado has a softer style. This kata doesnt shows us the real wado style, becouse this one wasnt made by the first wado master, ocuka sensei. It was adopted from the okinavan styles. The ohyo kumite and the kuhon kumite may show you the real form of wado.
Everyone of the three styles shown on this clip 'are incorporated into Kyokushin Karate. Also many others ideas and traditional styles whichever form of training practices MassOyama found effective. For me each style I see here brings back many memory's,
Jujitsu is another art I am attracted to. I was watching a Jujitsu player practice with an Akido player and it was interesting how they where countering and throwing each other, even double throughs.
Is Shito Ryu any good? What are the key differences between Shito Ryu and Shotokan? In my area there’s an abundance of Shotokan schools and 2 Goju Ryu school.. but I stumbled across 1 Shito Ryu club and am interested in what makes it unique from other styles of Karate
That’s really great.. don’t listen this mma shits.. they don’t even understand the difference between a combat sport and a martial art.. they are always discriminative 🤣🤣 but you did great my man.. cheers to you ❤️
And moreover this mma fools don’t know that lyoto machida is a badass karateka and kicked the asses of many mma fighters who used to learn core mma.. but why to explain these fools .. 🤣
I dont see any differences to real self defense. It should be mentioned that some might say that Karate is ineffective, but, watch UFC Ex-Lt Heavyweight and Middlewight champion Lyoto Machida. His father is a high level black belt in Shotokan, which he taught his son. His father is Japanese, but Lyoto grew up in Brazil, the land of Brazillian JiuJistu. He is half Japanese and half Brazillian...and learned BJJ growing up. You can see his stance when he fights, and although he is truly a mixed martial artists, his root are steeped in Shotokan and BJJ.
The bankai would really expose the difference. We see three major differences in stance and how that translates into the bankai would show why "x" is used instead of "y". Stance aside, sight deviation of how their hands and legs move indicate a response to different combat influences. Bankai would help answer these questions, the video was just bait I suppose.
I like wado-ryu in this if these are true to the style it seems every movement with wado-ryu is explosive even the steps blocks and no pauses the other styles seem like they draw it out and take time to slowly adjust their body than move I feel like wado-ryu is definitely more explosive in cardiovascular where the other ones are more of an art form I would prefer the explosive personally pretty straightforward also stances pretty neutral where shotokan is pretty long. I'm a green belt in Kenshin can shorin Ryu and I like my style but I like wado Ryu kyokushin and I've been watching some uechi karate
Filip Cieluch Not necessarily the best approach. It detracts from the real spirit and tradition of Karate. The real challenge is to apply kata movements in kumite. That is the essence. Personally I do not like kyokushin. Greetings.
The main Difference here is obviously the level of the person perfoming. If you would have Rika Usami performing Shito Ryu i guess most would have a different opinion on that style.
I don't know whether it's intended or not but the Shotokan (I used to practice only this one, so idk) seems to be the one focusing on adjusting the hands with the feets. I mean when you look at 2:31, you can see the Wado Ryu guy is moving, and then doing his uchi uke, oi zuki and soto uke , whereas the Shotokan lady is doing both simultaneously. What are your thoughts on it ? Edit: typo
Shotokan is the most powerful Karate! If studied and practiced with dedication it is a formidable martial art for self defence but it is all down to the student and how dedicated they are to it, It must become a way of life not jtst something you do twice a week. It must become part of who you are and you will then over time cultivate and develop an indomitable Spirit!
So not much difference then?Jokes aside, honestly i couldn't care less if there are slight differences in katas between styles. More importantly to me is the differences in techniques, tactics, training methods and practical applications for self defence.

This is a kata, it's not really about differences of styles, but of execution. Wado implements some elements of judo/jujutsu if I remember correctly, anyway a lot of throws and pulls and less focused on straight attacks like shoto. I don't know shito

@@Haywood-Jablomie kyokushin is effective.
I myself was a Wado Ryu practicioner and absolutely love this
Me too
Wado Ryu... how nostalgic, the first style I ever learnt.
Same here. Took me forever to find anybody who'd even heard of it after I moved away.
and i'm still practicing it !

Hiroji Fukazawa, an 8th dan legend and one of the greatest Wado Ryu master of all time, HAI 🥋. ......
Interesting explanation on harmony.. would you fight a boxer though?
424dsfdsfdsfs If the boxer can use his legs, sure, why not?
That part at 2:25 I remember as where you fall forward into a block. I learned under Kyoshin Kayo
There are at least five different styles of just shito ryu. They kind of had a family feud after Mabuni Kenwa passed.
Wado is pretty much a mix of jujutsu & stylings of karate. Shito uses leg muscles quads & Hams & other big muscles of hips & legs to produce power. The strikes are to block & stun the opposed person by them being done at close range for leverage & to develop chi throughout.
Shotokan ❤️
The differences between these karate styles are not really highlighted in this video. A difference worth noting is that Wado Ryu has Jujitsu elements that other Karate styles such as Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu and Kyokushin doesn’t.

No. But most people know the difference between Okinawa karate and Japanese karate it's all about timing and kime with Okinawa karate and speed with no timing between each Technique.
@@joelowen5388 "no timing between each technique" ... you are soooo wrong!
I'm a Wado Ryu Shodan and the perspective that this system is coming from is that of Tai sabaki and classical Jiu-Jitsu. This is why the stances are a bit taller and movement is from the balls of the feet
In older styles like Shorin ryu the stances are even taller than in Wado.
I'm a shito ryu student.. But all of them were best at their levels.. Great Kata by the way
all r awesome
During this time Kyokushin breaks rocks and beats trees

And then gets a punch in the face and cries.
These all look great!
I think Wado Ryu is the tightest with the movies and Shotokan is the most flowing.

And even so, there's only so many major differences between sistems, it really just is about preferences and history... and don't get me wrong, I'm a martial arts nerd and especially a karate nerd, I love studying different styles around many disciplines. That's why I consider that thinking that you can be more "powerful" because your style has lower stances or what ever is childish. difference i saw is that the old man, could break bones, his moves were meant to kill, as for the girl, yeah she is champion in kata, but you forget 1 thing, its a lot different when something looks ''awesome'' than something that looks clunky and not so ''fabulous''
