I studied isshin ryu for a few years. we were taught to be very tense during this kata. however i have studied this same kata from a goju ryu school (where the kata originates from) in later years and they do it the same way sensei shimabuku does it here on this video. the main lesson of this kata is breathing and knowing when to use the tension. it trains the body to receive impact and it really works.
I find it humorous that a person calling themselves 'porktimmy' provides negatively critiques a master of a previous generation for his demonstration of a kata that this critic probably doesn't understand in the least. What's more, the critic is probably oblivious to the fact that Mr. Shimabuku was demonstrating this kata not in the way it is performed, but the way it is taught to students who are just learning it.
@mikhailrahl I agree with you. Just today I was arguing with someone about MMA. It is a sport, not a style, which many people tend to forget. They have no charts or katas. I hate asking what style a person takes and them saying MMA because it is not a stlye.
Remember this is when he was old and just going through the motions for pattern purposes but in his best days no way in hell he would just be that relaxed.
Anyone that studies Isshin Ryu karate should notice that when Tatsuo does his brake from the bare hug, his lead arm is not doing a high block. Anyone that preforms this technique with a high block is doing it incorrectly and should not be teaching it.
Although I did not train directly under Shimabuku Sensei, my lineage is very short indeed, and I have been told to keep in mind that at this point in his life, the only empty-hand kata he trained in on a daily basis were Sanchin and Sunsu.

This is a good resorce but you shouldnt be puting it on youtube Master Shimabukuro would not like what you are doing i would remove it for his respect.
+Rudy Valentin dear Sir.i do respect GM Shimabuku.but.why dont the Isshinryu masters on RUclips perform the katas this way .? with no snap or full stances & half extension of the arms.& i dont mean anything bad .just don't understand his under performance.thanks.sir.

Mike Turley he isnt just a grand master. He is the creator. Of the style based of Goju Ryu and Shoren Ryu. Pay some respect
