      Honestly... I am rather happy about everything on my Rift S, EXCEPT FOV. (and terrible audio, which makes separate headphones mandatory). So... talking about value: would take Rift S with 170 FOV for 500$ without any hesitation, BUT... need of lighthouses and controllers makes it really a tough buy...

    What do you think of the Artisan? Is it an option for you?

    • @azaralamouri5140
      @azaralamouri5140 4 года назад

      Hey Sebastian in my opinion there is a problem that isn't addressed although it is important. The market is starving for cheap base stations (and maybe controllers) even gen 1 is OK, even more economic or simplified is OK. They sell you the headset for a reasonable price but then double it if you need base stations and controller. The first time VR users are buying second hand 1st gen Vive without base stations then they don't know what to do with it. The problem of the prices have kept me from getting a Pimax since years ago.

    • @azaralamouri5140
      @azaralamouri5140 4 года назад

      1 small question: In your video the Artisan appears with the wider (newer) headstrap. Not a crucial difference but something welcomed if it comes with it instead of the slightly narrower normal headstrap due to being more comfortable. Do you know if all Artisans come with this wider band?

      99,9 % OF people in the world don't have a VR Headset and they will never spend $1000 to try VR. Artisan using Nolo tracking is a Winner against RIFT S. Sebastian remember my words in next review of Artisan.

      Sorry for the delay. Didn't realize there would this much interest. :) The Artisan's visuals are slightly better than the Index, not huge but noticeable. I also like the dual hardware & software IPD adjustments which allow you to really zero in the sweet spot. The larger FOV is definitely noticeable and nice.
      However the Index is going to win as the daily driver. Integrated audio and the head strap is waaay more comfortable. My next purchase after the Artisan was immediately the HTC Audio Strap so that adds another $100 on top of the purchase.
      The Artisan sold me on the Pimax brand though and I was able to pick up a used 5K Plus for $450 and an 8K Plus also for $450 on eBay. Still testing them against each other but the 5K Plus is my favorite of the three so far.

    Just to clarify, the Pimax Artisan FOV is actually 140° (170° if using diagonal) compared to Index's 135° right? Because Pimax is using a diagonal measurement for all their headsets while everyone else is using a horizontal measurement? Not as giant a leap as their specs would imply. Go figure. Lol.
    I've been thinking about upgrading to the Pimax 8KX once I gather enough money and upgrade my computer. I'm actually still using the Oculus Rift CV1 and never got the chance to try out a higher FOV headset.
    But if the day comes and the StarVR finally comes around again, I'll gladly go for that instead.

I have backed a Kickstarter MRTV Experience, that is valid, I think, until late 2020. My son has a lethal muscle disease/disorder (DMD) and we have to avoid infections at all costs. January 2019, one doctor (responsible for his lungs) told us he would probably not live more than a few month more. That caused us lots of tears, of course. Fortunately that doctor was wrong, and he still lives today. But we have to be very careful. So, considering the wide spread Corona, is it possible to use the MRTV Experience in 2021?

    You said the Index is your recommendation for VR enthusiasts overall, but I'm curious about people like myself, who already have something like an Oculus Rift S or other non-SteamVR ecosystem headset, that are looking at breaking into that side. I've been strongly considering a Pimax 5k+ or the Artisan because I just don't see how the Index's 130 degree FOV, and 120(144)hz refresh rate will drastically differentiate itself from my current Rift S. Since the package for the Artisan comes in under the price of an Index, with the same lighthouses and controllers, it is an attractive option. It seems your issue is with the lack of a deluxe audio/headstrap, and just some build quality concerns? I know the Index has gotten the reputation for being the Cadillac of headsets, but I'm just tired of looking through a tube while playing VR.

    • @escknx
      @escknx 4 года назад +1

      120 fps does make a difference, I have both Index and 5k+ and prefer Index all the way. Its just better experience, better picture, better sound, no additional chineseware like pitool. The only downside to Index is long waiting times, but it worth it. 8KX really make no sense at this moment, because 2080Ti isn't enough to drive decent refresh rates out of 2xnative4K. Maybe that will change with 3080, who knows

      I agree that in that in 2-5 years there will be something better for inside out and I hope the Quest's hand tracking can get better, but I think they will need a Quest 2 for hardware improvement. The only reason to get something over an O+ value is if you have the money to spend. That is for any Gaming PC though and is why being able to upgrade easily is the best feature the PC have over consoles for me. They are getting better at being able to increase your storage without having to buy a whole new console, especially XBOX which has a new head in their team and I like their new heading. use Reshade Graphics enhancer mod for all your games and use the sharpening shader, if properly calibrated it can make sharpness of the image feel like 1440p from 1080 or feel like 4K when its only 1440 but it doesnt drag down the frame rate. there are a bunch of other graphics shaders too you can add to make the image look better than Native 4K. on VR though just stick with Color and Sharpening shaders mostly because the other enhancements will drag down the framerate.

    My strange story with LCD I don't know if it's useful or useless:
    I owned 2 Oled (not LCD panel) VR headsets before: Oculus Rift and Samsung Odyssey.
    Every time I try an LCD VR it feels sad and bad for the first 30 minutes or so, more clearly it feels like there is a black or gray mesh between the pixels.
    And yes, I know the story about LCD having more sub pixels and thus having less SDE in theory. But believe me, what I said applies on high end VR headsets like HP Reverb, Pimax 8k+ and HTC Vive Cosmos. Maybe the Cosmos had the best clarity and colors (to be more accurate I should correct: maybe the Cosmos was the most pleasant image for me among the LCD's).
    I drove 600km to try the Pimaxes and started with 8k+ (didn't like it). 5K XR (liked it), 5K + (liked it) Artisan (didn't like it although tbf it can be my option due to the price), then back to 8k+ and this time I liked it.
    Long story short I always have a weird feeling with LCD VR. Which is that the screen is dark and the colors are sad. The sub pixels (although many which means higher perceived resolution) but still visible like small points forming the overall image.
    Maybe the best solution for both worlds is like what the Xtal guys or the Playstation VR guys did, which is full RGB stripe in an OLED screen.
    I don't know if anyone who tried both OLED and LCD agrees, or if what I said makes sense to any one else but me.

      I came from Rift CV1 and upgraded to the Index and did not really mind the color change. The main thing I was after in VR was picture clarity, being able to read text on my VR desktop. And my screenshots on the index vs Rift is so much better. The Rift on Skyrim my screenshots had really bad jagged edges that would not go away. Now with the Index the screenshot comes out pretty good, not as good as desktop gaming of coarse but good enough to share on the internet. The FOV and but I do hope LED gets better and lower costs to add RGB strip. The high price of Pimax is what drove me away, and Valve's headset announcement hit me right when I was deciding on a new headset, but I hope they do improve on everything.

    I gave up with Pimax after backing them and getting a 5k+. The housing cracked just from playing elite, the LCD screens have terrible light bleed and grey misty blacks[like all lcd screens] I have settled for an Odyssey plus, which imho is superior to the Pimax for several reasons. The AMOLED screen is sweet, the colours and blacks are brilliant. I found constantly tweaking Pitool/refresh rates and fov size was a pain in the arse trying to find the sweet spot for every game. The Odyssey plus doesn't have this issue, I just plug it in and play the damned thing. I especially notice how much better the AMOLED is when playing dark games like alien isolation and elite, that's when you realise that LCD screens are a bit shitty for VR even though they give more clarity. I guess in an ideal world I would use Pimax for racing and flight sims and Odyssey plus for horror or atmospheric games or night racing/flying.
    Pimax seem to be messing about, they keep making new iterations on their HMD's whilst they should really be focusing on their stretch goals, it's been 2 years and people are still waiting for a headstrap for christs sake, never mind those who pre paid for knuckles or their lh 2.0.

      Yeah, seems you have an old 5K+, Serial No 202 or SN203. I have gotten an SN204 and have the new proper housing, the new panels with better utilization, and virtually no distortion (except on the huge FOV settings for the last 5°). It can also run 120MHz on normal FOV (still 170°). The point is, if you buy a 5K+ now you're getting a better unit (a SN204) than the old 202 or 203 versions.

Vive, Oculus and Index have online stores that is where they make their largest profits and offset any loss in hardware manufacturing. Pimax doesn't have that ability so the other way to go is to make a better product than the competitors which is hard to do as a tiny company but well they have. I Have the 8K+ and it's an upgrade form my Index but is it worth double? For me the removal of SDE and Wider FOV it was but for some it wouldn't be.
