- Demko AD-20.5 K110 / D2 edge retention testing. How did this one do and is it worth the cost? I tested this one on the factory edge, first sharpened edge then the third and fourth edge as I normally do. I'll cover all the results, show how the factory edge looked and cover how it sharpened.

As always I appreciate your time and thanks for watching.
🙏 thank you for all the work and knowledge you add to this community
You're welcome
I have AD20.5s in both AUS10A and D2 and they both are equally great and came razor sharp with no burrs. Payed $90 each direct from Demko. Would buy again! 👍🏻
Don’t have one, but still appreciate this video! Thanks for sharing!
Man, it was a tough pill to swallow when getting this one. I ordered the shark foot variant from knife center. I’ve gotta say, I love the little guy. Sure wish they’d reconsider doing premium materials in the future but I really think it’s a great knife. Kinda want another one so I can have the clip point too but not for $150
Great review ! I’ve got one of The KC D2 exclusives also but in the FDE moss green ;)
It’s only made it into my edc rotation a few times with only a little light duty . As far as the knife design goes absolutely love it and blade steel I personally haven’t had enough time with it yet nor sharpened it . I did take the burr off with some diamond rods and lightly strop and cuts well .
I was wondering about this.Thank you for the great videos.
Truely dont know why they're using d2 as a selling point, especially for the price, great test thanks for all the work yiu put into these videos.
I watched the Knife Center video when they showed this version and they were actually using the K110 as the selling point! David said Bohler does the D2 better so they give it the K110 name to put their name to it! 😳
@@RSRS-ws3px I saw that as well, I know they have to sell the knives, make them sound great, but at this point its ridiculous what they're trying to pull here, this is a 60 dollar knife max with crappy steel to boot.
I waited until I found this knife ( Aus10) version on sale for around $100 and picked it up. I think it is overpriced. That being said it is one of my favorite's to carry. I like Aus 10 and prefer it over D2. I have many Cold steel in Aus10 because I think there great values and you can pick them up on sale around $50 to $75. I find Aus10 holds a good edge and strops up easily. I think that D2 at $100 is too expensive. They need to be around $60. I think the CIVIVI Vision in Nitro V is a good alternative but is still high at $80. Thanks for all the good info! It helps to navigate all the steel options out there!
Good see this comparison. I think more people should watch this video and the video on AUS-10A.
Interesting results compared to the AUS10. Great vid as always and thanks for the effort G😁👍
G good video! Thanks for all the testing and information and thanks for sharing brother!!👊👊
Well wish I saw this before I bought.. the concensus among the knife community was that D2 was the better option.. Thanks for the video.
Great video Gerald, awesome work as always. Mine came at 33 thousandths. I’m getting mine reground
Thanks for. The Information Everyone Wants. One. .e Too ✌
I’ve got the KC AD 20.5 with the red scales and K110 blade. I’ve carried it a few times but haven’t done much with it except to sharpen a few pencils. I bought the AUS 10A version as well. But I really like red. I’ve used a lot of knives with AUS 10A (Cold Steel fan). Just as I’ve used a lot of knives in D2. I don’t mind D2 that much. I bought the AD 20.5’s more to support Demko Knives than anything. Im hoping that they will do a larger version with the AUS 10A or maybe S35VN. The only way they will do it is if they know they will sell.
I just got this on knife center, a bunch of them on sale for $124. I was wondering why they’re on sale if they’re so popular but maybe no one is too excited about the D2. I’m don’t know a ton about knife steel, but hoping it holds up well enough. Still think it’s a cool little knife
3:18 Made me Awww
Very nice
How is this an exclusive when Demko already makes orange grivory in D2?
Let me know when you're ready for me to send the 20s. See if the extra 100 plus adds anything to the capability of D2. Maybe the 20s will knock my old WE off the pedestal lol.
Thanks Gerald. Have you tested other K110 blades? Do they perform like the typical D2 you've come across? Is it any "better" than D2 in edge retention? Thanks.
I haven't tested any other K110. I'm just over D2 in general and I'd rather pick up things that is more interesting to test. I do have a couple that I can get on loan and I will test them when I get a chance to. I'll have a better idea then but this example has a good result compared to most D2. Just keep in mind it's one single example.
@@Outpost_76 Thanks! Hopefully you will test CD53 (japanese steel equivalent to...Sleipner?).
@@gaberoo9099 that video will be out anytime now. I have one currently.
@@Outpost_76 Awesome. Miguron Velona?
Great videos 😉👍🏻🇺🇸
Thank you
@@Outpost_76 your put the work in 😉👍🏻
My takeaway is that I need to give AUS10 more respect. Plus it WILL strop. D2 laughs at my strop.
Testing aside now that I used this K110 working I'm going to do a follow up to this.
Do you know if this transfers to real life use, where you'll be cutting many different materials? No matter what knife I bring to work it's always in need of sharpening after a few cuts through carpet and boxes and bags. 1095 or s35vn seems to have no difference at all. Then out of curiosity I tested my 1095 esee izula against my s35 on various materials in the exact same manner and both had near identical wear. Can you give any input? Thanks man.
ESEE runs the 1095 soft so that's no surprise. I don't know what they run the S35VN at but I'd guess for thier intended use its also soft. Keep in mind carpet is going to be hard on any steel but some will hold up much better. Dirty material is very hard on an apex. What other brands and steels have you tried?
I suppose that's why we use disposable blades still. I recently brought the spyderco shaman in M4 to work and I was impressed. I could tell a clear difference there. I've been using a benchmade mini adamas and a spyderco para 2 in cruwear also. I'm curious what you think about the new 3v demko 20.5. Weird choice in steel?
Fine
What’s your finger edge and working edge
Fine edge
Fine edge is when it won't shave arm hair anymore and working edge us when it quits cutting 20 pound weight printer paper clean against the grain. On the Google sheets of test results the working edge column represents the total amount each knife cut for each test. I've had a lot of new subscribers lately so I'm going to do a video talking about all of the Information.
@@Outpost_76 oh I thought you were meaning like 2000 grit being fine edge and 1200 being within edge. Ok thanks for the info love your info and channel
K110 in my experience is much tougher than Chinese D2. At least on the two maxace K110 knives I tested. It carved easily twice as much wood before bouncing than Chinese D2, indicating increased apex toughness( yield strength). I also believe Benchmade D2 may have been K110 as well, seeing as how it performed well (in your test also) and Benchmade at the time bought N680 from Bohler for all it's H2O knives.
I think Ad20.5 didn't do K110 justice, perhaps they skipped cryo or did not temper properly.
I hv some Cobratech d2 and Son!, lemme tell ya its the sharpest knive i own. No toughness testing yet. I do some abusive things n git back to yall
Benchmade D2 is CPM-D2, MUCH better than ingot D2.
German (Böhler sometimes) K110 is just standard D2. Not sure why you brought up Chinese D2 at all.. it's not relevant. This is a Taiwanese Manufactured knife. Before you try to "upsell" K110.. it's literally just bare bones ingot D2. It's not CPM-D2 which has a slight edge. In Demko's case, it boils down to proper heat treatment.
Not bad looking knife should be a good work knife good video as alway .
The majority of the Knife community is far behind on knowledge about steel and heat treatment and its effect on edge retention in cutting cardboard. A lot of those people don't care and refuse to see.
Until a better resources are provided, no ones going to be up to speed. And manufacturer's are just gonna keep doing it wrong. And people will keep saying d2 is better, when its not
I bought the first issue with Aus-10. Wonder how this D2 version compares?
Strike my question, you answered it.
PUPPY!
That poor dog was sooo upset about that burr! Poor thing.
There is a reason why it is called k 110 and not D2
Hey Gerald, good vid as usual. D2 never disappoints us with its incredible mediocrity.
Can't wait for the D2 fad to go away, it just has too much carbon (for an ingot steel) to heat treat well in batches.
I have the same knife in shark foot. Not worth the $150. You're paying for the Demko name and shark lock.
I agree about the K110 version of this knife. If Spyderco an then out M4, XHP and other steels from thier Taiwan facility there is no reason these shouldn't be able to end up in that range as well. While the Aus-10 version performs much better in general use its pricey to a point as well. At the same time you hit it exactly, the extra time in manufacturing not the materials is a big part of the price of the knife.
For the life of me I can't understand why D2! Even S35vn would make much more sense.
I'm guessing you're going to re-blade this with Magnacut ;)
I don't know if Demko didn't offer this design to cold steel or if cold steel didn't want it, but I think that we the knife consumers were shorted by the AD20. I'm sure Demko makes more per unit than he does off of the Ad10 and Ad15 that cold steel makes but this knife just seems inferior to me.
I just think on top of it being not something you'd imagine Cold Steel selling, it's also marketed towards a different crowd. I'd guess it's more likely that Demko wanted to go his own way for economic reasons.
I think it is insane that the Demko knives come with a $100 Shark lock and throw D2 and small pin with cheap plastic grips to market. I mean I absolutely love the design but for $150 I would just stick with Spyderco. The next step up runs around $400 which is overpriced out the ass. I think they are playing this wrong the way they are bringing it to market. What a waste of a great opportunity imho.
Yeah. This was the most disappointed I've been with a knife purchase in a long time. At least I got aus10a with mine. Seeing these in d2 for $150 made me lose interest in Demko knives
K110 has more carbon and chromium.
Love the blade shape, lock, ergos and styling BUT........im not gonna say it. You all already know.
I’m finding out now the bearings they put in them are micro scopic small and the cage is so thin!!!!!
Can't wait for your disassembly video
I totally understand paying 150 for d2 in this scenario. Demko is slowly working it's way up to good steel on a very similar path to Boker. Start with aus8/aus10a, then up slightly to d2. Next will probably be 14C28N for both companies.
Did you watch the video? He just said the AUS10 did much better than the D2.
They are both garbage steels, if you don't have one, it is worth it to have in either steel just to experience the lock but neither are in a steel I'd rely on.
@@Old_School69 nothing is offending me, you stated that d2 was a step up from aus10 and that’s literally the opposite of what he said.
@@buckshot1955 both are shit, look at either as a good steel to carry and you can upgrade your collection at a gas station. The only reason to buy either is to experience the lock system. Get that out of your system and ignore every incremental "upgrade" until they get to a good steel. I don't care if either steel is slightly better or worse in any one category. You do know edge retention is just one sliver of many different categories. I don't care if D2 is tougher or less easy to sharpen than another trash steel I won't carry. They are both still trash. I'm not trying to be a knife steel snob, neither steel is going to win a spot in my pocket because I have much better options to carry. I don't think this knife is doing it's self any favors with it's thick geometry either, it may win a pry bar spot in my go bag but not in my pocket.
A waste of money as far as I’m concerned!
I feel like once everyone that bought these is hit with the brutal realization that they bought a $30 knife with a $120 (scale up as needed for whatever ridiculous price the D2 version is) lock then its gonna be an E.T. Atari cartridge in the desert type scenario.
Some will be rebladed, some will get $150 aluminum scales and sit on eBay for years for $499 (or offered to me in trades for ACTUAL $500 knives), but most will sell at the ~$60 price point they should have initially been.
@@CNYKnifeNerd How would you reblade it? Take an AUS10 from another AD20? Any other way? Thanks.
@@gaberoo9099 custom order a blade from someone.
@@CKshouta Sure. You mean some kind of re-blade? Any sources you can share? Thanks!
@@CKshouta You know I bought a RAT2 expressly for that purpose: to have it rebladed with M390, but when I decided to go ahead, the shop that was offering this (only 50$) was not doing it anymore (Way of Knife). That would've been a killer knife in M390, specially since the heat treatment would've been better than what is typically offered in mass produced folders.
