Jojo plays over the barline which is the probably the most difficult approach to choose when playing in 17/8. It might not be perfect at all times but he's developing very nice ideas in real time, that's what improvisation means to me. It means also taking risk and believe me it's damn hard to play that dance beat against the other guy's parts. Jojo does it really nice because he can hear both at the same time: the 4/4 and the 17/8. I can tell that by the way he plays really steady but at the same time he's still hittin those unisono accents with the other guys. That's the hard thing about this tune: You got to be able to hear it
you put what i was thinking in words! it also goes without mention that the other two musicians are just as talented in their own ways because they're managing to keep the 17/8 baseline even though jojo is playing the 4/4 'over the barline' groove. it definitely takes a lot of individual listening and isolation skills
Interesting video with Jason Lindner and Panagiotis Andreou playing "Future Favela". I did a video "interview" to Lindner also about this song and his musicans that is now here.
Jojo sounds lost in this piece. He couldn't find the beat . He began to play some DnB snare hi-hat combo then stopped - it's as if he just gave up and started banging away on his floor Tom . He's one of my favorite drummers! Jojo needs to brush up on his Latin, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian beats.
What does that have to do with the fact he sucks at playing this music? Go listen to Justin Tyson play with this same band. Maybe JoJo wasnt prepared and didnt know music.
Wendell Holmes Jr. Couldn't find any videos of said drummer playing this song, so there's no measuring stick avaliable. As for him sucking...He plays samba better than many other drummers, including Brazillian ones.
still has nothing to do with the way he sound on this tune smh.. and if u go the the bands videos trust me u will find Justin Tyson killing this tune alone with all of their tunes.
ty for upload
Genial, love the Weather Report vibe!
Sehr abgefahren, DANKE
Perfect! As loucuras do Jojo Mayer, um toque de samba, e essa sofisticação toda. Lindo!

@@brennan9629 i have no idea about drumming, it just sounds complex in a nice way to my ears.

Super cool!

TOCA MUITO. QUE POSSA UM DIA LOUVAR ENGRANDECENDO O NOME DE JESUS CRISTO.
Foda!!
Jojo Mayer in out
Love this music even though don´t understand those rhytms!!! :) can anyone explain a bit please?
+Adam Škňouřil This would be essentially samba variations, which there are a lot of patterns, with a hint of jazz at some points.
What kind of cymbal he's using? Looks like Omni but HHX O.O
Methinks omni is HHX.
nonsholten yes
+Desalisme it is
Yessir designed them himself
joJo play the hards beat. 15/23 halfs time shuffel grooves swung in 4/2 feel pattern .he master.i play same.me good
nothing sexier then men who know how to play their intruments
4/4, 9/8; lather, rinse, repeat.
2/4 Dimm Domm
Guy Villela
17/16
Sounds like the jungle

Mmm... You might want to consider that it's Eleni Eliades that can't find the beat.
....Guy needs a bigger bass rig...
even jojo makes mistakes. :) 7:20
There's no mistake...he's playing a time signature over another time signature and they meet...if anything it was impressive
dylan buzz actually he accidentally plays 18 instead of 17. Check out bass man's stink eye immediately after
LOL
Matthew Ingram I'm pretty sure that wasn't an accident.
I am a huge fan of Jo Jo but I'm not feeling him on this tune. He don't sound like he really knows or understand the time signature.
Wendell Holmes Jr. Keep in mind that the standard samba beat is in 2/4 and this song is displaced in 17/16, which offsets the beat by 1 16th note.

Wendell Holmes Jr. I'm sorry, but I don't understand Moonspeak. English perhaps?
Jojo is great, but this was the worst samba jam attempt i've seen.
felipeadhoc it's not samba. it's dance music, sort of like a mimicking of electronic music
