  • FILMED FEBRUARY 13, 2020 - Riding stand up jet skis on the bay and out into the ocean on a clear, blue winter day. The waves were small and the water was clear and smooth. I haven't ridden a stand up in the waves since the 1990's. We'll definitely be riding more waves in the future!

    Man I have the identical two skis! A 92’ and a 93’ with the identical decals on both skis. I have had one for 25 years and the other for about 18 years. Couldn’t be any closer to my setup!

      I had a Kawasaki SX550 in the early 90's when it was super popular to be riding stand ups. So it's been over 25 years since I last rode one and now I'm totally addicted and go just about every weekend.

      How could we not take advantage of it? Out the front door is the Pacific and out the back door the Colorado River. Our play ground is HUGE!!!! It's a beautiful place too. Been juvenated pretty much my entire life bro! Btw, that's Matt's badass retro Chevy and his two retro 550's we rode that day.

    Your videos are easily my favorites!! Been riding standups well, x2's the last 10 years, and just got a 91 reed 550 sx and I am completely addicted. Keep making these videos there are not enough on youtube and yours are everything I love about jet skiing!!!!!! Would love to go ride surf like this....

      As far as my videos being your favorite, thanks, that's a huge compliment! Congrats on the 91 550SX. The reed motor starting with that year was a game changer! If you get a chance, ride in the surf, it's a completely different experience compared to rivers and lakes. It can be dangerous depending how large the waves are. Get on it!!!

      @@billythephoenix I used to ride from the coronado boat ramp up to fiesta island and back down. Probably pretty hard 550. Went south down the strand and met some SEALs who said I was wild going on a ski... well if I'm wild for doing it in a 300 seadoo, you're a madman!

      @@billythephoenix thanks man, and same. Yeah I bought it having never rode an sxr before. Had some time on 750s and then last year rode a 4 stroke Super Jet. The new SJ is a fine craft but the SXR is amazing.

      ​@@billythephoenix And you will! Let me told you my experience in waves: I had an SX 650, but I learned that Kawazakis aren`t so good as Yamaha Superjet in surfing the waves. I had been trying to surf for 6 years in 650 SX, but it is dificult to do good maneuvers. After I bought a Superjet, my surf increased 100% in 2 years.     Flipping awesome!! I just bought a 91 550sx. Took my son out to the river and he absolutely loved it. I am 52 and rode these back in the late 80's and early 90's. I am hooked again and looking for another. People say to buy a 750? I have never ridden one of those. I am 205 and the 550 pulled me around no problem. I once rode in the surf back in the day. At the time I didn't know better and got a ticket for riding too close to shore at Dana Point. Thanks for the videos.

      Thanks man! I had a 1990 550SX that I bought new back in the day. Rode for a couple years and then sold it. Last summer I bought 4 skis. A '94 750SX, '99 750 SXI PRO, '99 Superjet and an '07 SXR 800. The skis in this vid are my buddy's 550's. Out of all these skis, I like the two 750's best! I also got a ticket riding to close to the shore off Point Loma back in the day. Thanks for watching, I'm hooked big time and more videos on the way!!

      Me as well. Bought a new 1990 550SX from San Fransisco Kawasaki. Owned it for 4 yrs I think. Currently looking very hard for another 550sx. Might pull the trigger on a 1990 with all the aftermarket goodies. It's in very good cond. Buying a reed motor 91-95 is what I am really searching for.

    Awesome footage in the ocean! There is a hardcore crew around here that hit the surf in Daytona Beach regular. You can drive on the beach there to launch in the surf. Hell yeah!

      @@classicjetskis Just a heads up, the 1991 and after Kawasaki JS 550 SX was the first year of the dependable, reliable 550 Reed Motor and I think the 1990 650 SX was the first year for that model to have rear exhaust and of course all the 750's and SXR 800's are bad ass!

      @@billythephoenix great insight...that makes alot of sense now as I was looking at a facebook marketplace ad of like a 88 and some one commented around getting 91 or newer due to exhaust, what you have explained makes sense now... this seems like a fair reason to push for 91 or newer.. 90's is still the golden era...I guess 80's just has more lustre as even harder to find good examples, that said there is a balancing act between finding a rare classic and a good practical classic that you can ride with confidence of not having a tone of issues relevant to the era.

    Very cool! Definitely looks like somewhere west coast but definitely didn’t look like oside or Long Beach haha. I am a local AZ rider too, don’t ride the lakes anymore but I’m always out on the river in Blythe south of the I-10. Also have family in San Diego out in Oceanside so fiesta island has been a frequent spot! Great videos brotha hopefully I’ll run into you in the water sometime 🤙🏽

      Thanks! It was quite the work out, totally different than riding at the river on flat water. But that's what makes it so fun and challenging. No gators in our waters just Great Whites like you guys have. We saw many seals, a few dolphins and returning to base a nuclear submarine surrounded by gun boats, helicopters and fighter jets overhead. It was all spectacular! And to top it off, we went and had wood fired pizza for lunch. Yeah, all in all a great day. I'm looking forward to the day WE CAN ALL get back in the water!

      Hey Tristan, that spot on the inside of the bay is a sick surf spot when it's firing. You can only access it by water, no roads or trails there. Has to be a south swell which occur spring to fall for it to break. So we load the surfboards in the boat and occasionally hit it. I love to surf more than anything but now I'm totally hooked on jet skiing. Especially out in the desert at the river, so now I surf less and jet ski more. I have to stay active that's why I'm never bored. It's all good! Thanks for watching man, Billy

      I rode all kinds of waves but the GoPro perspective did not make them look as exciting as jumping them. I really didn't get a lot of good footage either. But this is just the beginning of riding stand ups in the surf. I can hardly wait to get back out there. As far as a work out, yeah it is. Five miles out there, jump waves and five miles back.       @@billythephoenix Sorry I didn't "see" the wave riding...my bad :( 5 miles out!!!???...what if you had a breakdown? I suppose you could get a tow from the other guy, eh? It would have been cool to see how much air you got. Does the other guy ( was is Matt? ) jump? Catch some of his jumps for the next one maybe.

      @@funafter5081 Breakdown? Good question. You'd be in a world of you know what. No rope and no beach to pull the ski up on to. I think we need to some how bring a rope with us but unlike a sit down ski, there's no storage compartment except for the space dedicated for the fire extinguisher. And yes that was Matt and his '77 Chevy we pulled the skis with. He needs to get dialed in with a GoPro so we can both be filming each other. He could be chasing me down filming instead of chasing down nuclear submarines!

      @@billythephoenix I don't know what the winds and currents are like on your coast but 5 miles out seems like a looong way for me. Do you have a flare gun? Haha...I don't think the nuclear sub was too worried but stranger things have happened...did you hear about the Venezuelan navy ship that tried ramming a German cruise ship off the coast of Venezuela and sunk itself in the process...lol. True story...just happened!

I'm pretty sure that about 92 percent of the time we'll be riding at the river. And about the Ven navy, wtf! Lol

    The ocean water doesn’t mess it up?

      Salt water is corrosive on the metal so we wash the entire ski. Rinse the motor, flush the motor and wash the exterior. Then spray down all the metal with WD 40 and remove the hood so the motor compartment dries out completely.

      Well, first of all, these two skis are Matt's, the dude I'm riding with. My skis are 750's and an SXR800. But I did look up what normal compression is and it's 150 psi per cylinder. These skis start right up with no issues and are 100 percent stock. Not bad for skis that are approaching 30 years old.

      @@billythephoenix I've got a small fleet of skis at the moment. My primary skis are a stock X2 and a 750sxi that is ported and has all the bolt ons. I also have a 96 Seadoo GSX that is a ton of fun. The latest addition is a Waveblaster that I got as an impulse buy for my family's Fisher's Landing trip earlier this month.
      I wish I would have held on to some of my 550s and 440s that I had years ago. They were so cheap and abundant about 10 years ago that that they were almost disposable. It is crazy how much a junk 440 is worth now. Your 550sx is beautiful by the way. I only ever had one reed motor 550 over the years but I wish I still had it. Those are awsome skis.

      @@sam_s_ those 550's are my buddy Matt's skis. I have a 94 750SX, 99 750SXI PRO, 99 Superjet and an 2007 SXR800. Your right about the current cost of a stand up, they're off the charts this summer. I'm stoked that I bought all my skis last summer!

      @@doublem6027 I really like them stock with original graphics, so on these particular skis, we'll keep 'em bone stock. Between Matt and I, we have 550's, 750's and I have one SXR800. Right now, the 800 is my go-to ski.
